A newly written song comes along and generally liked by the music community. Then each one gives it a go to see if it will be a hit until one interpretion eventually becomes a hit. For Natalie imbruglia, its a combination of the song and herself (face, mannerisms, age, and singing style) that made her version o so likable 😊
Imbruglia's is a cover of Trine Rein's cover of Ednaswap's "Torn." This is the first released version but "Brændt" is technically a Danish cover of an unreleased Ednaswap Demo. Natalie kept the "oh yeah" ad-libs that originated on Trine Rein's cover
*Another cover, cover of a cover, The track, written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley in 1993, (Americans) was originally released that same year by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, who renamed the track Brændt, which is Danish for burned*
This is actually very common. A lot of songs are rejected by labels and then sold for covers around the world. I'm still baffled this song was turned into a ballad when this is clearly a hard rock song.
Not really! Anne Preven and her band Ednaswap who originally wrote it made a lot of money in royalties from cover versions licensed by their record company.
I am guessing this singer wrote the lyrics to this song or at least had a part in it (I would copy her name but my computer isn’t letting me). Man. I feel the meaning of the song hitting me much more directly than in Natalie Imbruglia’s version. I’ve always loved Torn, but seeing the English translation of these lyrics the meaning is much more obvious, direct and heartbreaking. Just a simple plea that almost everyone understands. I also feel her singing is influenced by truly living this song and knowing where it comes from because she wrote it. It’s so moving. That is not to say Torn isn’t a valid iteration and that Imbruglia doesn’t do it justice in her own right. I just feel there is a special soul magic, often, when art comes from an original source.
No she didn't. This song was written by Anne Preven for her Los Angeles based rock band Ednaswap. It was originally rejected by Warner, so they sold the rights to Danish Warner which translated the lyrics to Danish and turned the once dark song into a stupid ballad. Ednaswap actually included the original demo on their debut album even after both this and Natalie's version came out. If you listen to Ednaswap rock version, it's very dark and hard rock, which is more in tune with the lyrics.
W. Lester, couldn't have said better. I have the same feeling. // Coy, I wouldn't call any of its versions "stupid", cause they all seem to have their own merits, seeing how they reached and touched so many people in their own ways. :^)

Left me lying blue and burned
Small, scared, weak
With my dreams forsaken
Now I'm full of doubt if you are still the one

And burns me again
Now the moon lights up my neighborhood
I want to be loved

Wow. I love this sung in Danish too.
Such a shame it's not on the Greatest Hits CD I have from Lis :(
Both versions sound great!
That was a burn with quite some time in the making
Haha, nice play on words.. :)
Guess everyone was Rick Rolled, eh?
Du er stadigvæk skøn, Lis! 😍
That tweet showed me the light.
Send me back in time so I can ask Lis to marry me. What s beauty.
Oh, wait until you find out there is a cult pop band from Uzbekistan who covered this song in Uzbek language in the 90s. And it was huge! There is a significant amount of people who believe it was an original song from their favorite band.
Which band, if this is true? Cause I sure can’t find an Uzbek cover anywhere.
25/08/2017 The @VilinskiKonjic tweet that wrecked us all
Brian J Kinuthia lol, yes
Also the day rich piana died RIP
Thank you Lis for your song!
This isn’t her song. Lis covered it too, before Natalie imbruglia. The original is by Ednaswap.
@@benwyatt7619 Yes, this isn't her song. Yes, this song was later (even after Lis cover it in 1993) made famous by Natalie Imbruglia in 1997. But you are right, the original is by Ednaswap:)
Alex Ost Yea. It’s kinda weird because Lis recorded her version before Ednaswap did, but Ednaswap performed it live before Lis.
@@benwyatt7619 cause Ednaswap not recordered just performed. That was a battle who was really first) Even now. In my opinion the Ednaswap are still the first
@@alexost5107 Yah, Ednaswap is the original!
like whaaaaaaaaat?
for real..? wooooooah!!!
Dänischer Song ist mega cool
Hopefully someone finds this but is anyone here for WSC?
meee
Meeeee for globals😢😢😭
for yale
A newly written song comes along and generally liked by the music community. Then each one gives it a go to see if it will be a hit until one interpretion eventually becomes a hit. For Natalie imbruglia, its a combination of the song and herself (face, mannerisms, age, and singing style) that made her version o so likable 😊
DANG!!!! TWEETER NEVER LIED
Shoot, I've just known. Damn. Her voice is so elegant.
would have preferred this if only i understand the lyrics real time x'D since i do prefer this kind of voice for vocals hahaha
Never wrong to find an original one 👍
the original is by EDNASWAP
@@h2ophilter ednaswap actually cover this song. this is the original.
I didn´t know that "Torn" by Imbruglia was a cover of a Danish singer, we're learning everyday.😃
Philip Thornalley is an English record producer. He worked on both the original Ednaswap and Natalie's version in London.
The italian verb for "cheat" is "imbrogliare", the third person is "imbroglia" which is similar to "Imbruglia"...I hope everything is clearer now!
Not really! Anne Preven and her band Ednaswap who originally wrote it made a lot of money in royalties from cover versions licensed by their record company.
Still in shock 😱😱😱
im sooooo loving this version especially the (drums) intro!
Not the original cover ednaswap preformed it live but just hadn’t released it to the public as a recording
😘😘😘😘😘 love from 🇮🇳🇮🇳
I'm torn after learning the truth about torn.
I love this better than the original version which is equally good.
