Calvin Goddard pioneered modern forensics in his Chicago based scientific crime investigation lab while ballistic forensics was started in the 1800s with bullet matching by a different Goddard. While forensics in general has been studied/practiced/passed down for hundreds of years before that back in the 1700s they recovered a torn off piece of newspaper that was used as wadding for a black powder pistol from the fatal gunshot victims head, and at some point found a piece with a matching tear in the pocket of their suspect and used that as evidence to get a conviction. similar medical forensics techniques, procedures and guidelines etc to today were written down by likely the first medical forensics scientist in history. On a timeline with the year 1964 in the middle the start of using fingerprints is something like 3 times as many years in the past as them using full DNA analysis was years away in the future.
Also another good detail is as soon as Carl begins to try to open the wallet, Frank gets his attention away from it by enticing Carl with the face of who had he had been chasing down all this time.
When I first watched this and heard him say his name was Barry Allen I was like “the flash?” Until later at the cafe the kid says something about the Flash
3:22 imagine the embarrassment if the kid turned out a real secret service agent, he'd came back and like "Hey, why are you messing with my cards collection like that?"
When he tells you with so much confidence, you don't question how he flips his wallet to show his badge with a button locking it, or how an old man jumped out the 2nd story window and landed on a car 30 feet away
My favorite part is when Frank asked Carl to show him HIS ID, really ensure that Carl feels like Frank is a legit authority in the situation and pulls attention off him.
Everyone thinks it's that....but Frank said in several interviews at the time he just wanted to see the format of an F.B.I. identity in case he ever needed to make one.
Probably the most underrated movie in the history of cinema. What a masterpiece. Such a crisp writing, stellar performances, perfect directing. It's a pleasure to Watch It everytime
The confidence, and the button on the wallet. Carl’s mind was completely tricked into believing he held legitimate Secret Service credentials without actually seeing them. And Frank got away with several dozen checks, and the Micker-type machine. Brilliant scene!!!
This was a fabulous scene. I've always considered 'Catch me if you can" to be Spielberg's best film. No misguided experiments, no lofty goal, no pretentiousness, just great acting and storytelling.
In that case, considering the elements you mentioned, this elevates even more "Schindler's List" to be his best film. I would even throw in "The Empire of the Sun" before this movie.
I thought that was too over-the-top. When you're in that situation you stay "on" until you're completely out of it. You don't let out a sigh or whatever as soon as the person has their back to you.
Why you guys lack any confidence? Are you guys weak, so you lack confidence? Nobember people are quite confident, if their happy and got good self-esteem, but then as sad person they can also be bready confident, while their sad.
It isn't about confidence, it is more like ... a kind of performance. Confidence implies that it has to be true for it to work. It isn't true, not really. Instead, it is a kind of acting, a chutzpa, a flair or style, that is there for just that five minutes and then he walked out the room. Bravado! You can do that.
1:37 that second he looked nervous because the other guy was not part of the plan and now if he replies or if Hanks asks the other guy any question, it's game over. So instantly he moves out from scene and drinks water to calm himself down and at same time, distracted Hanks from looking too much at the car and his partner by moving away from him .You could see the sudden paleness when he's looking away from Hanks
@@krithiiyer5178 It's actually simple acting if you know how to let it flow. He puts his mind into the character and scene. Also the scene gets repeated many times to get it right
@ds8390 He said the writers nailed it when what allegedly happened to him for real had many funny stories that he did. There was no need to lie here to tell stories that would impress people. The scene would be better in a 100% fiction movie. Had the whole thing been 100% made up you would have a point. Many people believe movies inspired by the truth are 100% accurate and some of the things they fake in them like this scene and this scene when they had "real" examples from his life in his book or from his memory to use. Listen/read the book based on his life. He talks about these scene in it.
@ds8390 You not the brightest crayon in the box. They did not need to inspire the movie off real life at all based on your silly logic. This was not one of the scenes they needed to make up to get their point across. Why don't you actually read/listen to his book before you cry so much?

@@noname-wu9xr actually its spelt double in tundra. it comes from a classic tale of the two men lost in the depths of winter who both heard different voices calling them from the deep snow but that led them in the same direction.
The way he sells this act is impeccable. The pressure he continuously exerted on the FBI agent never let the man have a rational thought to himself for even a moment.
Leo's acting style is incredibly clever. He uses his eyes to portray feelings of his character rather than just his body language and voice. Like how Clint Eastwood was so soft spoken that you needed to really focus when he spoke. We really focus on Leo's eyes to try to guess how he is feeling. And as humans 80% of our interactions with eachother is done with our eyes. That's what Leo uses to psychologically trap us into the movie. It's a very clever way to act.
While true, you can literally say this about any good actor. Everyone is automatically really watching someone's eyes while watching a movie, so it would make sense that anyone seen as a good actor would really use their eyes to communicate emotions. Talented acting style, but not clever, as it's done by thousands of actors before and after.
Two things, 1 - to give Carl the look that he is a professional and 2- so that he could see how the FBI I'd card looks so that he can forge himself one in the future
The best part is that right before he asks that and he has his back turned getting a glass of water, you can see he's terrified, he's shitting his pants. Then he turns around and he's calm, boom, perfect delivery of that line. Incredible acting.
Also unrealistic. When he came out of the bathroom and directly pointed his finger at hank, he would have gotten shot if it was an real agent. Also, no one talks like this with a gun to their heads

at 3:20 , Imagine he really was a secret service guy with just a messy wallet, and his ID and stuff was actually in the wallet, and he just came back to officer Hanratty just throwing all the shit in his wallet on the floor lol
I think the purpose of that is giving Hanratty something else to focus on. Instead of thinking “Wait, who is that guy?” Or “He looks way to young to be a Fed”, he’s instead relaxed that someone else has handled the case and he can just check the wallet, giving Frank some extra seconds to escape
@Randy White Frank actually draws back on this later in the film. Hanratty asks “You never got back your wallet. How did you get me to focus on it?” Frank: “Same reason the Yankees win every game, everyone’s too busy looking at the pinstripes” Hanratty: “The Yankee’s win every game because they have Micky Mantle”
Over the course of the film, he proves to be good at creating characters and stories and believing his own lies. He goes a long way with the bullshit he tells, like being able to organize a school trip.
Frank Abignale would have come up with something else to get away. He was a master, which came from that confidence that Leo portrayed so brilliantly. You forget he was just a kid until he turns away to face the camera to drink. He looks like a scared kid for an instant, and then his mind comes up with another way out, and then instantly the confidence is back. Just watched this for the 2nd time, and I forgot how good diCaprio was in this film. Going up against Tom Hanks, with an all around excellent supporting cast, I always thought this was one of his best.
I think Frank did that to reiterate that he wanted Carl to stay in the room while he made his escape. If he took the wallet back there was a chance he would follow Frank out despite the chance that a maid could've come through.
The stones and creativity abignale had at such a young age is amazing. Confidence is one thing but the constant threat of being caught and the stress must have been incredible.
