This is the problem South American teams need to overcome. They lose their nerves when they trail by 2 goals or more. Which is why you rarely see South American teams winning by coming from behind nowadays. South America has more talented players than Europe, but Europeans have a better team spirit.

The third goal was Brazil players never expected. They thought the match will go balance, but at that point It was not. It's also the psychology impact to their overconfidence (Look at how emotional they are while singing the national anthem). They are the host. They are the most successful nation in the competition. They felt the third goal was like a big punch to their expectations. I see their face after the 3rd goal was like "Should we hold this scoreline?" "We should end this match early, come on!" I watched this on a big screen on Copacabana beach surrounded by Brazilian fans…it was surreal, then there was a mass robbery on the beach which causes a stampede with everyone running away towards to main road, tables and chairs getting thrown out of the way and I lost my friends in the midst of it. Craziest story of my life
Maybe. But it certainly wasn’t the most *exciting* game in World Cup history. Watching a blowout victory starts to get boring by the end of the game……. or in this case by halftime, already.
Memorable? Maybe but it’s subjective. Anyway just because it has an absurd result doesn't mean it's better. I could list 10 games of the last twenty years of WC far superior in terms of entertainment.
Those 6 minutes where four goals were scored to take it from 1-0 to 5-0 were the craziest 6 minutes of football I have ever seen. It was absolutely surreal. Unfortunately for Brazil, Germany refusing to run up the score is almost more embarrassing, as they still scored 7. Everyone knows it could have been double figures, but it is like the big kids took pity on the small kids and went through the motions.

First of all, to remind the players that they should be focused in the second half as he remembered the 4-4 draw against Sweden in which they were leading by 4 goals. Secondly, it mattered to him not to ridicule the Brazilians, especially not in their home country. He deserves a lot of credit for this, initiating the example the German team would set with their great yet humble play. Fans recognised and appreciated this and the vast majority of Germans were compassionate with the Brazilians rather than ridiculing them. All of this created a lot of respect for one another. Sometimes a match is more than just football and this was one of those instances. Löw first and foremost deserves to be lauded for this classy act. Without his address at halftime, the 'legacy' of this match might very well be a different one.
They actually ridiculed Brazil already in the first half. The fact Löw told them to hold back in the second ridiculed Brazil even more because they were no match to the Germans at this point anymore. So I would have told them to just keep on, if the match ended 14-0 it wouldn't have changed the outcome anyways, it was decided from the point they started the match. There was too much pressure on the Brazilian team.
This is the worst for us Brazilians, we can't even hate the Germans, they were so respectful not only in this game but all the time they were here in Brazil. In the end we were all rooting for Germany in the final against Argentina

Yep. Watching this 10 years later, we can see how much football has changed. Defense became more organized, and Germany beat Scotland 5-1 in a completely different style.
The sportsmanship and compassion at the end of this game is just as world class as the Germans were during it. Genuine care given to their opponents, and the Brazilian players accepting it.
You gotta give to Joachim Low for telling his team to slow down. After the 2nd goal, instead of celebrating, he was perplexed as to what happen to the Brazilian team. Once the 3rd goal scored, he was calling Schwensteiger to tell his team to slow down.

A lot of people commented that they were furious about having no choice but to take bathroom breaks. It made it impossible to keep track of the score. As a result, some wondered "Why are they showing a scene from an old match?" And then realized that it JUST happened and the score really was 5-0!
I wasn't in the stadium but we were watching the game with family at home and the exact thing happened to me! 😂 went to the bathroom and missed three goals then went to bed cause I thought that was gonna be all (I was a child) and missed the other 4 four. I remember watching this game at home with a couple of friends. When the first goal fell we were cheering in excitement, same for the 2nd goal. When Germany scored the third goal I remember one of my friends asking whether this was a simulation - we could not believe what we were seeing. We did really start to feel bad for the Brazilians and simply could not celebrate the goals to follow. We were merely acknowledging them in disbelief. To us this was the most surreal game of football we ever saw. I wonder how the game would have gone if Neymar and Thiago Silva would have been there.

My late grandfather got that match on DvD and regulary watched it when he had a bad day. He really loved football and watching this amazing worldcup with Germany winning was his joy.

@@Mr187Dag I’m not so sure. I think that Germany will bounce back. They’ve had two poor World Cups, but that aside they are over achievers. They weren’t even allowed to play in the 1950 World Cup but West Germany (as was then) won the 1954 edition, even though it was their first tournament back in international football. I’m sure they weren’t allowed to play in the first edition of the European Championship, even though it was 15 years after the war and ridiculous.
I'm brazilian and I remember watching this game with my family while celebrating my mom's birthday. We all felt so sad because of the result that we turned off the TV after the first half ended. I was 15 back then. The result didn't make any of us cry, but we felt devastated and it almost ruined the birthday party. 😟

I remember that this WC win by Germany was extremely difficult, since no one really expected any European team to be able to handle the heat and humidity of Brazil. This tournament was physically really though and that showed during the final, where both teams were on their last breath. Made the win that more satisfying for this golden generation.

I remember the day of this match. I chose to watch a film in the cinema instead of watching the game. After the film finished and I walked home I still remeber how in every sports bar along the way home there were 20+ people standing infront and watching the game. Every 2 minutes everyone was celebrating because yet another goal was scored.

This match is like hammering. Even the Gold medal won at the Rio Olympics won by Brazil against Germany can't summon up the trauma of this night. it's a very huge pain for the Brazil's to handle with. I've never seen a match like this.
I know it seems like a tragedy for you, but you have no idea how many jokes per minute were created by Brazilians on the internet during this game. Brazilians are like that, they make fun of this kind of situation. I must say that it was one of the times I laughed the most in my life, with so many jokes that appeared at the same time among friends and on the internet with each goal that happened. It was definitely not trauma, it was therapy hahaha, so much so that the Brazilians cheered for Germany in the final.

He is. Once at a trip to Munich, I joined a group of fellas playing ball at the park and then Klose showed up and played with us for 30 mins. This was in 2017. End up taking pics with him. He had no airs about him as a world champion and playing in epic matches like these at the world cup. He was born to play football and is a role model for kids to follow.

As a German, this match as special and great, but also so absurd experience. In fact, this actually was the first match I ever watched! Now, I hope our nation AND our players will become so angry and aggressive like the have been in 2014 for 2024. Defeat after defeat and disgrace, that a stabbing against all European nations will happen. I am unfortunately disappointed and also sad about how Germany became overall between 2018 and 2022 Edit: I don't mean however, that we actually stab people. For those possibly too young to have really experienced this World Cup, I cannot overemphasize how shocking this result was. A lot of people thought Brazil might be the best team in the tournament. A German win wasn’t unbelievable, but the score line sure was.
I think it all came down to Müller scoring the first goal. After that the Brazilians lost their temper and began to make one mistake after another which led them to concede 4 more goals in 7 minutes.
Germany coulda gotten even more goals but their coach told them to calm down. I woulda loved to see how many they woulda actually gotten cause this team was one of the most monstrous teams I’ve witnessed not just in the wc but in football itself
It's interesting to watch the dynamics of development of the game: from the confident start of Brazilians during the first 10-15 minutes to the decline of their will and confidence in their strength. After the 3rd goal the team had already nothing common with what it was like in the start.
To be honest that was kind of expactable. Before the match I was like: "Yeah, the Brazilians will sing their anthem with pride and start the match with much determination but quickly they will see that they are just not capable of messing with this German side and as soon as Germany scores the first time, they would be like 'f*ck, what now? We have no clue how to deal with them and no idea how to stand a chance at all!' and sort of fall apart." But I would have never expected something like THIS! I thought it would be 4-0, 5-1 or the like after 90 minutes but it was just 5-0 after 25min played... It's 7-1 only because Germany slowed down. If they would have continued as if nothing has happend, it would have been something around 15-0 in the end. It's just crazy.

i am a german fan in the 2002 final i was 10 years old, i fell ill with a fever when germany lost and i was thinking when will this defeat be avenged, brazil football is very strong with a lot of amazing players. He left the national team and not playing for them anymore.. some even said that the Germans was racist and passed some bad comment about his religion Islam.. before that Germany lost world cup and killed an octopus for prediction.. now i am supporting Brazil again because of childhood memories and cheers.. i have lots of nostalgia moments and people supporting them from a long time even if they don't watch the game or know any players

Brazil was the era when i started watching football.. Ronaldinho was my fav player.. after the retirement of classic players like him and other brazilian players, oliver kahn, zidane, beckham etc i stopped watching.. gone busy in life and no source to watch.. so messi ronaldo era is missing in my life.. now am here back to mbappe haaland era.. now i have a Polish friend.. and i like her too so one more reason not to support Germany hahaha

@@Kristianson1 Lahm is probably the king of slide tackles. especially from behind. Ive never seen someone sliding in from behind and fairly claiming the ball so many times. Not just clearing, but stealing it from the opposition player. And dont forget. the guy generally had the most tackles in many games but only accumulated 20 yellow cards in his carrer. Only 3 times did he lose the ball and it ended in a goal for the other team.
I watched this every day for a month after it happened and I still revisit it every few years to watch it repeatedly again. One of my favorite sports viewing experiences ever and I'm neither Brazilian or German.
The days of the great Miroslav Klose, one of my favorite players. I was supporting Germany, I thought the game with Brazil would be tough and hard, especially on their Home Turf. But when Müeller scored that first goal, I had a feeling it was over. When Klose scored, it definitely was. Also when Brazil scored a goal, my father said: "There goes Neuer's clean sheet." We laughed in disbelief of what just happened, crazy game, crazy world cup.
I can't imagine the amount of shock Brazil fans went through... It's 25 minutes into the game and it's already 3-0 and ,5-0 till the 31st minute... The shock after each goal was clearly visible on their faces, they were in utter disbelief of what was happening in front of them...

I was 13 yrs old at that time. I was watching it with my family. I still remember clearly what I felt and how my family reacted. I think every brazilian who cares about football went through the 7 stages of grief that day, I mean, except for hope.
I'm Canadian, not even a soccer fan and I've watched this probably 20 times. It's a match that transcends soccer and sports into just world history. When they do a Century in Review in the year 2100 this will be in it.
Maybe the best call of any sports game ever, to be alone in the broadcast booth for a world cup semi final, let alone this semi final, and to give the call this announcer did, just legendary. Manages to keep the audience entertained during an absolute meltdown by brazil. To do the job he did given the context and the fact he was alone is an all time performance. Lines like “the little boy is crying his eyes out”, “theyre all going to score at this rate” and “its oscar, oh hes got a goal. And now its brazil one, germany SEVEN” are as iconic to me as the game itself. Just not the same watching that first 30 minutes chopped up into quiet highlight clips. The amount of space between the lines was unbelievable. Brazil didn't prepare this game against a team that has players like Muller who knows how to explore free space.
Also, all of Brazil's offence were long shots and misplaced passes by Germany. Even before they fell apart. Sure, they were missing some key players with Thiago and Neymar, but it's no excuse to ignore every tactical aspect of modern football.
Exactly 9 years ago today, Germany thrashed 1-7!! to Brazil in their own World Cup. The most scandalous win in the entire history of the World Cups. One of those games that will NEVER be forgotten. LEGENDARY DANCE.
It makes the defeat even worse that the Germans behaved perfectly, never overcelebrating, and consoling the Brazilians after the game. They looked like this result was expected and it came so easily for them.
I was just a normal german guy in puberty when our class went to Bergamo to watch this. There was a room full of our class and some other germans in a cellar of a bar. When we went upstairs to grab some beers after the 5-0 every single Italian person who watched the game upstairs was applauding our team. Surreal moment, surreal night... still gives me goosebumps.
His career already would have been incredible without winning the World Cup. The most successful German player of all time and one of the best midfielders in history. Unbelievable how he went on to win the Champions League 4 times with Real Madrid after winning the World Cup.

I'm proud of my favourite team.Even after such huge victory they decided to keep their heads low and were not jubilant of such a big achievement so as not to embarrass the host and the fans.They even stopped scoring out of respect to fans emotions.Not every team will do this.

I watched this on a big screen on Copacabana beach surrounded by Brazilian fans…it was surreal, then there was a mass robbery on the beach which causes a stampede with everyone running away towards to main road, tables and chairs getting thrown out of the way and I lost my friends in the midst of it. They actually ridiculed Brazil already in the first half. The fact Löw told them to hold back in the second ridiculed Brazil even more because they were no match to the Germans at this point anymore. So I would have told them to just keep on, if the match ended 14-0 it wouldn't have changed the outcome anyways, it was decided from the point they started the match. There was too much pressure on the Brazilian team.
This is the worst for us Brazilians, we can't even hate the Germans, they were so respectful not only in this game but all the time they were here in Brazil. In the end we were all rooting for Germany in the final against Argentina

A lot of people commented that they were furious about having no choice but to take bathroom breaks. It made it impossible to keep track of the score. As a result, some wondered "Why are they showing a scene from an old match?" And then realized that it JUST happened and the score really was 5-0!

I remember watching this game at home with a couple of friends.
When the first goal fell we were cheering in excitement, same for the 2nd goal. When Germany scored the third goal I remember one of my friends asking whether this was a simulation - we could not believe what we were seeing. We did really start to feel bad for the Brazilians and simply could not celebrate the goals to follow. We were merely acknowledging them in disbelief.
To us this was the most surreal game of football we ever saw. I wonder how the game would have gone if Neymar and Thiago Silva would have been there.

I'm brazilian and I remember watching this game with my family while celebrating my mom's birthday. We all felt so sad because of the result that we turned off the TV after the first half ended. I remember that this WC win by Germany was extremely difficult, since no one really expected any European team to be able to handle the heat and humidity of Brazil. This tournament was physically really though and that showed during the final, where both teams were on their last breath. Made the win that more satisfying for this golden generation.

I remember the day of this match. I chose to watch a film in the cinema instead of watching the game. After the film finished and I walked home I still remeber how in every sports bar along the way home there were 20+ people standing infront and watching the game. I know it seems like a tragedy for you, but you have no idea how many jokes per minute were created by Brazilians on the internet during this game. Brazilians are like that, they make fun of this kind of situation. I must say that it was one of the times I laughed the most in my life, with so many jokes that appeared at the same time among friends and on the internet with each goal that happened. Klose was one of the most humble and respectful field players.
He is. Once at a trip to Munich, I joined a group of fellas playing ball at the park and then Klose showed up and played with us for 30 mins. This was in 2017. End up taking pics with him. He had no airs about him as a world champion and playing in epic matches like these at the world cup. He was born to play football and is a role model for kids to follow.

I was actually at the airport when I saw the 5-0 half-time score on the airport tv and thought that was the final score. Was shocked but not too surprised that Germany beat them 5-0 since they didn't have Neymar or Silva. I had NO IDEA that there was a whole other half after 😂

What many people don't know: The german Trainer Löw told them in the halftime to slow down because out of respect because they where hosting the world cup

@@Bud787 No man, it's just normal to slow down. It was not an order from the coach, but when you're winning by a lot you naturally take the foot off the gas. You don't want injuries, and it doesn't matter anymore.

As a German, this match as special and great, but also so absurd experience. In fact, this actually was the first match I ever watched!

For those possibly too young to have really experienced this World Cup, I cannot overemphasize how shocking this result was. A lot of people thought Brazil might be the best team in the tournament. A German win wasn’t unbelievable, but the score line sure was.

It's interesting to watch the dynamics of development of the game: from the confident start of Brazilians during the first 10-15 minutes to the decline of their will and confidence in their strength. After the 3rd goal the team had already nothing common with what it was like in the start.

To be honest that was kind of expactable. Before the match I was like: "Yeah, the Brazilians will sing their anthem with pride and start the match with much determination but quickly they will see that they are just not capable of messing with this German side and as soon as Germany scores the first time, they would be like 'f*ck, what now? We have no clue how to deal with them and no idea how to stand a chance at all!' and sort of fall apart."
But I would have never expected something like THIS! I thought it would be 4-0, 5-1 or the like after 90 minutes but it was just 5-0 after 25min played... It's 7-1 only because Germany slowed down. If they would have continued as if nothing has happend, it would have been something around 15-0 in the end. It's just crazy.

i am a german fan in the 2002 final i was 10 years old, i fell ill with a fever when germany lost and i was thinking when will this defeat be avenged, brazil football is very strong with a lot of amazing players. @@Kristianson1 Lahm is probably the king of slide tackles. especially from behind. Ive never seen someone sliding in from behind and fairly claiming the ball so many times. Not just clearing, but stealing it from the opposition player. And dont forget. the guy generally had the most tackles in many games but only accumulated 20 yellow cards in his carrer. Only 3 times did he lose the ball and it ended in a goal for the other team.

I watched this every day for a month after it happened and I still revisit it every few years to watch it repeatedly again. One of my favorite sports viewing experiences ever and I'm neither Brazilian or German.
The days of the great Miroslav Klose, one of my favorite players.
I was supporting Germany, I thought the game with Brazil would be tough and hard, especially on their Home Turf. But when Müeller scored that first goal, I had a feeling it was over. When Klose scored, it definitely was.
Also when Brazil scored a goal, my father said: "There goes Neuer's clean sheet." We laughed in disbelief of what just happened, crazy game, crazy world cup.

I can't imagine the amount of shock Brazil fans went through... It's 25 minutes into the game and it's already 3-0 and ,5-0 till the 31st minute... The shock after each goal was clearly visible on their faces, they were in utter disbelief of what was happening in front of them...

Maybe the best call of any sports game ever, to be alone in the broadcast booth for a world cup semi final, let alone this semi final, and to give the call this announcer did, just legendary. Manages to keep the audience entertained during an absolute meltdown by brazil. To do the job he did given the context and the fact he was alone is an all time performance. Lines like “the little boy is crying his eyes out”, “theyre all going to score at this rate” and “its oscar, oh hes got a goal. And now its brazil one, germany SEVEN” are as iconic to me as the game itself. Just not the same watching that first 30 minutes chopped up into quiet highlight clips. Glad this is available as the full game on youtube now

The amount of space between the lines was unbelievable. Brazil didn't prepare this game against a team that has players like Muller who knows how to explore free space.
Also, all of Brazil's offence were long shots and misplaced passes by Germany. Even before they fell apart. Sure, they were missing some key players with Thiago and Neymar, but it's no excuse to ignore every tactical aspect of modern football.

It makes the defeat even worse that the Germans behaved perfectly, never overcelebrating, and consoling the Brazilians after the game. They looked like this result was expected and it came so easily for them.
I was just a normal german guy in puberty when our class went to Bergamo to watch this. There was a room full of our class and some other germans in a cellar of a bar. When we went upstairs to grab some beers after the 5-0 every single Italian person who watched the game upstairs was applauding our team. Surreal moment, surreal night... still gives me goosebumps.

Still remember watching this live. Had just gotten a projector and set it all up, 20 friends over we were all over the sofas and the floor getting any space we could. And then as Germany started scoring I was falling apart. Always been a Brasil fan and couldn’t believe how they fell apart with Neymar.
