25 years also, I lived in an apartment and was happy to pay 30.00 to store christmas items and other stuff. 7 years later, I moved and when I cleaned out my storage, all I had was old clothes and empty boxes from electronics equipment. I wasted at least 2 years of money on trash!!
The storage unit companies have actually calculated the tipping point, after which people stop thinking the situation as a temporary storage and just keep paying because the thought of transferring the stuff either back to their premises or to a dump is too overwhelming.
Your mom is such a sweetheart! It’s great that you spend time with her. I am 74 and I wish my children would spend more time with me but, I guess I should just appreciate I’m still alive. I feel sorry for you Alexander after that big house cleaned out now you’re cleaning out a storage unit. You must have the patience of Job.
After our mom died, I gave my brother half of the box of old coins our late dad had in his dresser. His half fit in an old metal Band-Aid box. He paid 40 dollars a year for 12 years to keep the box and nothing else in a safe deposit box at the bank. After my brother died, I took the box to a coin dealer who valued it at $152. I had taken my half of Dad's coins to a coin dealer 12 years ago and made $178. This reinforces my long-held belief that not much is ever worth paying to store.
You and Melissa have to be two of the hardest working people in North America. Also some of the most generous. Thanks for taking us along on these clearouts.
Just before finding the old school bell, there was a red & blue sphere with a yellow handle. It was called "Shapo" and a child was supposed to place the different shapes into the appropriate hole. That I think was sold by Tupperware at parties and was out about 40+ years ago. Stab from the past for me!!😊
The Nintendo 64 is the Funtastic Smoke Grey model. The console and controller alone can sell for $300, and even though the box is missing its styrofoam, it could still add about $100 in value.
This is what I've missed most, sorting through everything and finding treasures. This is a lot of fun to watch for sure! Although I can imagine needing to spend at least six hours to and fro the dump can get to you.
The real treasure here was spending time with your mom. Interesting cleanout, for sure. Like others have mentioned, my kids always had a Tupperware Shape-o ball, Im still tempted to grab one when I see them, they are helpful for seniors who have lost motor skills.
First thought was a landlord with rentals and when the renters vacated, he took what was left and tossed it in storage just in case the owners came back for it.
I’m glad you found the nice ring. People hate to throw stuff away. It may be junk to us, but it had some value to the person who saved it there. These odd time capsules are glimpses into another time where memories are tossed into forgetfulness. We could all use the reminder to store our memories and treasures in a way that those who come after us will be grateful to find. I’m working on clearing out my closets of boxes that aren’t relevant anymore. I’m donating book collections to the library and charities. I’m 65 years old now and I don’t know what my family will actually want besides my jewelry. ❤
I'm 63 and I'm doing the same. I'm labeling the good stuff with descriptions and what it's worth at the moment. Just don't want them to throw everything into a dumpster when they may find value in it.
People leave stuff behind when they clean out and sometimes managers will throw it all into one unit and then put it into an auction-pocket the $. This looks like it might be a trash storage unit. The key is to look for the consistent undisturbed blanket of dust.
The reason why the locker had a cut lock is because it was auctioned off before, the first bidder picked what they wanted and left the rest. This explains the mess. It's cheaper to lose a deposit than it is to haul and take to the dump.
That red and blue Shape-O-Sort ball is a Tupperware item for toddlers from the late '80's early '90's. It is worth $25. Not a big deal. This unit looks like it was from someone who died and their next of kin couldn't deal with it and just loaded up the truck without going through it and put it in storage. But what a waste of money for them. I'm sure storage lockers aren't cheap. Thanks Alex for showing us this. It was interesting anyway!
I did feel sorry for you Alex, for not finding more…and you looked really tired. That must have been a lot of work. But also happy that you found some good jewelry and some other things. I really hope you got at least a bit more than your money back.🙏🏻🥰
That looks like either the person paying for the unit when they got locked out cut the lock off and took as much valuable stuff out of the unit as they could get. Or the owners/managers of the storage place went in and took good stuff. I would say either one of them would have to cut off the others lock to get once unit was foreclosed on. And some people have to move fast & can’t take time to sort stuff
No, those cut off locks are from a prior time when they went to sell the unit, but the owner reclaimed it before the sale went through. Watch enough of these types of videos and you will see it a lot. Multiple cut locks are a sign that there is likely something valuable inside the owners don't want to let go, so they find the money to reclaim it and pay off arrearage before the sale finalizes.
It never ceases to amaze me what people will pay to store; I hope you get back at least some of your investment - but it doesn't look very good from here.
It's like an archeological dig site. Too bad about the Foosball table. Would've been great to have in either the Pool House or the basement rec room. Nice rainy day diversion. Hope you came close to a positive return.
I like these units. Easily 2 weekends of flea markets. Alex, if you have any Old Navy's up your way they get shipments in 24x15x12 boxes. Big enough to get not too heavy and still fit stuff.
I don't know how much you deal with video game materials, but empty boxes and manuals have a big market. Certain cases, manuals, and boxes can go for good money to collectors, especially those who are completionists looking to put together complete in-box systems and games.
I know its hard work, but it also looks like alot of fun. I love your positivity throigh anything, very inspireing. Is there churches that do church rummage sales for vets? Or animal shelters? Donating sellable items to yhem can go to great causes. I love that. I hope your hard work pays off bigger than expected for you and your better half. Have a great evening.
Lol, I have the Soap Opera Challenge set for General Hospital somewhere. It's a deck of trivia cards. I'm always amazed when storage units are basically trash heaps that people pay for. Glad you found enough to make the investment worthwhile.
I would say definitely a dump site for rentals, just tossed in. Managers special, you do throw out lots with value just not big bucks stuff. Old cookbooks $$$$ old VHS watch for those, things that can go on what not or we have curb alerts, take photos of what you have by the road.. you will be surprised what gets picked up. Less dump fees. I saw lots of crafting supplies ect. Just some tips from lower states ,lol.
The game table likely uses standard diameter pipe. Remove the parts and replace the pipe. Conduit might even work. You can also straighten metal tubing by forcing a smaller diameter metal pipe down the center of the tube using a wood mallet. The ring may have paid for the unit, but did it pay you for your labor and other costs? The problem with buying such units are many: 0. You can't see much of what is inside, unlike a live estate auctions where you can see everything. 1. You have to put a deposit down that you only get back if you clean it out. So if there is a hidden chest freezer in the back you are going to need to haul that out and properly dispose of it or loose your deposit. 2. In some cases such units have been used by a business to dispose of waste material that would cost a large amount of money to dispose of. They could; for instance, fill the back of the unit with many boxes of expired chemicals. Paying the rent on the unit for a couple months before abandoning it will be lot cheaper that paying disposal fees at a state approved site. Now you are stuck with paying for the disposal of the chemicals or losing your deposit. 3. You might find other dangerous items such as loose live ammunition simply dumped into boxes that could go off. You could find guns that require a permit for you to own. The largest live shells at a live auction I've seen was a 50 caliber shell from WWII, just tossed in a box with a bunch of other items. At one estate a guy had tossed live 22 shells in one of the multi drawer sorters they store fasteners in. 4. The materials inside have been exposed to high and low temperatures, rodents, insects, humidity and other harmful conditions. 5. Items such as motorcycles will most likely not have a title and it can be expensive to get one. 6. The unit can contain stolen items.
great vid. plus the fact that you feed the food chain that resellers use in the thrift store market for collectables and regular consumer replaceable goods, that's how canucks do it ... jes' sayin' ...
It's always amazing to me that even a hoarder like I am would keep 90% of that or pay to store it. Grandma's Christmas decorations and her plastic grapes are one thing, but most of that...oh heck no. The jewelry I'd cheerfully make room for! (at least until sorting and selling/donating)
And across America storage units have become a "thing" billions of dollars in storage rental fee's. I would never consider renting one unless it was a temporary thing while moving from one place to another. When I worked for a non profit thrift store, the manager rented out a storage unit, then another then a actually store front just to store stuff that was donated.. If it had been me I'd have put it in our store, marked the price cheap and got rid of it instead of renting space to store them because it just kept coming and coming with the donations. Anna In Ohio

Treasure Hunting with Jeebus bought a locker for less than $200 because the door wouldn’t roll up and no one could see inside. It was full of about $10k in high end shoes!
Alex I could tell just looking at it that it was riffled through. Open boxes not stacked pretty much says it all. In a hurry most likely, so they couldn’t get ALL the good stuff out.
That unit has definitely been tossed by someone, who definitely WAS NOT a gamer!! lol Hopefully it won't be where the Storage company threw a combination of default units, after they pulled all the good stuff, from multiple units.......Look for signs that your unit wasn't merchandise from multi owners...It is illegal for storage companies to sell those kinds of units as a default storag unit....Good Luck..
If you had been doing this type of thing when my x-mother law passed, I would have encouraged her family to contract you. Her house was packed to the ceiling in a few of the rooms. When I was able to clean out one of the bathrooms, I found envelopes with cash in them. There was a lot of vintage/antique furniture, china sets, fur coats, just to name a few things. I don’t know how the house was cleaned out before it was torn down. I was long gone by then
Film photography is making a comeback. I'm thinking about getting my old 35mm out and doing some shooting with it, especially with black & white film. I kind of miss those days. What about the Guitar Hero box? Did it have a guitar in it? Perhaps the strap was bought to use with it? The ring was a nice find. So was the other jewelry. Too bad about the foosball table. It was a cheaper model and didn't look to be regulation size but still would have been fun. The Shape O Sort ball was by Tupperware. My kids had them in the early 80's. At least you got a few good things so it wasn't a total loss.
My old landlord owns a chain of these self storage places across the southwestern US, he makes TONS of money simply by storing people’s complete junk. I couldn’t believe how much he makes off it, I’ve gotten a bunch of free stuff from him over the years from units he’s paid me to clear out.
ha ha.. those rubber grapes.. we would pluck one off and then suction it to our nose or chin and make a witchy wart.. they were smaller than those though.. lol
It’s hard to stop seeing trash or treasure once you see a number of either in a short period of time. Sometimes, even the the most off the wall hoarder, can be on to something and be ahead of the curve.
It looks to me like the people were digging through their stuff, knowing it was going to be auctioned off and they got what they could out. They probably walked on the table and bent the poles. They sure left you a mess. I hope that ring pays for the unit....if not more. Good luck. 😁
always check though the boxes some small items like a Vintage Tamagotchi can be worth loads of money and might pay for the whole storage locker... also some old vhs tapes can be worth loads, many collectors out in the world
I hope you get multiple times your money back by people watching your videos. Good stuff! It’s always fun to see what people use these storage units to hold. Be well!
You can sell the unused film, even the expired ones. Lots of students & photographers use them in projects. I'm one of them. lol It looks like someone packed their house up in a hurry and never came back.
Thank you enjoyed!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m always amazed at the trash and junk that people put in a storage unit and then spend money to keep.
This looks like it may have been a "Manager's Special" conglomeration of unsold units. I hope not, though.
@@charlesyoung7436 the boxes seem to be thrown in not stacked

People still love film. The kids are really getting into it. Film photography is art.
Unfortunately old film degrades if not stored properly. The old film cameras however should still be usable if not damaged or caked with old oil.

And...don't forget the "karate frock" 😅😂🤣
That description gets bonus points.

Someone took a picture for the auction...and they had to cut off the lock to get the picture.
Love seeing your Mom, she's looking lovely! You're blessed with wonderful women in your life. Donating is always thoughtful & kind. 😊
I think the storage office. Throws all the junk left over from other units that people leave behind into the one you bought.
That's crappy of them! I would never bid on any storage lockers from them if that was true!
I hope you found all the pieces to the Tupperware ball. That was my favorite toy as a little kid. That would be a great donation.
I played with that same Tupperware ball when I was a kid!
At least after all your hard work, you found a few valuable items. Tina, Al's wife

I think you got lucky in the mom and wife department 😊❤.
It always amazes me what people put in those units . Glad you found at least something to get your money back. Keep Safe❤Keep Well ❤
Amazing -- huge storage locker FULL of junk, and one tiny, little ring could recoup your investment.
I don't know how much you deal with video game materials, but empty boxes and manuals have a big market. Certain cases, manuals, and boxes can go for good money to collectors, especially those who are completionists looking to put together complete in-box systems and games.

Interesting!!! And...Fun!!!!! Cool !!!!!!!!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
Glad you found jewelry...I was thinking you were going to lose on this one.

Be well!
Alex you guys should look for a dump trailer... something like a 3.5ton with some modified sides you could haul everything in one load.
You can sell the unused film, even the expired ones. Lots of students & photographers use them in projects. I'm one of them. lol
It looks like someone packed their house up in a hurry and never came back.
