This is one of the coolest challenges I have ever seen. Being a car enthusiast and gravitating towards classics I love to see guys like this who are building cars that can compete with modern technology using classic cars as the base. Having a car that they can change around and do road courses and top speed challenges with the same car is just incredible.
I've known of this car since 1989 from Old silver State open VHS tapes. I think it was an aluminum 540 Donovan block. Hit top speed of 220! R.i.p to the couple that lost their lives in that testarossa.😞
The new Z/28 was the under dog, if you ask me. Big Red has been the one to beat for some time. It's almost not fair putting a stock new car against something so modified. The result speaks volumes to the success of new handling technologies, and I applaud Chevy for it. I'm still an old school guy, and would choose Big Red every time. That sound makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Hehe...
For those who are pissed about not knowing which Camaro won, the new car's best time was a 1:36. Big Red's best was a 1:41 until the driver lost control and crashed it. The damage was nothing too severe, but it was enough to not be allowed back on the track. Such a shame.
If you thought this would make me subscribe to your Channel or HRM you're sorely mistaken. Lame. Big waste of time honestly. Very misleading. You read the "vs" and expect more than a commercial.
My name is Jimmy. Im a gear head trapped in a guitar players body. Got a 79 Camaro only thing stock is the block. Big fan of all the Motortrend channel shows and others like Drive, Smoking Tire, and Bad Bowtie. I LOVE the Big Red Challenges and hope that in your youtube channel Big Red challenges all the newer hot rods coming out!! Your crew is awesome and KAINT WAIT for new challenges!! Big Red fan JimmyCC
Well that's a fast way to make me subscribe to your channel.. oh I mean not at all... I didn't want to watch an almost 11 minute magazine commercial. Total fucking bullshit.
Great story and video! GM did a great job with the new Z/28 but the comparo was very unfavourable to Big Red! A monster big block without any eletronic aids on a freezing track not known to the driver and designed for bikes could not go well! Now I feel it's only fair a rematch on a track chosen by the Big Red crew!!
Bug red is the best camaro ever! I’ll take it over any new camaro, even over the newer zl1 1LE. The amount of engineering and custom fab work is absurd! God damn mad scientists built that car! I love it!!!
R+T did a comparison or Mark Donahue's old Trans-Am vs a new Camaro. They indicated that the new one was faster, but if you notice in the pictures they had the Trans-Am car fitted with old, hard Goodyear Blue Streaks. (You can tell they were hard by the way they had no "globbing" and the way the dirt was stuck to them.) An old Gen 1 Camaro can be lightened to 2800 lbs pretty easily. Put good shocks, low racing springs, swaybars in it and just 350HP in it and the new stuff cannot keep up. People forget that 700lbs difference is like adding 3 big guys as passengers. There is no way... These magazines are fun to read, but we know who pays their bills.
Not a true comparison by any means,1969 Camaro's all had really poor handling and were very dangerous, the subframes with a big block had so much flex not to mention a tiny front sway bar.
its not a stock 69 camaro at all and if your eyes and ability to assess the speed of an object are working you will be fully aware big red dominated this event quite effortlessly. the front tires on big red are wider than the rear tires on the new camaro, the stance and suspension of big red are designed to make child-splay out of courses like this, the engine is tuned to put down power in the rpm range of the gearing the car is set up with.the new camaro is more minivan/suv than performance car.
Everyone is complaining about your time being wasted. Spoiler alert: 2014 Z28 won. The Big Red Camaro was slower than the Boss 302 as well. Also, they drove Big Red into a barrier and destroyed one of the front fenders.
No definately not. With GMs 0 percent financing a ZL1 is within reach, the Z28 just showed up at the local dealer and its over 15k more. But if you have priced out brakes you know where a lot of that money is going. They can keep their handmade Ls7. For that money is should have the Ls9 or at least the LSA.
I feel scammed, or gypt, thanx...and at the end you want to tell me its in the friccan magazine?!? First of all, if you were born in th 60s, or 70s, and even the eighties, all you really want to see is big red punish, the " little vett" (with camaro clothes on) leave me out of the teasing....im sure the 69 did what it was suppose to do.
Sorry about the cliffhanger. Part of our deal with Hot Rod Mag was to not spoil the ending. Check out the article at hotrod.com or pick up a copy of the Mag, it's a good story.
I'll tell you how it turned out! Big Red gets crashed and HRM states a new Z28 will cost about 75K! I wonder how many recalls that car will have?! Smh.
I didn't really care for the article. Seems like they were on too little of a deadline throughout the testing. And honestly its not fare to have the race done on the track the new camaro had been driving and testing on for quite some time. Huge advantage for the new Camaro guy. But they probably knew that and set it up that way for advertising. The big corporate guys aren't dumb. Seems like they made a "set-up-to-win and hope no one notices type of scenario" it seems like to me.
New motors still sound great, and are better motors all around... First thing i did when i bought mine was rip out that old junk boat anchor boomer motor.
Be sure to catch Big Red's docu-series, Big Red: The Original Outlaw Racer, premiering this July on NBCSN. Watch the trailer here: ruclips.net/video/0mp3yQQ9xIo/видео.html
wow i just wasted 10mins of my life whats the point of putting it on youtube if you dont show the end.just another marketing scam.big red? nah big joke!welcome to the electronic age boys.Magazines are dying so do the world a favour and find your place.
Don't know what dumb results they came up with but I have a 67 Camaro properly set up for tracks with a strong 350. It weights under 3k lbs and will run away from any of the newer heavy stuff.
Too bad that music was playing at 9:13. I would have liked to hear the car. Also, I guess you guys didn't wipe the lens before you took the video. I know - nag nag nag.
if you gotta change out all that stuff just to make it compete with the new camaro tells you right there its just an old bucket of iron.I'm not a fan of these old cars.
RJ not so red anymore I see more grey than red! Lol, gotta get my digs in where I can since 1988, things sure have changed since 88 but one thing never changes " I feel the need... " he can finish the rest when he gets back, maybe the manta at Bonneville my friend if this covid crap gets better
One question, if you're changing the whole car, then what is the point? Its not even remotely the same car they wanted to run against? Might as well just say " We're building a 1st gen Camaro to run head to head with the new Z-28. "
How dare you "troll" us into watching this ad for your magazine!
Big Red: 1:41:84 first lap
New Red: 1:37:21 first lap, 1:36:17 best lap
Thank you
How about after the first lap?
Such a great video I was planning on sharing with many others until the end, thank you for wasting my time.
Exactly. Fuck you!!!!!
Daxx Green the maker of this video of TheAlmightyApe
🤣

as much as i love the new z/28, the classics like big red are still my favorite.
No ending to a cliff hanger. Let down.
thanks for wasting my time.

"The Baddest '69 Camaro ever." for real !!
I'D TAKE "BIG RED" ALL DAY-EVERYDAY.
The reason I watched the video was to see how it turned out.....
The Z/28 beat Big Red by 4 seconds before it slid off the track and crumpled a front fender.
If you thought this would make me subscribe to your Channel or HRM you're sorely mistaken. Lame. Big waste of time honestly. Very misleading. You read the "vs" and expect more than a commercial.
All that power under a stock cowl hood. Love Big Red, don't like being trolled.
Should have checked the comments first.
Big Red is my dream car anyday.

IMHO big red sounded better... looks better as well...
Dont bother watching the video. No times posted, no actual racing video....garbage
I've been a fan since high school! I'm 41 now and still cant forget! Silver State Classic!! I now own a red 1205 Z28 because of you!
Awesome, didn't know they made them over 800 years ago.
What? No ending? WTF ?
I believe big red went off the track when it came around to the hot laps
The only reason I’m a Camaro fan. In my eyes Big Red is the greatest car ever made.
There's nothing like the sound of those old big blocks. '69 wins hands down!
Well that's a fast way to make me subscribe to your channel.. oh I mean not at all... I didn't want to watch an almost 11 minute magazine commercial. Total fucking bullshit.
i would love to see this car run the nurburgring, just the sound of this car at full song! damn!
"David versus Goliath." David having 800 HP and Goliath having 505 HP ... Makes a lot of sense dude
It is 7 years on ... I think it would be ok to spoil it now.
Ok, I'm at 7:37 and just watched Big Red accelerate around a corner and down the straight away...surely the new Z/28 can't keep up with Big Red...
What a waste of time and memory.
Set up from the beginning?
Bug red is the best camaro ever! I’ll take it over any new camaro, even over the newer zl1 1LE. The amount of engineering and custom fab work is absurd! God damn mad scientists built that car! I love it!!!

Damn it! What a tease. Love them both. All out race car vs street car, should be interesting.
Everyone is complaining about your time being wasted. Spoiler alert:
2014 Z28 won. The Big Red Camaro was slower than the Boss 302 as well. Also, they drove Big Red into a barrier and destroyed one of the front fenders.
You gotta love how the new Z has almost no body roll on the corners.
but can many love the price of the new Z28?
No definately not. With GMs 0 percent financing a ZL1 is within reach, the Z28 just showed up at the local dealer and its over 15k more. But if you have priced out brakes you know where a lot of that money is going. They can keep their handmade Ls7. For that money is should have the Ls9 or at least the LSA.
Bob Neil dry sump Ls7 would be better for track use. an LSA is 14K as opposed to the ls7 at 16K.
The sound is the winner here.
Lots of comparisons, what was the weight difference? I'd have to assume Big Red is a couple hundred pounds lighter.
In the famous quote of Vincent Vega "What a gyp"!..
I feel scammed, or gypt, thanx...and at the end you want to tell me its in the friccan magazine?!? I hope big red kicks there ass !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry about the cliffhanger. Part of our deal with Hot Rod Mag was to not spoil the ending. Check out the article at hotrod.com or pick up a copy of the Mag, it's a good story.
No
How much did you guys get paid???
So...the rest of the video footage then?
wish i could thumbs this down more than once....
It seems the guy in the old school is a better driver for sure
this video has made me dislike hodrod magazine.
The 69 Camaro was the best car ever sold in history of the world!!!!
Yeah thanks for no numbers and 13 mins of my life
A teaser?! Lol okay...
they left the part out where big red spins out and crashes...
Big Red is so badass, almost gives me wood just hearing it scream.
I love big red iv been following these guys forever older is better, il put my money on big red !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like a kitten be raped by a Bengal tiger! New car never stood a chance in real race.
I'll tell you how it turned out! Big Red gets crashed and HRM states a new Z28 will cost about 75K! I wonder how many recalls that car will have?! Smh.
should of dumped in a lsx454 small block in big red with twin turbos you would of spanked the bark off the new camaro!
Wasn't this car ban from the Silver State Challenge?
The black test Camaro is the V-6 base model.
Does anyone know what lap times they did?
I didn't really care for the article. Seems like they were on too little of a deadline throughout the testing. And honestly its not fare to have the race done on the track the new camaro had been driving and testing on for quite some time. Huge advantage for the new Camaro guy. ha ? I guess the new z28 won. love the old steel.
The old car looks a ton better than the new one. New car looks like an obese version of the old one. Sounds better too.
No need to buy a hot rod magazine to know how it turned out, big red ate little reds lunch.
Oh no.. we have to set up Big Red for road racing or we're going to lose the shop
Well you guys know that I will welcome to you back in Ely at any time you want to run SSCC again.
So can anyone tell me who won?
Guess the only thing left for Big Red is drag week?
I mean don't the guys making the new camaros and mustangs miss the good ol roar that the classics had?
Bob Howard blame it on the government
New motors still sound great, and are better motors all around... First thing i did when i bought mine was rip out that old junk boat anchor boomer motor.
@@biginchsmallblock Yeah ok! Run that truck engine of yours flat out at redline for awhile report back
@@gordocarbo Ive been doing it for decades now without issue. I guess you are only familiar with slow/old junk?
What a waste of 10 minutes of my life.
Haven't finished the video yet.....but damn ...stacking the cards aint ya
Yaaay! Camaro generation race😍🤩😆😁👍❤❤❤❤❤
Be sure to catch Big Red's docu-series, Big Red: The Original Outlaw Racer, premiering this July on NBCSN. Watch the trailer here: ruclips.net/video/0mp3yQQ9xIo/видео.html
They wrecked Big Red at the track on their second or third pass
Wat a teaser.lol
how much does a camaro 2014 cost in the US? it's really expensive here in indo
$76k sticker
but a 1lt or whatever is only like 20k but the downside is its a v6
It's like 30k for an SS. 37k ish for a 1le, that's a serious car for little money. You can also get a 5.0 w/ track pack and Recaros for 35k.
I like this video ~
Is that Kyle Gass?
who won ?
Glad I read comments 1st. Didn't, and won't watch. Data is expensive for some of us.....
I would push an old camaro, before id own a new 1
Did they even race head to head?
wow i just wasted 10mins of my life whats the point of putting it on youtube if you dont show the end.just another marketing scam.big red? nah big joke!welcome to the electronic age boys.Magazines are dying so do the world a favour and find your place.
So the Camaro won? By 5 seconds and lost by 11mph.
2014 Z28 runs laps 5 seconds faster than Big Red.. Yikes ...!
Don't know what dumb results they came up with but I have a 67 Camaro properly set up for tracks with a strong 350. It weights under 3k lbs and will run away from any of the newer heavy stuff.
+John Elliott What's your point? Race car vs street car ya you should win.
Too bad that music was playing at 9:13. I would have liked to hear the car.
Also, I guess you guys didn't wipe the lens before you took the video.
I know - nag nag nag.
I wonder how Bid Red would stack up with a lighter and compact LSx motor. I'm sure they could crank out 850 HP with an LS7 or an LS9.
New camero weighs 1,000 pounds more than big red
All alum 555 is light
if you gotta change out all that stuff just to make it compete with the new camaro tells you right there its just an old bucket of iron.I'm not a fan of these old cars.
Gets kind of ridiculous when you see the driver get into Big Red. Full on purpose built race car vs a production street car. Meh.... Still a cool vid.
RJ not so red anymore I see more grey than red! Lol, gotta get my digs in where I can since 1988, things sure have changed since 88 but one thing never changes " I feel the need... " he can finish the rest when he gets back, maybe the manta at Bonneville my friend if this covid crap gets better
how much for big red.. looks good
2014 z28 won by 4 seconds
Lol Chevy couldn’t show big red absolutely dominate the new Camaro
Nice tease! Also suggest losing the music, I'd much rather hear the engines!
car is a legend, video is bad, no race
V6 Camaro needed higher temp pads!
I love motor oil and that kind of thing.
One question, if you're changing the whole car, then what is the point? Its not even remotely the same car they wanted to run against? Might as well just say " We're building a 1st gen Camaro to run head to head with the new Z-28. "
Big Red aways win !
Big red is the shit.
To bad big red caught on fire a few weeks ago
