Bloody excellent and concise guide, thank you so much! I'm super curious about your networking setup with that Wifi 6e router. Is your computer connected directly to it using gigabit, or 2.5gbps? Or are you using a 6e wifi adapter/card in your PC? Just getting my quest 3 setup myself and trying to wrap my head around this last detail haha Cheers!
Great video! Quick question…I have a GeForce RTX 4070 Windforce OC graphics card. What is your recommendation for my “VR Graphic Quality” “Bitrate” and “FPS” settings?
I tried Virtual Desktop, some pcvr games run good and some run slow, I think it's a problem with steam vr most of the time, I get better results with pcvr games with airlink, it seems that's better because I don't have to use steam vr with airlink
How is the latency stability when flinging around your head on WiFi 6e? I dance in VR and with my Quest 2 on a WiFi 6 router, if I fling my head around too quickly, it can cause the connection to lag resulting in a brief freeze frame in the headset. I have line-of-sight with my router too.
in my experience wifi 6e is able to keep up better with quick head movements. The cheapest router which also happens to be one of the best ones is the tp-link axe75.
feels the same for with my pico 4 over wifi! I have my AX50 router mounted higher up on the wall so I always have direct line of sight. When I look directly at it the connection is flawless and I get 1200mb tf speeds, as soon as I start movin around or look the other way, the tf speeds plumet, i get network spikes and it results in stuttering and sometimes freezing, especially when I move fast.
Depends on the strength of your wifi, if your getting decent speed (above 500mbps), then you don't need a separate router. It just helps to make your experience smoother & more reliable 😊
Great video, I am up and running. I have my headset in the basement running off home theater PC. Only getting 16 mbps. :( PC is wired at 1,000. Anyway I could get another wireless router and hook it up downstairs to boost signal? Or would it interfere with the host router connected to ISP upstairs?
I can't seem to run games in "fullscreen mode". SteamVR works just fine, but after running a game from either there or vr desktop directly it opens up in a window ignoring all inputs, still treating my controllers as a mouse.
I play wirelessly but need a wire for the charging. Bought a Anker 737 120w charger that is connected all the time. Always on 100% power (not in mixed reality)
One reason could be the controller tracking. Air Link predicts the future while Virtual Desktop tracks the controllers in real-time. As a result, Air Link’s controller movements can be exaggerated compared to where they actually are.
Virtual desktop is a much more versatile and flexible wireless streaming service that is constantly updated. It's paid for while airline is free but I much prefer the simplicity and ease of use of VD
I really appreciate you constantly updating virtual desktop settings. I’m in the VR discord and I always share your latest videos for anyone using VD for the first time. Could you please also do a router settings video for your shiny new tp link 6e router please and then I can share that too. The latest things people ask for is best settings for your tp link router as it’s the most highly recommended router to use with VD. Thanks in advance and thanks for these videos, they are great guides for newbies in vr discord.

@@MacInVR Yea think you're right on that. Mine is running at 380mbps on H624 plus. buttery smooth. cheers for this vid It helped a lot. but I don't have go like mode listed. Is that just for Quest 3?

Maybe the other app(Oculus windows,DebugTool,Steam VR) settings is wrong?
I like to use H264+ with the bitrate ramped up to 400mbps (personal choice). Experiment, you can't break anything and just hit reset to default if it does go wrong 🤷
H264+ with a high bitrate is great. There's not much overhead for the encode/decode. HEVC is roughly twice as efficient as H264 but requires more processing power for encoding and decoding. HEVC 10-bit has 1024 bits of information per colour channel, reducing colour banding (8-bit is normally the standard and has 256 bits per colour channel). Most people probably won't notice the difference b/w 8-bit and 10-bit codecs. AV-1 is apparently a new codec that is an RTX 40 series exclusive, but I don't know much about it.
Please be advised that Wifi 6e's enormous bandwidth does nothing for your VD. I've had the developer confirm that all 6e has to offer for VD is operating on the 6Ghz frequency range and the benefits you get associated with having less devices on that band, not its bandwidth. Reason is likely that codecs cap at 400mbps with most capping at 200Mpbs, having 2400mpbs cant help with that.
In a world with all those upscaling and frame generation technology, ASW explanation he gave can be very misleading. What ASW those is render the framerate at half of your headset refresh rate (45 for 90hz, 36 for 72hz or 60 for 120hz) there's no frame generated artificially. The thing it does is to duplicate the same frame and rendering the head+controller separately at full framerate if the came is compatible or at half frame rate with head spacewarp to make head movement feel smooth at full framerate. Just understand that neither the head+controller nor your movement are rendered in the game or the app. So when it kicks in and u hold an object for example, you will instantly feel the jankyness of the ASP and can feel very sick for that. I would never recommend ASW on fast paced games or in any games with a head set refresh rate below 90hz. You always see half the frame rate dont be mislead. Only your movements are smoothed to avoid motion sickness but it make it worse in all case with fast pace, moving thing like a roller-coaster for example or beat saber, or any shooter for example. I would highly recommend it on slow games like flight simulator or asseto corsa where even if the actual world is moving pretty fast, your head isn't moving a lot and ur hands either, but dont forget that if there's a lot of moving objet in ur peripheral view, your brain could have a problem to adapt with the framerate even if your dont move much and you could get motion sickness even if you are a VR vet. All technologies need to be understood and use in their most effective way, using everything and enabling all options just because could seriously harm your experience and sometimes drop frames are just preferable. The things is, that option will just be useless the day VR screen technology will be able to use VRR so there wont be any stutter during frames drops and u wont notice them. I suspect it would take at least 5 years more to have panels that small with so bright screens (reme😂, those screen reach 5000 nits+ brightness heavily dimmed by lens to allow your eyes to focus and just see around 200 nits.)and so small pixels being able to use that technology without potential extreme failure rate.
Automatic spacewarp will always stutter frame drops, every moment hes turning ON and OFF so its must be disabled, for normal VR experience. Just tweak your graphic settings again. to achieve stable 90fps without SW turning on. This is the way.
I have WIFI6e and a quest 3. I have ethernet cable connected from router to PC. In VD my connection speed is 866Mbps. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I need to do to get the full connection speed? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
No Bueno for me. - My most used Game/sim... Realflight g8 does not show up in my library. Weird. - All the other games do. - I did manage to launch it thru the virtual desktop, and it ran at roughly half the fps of normal... but colors were greatly enhanced over using a cable. - Launched V-Racer and it played ok. Probably usable. But V-Racer also uses the Left Menu button to exit the game. Was impossible to exit the game thru VDesktop.
Hi, for some reason I get a message when I start virtual desktop to install latest version of software to my quest 2. But I already have the latest, any ideas what it could be?
I have no problems with 1080p monitor on one PC, however can not use with my main PC with 4K monitor. Screen goes black when I run mouse over it. How do I fix this?

If I don't want graphics And I want a better performance, should I u check the Snapdragon resplution? Cause I have a 1050ti gtx And I7 Gen 8 And 16 RAM so I want a good performances as possible, what do you reccomend?
You should definitely tick the snapdragon option because the processing is done completely separate from Virtual Desktop. It's an upgrade for the XR2 Snapdragon chip 😉
does VD work with most PC specs? steam doesn't have the check VR performance and the oculus PC app doesn't update quickly so my 4060 laptop is apparently not meeting the specs and I get a black screen with Q2. Haven't tried VD and don't want to buy it if it won't work with my laptop
What settings do we choose in steam VR and in the Oculus app? I know in steam VR there is a resolution slider. for some reason Oculus games on VD look more blurry than steam games on VD for me.
I have a Surface Book 2 with 8GB memory and even a discrete GPU. Virtual Desktop runs sluggish af on this thing. Memory is 94+% with more than 1 monitor. I only have a browser open with some tabs, Spotify and the VD agent itself. And I have a WiFi7 router so that's not the issue. 8GB RAM isn't going to cut it. Strange tho that nobody, not even VD themselves, talk about this spec not being sufficient enough. I guess I'm the only one left with a laptop with 8GB RAM 😂
I have an EVGA 3080Ti FTW3 and just upgraded from 1200mb to wifi 6e 2400mb, and there is definitely a difference. Compression is reduced and image is sharper and more consistent. I'm using the hevc 10 bit codec and it looks a bit better than when I use link with a cable. Ordering a 4080 next week, can't wait to see what the AV1 looks like. But again, a big improvement when I went to wifi 6e. I'm using the Tenda AXE5700 Smart WiFi 6E Router. It's sits about 10ft. from my quest 3. Very good router for the price.
Rick solid FPS, no noticeable compression BUT I do have that RTX 4080. Just ramp it up and see what happens mate? Give us feedback so we know in future? I love this community ❤️
Ok, ive been searching up and down and no one can answer this. I want to use my Meta Quest 3 home environment, with a virtual screen streaming from my pc. I dont want to use another app's maps ones by the way I cant personally design like I can for the ones for the Meta quest home. Please tell me I've just been silly and am missing the obvious app or feature?
Hi, sorry for asking but Im curious, I have a tp-link deco connected to my pc and oculus but its set to access point, is this a problem? Or should I set it to router mode. I would prefer to not but Im not sure if I find a difference other than some stutters which im not sure if are caused by my pc.
H264 gives lower latency, HEVC slightly better visuals but slightly higher latency and AV1 can only be used with Nvidia 40 series GPU'S. Up to you really 😉
Wondering if anyone can help me. My wifi 5 router is in my living room, but my PC is upstairs in my bedroom, I have always been using Home plugs with ethernet cable to give me a wired connection. For the most part gaming on a Desktop has always been fine, but for VR I think its become an issue with lag. I also don't think the pair of home plugs are giving me my 1gigabit connection, I think they are capped at 100mbps, but I pay for a 1G speed. Even the Virtual Desktop app tells me this information where it says 'ethernet connection', it says no, but it is. Do I need to buy a newer upgraded pair of homeplugs, because there is no way I am running cables around my house. What are my options ?
The problem I'm having is I have a 5G router. Virtual Desktop on my Quest 3 says it's 4g, but on my Quest 2 it's knows it's 5g and is okay with it. What could cause that ? It's ROUTER I only use for VR.
Can anyone help me and tell me why I'm stuck with following problem. I have Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop. When I try to launch Half Life Alyx I can't get it run in full Screen?! I tried to add "-vr" option in Steam game settings but it doesn't help. Example Lone Echo 2 runs perfectly without any problems. Any ideas would be appreciated! Really annoying problem :(
@@MacInVR I know that I shouldn't put any parameters like "-VR", but I tried because nothing else didn't help. Yes I'm running HLA direct from the games tab within VD (because this the only right way)

1.29.0 but it says I'm up to date.........Also either my games try to play in VR.....fail....and then revert to flatscreen, or steam VR takes over and it's an absolute stuttery mess.........I can't get anything to run with just Oculus VR.

maybe you have an old standard or cheap lan cable that isn't up to the task? showed that for me aswell sometimes, replugging the cables fixed it for me often.
I've been fidling around a lot with my router and vd settings, just cant get it to run stutter free somehow. Sometimes it works flawlessly with certain router channels, lower seems better for me. But it mostly works for a brief period and then gets back to lagging and stuttering. the VD overlay tells me most of the time its my network spiking out and causing the lag. I've beenn suspecting my lan cables to maybe be the issue, have you had any experience in difference of Cat5e, CAT6 or seven? i've defaulted back to wired at the moment with my pico 4 since I cant pinpoint the issue. Also altough this is a great tutorial video, I seem to get way better performance with almost completly different settings. I use a T-Plink Archer AX 50 wifi6 router at 80mhz 5ghz band ax only which should easily get the job done. Is it possible that my router is running out of cpu pef. or memory, or maybe overheats due to all the traffic going through it? Kinda running out of ideas by now...
i have similar issues, micro stutter like every 10-15 sec, sometimes i can run flawlessly for longer then micro stutters starts and wont go away. got me thinking its the pc issue but dunno, waiting for the cable to go wired
How come when I'm in virtual desktop and launch an oculus title , under the games>oculus, section it transports me to the steam vr home environment and plays the game through steam vr, when I don't own the steam version of the game I'm playing? this introduces all of steams vr setting I don't want to bother with as the game I'm playing is from the rift store. (ghosts of tabor)
@@MacInVR Hi, Yes I have my open xr runtime set to oculus, I launch Virtual desktop > games then select ghosts of tabor in the oculus games section and it transports me to the steam environment and plays the game through steam vr. upon exiting tabor and look back at the open xr runtime it has changed itself to steam vr. This introduces another problem where I cant access tabors in game settings, as when I press the left control menu button it opens steams vr settings not tabors in game settings. When I use airlink none of these problems arise, I may just stick with airlink as it runs just as good and looks virtually identical .
Just seen on the virtual desktop website game compatibility page that the oculus store bought version of tabor has a known problem "Oculus version has incorrect controller angles" now to figure out why it is launching this version via steam vr....

@@rangerkayla8824 Does it? I played with it today and with the debug tool set to 500 encode bit rate (which I use for cable) it won't play nicely with virtual desktop. But if I set ODT down to 0 and do it again, it will work... Weird huh? That sounds like a wifi problem, all encoding/decoding is done PC & Quest side. Yeah, I found the major limiting factor with Virtual Desktop was having to use SteamVR.
Using virtual desktop sense the first quest. must have app. great video!!

I don't dance in VR, I'm too fat and old BUT I fling myself about playing Pistol Whip and don't have this problem 🤔
in my experience wifi 6e is able to keep up better with quick head movements. The cheapest router which also happens to be one of the best ones is the tp-link axe75.
feels the same for with my pico 4 over wifi! I have my AX50 router mounted higher up on the wall so I always have direct line of sight. When I look directly at it the connection is flawless and I get 1200mb tf speeds, as soon as I start movin around or look the other way, the tf speeds plumet, i get network spikes and it results in stuttering and sometimes freezing, especially when I move fast.
nvidia overlay is bad for it how to uninstall
Have you had compatibility problems with Malwarebytes Premium?
Does the router make a difference? Is it necessary? Why not just use my home wifi router?
Depends on the strength of your wifi, if your getting decent speed (above 500mbps), then you don't need a separate router. It just helps to make your experience smoother & more reliable 😊
Thanks for this tutorial. Just some feedback for you, when you stab your fingers at the camera it makes for a highly unpleasant viewing experience.
A 2nd router connected to your gaming PC is the best option. Make sure you run it in access point mode so it doesn't interfere with your main router 🤔
Awesome video. Your content randomly came into my feed. I was wondering how does virtual desktop compare to just using the new Steam Link?
You have the same head mount for meta Quest 3 as me, how do you solve battery drain? I wonder if I can fix a power bank on the back of that
I had adaptors for the BoboVR M2 but now I have the M3 for Quest 3 which is fine, keeps the headset topped up 😉
I can't seem to run games in "fullscreen mode".
Do you mostly play seated or sims?
I use a 5meter cable for the chargiing so I play both sim and fps@@MacInVR
😍😍😍
Great updated video on how to do PCVR 🙂
Cheers mate 👍
might be a dumb question, why would i prefer virtual desktop over air link?

Thanks in advance and thanks for these videos, they are great guides for newbies in vr discord.

what is the best codec to use
What’s your streaming setup
That is a separate video 😉

Please be advised that Wifi 6e's enormous bandwidth does nothing for your VD. I've had the developer confirm that all 6e has to offer for VD is operating on the 6Ghz frequency range and the benefits you get associated with having less devices on that band, not its bandwidth.
Reason is likely that codecs cap at 400mbps with most capping at 200Mpbs, having 2400mpbs cant help with that.
Apparently the latency is better on 6e? That is one area that would definitely help the VR experience
can you make it a tab because i just wanted a soundboard
That is why this is a guide, to help VR players to make their own tweaks. I do say in the video that my description of ASW is a simple one 😉
Can you charge the quest 3 with the cable that came with the headset while playing? 1-2 hours battery seems so low.
You can use a 30w power bank or a BoboVR M3 (or M2 with adaptors) to charge the Q3
Ok thanks. so wait when using the Link cable you get only 500mb/s and with 5e router you get 2000+ Mbps?@@MacInVR
Automatic spacewarp will always stutter frame drops, every moment hes turning ON and OFF so its must be disabled, for normal VR experience. Just tweak your graphic settings again. to achieve stable 90fps without SW turning on. This is the way.
@MacInVR Curious what your Steam and Oculus Desktop settings are set to?
I don't use Oculus anymore and Steam VR settings are globally set to 100%. It messes with everything if you have too many interfering apps 🤔
Literally brain melting - but worth it!

Good video mate! Thank you for the tips, helped a lot. Would you possibly have a suggestion on how to record your gameplay in VD? Thanks in advance!

Can you play pc vr games without a pc in virtual desktop?
No, you need a VR ready PC
@@MacInVR ok thanks because I was about to buy virtual desktop
No Bueno for me.
- My most used Game/sim... Realflight g8 does not show up in my library. Weird.
- All the other games do.
- I did manage to launch it thru the virtual desktop, and it ran at roughly half the fps of normal... but colors were greatly enhanced over using a cable.
- Launched V-Racer and it played ok. Probably usable. But V-Racer also uses the Left Menu button to exit the game. Was impossible to exit the game thru VDesktop.
I am currently using Airlink, how can i know if wifi 6e is being utilized?
Hi, for some reason I get a message when I start virtual desktop to install latest version of software to my quest 2. But I already have the latest, any ideas what it could be?

Depends on how crowded is your 5GHz band. You can check by using WiFi analyzer app on android
@SimplexPL not too crowded, but I may send all my cell users to my 2.4 band.
I was thinking that. I only have wifi 6 too but Half life Alyx runs like a dream with absolutely everything on max and set to 90hz. RTX 4090/i9-13900k.

Hello Mac, i hlay a lot wirelessly pcvr and i have the quest3. Do you see a big difference between wifi 1200mb and wifi6E 2400mb? i have a 3080TI

Do you have steam vr set as your default XR runtime? Go to Oculus settings and change the runtime to Oculus
