Un-fun further facts about mattress tags: A big part of the reason for the existence of mattress tags is because they just shoved any old shit in there if it could be perceived as kinda soft. This included stuff that would attract bugs (including bedbugs), toxic stuff, garbage, whatever. Then they passed a law saying you had to label it with what was in it. They did, then the mattress salesmen tore the labels off because there was no law against un-labeling it after it was labeled. So they passed a law saying to stop tearing the labels off. Now the mattress must be clearly labeled and the tag may not be removed by anyone other than the end user (in other words, you, after buying the mattress for use). Because multiple layers of corporate entities and salesmen couldn't stop making toxic and dangerous mattresses. Your mattress is safe because of that tag regulation.
You make a good argument, but you forgot the most important point. Profits! If they can use anything without controls they could make another $0.65/mattress and that is billions of dollars! Some of which they can bribe Republicans with!

Allowing companies to essentially regulate themselves is what brought Boeing to where it is right now: with parts of planes popping off and spacecraft returning to Earth sans crew.

We learned a long time ago that regulations and unions were necessary to protect consumers/customers , workers/laborers/employees, the environment/climate, and civilians in general. When companies are left to self regulate, they are free to cut corners, poorly allocate resources, extort workers, drop quality, raise prices, pollute, etc. Regulations keep us safe and prices fair. Period.
The phrase “rules are written in blood” is a reminder that a rule or regulation was created after someone was injured or became ill in a safety event or accident.

Not term limits, but a way to cycle them out. There are 9 justices. Every two years the one that's been on the longest is cycled out. This means each justice has 18 years on the bench rather than a lifetime appointment. And 18 years is more than enough to get things done.
Also, the president shouldn’t appoint them. Where I live, our supreme court (we call it Federal Constitution Court, directly translated) is appointed in half by the parliament (direct voting every four years) and half by the Federal Council (another bad translation) which represents the governments of the individual states. We only have eight judges, so half/half works out. But there are two senates, so 16 judges total. A judge must be elected with a super majority (2/3 of parliament) and is elected for a twelve year term. They must be at least 40 and they must retire when reaching an age of 68 regardless how long they’re term might still be.
The reason you get in trouble if you tear off the mattress tag is that back in the day, retailers would do just that in order to conceal what materials the mattress is made from. In the early days of mattress building science, sometimes the mattresses were made with materials that were later deemed toxic or otherwise harmful materials. But instead of discarding the mattresses for a loss, the merchants would remove the tags so that the consumers wouldn't be aware of what they were buying. To Be Clear: IF you purchase a mattress and take it home, you're free to remove that tag if you wish. That law only exists to punish dishonest merchants, and to protect consumers. The stigma behind it is created by the same machine that stigmatized the McDonald's Coffee Lady.
That a Supreme Court Judge tried to gaslight everyone w/ a cliche' comedy routine is utterly ridiculous. His name should go down in history for his dishonesty. He's there promoting an agenda from the bench and publicly trying to sell it. For years those tags have said they can't be removed *"except by consumer"* for that exact reason. Does the good judge not know the law or that they are made by Congress, not his Executive-in-Cheap whose dictator powers he supports?

I'll be honest, it wasn't something I recognized back when it was being discussed, so had to do some research. Not really something that discussed back in high school yknow. But after I did and saw it was overturned, I feel like we've just erased 100 years of progress. Just this year we had a cinnamon recall because of LEAD (how does that even fucking happen btw). And that's when this was still in place. You're telling me it's gonna get worse?!
Overturning stuff like the Chevron doctrine & Roe Vs Wade, is somehow made even more painful by the fact that those earlier rulings were readily attackable due to a lack of protections _elsewhere_ in our laws. Roe Vs Wade wasn't a great ruling to base reproductive rights (or other right to bodily autonomy) upon; that sort of thing warrants constitutional text, & without such we're in trouble. Likewise, the Chevron doctrine waiving court authority to let agencies decide law, was also a flawed ruling; one which only came to court because our agencies weren't properly vested with legal authority to begin with. Blocking exactly those sorts of rights & authority from _foundational_ level legal recognition, left our courts struggling to reconcile societal needs with bad law.

I live in Utah and despite the national scene, the Utah Supreme Court is actually making some really good rulings for the people. Back in 2018, the people of Utah passed a public ballot initiative that banned political gerrymandering. Utah's gerrymandered Republican supermajority ignored that ban which is why Burgess Owens is around. Anyway, this year, the issue ended up in front of the Utah Supreme Court, and it turns out, the Utah Constitution has a clause that basically says that the people have a definitive right to reform their government. That means the gerrymandered supermajority overstepped their authority by ignoring the public initiative. So in response, the gerrymandered supermajority used some really shady tactics to try changing the Utah Constitution. It turned into a whole thing, but the tactics crossed some Constitutional lines and were actually illegal. The Utah Supreme Court unanimously rejected them. Gerrymandering is now officially banned in Utah and the gerrymandered supermajority can't do anything about it. Because of this, Democrats are likely to pick up a House seat from Utah in 2026.

This deregulation can only really apply to products that are ONLY sold in the US and nowhere else, as they don't have to adhere to other regulations found around the world.
That's why Europeans and especially norm-obsessed Germans protested so heavily against a free trade agreeement with the US. There's a reason why standards, norms and regulations exist. Some of them don't really seem necessary, but many were written in blood. Deleting them to just to unburden companies would cause all kinds of mayhem.

Born and raised in Amarillo lawyer here. Not knowing his politics, I looked into clerking for Judge Kacsmaryk. Everyone I spoke to about it said being a member of the Federalist society is a requirement to clerk for him. Also, the legs were built by a local prankster with old oil money. He also painted a large sloped area white to make it look like the land above it was floating and filled the town with street signs that don’t make sense. He also bribed a high school boy to have sex with him..but he’s dead now and the legs are cool!
I visited Amarillo once on a cross-country teen tour by my synagogue in 1972. We stayed or visited 36 cities and it was generally agreed that Amarillo was the absolute worst place (nothing personal against you or anyone else there). Once, I saw a hearing where an elderly senator confidently yelled at the head of the NSA to "throw a net" around the country's network infrastructure. Every time they say they don't need "so-called experts" I wince.
The median age of a US senator is 65. Most of them were born before color TV was widely available, before plate tectonics was accepted, and well before the moon landing and commercial microprocessors... Heck, around a quarter of them were born before microwave ovens and the polio vaccine. Back when they were growing up being an expert meant something very different from being an expert today, of course they think their 1980s college freshman courses and 'common sense' mean they know better. And that is when they aren't just plain bought and paid for.

If someone did something that caused enough people to hit a "red" button and entered their name, after they accumulated a certain number of "hits", they were punished somehow, or "poofed" out of existence. ("hits" could be removed with selfless acts towards others.) I think most people would be on their best behavior at all times.
I feel like a deranged monster whenever I have these kind of thoughts, but certain events and individuals make me so angry it's a miracle I didn't have a brain stroke yet. Anyone who thinks this court is not ideologically motivated is either uninformed or is so self-interested in particular outcomes that they can't see the forest for the trees.

They can also legislate term limits for justices, pending a Constitutional correction, or if that gets questioned, they may phrase it as an appropriation law: no Justice may receive salary nor facility access after 20 years, and failure to vacate will cancel pension.

I have no sympathy for fishermen in this country. In Japan, the fisherman get together to form cooperatives and set their own very strict limits on how much they fish because they see the need to do that to protect their own fisheries. In the US, the fisherman just want it to be a free-for-all where they all fish as much as they can and fish out the oceans and then they have nothing on which to base a living for the future.
I'm passionate about fishing and 90% of what I catch gets set free. Most other fishermen I know do the same. We are stewards of the waters and want to protect and enhance fisheries. Commercial fishing often gets politicized and corrupt. That's what's destroying our fisheries, not sportsmen.

Un-fun further facts about mattress tags:
A big part of the reason for the existence of mattress tags is because they just shoved any old shit in there if it could be perceived as kinda soft. This included stuff that would attract bugs (including bedbugs), toxic stuff, garbage, whatever. Then they passed a law saying you had to label it with what was in it. They did, then the mattress salesmen tore the labels off because there was no law against un-labeling it after it was labeled. So they passed a law saying to stop tearing the labels off.
Now the mattress must be clearly labeled and the tag may not be removed by anyone other than the end user (in other words, you, after buying the mattress for use).
Because multiple layers of corporate entities and salesmen couldn't stop making toxic and dangerous mattresses.
Your mattress is safe because of that tag regulation.

The Supreme Court is supposed to be non partisan. We need term limits and ethics regulations.
Term limits, zero lifetime appointments, across the board for all government offices.
Not term limits, but a way to cycle them out.
There are 9 justices. Every two years the one that's been on the longest is cycled out. This means each justice has 18 years on the bench rather than a lifetime appointment. And 18 years is more than enough to get things done.

Also, the president shouldn’t appoint them. Where I live, our supreme court (we call it Federal Constitution Court, directly translated) is appointed in half by the parliament (direct voting every four years) and half by the Federal Council (another bad translation) which represents the governments of the individual states.
We only have eight judges, so half/half works out. But there are two senates, so 16 judges total.
A judge must be elected with a super majority (2/3 of parliament) and is elected for a twelve year term. They must be at least 40 and they must retire when reaching an age of 68 regardless how long they’re term might still be.
If trump is able to appoint new judges, I hope they get doxed too.
The reason you get in trouble if you tear off the mattress tag is that back in the day, retailers would do just that in order to conceal what materials the mattress is made from. In the early days of mattress building science, sometimes the mattresses were made with materials that were later deemed toxic or otherwise harmful materials. But instead of discarding the mattresses for a loss, the merchants would remove the tags so that the consumers wouldn't be aware of what they were buying.
To Be Clear: IF you purchase a mattress and take it home, you're free to remove that tag if you wish. That law only exists to punish dishonest merchants, and to protect consumers. The stigma behind it is created by the same machine that stigmatized the McDonald's Coffee Lady.

Overturning stuff like the Chevron doctrine & Roe Vs Wade, is somehow made even more painful by the fact that those earlier rulings were readily attackable due to a lack of protections _elsewhere_ in our laws.
Roe Vs Wade wasn't a great ruling to base reproductive rights (or other right to bodily autonomy) upon; that sort of thing warrants constitutional text, & without such we're in trouble.
Likewise, the Chevron doctrine waiving court authority to let agencies decide law, was also a flawed ruling; one which only came to court because our agencies weren't properly vested with legal authority to begin with.
Blocking exactly those sorts of rights & authority from _foundational_ level legal recognition, left our courts struggling to reconcile societal needs with bad law.

I live in Utah and despite the national scene, the Utah Supreme Court is actually making some really good rulings for the people. Back in 2018, the people of Utah passed a public ballot initiative that banned political gerrymandering. Utah's gerrymandered Republican supermajority ignored that ban which is why Burgess Owens is around. Anyway, this year, the issue ended up in front of the Utah Supreme Court, and it turns out, the Utah Constitution has a clause that basically says that the people have a definitive right to reform their government. That means the gerrymandered supermajority overstepped their authority by ignoring the public initiative. So in response, the gerrymandered supermajority used some really shady tactics to try changing the Utah Constitution. It turned into a whole thing, but the tactics crossed some Constitutional lines and were actually illegal. The Utah Supreme Court unanimously rejected them. Gerrymandering is now officially banned in Utah and the gerrymandered supermajority can't do anything about it. Because of this, Democrats are likely to pick up a House seat from Utah in 2026.

This deregulation can only really apply to products that are ONLY sold in the US and nowhere else, as they don't have to adhere to other regulations found around the world.
That's why Europeans and especially norm-obsessed Germans protested so heavily against a free trade agreeement with the US. There's a reason why standards, norms and regulations exist. Some of them don't really seem necessary, but many were written in blood. Deleting them to just to unburden companies would cause all kinds of mayhem.

Born and raised in Amarillo lawyer here. Not knowing his politics, I looked into clerking for Judge Kacsmaryk. Everyone I spoke to about it said being a member of the Federalist society is a requirement to clerk for him.

Before you discount rules as pointless, put in a minimum effort to understand why it might be there, then decide if it still deserves to be torn down.

I've often imagined a world, where every citizen had a 2-button remote. If someone did something that caused enough people to hit a "red" button and entered their name, after they accumulated a certain number of "hits", they were punished somehow, or "poofed" out of existence. ("hits" could be removed with selfless acts towards others.) I think most people would be on their best behavior at all times.

Then the Congress can pass a law that immunity does not cover criminal acts or mispreasance, from that day forward. They can also legislate term limits for justices, pending a Constitutional correction, or if that gets questioned, they may phrase it as an appropriation law: no Justice may receive salary nor facility access after 20 years, and failure to vacate will cancel pension.

In Japan, the fisherman get together to form cooperatives and set their own very strict limits on how much they fish because they see the need to do that to protect their own fisheries. Is it just me, or does it feel like HBO delaying these segments by 4 days has cut their views by roughly 3 times what they used to get?
If they gained 5% of those as subscribers it would've probably been worth it.
International viewers just watch the full episode the night it airs (it's on this YT channel, just blocked in the US), so they don't need to watch it again. You can use a VPN to watch early, too, if you want.
Yeah, it's such an awkward timing. And it's not like I'll subscribe to HBO because of it, I just care less about Last Week Tonight than I used to.

This is why you need to vote in local elections too. Research judges! There are really messed up, discriminating people who should not be on the bench!
Nice idea, but these are appointed federal judges, not elected state judges, which are hard enough the average voter to research.
