This is part of the cardiac world that I am part of for the last 30 years. Having the blessing to have pioneers like Dr Thomas and Dr Blalock have changed the world in medicine. The fact that no one at the time touched the heart during those days and having these two pioneers have the courage to move forward is phenomenal. With the skill and bravery of these two brilliant men, we have been able to advance so far in cardiac surgery and procedures. ❤
For anyone watching this film. Be inspired by your craft. Let that passion drive the course of your life. And hold on tight and Never give up. Because a life that’s passionate. Is a life well spent. And I quote "It's not about you. It's about the work. I like the work." Now that's a calling from God right there. Indeed something the Lord himself made. I love this movie.
It's obvious to have compassion for Dr. Thomas. I believe Dr. Blalock was a good man, and Dr. Thomas would not have completed his mission on Earth without Dr. Blalock. They were soul mates and they loved each other. This was their journey. It's not about recognition. It was about saving lives. God saw fit to exalt Dr. Thomas when the time was perfect and profound. Bless them both. They couldn't have done anything without each other.
Spot on! Dr Blalock was an equally extraordinary man to have given Dr Thomas this chance in the first place. Such inspiration for us in the medical field as well!
@isashar7949, it's that line of thinking that will continue to keep blacks down. Seeking approval from society knowing it will never come instead of praising God for what they have. Everything in God's time. Not our own.
Love this movie because even though society doesn't recognize you God always does. And Dr Vivian finally got to see what God had put inside him and no one can take it away from you.
I Am sooooooooo impress with Dr Vivian Thomas. 1. He didn't change his name. 2. He was still humble and didn't allow pride to overwrite his decisions. These led to him being honoured at the end. BRAVO👏! Luv💞!
Oh God, I cried so much towards the end of the movie. Racism and prejudice have deprived many men and women of colour from getting the recognition they so deserve.
Jane, I am saddened because of prejudice that exists in this world. It should not be. I am not black or even brown but am a human being who loves my human family, all of them.
I didn’t cry. It just made me incredibly angry because I’m part black as a Puerto Rican that understands racism so well I felt this was betrayal towards Mr. Thomas.
It just melts my heart and it's so inspirational and Dr. Thomas was so humble, forgiving and talented 💞 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life 🙌🏾 John 3:16

Thank you for the opportunity to see this wonderful movie. Dr. Vivien Thomas was a brilliant man and intellect. His grace and humility were beautiful. An amazing man, I'm sure his family was very proud of him, and justly so. As so often happens, the people so deserving of recognition for their huge contributions and innovations, never receive it or recieve it belatedly. RIP Dr Thomas.
Heartbreaking watching this brilliant, gifted young medical genius treated so poorly. He had so much to offer, but was stymied by lack of financial means, limited opportunity, bigotry, racism, snobbery and ignorance. It boggles the mind to think how much greater medical progress could have been accelerated if Vivienne had been afforded the educational opportunities he truly merited.
Wow, what a wonderful man. Someday I'll shake his hand and thank him for the life of my grandson, Caleb. He was a blue baby. He's 19 now and on his way to becoming a good man. I praise God for Dr Vivian Thomas.
This movie is an epic documentation of a brilliant man's undauntable spirit in spite of rampant racism and economic collapse. This is a real masterpiece, a true-life account that will leave a lasting impression. Thank you so much for making it available.
When everyone looks past color and open their eyes only then will one truly see what the Lord has made. Dr Vivien is an inspiration to me. Inspite of the obstacles and setbacks he continued to move forward doing the Lords work with such poise grace and class. He did what he had to do so that he could do what he really wanted to do. He wanted to save lives and that's what he did. It brought tears to my eyes that they didnt acknowledge him or give him his flowers when he really would've appreciated it the most. Dr Vivien Thomas thank you. ❤
Well That Doctor gave him the opportunity know matter the obstacles and the setback God always put things as well as people in place for mankind to use it to do what ever to God be the Glory 🙏🏽♥️
When l was just a young woman working in the Radiology Department in Birmingham,Alabama in the 70’s l remember all the talk about how Drs were starting to operate on hearts and there was a Dr Blaylock from up East was working on perfecting it. When l happened on this movie l had no idea that this is what it was all about. Also that there was a Mr Thomas working along side Dr Blaylock. And l also see why now. l am also very glad and proud they finally recognized Mr Thomas for his hard work. I believe he was the smart on who really perfected heart surgery. I am also very glad he was given his due recognition before he died.
It's heart breaking to know that Mr. Vivian Thomas didn't get the opportunity to full fill his dream of becoming an actual doctor. The expertise and scientific gifts he had are unbelievable. One can only imagine if he was given the opportunity to go to college. However, he followed his heart & was given the recognition he deserved in the end. I am happy this American history along with so many others are documented.
Yes because he didn’t have money to go neither could he joined the doctor photo even though he was the main one deserving to stand alongside dr.blalock . But I’m so glad he got his recognition from the hospital and else where and that all those doctors bare witness of him being present in that operation . Plus those in the lab.
What a amazing biography of a amazing man Dr Vivien Thomas who GOD had so graciously gifted, it is so heartbreaking that he never made it to medical school. As I'm sure he would have been a brilliant surgeon.
That tragedy pales in comparison to the synergistic work he & Dr Blaylock accomplished as they collaborated to save the lives of babies. Blaylock, while a brilliant man himself, couldn’t have done it alone. As Joseph said in Scripture “what you meant for evil, God meant for good.” God’s Hand was on Vivien Thomas in a mighty way. V. Thomas actually was a brilliant surgeon; he taught others there at John’s Hopkins & in doing so, accomplished far more than a single Dr/surgeon could have.
Finally getting the credit he deserves!! It's all he ever wanted. To be acknowledged!!❤ Thank God Dr. Blalock took him under his wing and allowed him the ability to soar!🎉
Reminds me of my dad. Had just about a sixth grade education; started out as janitor at a facility that makes (let’s say body parts) He’s a very skilled man - he built his own home. Precision was his pet peeve. He over heard coworkers one day trying to decide the right measurement to complete a task. He offered his two two cents. They were amazed. He was promoted to the tool room and later an A-grade mold maker; a position filled with trained craftsman. I said to him: somebody is out there who has taken credit for that and made lots of $$$ off of what you showed them. They asked him if he were some kind of doctor. “It’s never too late for a shower of rain.” It was grand to see him get the recognition.
Thank you for this testimony. As Native American, it encourages my faith to walk with our Lord Jesus Christ. Through perilous times, afflictions of powers, losing everything, persecution, and circumstances. God will show me why he brought me almost two thousand miles away from my homeland. You have given encouragement this day. Thank you.
I'm learning English. Sometimes I don't understand anything, but it's okay. I watch it again, and again, and again, and my vocabulary increases and so does my level of understanding. Thank you for the caption, because it helps us better understand what the characters are saying.
A beautiful story. I love the very real struggle that many of us go through -- the need to be recognized without being honored. Vivien Thomas is the kind of hero that the world needs. Well done movie makers. Well done LORD of hosts!
I watched this movie years ago and Mos Def was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT in this movie. The depth and range of acting, and emotions were mesmerizing. He and Alan Rickman were the perfect match to tell this historic and ground-breaking medical story.
Extraordinary movie...so compelling and touching. As a doctoral student who went through many years not being recognized for significant work, I can relate yet only imagine the pain of his journey. But the joy exceeds it! Had to slap my mom to wake after she fell asleep watching this. A must-watch! Excellent movie!
BEAutiful movie about a beautiful person with a god-given gift. A reminder of how ignorant a society can be. Thank God for the rebels and the individuals who listen to their own hearts..
What an amazing story. As a mother of a daughter who had open heart surgery God bless these Dr's. God bless their bravery and persistence. Without them and their work my daughter may not be here. God is so very good.
This was a remarkable journey for such a gifted man. So many lives have been and continue to be changed by the unending love and compassion our medical professionals accomplish in their field everyday.
This movie is inspiring. I love the way he Vivien thought himself and very comfortable on his work. And I love how the other doctor is open-minded and willing to learn from Vivien
The professor and surgeon, Dr. Blaylock, should have spoken with the European university medical departments. I know there would have been at least one school that would have gladly and respectfully accepted and taught (Dr.) Vivien Thomas. When people who behave and speak as if they deeply care and are respectful and grateful but refuse to become an activist for those who need it, it’s *so difficult and frustrating* to live with! Holding others back is *wrong.*
Even after acknowledging him they made his image within the picture smaller than the other pictures of medical professionals and intentionally hung it on a wall blocked constantly by an opening door. A protest was made to have it relocated to an honorable position. They initially tried to hang it within a lab or research area but those who had trained under Vivian Thomas pressed hard against the action.
My cousin (the eldest of the large gang of us) was the first to survive this surgery beyond a year, then two and so on. He lived to be in his early thirties, married and had two children. He had numerous follow up surgeries and lived his life without ribs on the left side. (While it isn't shown in the film, the surgical procedure included the removal of the majority of the left rib cage.) His surgery took place about 8 years before I was born, but I remember looking through all of the articles from our local newspaper which showed me what a major event this was. I watched the film with deeply invested emotion, purchased the DVD and made certain my grown children viewed it, as well. My mother had open heart surgery in her eighties and all I could think of while sitting in the waiting room, was how my cousin had been a part of paving the way.
A truly great touching movie depicting the struggles of a very intelligent African American man who ambitions to be a doctor but never got there though he received the opportunity to be able to do the work of an actual doctor and much more. This shows that life can be arduous yet still actually good and great in the end. He finally became an Honorary doctor and worked at the prestigious hospital. ❤

Thank you for this movie, humility is better than pride, God bestowed more graces, and heavenly gift, to those Heart filled with Humbleness. It’s a great movie, Bravo!!
Mos def and Alan Rickman were incredible in this film. Had the feel of a lifetime movie at points but these two elevate it so much beyond the low budget!
He most certainly did! That was an amazing performance - perfect! So believable - Everyone the whole collective group did excellent work! I'm definitely spreading the Word about this incredible MOVIE that I have never heard of! They should be showing this in schools too like other great learning historical and stories based on actual people who did great things!
What a wonderful story! So glad that I had an opportunity to learn about the work that Vivian Thomas did. It’s unfortunate that Dr. Blalock took advantage of his natural born intelligence, by keeping him in the lab, and not encouraging him to go onto medical school, as he had intended to do. I think the world should acknowledge Viviane’s participation in assisting Dr. Blalock with the blue baby surgery.
That would've been an even better ending. I think it a sin the white doctor didn't put Vivien Thomas through medicine school to begin with when he saw his exceptional intelligence too! ❤Chrissy Comey, Exupery
@@millicentmatshusa1606not if he was going for school part time, the truth is he was taken advantage of, but so many people of color were taken advantage of and still are, which makes it even sad, he knew without school he wasn’t going to be acknowledged
I found myself tearful. Thank you, Dr Vivien Thomas, the man with a golden heart (unmatched humility). You gracefully answered your call, you were indeed "something the Lord made" and your story will inspire many lives in many years to come.
We love this movie, absolutely. It's also about the bond of true friendship withstanding the trials and tribulations of life. Also triumphing over ones self. So glad his wife remained true to their marriage.
Amazing story. It did sucked that he didn't get any recognition for the Blue baby operation research or got the chance to go to school but in those times what do u expect. I'm so glad the Dr. gave him a chance & trusted him being that he had no medical training. So happy he ended up doing what he loved to do in the end. We have so many smart, exceptional black people in the world.
In awe! His gift was AMAZING. He truly had gifted hands and a mind. His relationship with his doctor friend gave him insight of how to deal with a world that cannot get past color.
It was a partnership - and they acknowledged the need for each other - the unlikely duo til they realized they were better together and really needed and accomplished the great work to help all men, children who needed that surgery and to LIVE. Come on - great partnership! They had great respect and love for each other's greatness and heart & dedication to keep trying til they finally figured it out! Amazing!
I am now towards the end of this movie. I can’t believe how well done this movie has been. The storyline is remarkable. I am now tearing up at the two of them reminiscing about their time together especially when the doctor is trying to tell Vivian how sorry he is. This is a movie that I saved to watch later I believe I remember that it is a true story. So now I will look that up to see if I remembered that correctly. I will keep this on my save list and try to watch this again pretty soon. My son graduated medical school this year 2023 and he is doing his residency in emergency medicine. I also worked in the medical field for over 30+ years. I love medical stories very much. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Awesome story and thank you for making this movie available to see & share with our family and friends. Dr. Thomas was a man created by God who truly had a big heart & had the desire to save lives. Thank you Dr. Vivian Thomas ❤
He was highly motivated and good with his hands but God had a plan and working for the Dr. B saw how special Vivian was. I loved how he got a medical education, one on one…He was sharp and determined🙏
Thank you for posting 🙏🏻🙏🏻. Great movie . Vivian has such a calm disposition, steady hands, and great confidence. His curiosity and his ability to “feel” his way through and maneuver around the heart is for sure a God given gift. Wonderful true story portrayed exceptional well by these actors . Please post more films like this as I quite enjoyed watching.
@@shirleyannglass3613you mean how Vivian helped him. Vivian never went to medical school and dr blaylock could have helped him but he kept him as a subordinate for his own personal gain. Anyway like the Bible says what he meant for evil God turned it for Vivian’s good. Now we remember his greatness and millions of lives are still being saved by heart surgery
Second time seeing this movie. So inspiring and wonderfully done. Dr Vivian made his mark in the field in which he lacked credentials . However he was innately gifted and that can’t be taught in books. What a inspiration for all us to follow our passions and work with our gifts.
@1:04:01- Vivien was in the ministry of the prophetic- he had a prophetic gift too. I think that’s why he did what he did with so much excellence. God worked through this man’s hands, for real🙌🏾 I was teary-eyed when he achieved the breakthrough
That’s the importance of the prophetic, even Dr Ben Carson also received a prophetic encounter when he was about to go for his chemistry exam, an exam he always struggled with and he saw the exact paper he would sit for, I think the Bible also says something about the prophetic being a gift for everyone, we need only to be still and listen to God speak
@@Rhodah_Musonda precisely. We’re all called to be prophetic in some way- as this is our purpose teleologically as predicted to us in Acts 2:17, though I think certain people will use this gifting in a larger capacity than others. God used the prophetic to help me through my education too, which is why it resonates strongly with me. It’s very real.
What a fine example of Dr. Vivien Thomas: such humbleness, integrity, humanity whom handled unfairness with his resilience. He finally received his world, honorary award and recognition, that was long past due.
This is the movie of the millennium!!!! Waooh it's so so beautiful and inspiring. Humility at it's best. Thanks to Dr Vivian's Wife, she kept her husband humble to wait patiently on life and because who he was meant to be ( that's a good lesson to wives). God bless the Crew for such an inspiring movie.
Something God made indeed! Dr. Vivien Thomas, Well Done Sir! To his loved ones and descendents, you have greatness in your veins, I hope you continue the great work. Mos Def and the entire cast, this was a work of excellence! To the producers of this channel, Thank You, after a tiring day, feeling overworked but undervalued, this movie was just what the Doctor ordered🌹
I just finished watching this movie with my husband, & it is truly INSPIRING to watch!!! It was incredible to see how a black janitor who never attended medical school helped a surgeon to develop a device to perform heart surgery! And that same invention from the early 1900s started cardiac surgery as we know it today. This movie is worth every min to watch; I cried at the end!!!❤ From the U.S.
Soooo beautiful & humbling. I'm going to look for the book & other writings on Dr. Thomas. Bless him & those that finally gave him his due credit for this ground breaking studies & surgery. Peace be with everyone 🙏
I've seen this movie a couple times before and it always makes me proud to think how much we as African Americana have impacted this world and sometimes not get our just due. Thank you Dr.Vivien Thomas RIP

Wow such a blessing
It's obvious to have compassion for Dr. Thomas. I believe Dr. Blalock was a good man, and Dr. Thomas would not have completed his mission on Earth without Dr. Blalock. They were soul mates and they loved each other. This was their journey. It's not about recognition. It was about saving lives. God saw fit to exalt Dr. Thomas when the time was perfect and profound. Bless them both. They couldn't have done anything without each other.
Hello Pretty, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
Too many blacks were robbed of their contributions that’s a soul crushing experience that matters.
You are very wise to have discerned this wonderful and complex relationship between truly gifted men.

Thomas.

Btw I’m 49 years old ❤
I’m very proud ❤
So true, there are many people today in the same circumstances as Dr. Thomas. They never get the chance to show their true abilities.
Yes because he didn’t have money to go neither could he joined the doctor photo even though he was the main one deserving to stand alongside dr.blalock . But I’m so glad he got his recognition from the hospital and else where and that all those doctors bare witness of him being present in that operation . Plus those in the lab.
He became a lab technician, Drs. Assistant Medical researcher , Teaching Surgeon in reality Mr is used to distinguish Dr. From Surgeons
What a amazing biography of a amazing man Dr Vivien Thomas who GOD had so
graciously gifted, it is so heartbreaking that he never made it to medical school. As
I'm sure he would have been a brilliant surgeon.

Such a story of hard work and perseverance on part of Dr. Vivian Thomas... Such a pioneer... Thank you for bringing his life out through this movie
The end when they uncovered Vivien’s Picture was heartfelt… I felt that!
Thank you for sharing this. God's blessings to you and your loved ones...
