That finger trick is not actually reliable. Because of how standardized human bodies are its somewhat reliable just by chance, but hand shape/finger length can vary. One of the few reliable metrics for hand to pecker is the difference between index and ring finger. The longer the ring is relative to the index, the longer the pp. This is because the ring finger is the only finger effected by testosterone exposure in the womb, which is the primary influence on male physical developments in general. If theyre around the same size, a little under six inches. The bigger the ring finger, the longer it is, the lesser the ring finger is the smaller.

I used to be a grademan (surveying without the schooling). I used to use tricks like that last guy. I got *INSANELY* good at distances from cents to hundreds of meters. And had to convert metric to imperial on the fly. I'm also very good with weights as i used to portion lots of food when I was a kitchen manager. I didn't even need a scale. I used one, but was always bang on.

Pro tip: Measure your palm from the base of your thumb to the base of your pinky. There's a significant chance that it's approximately 4 inches. Mine is on the dot. Learned that in shop class 20 years ago, one of the few useful bits of information I retained from that era. Apparently it's how a horses height used to be measured for sale and such, in "hands".

This is how I do it at work. 2nd joint of my pointer finger is roughly two inches. From there, you can estimate almost any length
most people understand what a cm is so they don't have to guess a random measure with no sense at all.
