why did they start with pencil and then go to ink and then scan and redo it in svg? why not just start with svg using modern tools? It isn't like they benefit from the pencil and ink: it is redone using digital scanning and tracing anyway. This workshop isn't spending extra time to achieve the highest level of precision and quality, they are just following the steps and hoping that tedium translates to perceived quality.
I've got zero complaints about the machining though. That was bang on.

In the 1980s the rest of the world was fascinated by the trend in Japan to just 'find' expensive ways of consuming. This is a great example, of turning tradition into a massively expensive modern caricature of the original solution to a problem that no longer exists. So VERY Japanese. GREAT engineering, pointless exercise.

Sure, most of the world doesn't use seals, but it's still very commonly used in asian countries, as these are often used to sign off on personal documents. While most are very standard stamps, some families might get a really fancy one made to have as a family heirloom, such as having them carved from jade. This video shows off a very nice fancy machined one. If it's a family heirloom, might as well go all out.

What time period are you imagining where people were more appreciative of computer aided electrical discharge machining? don't get me wrong these are super neat stamps, and they also make some really cool metal puzzles, but they are all essentially expensive toys with absurdly precise tolerances. I'm actually baffled that with their very expensive equipment, this is what they are using it for...like how does that business model work? Is this just a side business to keep these very expensive machines running at capacity when they aren't getting orders for precision machined components? It seems a little bit like sending your Michelin star chef to the McDonalds down the street to make fries on slow nights.

The machining tolerance, precision, attention to detail, beauty & polish is likely the best I've ever seen- I have machining experience & I have made gauge blocks precise & mirrored enough, that if you pressed them together, one side would stick to the other just from how good the tolerances were, but to make something like this I believe it would carry a greater sense of pride with it. That said, if this is a CEO thing or something fine, but if it's something like an inspection or government seal, the cost seems overly prohibitive, especially for the taxpayers. It seams eccentric rather than practical, unless it happens to be near impossible to counterfeit.

Es excelente diseño y construcción para un sello, los felicito. Pero, ¿Podrian gastar menos agua en el proceso de fabricación? Gracias y saludos muy cordiales.

That step of editing the vertices by hand is PAINSTAKING and I love it.

Wow, that is some precise engineering and tools! We're looking at thousandths of millimeters being machined at some points! And just the attention to care of assembly of the seal!
This must be made for only those that are very important or wealthy. I can't imagine that even if common Japanese people need their seals for all sorts of reasons like document signing and official forms, to have a seal THAT well crafted is mind blowing! Most people's seals are just no more than a rubber stamp nowadays!

I wonder how much one of these seals cost? Looks pricey!

I used wire EDM machining to make inspection gauges for aerospace...the accuracy can be incredible, as demonstrated.
