The Most Complex Automatic Transmission I've Ever Put In A LEGO Car
After spending the past two videos building, improving, and testing a unique design for an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT), the time has finally come to put it in a car and give it a drive.
The first challenge was just fitting the automatic CVT within the chassis of the car, since the CVT wheels needed room to change size. With the car built, I first tested it by driving it up some slopes of different inclines, before using it to pull trailers loaded with increasingly heavy weights. Finally, I added steering to the car and gave it another test-drive.
Then, I tried coupling two of the automatic CVTs together to allow for a wider range of gear ratios. I put this transmissio...

But Does My Automatic LEGO CVT Actually Work?
Просмотров 93 тыс.Месяц назад
In my last video, I worked on creating an automatic continuously variable transmission, which could automatically vary it's gear ratio when I applied more resistance to the output, to increase the output torque while decreasing the output speed. However, while the decrease in output speed was clear to see, I wanted a way to show the increase in output torque, as that was the whole purpose of th...
Building A Better LEGO CVT (No Slipping!)
Просмотров 108 тыс.2 месяца назад
CVTs! First off, I tested out some CVT designs that used cones and belts to achieve a continuously variable gear ratio. While these designs were very elegant, they all began to slip when I applied any significant resistance to the output, and the use of rubber belts meant they also had quite a lot of friction. This led me to creating a CVT that used size-changing wheels to vary the gear ratio. ...
LEGO Mechanical Speed-Graphing System
Просмотров 67 тыс.3 месяца назад
When it comes to measuring rotational speed mechanically, without the use of electronics, the simplest and most elegant mechanisms are the Watt governor and Hartnell governor, both of which use hanging weights that are free to swing outwards at high speeds. However, after some testing, I could see that the accuracy and precision of these mechanisms weren't always great, so I started looking at ...
Building A LEGO Car Not As Intended
Просмотров 102 тыс.4 месяца назад
I began work on this video interested to test out a unique concept for an omni-directional treadmill. However, after building and testing it, I was curious to see if the same concept could be used to create an omni-directional car instead. Making this change required some pretty big alterations to the design, but after several modifications I ended up with a novel and unique car that could mano...
Can I Build A LEGO Gearbox WITHOUT GEARS?
Просмотров 138 тыс.4 месяца назад
Gears are used in almost all mechanical systems, and with good reason, since they’re the simplest and most efficient means of transferring rotational power, along with belts and chains. So I wanted to find out if I could design a 3-gear gearbox without using any of these components. Enjoy the video! Can LEGO Juggle?
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.7 месяцев назад
In this video, I design and test different ideas for a LEGO juggling machine to juggle ping-pong balls. I started out by creating mechanisms that used springs to launch the balls: these worked really well with just one or two balls, showing great accuracy and reliability. However, they simply couldn’t keep up with the higher speeds required to juggle three or more balls. I then moved on to a de...
Making LEGO Cars Do Loops
Просмотров 18 тыс.9 месяцев назад

Trying To Evade LEGO Motion Tracker Shooter
Просмотров 7 тыс.11 месяцев назад
In this video, I use Lego Mindstorms NXT ultrasonic sensors to create a motion tracking system. I first build a simple tracker for horizontal motion only. I experiment with different sensor positions and refine the code controlling the tracker’s movement to improve its responsiveness while trying to prevent oscillation. I then move on to build a tracker capable of horizontal and vertical moveme...

Working LEGO Omni-Directional Treadmill
Просмотров 10 тыс.Год назад
In this video, I build and test a Lego omni-directional treadmill. It works by having a large treadmill with many smaller, perpendicular treadmills on it, allowing for motion in two perpendicular directions. The biggest challenge when designing this machine was powering the smaller treadmill modules despite their motion on the larger treadmill. Another challenge was minimising the weight of the...
Building The Smallest RC LEGO Car
Просмотров 518 тыс.Год назад
In this video, I build the smallest possible RC Lego car, using only Power Functions components. To count as a remote control car, I decided that the vehicle had to be able to drive and turn independently. I started by building a simple but compact car. I then tested it by measuring the horizontal and vertical gaps it could fit through, and its turning radius. I tested its maneuverability by dr...
LEGO Automatic Continuously Variable Transmission
Просмотров 447 тыс.Год назад
In this video, I build a prototype for an automatic continuously variable transmission. I then test how its gear ratio varies with load torque. The results prompt me to expand upon the gearbox design so it can have a higher gear ratio range. I then put the improved gearbox in a car and test it climbing slopes and encountering obstacles.

Did you come up with this from an existing transmission? Because if not you might be a genius lol. I'm prob wrong but I feel like this could be applied to an actual car and solve the belt/power problem.

To be honest, I expected you to ditch the idea after you explained the problem of rotational direction. That makes the transmission useless for most cases. Somehow expected different ideas, not to improve on a a funny but useless one.

@16:00 a simple fix to stop the first set from unspooling under its own load would be a stronger rubberband. since its dealing with higher loads it will be more... strict when it decides to unfurl the arms to push ratios. since it lives under a higher load, the extra force to unfurl would be a simple fix for more usable ratios on the multiplied side.

    • @ivanf4023
      @ivanf4023 14 дней назад

The first road-going vehicle with CVT was made in 1958. The problem though is that CVTs don't have a natural drive-train braking function like other vehicles. If you don't think that's a problem put your car in neutral every time you go downhill and see how long your brakes last. This is not a problem with snowmobiles however. Snowmobiles have a ton of ground-friction and the first snowmobile with cvt was made in 1950 and they're pretty much all CVT since the 1970s.

These seem great, but in practice on an actual vehicle, they suck. The one in my brand new Ford slips like it going out, but took it in to have it fixed, and was told it was perfectly normal. My car is now for sale and I’m getting a Toyota with an actual good automatic transmission. I miss manual transmissions.

Toyota pretty much fixed cvt problems by giving it one actual gear (1st gear) for getting the car moving and then transfering to cvt for any other driving. This relieves stress that causes a lot of cvts to fail
