I wouldn't be surprised if they (Nintendo) did that to the Switch 2's Nintendo Switch Online too after the Switch 2's release. Even after they release the Switch 2, I am still waiting on the original Super Smash Bros for N64 to be released on the old Switch's Nintendo Switch Online. My prediction is that the old Switch's Nintendo Switch Online may continue to release new retro games until that gets succeeded by the Switch 2's Nintendo Switch Online in 2027. So until then, Super Smash Bros 64 still has a chance for the old Switch's Nintendo Switch Online until the end of Aug. 2027 (in my opinion at least). This is just a prediction.
For people worried about physical games - Nintendo's full breakdown stated that software that consumers "Owned" will be backwards compatible. You do not "own" digital games. You do own physical.
Not entirely true. When you purchase a digital game, it is written into the systems drive. Its code is on the console and will always be able to be played. Now if you delete it and have to redownload it, the question comes up on whether or not the game will still be on the server. Nintendo is really good about this as you can redownload old purchased titles even on the Wii Shop Channel today. Same with Nintendo 3DS.

I own Xenoblade 1 DE in both digital and physical, if I put the cartridge in the console, the game will uninstall, and if I want to be able to play without the cartridge again, I can just redownload it, because I "own" it. Having the most powerful console ever does'nt guarantee success something that was already made clear to them during the gamecube era and something that's hitting Sony and Microsoft hard right now. The pokemon company are guilty with paid DLC add ons. DLC is so expensive for sword/shield and scarlet/violet. Have no purchased as of yet and probably won't. Main stories were sufficient for me at least
I am happy about backwards compatible but I am hoping they keep bringing JRPGS out for the Switch 2. Let the Switch 2 continue to be the home of RPGS as the Switch is called now.
