As a EU citizen, even with "strong" privacy protections, it isn't nearly enough to control the data harvesting from tech giants. But I don't understand why banning TikTok needs so much scrutiny when China simply blocks foreign apps. In this case, ALL other nations should just reciprocate China's government actions against non-Chinese companies. China, in tech and several other industries, keeps European, US companies from competing in a leveled playing field, while Chinese companies benefit from international "fair play" policies. Thank you. I have a 5 year old son, who for now it's kept out of the dangers of all this social media (he is to young to properly understand why it's bad). But i was horrified at what I saw when we visited friends who have a daughter 2 years older with unchecked access to phone. She showed him some funny clips and the next hour they spent scrolling through the tik-tok feeds with the only activity being the thumb moving up on the screen. It was like they became zombies. I know that adults are not better, but those are children, their brains are yet to develop.
The problem with that is that its not something TikTok should be banned over, Firstly im pretty sure it Has age restrictions written into its ToS just like every other social media platform Secondly you could use "the damage done to adolescent brains" against every other social media platform that has TikTok like features making the argument work for TikTok not against it

Is The problem with tik tok, that china is doing that? Because, all other social network apps (and frankly, many others) can do the same. So are you concerned about the privacy, only if it is other states spying on US citizens? And everything else is very fine(Borat accent)?
Yes, obviously that is the problem, how do you think it is not? Your main geopolitical rival is controlling 30-50% of the news and media your citizens consume - that is insanity in the big picture. China - by law - have access and control over Bytedance, if they are not leveraging it now, they will be later. Besides, China has banned all western internet services forever - how is it not fair for west to ban their service in return?
i disagree strongly on the innocence of tiktok's algorithm in terms of promoting propaganda . im a native chinese, a few moths ago i did my own my try ,searched "china" and looked at the first result. it was a street interview in china about how chinese thought about the great firewall and the sentiment of all interviewees was overwhelming support ,making excuses like it was for protection, preventing foreign influence from coming in, which is utterly false, the real purpose behind is clear as a bell, surveillance and information control. not only that ,the comment section was crawling with apologists making vindication like "this vid tells the truth" "debunks the defamation of china by the west". no matter whether or not this is the result of algorithm manipulation, the fact that such propaganda exists prominently on tiktok in and of itself is worth concerning
This. Most of this video was about the data concerns. The real issue is the algorithm and controlling what people see and don’t see. Really disappointed in the Oliver team with such a shallow analysis of this threat.
Just to point out though that Daoyun or whatever it's called is different from TikTok. One is specific for the Chinese audience while the other is for everyone else. So what you are watching is most likely unwatchable for the average Chinese since Great Firewall et al.

@niello5944 safeguard my ass lmfao
I profoundly dislike what Amazon represents but I equally question AliExpress practices and clear illegalities in price dumping and unfair advantages from government subsidies, e.g. shipping goods.

This episode needed to shift away from the "security concerns" of Tiktok, into the overwhelming amount of data showing the damage it's doing to adolescent brains.
I massively agree with this. Social media broadly causes so many problems for the mental health of our young.
The problem with that is that its not something TikTok should be banned over,
Firstly im pretty sure it Has age restrictions written into its ToS just like every other social media platform
Secondly you could use "the damage done to adolescent brains" against every other social media platform that has TikTok like features making the argument work for TikTok not against it
American youth have been eating tide pods before Tik Tok exists, and he best part? This kind of brain rots only happens in America, TikTok is available worldwide wide but somehow is always Americans doing the dumbest shit, it’s the people, not thee app, Tik Tok is the perfect punching bag because it’s from China so American can freely being xenophobic without repercussions hiding behind the disguise of ‘national security’ lol
I mean he does make more than one piece about stuff focusing on different angles so he could be doing that in the future
Is The problem with tik tok, that china is doing that? Because, all other social network apps (and frankly, many others) can do the same. So are you concerned about the privacy, only if it is other states spying on US citizens? And everything else is very fine(Borat accent)?
One you have a chance of control over and legal action, the other you have zero.
@@terri6854 Uh yea... I mean, let's put Googleinto unnecessary legal issue like TikTok do here.

THANK YOU for pointing out how one app's data collection is just... perfectly in line with any and all others of its ilk. Louder for the people in the back, because apparently not enough people have heard it still.
And while at it- heck, hearing "it's just junk food for our brains" on THAT channel.... yeesh.
Why does everyone pretend that China isn't an enemy state allied with Russia? Sorry, but no, they should not get any tech products ever outside of China. All Chinese games and apps should be banned.
