This was a fascinating match between two world class teams. Neither side gave the other an extra inch. Both teams were tactically sound & the physicality was off the charts. Penalties, early goals, crossbar hits, controversial penalty shouts, last ditch tackles, brilliant saves, red cards ------ this match had everything. And the field was full of legendary players. I was 14 years old back then and as a Frenchy, after that game, I cried and cursed the Italians for winning dirty. But after rewatching this game for the first time tonight, I realize Italia had a slightly better organised team. It's very mild but visible. French team had a gap between midfield and attack, and Zidane could barely express himself as he used to, because the Italian defense locked him up very well. Although it was not a spectacular game to watch, it was technicaly but especially, tactically a pleasure for the eyes. This French team probably deserved to win the tournament, that's for sure. But Italia had a legendary team and they won the game you need to win in order to be crown. And this italian team surely deserved to win a trophy. I mean, look at those names, everyone is a legend in this team. France only clearly dominated beginning of second half and during after time, before the red card. That's it. I can't believe I'm gonna say that but well done Italia, you won it fair and square. My heart is now at peace. It will forever remain a French tragedy tho.

It's rare for a team to have such a bracket. Also if you watch the games, especially Spain and Brazil they are beautiful. Only the penalty against Portugal could be discussed and still, it's foul anyway. France 2006 was a great team and that World Cup overall was one of the best.

French here. I’m still a staunch believer that we were superior on the paper but this match was another proof football ain’t an exact science I guess. Nonetheless, very enjoyable to get through all theses memories again even though the Zidane-Materazzi episode is still hard to swallow. 2006 was my earliest WC i remember. I was 6 years old back then. The matches used to be around 10pm in our country. We used to watch those matches together. I didn't know what football was back then, but i just wanted to be a part of those family gatherings. This match literally took me back to my childhood 😧😦

Growing up, zizou was my favorite player. I remember watching this match as a 6 year old boy and crying all night long. It broke my heart when he got the red card. In France for the next month, you couldn’t leave your house without seeing a shot of his head butt. Everywhere you went you were constantly reminded of what happened this night.

I was 14 years old back then and as a Frenchy, after that game, I cried and cursed the Italians for winning dirty. But after rewatching this game for the first time tonight, I realize Italia had a slightly better organised team. It's very mild but visible. French team had a gap between midfield and attack, and Zidane could barely express himself as he used to, because the Italian defense locked him up very well. Although it was not a spectacular game to watch, it was technicaly but especially, tactically a pleasure for the eyes. This French team probably deserved to win the tournament, that's for sure. But Italia had a legendary team and they won the game you need to win in order to be crown. And this italian team surely deserved to win a trophy. I mean, look at those names, everyone is a legend in this team. France only clearly dominated beginning of second half and during after time, before the red card. That's it. I can't believe I'm gonna say that but well done Italia, you won it fair and square. My heart is now at peace. It will forever remain a French tragedy tho.

It's rare for a team to have such a bracket. Also if you watch the games, especially Spain and Brazil they are beautiful. Only the penalty against Portugal could be discussed and still, it's foul anyway. France 2006 was a great team and that World Cup overall was one of the best.

besides this fantastic match, commentators back then were so much better than what we have today, the passion was unmatched.
Growing up, zizou was my favorite player. I remember watching this match as a 6 year old boy and crying all night long. It broke my heart when he got the red card. France played better but Italy got a regolar gol from Toni took away, the crossbar from Materazzi and the penalty for Malouda which wasn't a penalty. So in the end, Italy just had something more in their heart. A great final bewtween two legendary team. Zidane, Henry, Trezeguet, Ribery, Vieira, Barthez and Buffon, Cannavaro, Pirlo, Totti, Del Piero, Toni, Materazzi and more.
