Boyata had played three clear matches and he was substituted because Kompany was preferred by Martinez who made very big mistakes. (Like wanting first place in group G) Second place would have led Belgium to the final without having to pass the tough Japanese and... Brazil!. The English coach had a finer nose.
Japan was already physically desperate at the time. The players responded to the interviews after the game. The 30 min extended game would have been too long, which led them to take highest risk towards victory within 90 mins.
