My Grandfather was asked to oversee that airport during the time these events were happening. Sadly, he passed recently so I can't ask for clarification, and I don't recall his title exactly. It has been some time since he told me the story (mid 90's?), so my recollection will be a bit vague, but... He was doing some type of comptroller work for Mena when asked to oversee the airport by a judge. Damned if I recall why it was a judge asking him, but I'm fairly sure it was due to how small Mena was (still is) and most folks were dual hat members of local government and community. Anyways, he asked why, since they had someone in charge of the airport. He was simply told, "Watch and tell me what you think." He then recalled to me that he had answered a few calls over the last few months for voluntary fire dept when they needed to access the fire roads through some of the mountains on his property and it had been due to reports of transponders going dead suddenly over that portion of his property. This event had happened several times and always in the same area. Once he was required to oversee the airport, he would be informed directly about the transponder incident instead of finding out second hand via the fire department and was required to verify comings and goings of craft at the airport during that time frame. He went to the airport only 2 times, attempting to see what was going on and saw a small plane with several men around it, but would be stopped by someone local that he knew (that worked at one of the businesses/shops that were housed there) and told that it was under control, and it was just a malfunction. He said he was required to verify the aircraft but was physically and forcefully denied anywhere near the area. For some reason he waited until the second time this happened and reported back to the judge that he had no desire to continue the job and that something did not feel right about it. Stating that he was not sure what was going on, but he was positive that it was something that would get him hurt or worse. The judge said he understood and thanked him, telling him it was fine and he was not expected to put any more time into it. it was... I think he said a few weeks later? When Barry Seal was arrested. He told me that that was the only time he ever felt unsafe in Mena, and he couldn't explain why, until news of the arrest. I enjoy every movie ive seen with Mr. Cruise in it. Even his portrayal of Jack Reacher was really good even though some out theredidnt like it. 1 thing i want to add, Morgan Freeman has said that doing a film with Tom Cruise is something he's never gotten the opportunity to do and would really love to. Mr. Freeman is in the top 2 list of my favorite actors!! Please, Tom, give him a call.
Right as I reading that comment, I was THINKING to myself, “that can’t be right. Two veteran actors who have been on the scene for DECADES and somehow HAVEN’T appeared in a single movie together?” And then right as I read the reply saying “Oblivion,” I was thinking it at the same time. That was a kinda cool and INTERESTING movie, in my opinion.
Except for JB and crash landing in the neighborhood, it is pretty accurate. I found the receipts for the planes he bought from the government in the archives and a lot more elements. There were a few other guys before Barry, but not with the balls Barry had.
Can’t make this shit up, unbelievable this ever happened, and Tom Cruise absolutely owned the role. Half way into the movie I thought it was an autobiography by the actual guy (obviously not with us any longer, but still.) Awesome movie. 👍 I love him mentioning the altitude of the dirt runway, Tom is a pilot and this line probably came out of his insistence - not something a writer would throw in there unless they were a pilot themselves. It’s definitely not about the space!

Knew he was walking out of there a free man and they thought he was just talking...until he walked out of there.
This ended up being a lot better than I anticipated. Much like any drug movie, there's always the one idiot relative who ends up being a problem that has to be dealt with. The Colombians had the right idea for dealing with him.
He was offered federal witness protection but he would lose access to all his money and a bunch of other rules he didn’t want to follow so he declined. He ended up on probation which made his movements predictable. Colombians got him in the end.
Also in reality his brother in law wasn’t an idiot as portrayed in the movie.
@@RainbowManification then the Judge put him in a 1/2 way house. He new the Columbians were going to get Barry there. they killed him in the parking lot.
great comment sir....this movie is so interesting and got some accuracy in front of that hard reality......barry knew too much!
@@RainbowManification I didn't know too much about the Barry Seal before watching this movie, but I thought he was some sort of informant who got screwed over by the CIA. Turns out he was just as crooked/dirty as any of them, and greed is what got him into the trouble he got into.
When FBI arrived, the look on their faces was like someone just pissed in their beer😂
Friends in high places serve friends in low places...........from time to time.
And sometimes those friends in low places makes an urgent call to their attorney General.
I would say his reacher movies were good movies. But they just weren’t reacher.
They were both in oblivion
you haven't seen oblivion? that stars tom cruise and has morgan freeman in it. 11years ago.
Right as I reading that comment, I was THINKING to myself, “that can’t be right. Two veteran actors who have been on the scene for DECADES and somehow HAVEN’T appeared in a single movie together?”
And then right as I read the reply saying “Oblivion,” I was thinking it at the same time. That was a kinda cool and INTERESTING movie, in my opinion.
These guys don't like it when you act nervous, he shouldve just told them the runway is not long enough and needs extending straight up

This is a great movie. It’s amazingly accurate to the real life story.
no, its not.
Except for JB and crash landing in the neighborhood, it is pretty accurate. I found the receipts for the planes he bought from the government in the archives and a lot more elements. There were a few other guys before Barry, but not with the balls Barry had.
Not even close.
I like how he is so respectful with the lady/state attorney general, and always stands up.

The part where we have dirty politicians.
Well @@cokesquirrel, It's 1 day since you wrote your comment and today, it's uncertain whether you will be able to read a reply.

Can’t make this shit up, unbelievable this ever happened, and Tom Cruise absolutely owned the role. Half way into the movie I thought it was an autobiography by the actual guy (obviously not with us any longer, but still.) Awesome movie. 👍
I love him mentioning the altitude of the dirt runway, Tom is a pilot and this line probably came out of his insistence - not something a writer would throw in there unless they were a pilot themselves. It’s definitely not about the space!

All this was swept under the carpet when Slick Willy ran for POTUS.
Because he was working with the Reagan/Bush Administrations’ anti-Sandanista scheme helping the Contras. It’s why Clinton was “allowed” to become president; he played ball with the Republicans.
You do know that this was a Reagan deal, right?
@@jordangibson695 It was one of those "unintended consequences" deals. But it really had nothing to do with Clinton's actions while he was Arkansas' Governor. Why do you think his state was one of the main hubs for these deliveries?! He was receiving his laundered cuts!
@@jordangibson695 Was likely a George Bush Senior thing mostly and Clinton did all that and worse.
@@jordangibson695you know bill worked for the CIA infiltrating youth groups in colleges? And he is the reason they were flying out of Arkansas.
The error in the end why they killed him was due to 3 reasons. 1, he didn't have an out, an exit plat when it really hit the fan. 2, He trusted his country to protect him, rather than gloating to the world about what they're doing & 3. He should have arranged to be arrested & jailed until the rest of the cartel were rounded up & removed, then released. He looked like a snitch as soon as the images were made public because he was still a free man.
