  • The city of Budapest, the Pearl of the Danube, is Hungary's capital with several UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Buda Castle and Andrássy Avenue. We cruised for an hour on the legendary Danube River passing by examples of some of Budapest's finest architectural achievements, such as the magnificent neo-Gothic Parliament building, home of the Holy Hungarian Crown, as well as the Buda Castle, Andrássy Avenue and Heroes' Square. Next, we went to the Fishermen's Bastion (Halászbástya) which is about 100 years old. In medieval times, the fish market was nearby and the bastion was built to commemorate the fishermen who protected this part of the city. The Hero's Square is the largest square in Budapest which was laid out in 1896 to mark the thousandth anniversary of Hungary. The Millennium Monument in the middle of the square was erected to commemorate the 1000-year-old history of the Magyars.
One of the special places to visit along the Danube is the Gellért Hill, located on the Buda side between the Liberty Bridge and the Elisabeth Bridge. We drank some beer at the outdoor cafe and later ate dinner at the Panorama restaurant. The statue and the citadella on the hill is illuminated in the evenings so it is beautiful to look at, but it is even more beautiful to stand at the hill and look out towards the Danube and both the Buda and the Pest side.
