The best choices for drinking or partying in Southeast Asia are 1. Thailand 2. Bali. As for Burma, Laos, Cambodia, these places should not be on your plan.
Me and my buddy took some what we thought was alcohol turns out I’m pretty sure it was all the discarded alcohol from the still so mostly methanol No wonder we were sick/hungover for 2 days ….
The reason you “don’t believe in those distinctions” is because the idea of “keep it local” doesn’t let anyone see outside their own bubble. not only do Millions of people visit Thailand every year and there are very rarely problems, but this did not even happen in Thailand it was in Laos. And cheaper travel is certainly better if you actually experienced it for yourself.. You cannot hold onto doubt when you’ve never actually stepped outside your own.
How is Thailand at fault in this news? Tourists drank alcohol in Laos (Laos is a country bordering Thailand) and were sent to Thailand for treatment at a hospital.
I remember knowing someone who had methanol poisoning and the thing I remember the most vividly was the amount of absolute ground beef n gravy consistency diarrhoea that just did not stop pouring out of them constantly and the absolute horror and smell of it. I'll never forget that smell in my memory as long as I live. Just copious amounts of molten sloppy Joes and the excruciating miserable pain it caused. It's terrible.
Every single Bar in Bali,Laos, Vietnam and some parts of Thailand uses "Home Made" Spirits which have methanol. Every single young backpacker goes to these places to buy "Buckets" of the stuff and drinks litres of it every night. The only safe way to drink is from unopened bottles.
