I did this test with my friends and we all got 1-2cm. We then repeated with the consistenty placement and selective countdowns and got similar results to you. If you do a test, remember that participants cants be blamed for flawed outcomes. Only the test can be blamed for being a flawed test.
This has to be done the proper way, if you move too much right when releasing the ruler, they will react to your abrupt movement, not the actual ruler falling

I remember doing this test a few years ago as part of a biology lesson i had skewed the results because my reaction time was good with both hands which apparently wasn’t supposed to happen anyways they’ve kinda done this experiment wrong because they’re giving a countdown and the hand doesn’t start in a consistent spot between trials
It would be more correctly, labeled, an anticipation test. Human reflexes are limited but when you know, somethings coming, you can anticipate it and it’s similar to having extremely quick reflexes, which is exactly what F1 drivers have. They’ve trained their ability to anticipate the next thing and time their movements. Not quite the same thing as reacting.
