    Virtual Desktop is a total must have for every Quest / Pico user. Every other solution cannot compete with this one. The developer is very supportive and cares about every single issue.
    Tweaking the settings to get VR games running properly on a mid-range PC needs quite a lot more fiddling around with settings and knowledge on how resolution, VRAM, CPU+GPU and in-game graphics settings (especially texture size and DLSS) are working together. Most content creators do have a RTX 4080 GPUs or higher, so almost every game will run pretty good even with high standard settings. But if you have a RTX 2070 SUPER or RTX 3070 Laptop things are very different. You need to consider Codec Type, VRAM usage a lot and in some games like No Man's Sky or Kajak Mirage VR there is no way around using SSW to get a smooth gameplay with a decent visual quality. In the end a lot comes down to personal preference too. Some people may like a buttersmooth 90fps experience more than crisp graphis, others can't stand a single stutter.
    But i think it's important for the VR market and especially for new users, who may have used standalone to date and want to try PCVR, to know that they don't need a high end GPU to run VR. Of course sacrifices need to be made if you run VR on a RTX 2070 with only 8GB of VRAM. It's possible, but unfortunately not in quick and easy steps.

      The real message here is that you need to learn how to use VD, so this video is a baseline for beginners to start with.
      As for all content creators having an RTX 4080 😂 I only just upgraded from a 2080 TI

    • @ProgrammistMusic

      @@MacInVR my fastest GPU is still a RTX 4070 with 12GB, which i would consider to be in the midrange area, but i also have PCs with an RTX 2070S, RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Laptop, which all have 8GB of VRAM (and every system has different CPUs too).
      The baseline to start with VR and VD for people with those type of systems needs to consider VRAM, STEAM VR and in-game settings and how to measure the maximum performance on those type of systems and then go up with certain settings to get the best performance and/or visuals possible.
      There is basically no real beginners guide available how to run PCVR as a total newbie and explanation how all of this works to understand where to optimize depending on your individual preferences.
      But i guess that would just miss the point here, since this needs to be explained in-depth in a longer video with real-life examples. And those are not quick and easy steps.

      Should I use VD if I have a rtx3070 32 gb of fast ram and I9? I have always used steam vr to play my games and have issues with stutters, shakes and black judders. Would VD help any of this?

      Give it a try. Your system is perfectly capable of running on high setting (streamer tab).
      Meta has a very good refund policy, so if you use VD for less than 2 hours and you don't like it, you can get a full refund.
      However, if you're getting the same problems with VD (stutter/shakes), then there is something wrong with your setup so jump over to my discord for further help 😉

    I've just had a bad issue with virtual desktop. Despite having a decent AX6000 Asus router, the bitrate was showing 17mbps in games (air link and steam link were the same). I tried everything and formatting windows and resetting the router didn't help. Now I have discovered the fix and it wasn't what I imagined. Virtual desktop was using my CPU onboard graphics (AMD 7700X). Every game looked terrible and I couldn't increase the bitrate because it only went up to 17mbps. So if you get this issue, go into 'device manager' and look under display adaptors. The cpu onboard graphics will be there. Just disable it (or disable it in the bios) and it will then use your main graphics card instead. I was at my wits end until I found this. I suspect it happened after AMD released an update on its software/drivers. So keep that in mind if this happens to you👍

    The requirement for Ethernet surprisingly was not an issue for me!
    I can run it wirelessly using a TP-Link HX220 AX1800 router from the opposite end of the house.
    Gigabit speeds from the router and i get a quarter of that in my room, 120mbps bitrate for streaming (couldnt do 200mbps because apparently AV1 adds a ton of latency above 120mbps strangely, i need to verify if this is still an issue).
    All I had to do to make this work reliably is use my PC as a hotspot! This surprisingly works and i get 866mbps link on the headset. This may be worth a try for anyone who cannot get ethernet or a powerline to their room.

    Steam VR link is free and works really well.
    I've got both, sadly, I bought into the hype with VD (oops) before I knew any better.
    Yes, it's got loads of features and yes, it works relatively well.
    But for most people, PCVR is Steam and Valve released software kinda cuts right to the chase - you go right into the Steam VR interface with all your games.
    The VD folk are strangely tribal and argumentative over this, whereas normal and reasonable people are like "Whatever works best for me."
    What works best for me is the free Steam VR link.
    It should be said that BOTH solutions can be buggy and I guess it can be said there's no harm having both of them.
    I'm about to fire up VD again for a bout of Alyx - it's been a good long while before I tried it. The last time VD was incredibly laggy and buggy (a year back).

    I'm using Virtual Desktop since my Oculus Go and I never would have bought a Pico4 if it didn't have Virtual Desktop. All of my headsets have it. One thing I noticed: you should have the 2.4 ghz channel and the 5 ghz channel of your router separated, so your headset doesn't have the option to choose automatically the strongest signal. With my Quest3 there is not much of a problem, but I noticed that my Pico4 liked to pick the 2.4 channel. Now seperated on the router I can dedicate the 5 ghz channel to my Pico4 and have 1200 mbps instead of somewhere lower than 400 mbps. Especially playing Beatsaber with the Pico4 has a lot of latency with the 2.4 channel.

    • @MacInVR
      @MacInVR  7 дней назад

      You problem is your 2nd router being connected by WiFi. The developer fully recommends ethernet to 2nd router, ethernet to PC, headset connected to 2nd router via WiFi. Powerline adaptors use your houses electric cables to transmit your internet to anywhere there is a standard plug. Then they use ethernet to get to the 2nd router OR some of the more expensive ones actually have built in WiFi (which worked for me till I laid the cable).

    With the link I can set it to 0.85 without compromising the visible fov and have a huge performance gain, which allows me to maximize the resolution slide. With the VD, ultra or Godlike are already too heavy for my 6800xt.

    Finally got around to buying Virtual Desktop to give it a try. Just upgraded from a 3060ti to a 4070 Super. Using Half Life Alyx as my test bench. It always ran great on the 3060ti. Can't say I'm seeing a huge improvement with the 4070 Super with Virtual Desktop. Tried different codecs, bit rates, frame rates etc. Get around 60-70fps in HL Alyx with setting at mostly high/ultra. I got a bit bored going back and forth between game and Virtual Desktop to change settings. And when the game starts it's centered about 90 degrees to the left of me for some reason! Can I be bothered with Virtual Desktop? I'm not seeing much improvement over Quest or Steam Link in my early tests to be honest.

I also don't add any app or change anything to my pc. Also, the Steam link app and air link apps are working without problem, and I use them right now for my pc vr gaming. This is really ridiculous for the paid app to have this kind of problem.

    Hi there. I'm trying to link up my daughter's old Windows 10 laptop to her Quest 3 for full body (avatar) tracking in her Quest 3 goggles. I guess that will work OK if as you say, Virtual Desktop is only interested in the internet speed in the flat she lives in. I am guessing she needs an ethernet cable to the laptop or adapter, as you say "No ifs, no buts" for it all to run optimally. My daughter lives in Bulgaria and I live in the UK, so difficult to get the knowledge into her 13 year old head. Does all this sound doable, before I go paying out for the Virtual Desktop app on her headset or phone. Are the recommended settings you mention necessary or do you think the general settings on install will be fine. Would be great to hear from you, to confirm what's necessary. Thanks for a reply if you get a mo. Cheers!

    If h264+ can go up to 400bits and you have a dedicated wifi6e router surely this would be a better options than AV1 10bit? you said av1 has all the shiny bits but never actually mentioned what these are?

    • @MacInVR
      @MacInVR  3 месяца назад

      That's a good point, H264 is an older codec, and running it at 400mbps introduces extra latency without any real benefit (for me).

    The reason I don't use VD is because my PC is far away from the router, and even the very idea of having to connect it directly via an Ethernet cable is automatically a pain in the .ss factor.

      During the video, I mention that you can use powerline adaptors. My office is in the garden, 20m away from my router so I used TP-Link powerline adaptors to get internet (and ethernet) to my PC 🖥

      @@MacInVR yes, thank you. I never liked the meta software. Meta forced me to update a few days ago and now I cant play DCS. Maybe Ill try to revert meta back to its old drivers.

      Okay, you're missing the point. A lot of my friends play DCS via Virtual Desktop. It's a wireless service that bypasses Meta link.
      Go to the store on your Meta headset (in headset) search for virtual desktop, it costs about $19.99, download it, follow my tips, play DCS

    SSW no longer causes shimmering in games. The recommendation to disable it is incorrect.
    By making this incorrect recommendation, you are misleading people into losing half the fps they could otherwise achieve.
    Having a second dedicated router is also an incorrect recommendation. Running two separate WiFi networks is a recipe for RFI. Instead, optimizing a single WiFi network is the best way to ensure optimal network performance.

    • @MacInVR
      @MacInVR  5 месяцев назад +3

      The developer Guy Godin recommends using a dedicated router. It is well known within the community that this is the best option to optimise VD.
      SSW is a personal choice, and it absolutely does not work with all games.
      I've recently tried SSW with EA WRC & Contractors Showdown, it made the experience worse.
      Yes, in the right circumstances, SSW is a great tool but that's all it is, a tool.

    • @RolandDobbins
      @RolandDobbins 5 месяцев назад

      @@MacInVR - Guy Goodin & anyone else who recommends a separate dedicated wireless AP/router for PCVR is wrong. They make this recommendation because a) they aren’t network specialists themselves, b) most people are unwilling to expend any effort to learn enough about optimizing WiFi to do this correctly, & c) aren’t willing to spend the money to replace their existing WiFi network, if required.
      Unfortunately, this leads to problems; most of the horror stories one reads about people who tried PCVR but had bad experiences can be traced to poor WiFi network configuration & performance.
      What’s cheapest & easiest often isn’t best.

      We obviously bow to your superior knowledge Roly, but if you listen to Mac's video, he clearly states that the settings he uses works for him.Those settings are may not be to everyone's system,and experimentation, with patience, is needed.
      Unless you can come up with better ideas, I'm sticking with Mac

    • @CaptainPixus
      @CaptainPixus 5 месяцев назад +3

      Mac's recommendation (imo) to not use SSW and adjust your settings accordingly for the best experience is the way to go. If it's incorrect then I am also 'misleading' people as I always suggest turning it off as it causes me to see shimmering in many games and also frame stutters (which I don't get when it is switched off).
      Mac also states in the video
      "These are MY best settings,
      Use these as a base, and work out what's best for you"
      Everyone has differing set ups and will all have different results.
