Elon Musk would be no one without china. lol
Its not going to beat a Tesla, simply because its soooo much heavier. Better to do a 700km test: 1. Result might look much better for BYD, and Tesla Model Y will still win by atleast 15 mintues, 2. How often do people actually do 1000km in one go, 700km is a more realistic test, people might do a handful of those during their ownership. I've had my BYD Seal for a year now, expect for the first week, I took it out on a long trip... and did a 15min fast charge, after that its been at home sipping on 16amp charger and doing daily commutes, its pretty good actually.
Why don't reviewers become familiar with how screens are used for functions before being criticcal. The 3-finger swipe up/down or across instantly adjusts temperature and fan speed. The BYD owners I know just *talk* to their car to carry out ALL basic functions, like navigation. music, winding up/down windows or open/closing the sun roof or shade.
I find it funny how these Tesla fanboy reviewers from the UK keep trying to talk down on Chinese cars whilst can no longer hide the elephant in the room. Times have changed and it is evident that Chinese cars are better built than many Western counterparts hence offering a much better value for money. 😊
10:04 In the BYD Dolphin is possible to adjust temperature and fan speed using a 3-finger multi-touch even when the AndroidAuto/Carplay layer is on top, moving up and down for temperature and left and right for fan speed. I assume this model has that feature too.
A glaring error from the many car reviewers on BYD cars. There is no need to dig into multiple menus levels to adjust aircond settings. 3 finger swipe from left to right (or vice-versa) adjusts the fan speed. 3 finger swipe from top to bottom adjusts the temperature. You can also use voice commands.
Btw this was designed by Wolfgang egger. No wonder it probably looks more western like than most byd vehicles and also has that sporty, coupe like style.
I have a BYD Atto 3 here in Australia. A very impressive smaller EV. Had it for two years now and one of the best decisions I've ever made. The drive is maybe a little too soft for some but I enjoy it and more importantly, 'so does her indoors'.
Which is clear why the tax needs to be imposed, else the Americans and Germans will have a hard time keeping up I guess. My GLA feels cheaper in comparison but sold at a more premium price 😅
just because China have funded research & are miles ahead of the Americans & Germans, why should they be penalised? Germany have been ignorant thinking they'll always be #1.. not anymore.
Odd that you consider the price competitive compared to the model Y. Small difference in cost but the Tesla has better range and significantly better software and charging infrastructure. Byd might be more competitive if it was on offer at the same price as local markets.
For adjusting air con temp, there’s the 3-finger swipe. And if I’m not mistaken, you can use voice control for total touch-less control. One would think that a professional car reviewer would have done their homework on these things, instead of just lazily repeating this old criticism.
Why are they so expensive in the UK? The base Tesla and expected price for base Sealion in Australia is AUD55,000. That’s equivalent to GBP30,000. I know the VAT is 10% higher in the UK and Australia is closer to China for shipping, but that gap for similar RHD vehicles is ridiculous.
Tariff to protect EU market from being overrun, 10% since earlier and about +30% since this month. I know that Uk is not EU but the prices for Europe is set more central.
The S7 has an interior as good as Audi if not better, the design looks to be up against the Cupra Tavascan, Skoda Enyaq and Xpeng G6.. the choices is down to price for most buyers, I guess. It's a top design mid range price Suv EV, if you like the Seal sedan.the sealion 7 is a worthy option. Oh , it has Dynaudio speakers 🔊 on board... Great set up.
@@N1ckZ He's absolutely correct. I've owned 23 German cars so far and at the Paris motor show I had the same opinion. The BYD SEA LION felt much better built than the 100k starting price Audi Q8 etron. Genuinely impressive

As a 6 year Tesla owner I’m loving my new Renault Scenic. Just been Wakefield to Leicester and back and used only 55% of the battery. Range is awesome which is so important to me and tech works great.
I drove a Scenic a few weeks back here in France where I live. Lovely car, bit bigger than my e-Niro and a whole generation of tech better..EVs are developing fast but going on 6 years with the Kia have to say it's been brilliant and totally reliable.
Same here, the new Scenic is incredible! I tried this BYD. A cheap interior, very bad in my opinion 🤷🏻♂️ Tesla is just a show off car. Well overrated.
This is going to start at under 30,000 pounds (A$60,000) in Australia. I'll be buying an electric SUV next year. I'm between this, an Xpeng G6 or a Deepal S07. I haven't been in a Sea Lion 7 yet, but it looks great, and I've driven the Seal and love it. The Deepal and the Xpeng are both lovely inside too. It's a fun choice to have to make.
@@HowardNeil-k5r We're not involved in a silly trade war with China, so no EV-specific anti-dumping tariffs. And we have a free trade agreement with China, so there are no normal tariffs either. Yes the European car industry is doomed. Though i can see the argument it will too expensive in the US with the 100 percent tarrifs.
In my area in Australia they are everywhere. Selling really well here. Talk to a couple owners and they love the cars. See mostly the Seal & Atto cars.
@jefftyt Newcastle NSW, and I drive to Central Coast for the day still see heaps of BYDs. Parked next to a few different ones just at Cost'co at Boolaroo as well. I'd guess I see 40% are Seal (sedan) 30% Atto rest evenly split between the Dolphin and the Sealion hybrid. Probably see more once the Shark comes out with its out there BYD logo on the front.
They really need to sort the naming out for the western markets. They've listened by removing the BUILD YOUR DREAMS lettering off the Dolphin, but the actual model names need adjusting to western tastes.
BYD main market is in Asia, why waste time on western market when they will get tariffed anyway? Like 100 million percent tariffs that are expected for anything superior that can enter western market? It's useless, they better focus on Asian and south American markets which are more reliable.
Their names are absolutely fine. Better than giving them random letters and numbers, which other brands insist on doing. I for one am glad to see proper names making a return. It's no different to Western brands naming their cars like Ford Puma, Volkswagen Fox, Opel Manta, Volkswagen Beetle, Reliant Robin, etc etc.
@@lucasroper46 The model name is fine ('Sealion' is a bit suspect though in my own opinion) but it's when it's an Atto '3' or a Sealion '7' - the numbers having zero relevancy to a western market as they're newly introduced to us. Or a Seal 'U-DM-i'. Adding a badge to the back of the car to reference the 0-60 time is something that is off too.
I think one very important thing for companies to understand is that deceptive marketing can only work for market leaders and only if it is very subtle. For newcomers you have to always follow a clear naming scheme and always make it easily comparable with its rival and what you want to put it against. Prime example of doing it right, is AMD Ryzen 1st gen that made it crystal clear what to compare each CPU with.
The digit 7 is being used by Chinese EVs to denote a mid Size segment mostly SUVs or sedans with plugin or EV power train, examples include Zeekr 7X, Li auto L7, this Sealion 7, forthcoming Xpeng G7, Nio ES7, Auto M7, Avatr 07, Deepal S07, Geely L7,
the NMC or NCA might offer more range but they can only be charged up to 80% most of the time unlike LFP's which can take 100% without damaging the battery or cause thermal runaway..LFP batteries are known to last at least twice longer than NMC batteries.. LFP all the way..
This is misleading. Any type of battery chemistry (absolutely any) will degrade faster at full charge or full discharge. This is simply how they work physically and chemically. What is true is that LFP batteries degrade at a slower rate than NMC or NCA at full charge (due to lower chemical stress). But they will still benefit in longevity from being charged only up to 80%, in fact, the perfect state of any battery, is 50% charge and 50% discharge but of course this isn't practical in real life and unnecessary with LFPs because their stability also extends to cycle life and with average use they will lose 20% of their range by the time the car is falling apart (especially with proper cooling), 15-25 years after purchase.
I'm sorry but this is absolutely 100% false. ANY EV you buy you can charge to 100%. I'm on my 5th EV and they're all constantly charged at 100%. No noticeable degradation in the battery and even if there was, I couldn't care less. You bought 100% of the car so you use 100% of the car
Good for you. Since this is your 5th EV it means you don't use them long enough to notice the battery degradation before you get another one, or if you bought 5 and keeping (and using) them all, you don't use them intensive enough. More people can't afford 5 EVs. So if one can only afford one and want to use it for a long time (since it's wasteful to sell them) caring for the battery is a logical decision
The 91kWh battery is Blade Battery 2:0 with 800 volt architecture. The other two are the standard Blade Battery 1:0 with 400 volt architecture...the latter is fine for most of us.
If you can get your hands on a BYD try this out. Use 3 fingers and swipe up and down to change the temperature or swipe left and right to change the fan speed.
After testing a billion options in China, my wife and I have this model. Picked up the comfort model for 175,000RMB, so roughly £19k. Not that impressed, needed an SUV otherwise would of gone for their QIN-L DM-I saloon.
@@rupeQ2129 Sure! The ride is soft as said in the video, but the braking combined with the softness of the suspension can lead to a feeling that you are not in control, it kind of dives too much. Have had some software issues as I use the English system which I know export vehicles have but not the domestic one, so it's buggy and difficult. Several OTA upgrades have helped, but fix one issue and another appears. Perhaps the most worrying was a drive from Foshan to Shenzhen and my wife complained her seat felt hot, I pulled over and turned it off, nothing was evident to suggest the battery was causing it and after a 30-minute break we continued onwards and have had no issues like that since, but my paranoia is elevated at times.
It's better than model Y in many aspects mentioned in this review, it will do well, sales of BYD in UK are nearing a thousand units shipped every month
I agree with Peter, this REALLY has to be £5K cheaper at least before punters will have a try. They will always go with the market favourite at the same price, especially the one with the excellent charging infrastructure. The residuals if you actually purchase one will be horrendous.
They dont care for such a small market like UK/europe....... giving the tariffs imposed its not really possible to cut costs that much. We have been shafted with over priced regional cars
So it's just under 2500kgs. 0-100kmh (0-62mph) in our Seal Performance (Excellence) does it in 3.8 seconds with the same 390kw of power. Do the extra 200kgs really make it 0.8secs slower to 100kmh? It's quite a difference
Great that you talked about the battery chemistry. Not talking about that is like not talking about whether a car is a 4 cylinder diesel or a V8 petrol
10:03 a little correction: the AC's temperature and wind power can be adjusted with the jog dials on the steering wheel. The wind power can also be adjusted on the physical button around the "gear lever".
To be fair, Sealion 7 is a simplified version of the Denza N7 2024, which shares almost identical specs except for the air suspension, premium interior, 90KWh battery, and lidar based autopilot. For users who was familiar with Tesla Model Y, this car is quite soft while Model Y basically is rock solid. It's good and bad at the same time. Good thing is the driver is comfortable meanwhile the bad thing is the passenger maybe experience some car sickness.
I’ve only driven the BYD Dolphin. Not one foot driving so the regen braking is almost non-existent. IMO, electric cars should be all about one foot driving. The adaptive cruise control is immature and is very inconsistent and jittery amongst traffic and the brake modulation at stop is very grabby. But overall not a bad attempt. Not sure if the Sealion has these problems too. Need to see how other Chinese brands drive such as Geely, Nio and Li Auto. Tesla Model Y is still the benchmark that all these companies are chasing. China is definitely a powerhouse when it comes to automobile industry. Looking forward to innovations in the next decade.
S7 just launched in my country MY. After viewing it today and tested. Overall still lacking from XPeng G6 (expected). In terms of charging speed, comfort, space (G6 is slightly higher) and the best would be their UI on the touch screen. Way smoother and has ease of use. All the setting can be find within the main page or the next. BYD S7 did improved as compared to Seal but still lacking behind if you compared to G6. Plus the price for S7 is higher than G6 over here. Only plus point would be the exterior design, blade type battery and rotating screen (which i felt overated haha).
No 1 pedal drive? What EV maker does this? I’ve been driving electric for a year now and can’t go without it anymore. Seems stupid but this is a dealbreaker
BYD produces beautiful vehicles with a design that surpasses Tesla's offerings. However, the lack of a swappable battery system is a deal-breaker for me. NIO, with its battery swap technology, is my preferred choice but isn't available locally. Consequently, I'm postponing my EV purchase.
I noticed on Fifth Gear they stated a Tesla Model 3 costs &48k in pounds while in Australia they cost A$55k. You could buy one from Australia and ship one over and still be thousands ahead. Why are Tesla's so expensive in the UK.
I own an MG and have nothing against Chinese cars. Except for when I drove a BYD and they put the the indicator stalk on the right hand side which I find INCREDIBLY annoying. I'm not aware of any other modern car maker doing it and they need to clue themselves in. Also, BYD need to stop copying Tesla and put some proper physical buttons in for commonly used functions.
Top trim version is now here in Norway 4wd with absolutely everything (except winter tires and rims those are extra ) is 42K$ / 40K Euros. Pretty sweet price for the fully equipped top trim. The offer lasts until New year and deliveries are happening from december 1st. It is alot and really ALOT better equipped compared to model Y and it is superquiet in comparison. And frankly..stop reviewing the "sportiness" of these suv models. These are made for space and families and not any kind of track or sport use at all. Getting tiring seeing EV channels talk so much about sport handling on a vehicle that is lightyears from being anything sporty.
Models with number as postfix is a PHEV. Eg. Shark is BEV, Shark 6 is PHEV Similarly Sealion is BEV and Sealion 6 and 7 are PHEV. Difference in numbering probably differentiates trim level, or LHD 7 from RHD 6

I have driven this car. Brakes are very predictable. Seats are comfortable. Boot is too shallow for 2 large suitcases. 520 HP is too much for public roads when using the sport setting. 360 degree cameras are OK. Problem: expensive option is the removable towing hook - not good for a car in this class. Driving position for short people is not good. Suspension unsettled on motorway when cruising near 110kph (70mph).
1:12 You claim that the Seal U is not an electric car at all but a plug-in hybrid. That's quite a glaring mistake. The "BYD Seal U" is a fully battery-electric car with either 71.8 or 87 kWh LFP batteries. You were thinking of the "BYD Seal U DM-i", which is in fact a plug-in hybrid with a 18 kWh battery and over 1000 km of stated range. Pretty big oversight.
Elon said it himself, the biggest threat he sees is the Chinese car makers. This car is an example of what he's talking about. Feature rich, good quality and competitively priced. This car will certainly make dent in the new model Y sales when it comes in 2025.

Its not confusing once you understand the China buckets these cars as NEVs or New Energy Vehicles. The distinction is environmentally driven and segregates full petrol/diesel traditional ICE from cars that are better for the environment including hybrids. Kinda like you wouldn't say a turbo charged car is a different category from regular aspirated cars.
"The best BYD" or the best "any product" depends on each person's individual priorities, needs, values and desirability criteria. The now totally taboo BYD Seagull that sells for just $10,000 in China would be by far the most popular BYD EV worldwide if it were to be sold globally at non-hyperinflated, tariffed-to-death prices. The fact that countless media outlets described the Seagull 6-7 months ago as the EV that US/Western carmakers "most feared" simply comfirms what I've stated in this comment... Paul G

It is to see a BYD without the over the top design. Someone at BYD must have found the memo that said:”All emphasis is no emphasis” which is apparently a key design principle if you want to sell cars in the EU 🙂↔️😳. I still don’t like the marine animals link. In the back of my mind a little voice keeps saying: ‘handles like a beached whale’, which is a common description of the essential handling characteristics of people movers or seven seater vans. Why BYD? What is the brand image your naming of cars is trying to establish? This car looks really nice, inside and out. That is a big improvement but if I am hearing correctly, it prioritises ‘comfort’ over dynamics and that is usually code for the “B” word. [Boring!] and that is a pity.
Tesla state the trunk space of the model Y is 854 litres which is a ridiculously high figure that unfortunately misleads consumers who are accustomed to measurements traditionally conducted using a different methodology. Using the traditional methodology the model y trunk is 540 litres according to German motoring group ADAC. A second form of qualification is Bjorn Nyland who conducts a practical test, he demonstrates a Xpeng G6 and Ionic 5 beats the model Y. Thank you for not blindly accepting Teslas trunk spec. Here in Australia byds are a lot cheaper than Teslas although the gap is narrowing. Byd reliability is very good and voice control is excellent. Byd Adas and infotainment tech is falling behind Tesla. Byd warranty is longer. BYD have a different pricing strategy in Europe. Sales tax is lower and tariffs are non existent in Australia. Energy is free between 11-2pm and 4pence midnight to 6 am and Australian govt last week ratified V2H and V2G so discharging during peak and recharging off peak becomes a very strong motivator to own an EV for those who can charge at home. Bidirectional charging is a specification about to be on the lips of reviewers. Software defined and AI integration should also be mentioned.

The BYD owners I know just *talk* to their car to carry out ALL basic functions, like navigation. music, winding up/down windows or open/closing the sun roof or shade.
the lady voice (in English) responding to every request is amazing. Fun.❤
for anyone wondering the price , this car in china cost around 16000 pounds , so uk govt tax the hell out of this

Why don’t you move to China? Even cheaper living there. Do you want to?
I find it funny how these Tesla fanboy reviewers from the UK keep trying to talk down on Chinese cars whilst can no longer hide the elephant in the room. 10:04 In the BYD Dolphin is possible to adjust temperature and fan speed using a 3-finger multi-touch even when the AndroidAuto/Carplay layer is on top, moving up and down for temperature and left and right for fan speed. I assume this model has that feature too.
It does.
I think this is standard across all of their cars as I have driven dolphin and seal and they are both the same.
Exactly
Why would I want to give Americans or Germans my money and not the Chinese?
just because China have funded research & are miles ahead of the Americans & Germans, why should they be penalised? Germany have been ignorant thinking they'll always be #1.. not anymore.
Odd that you consider the price competitive compared to the model Y. Small difference in cost but the Tesla has better range and significantly better software and charging infrastructure. Byd might be more competitive if it was on offer at the same price as local markets.
Tesla Model Y was the 2nd best selling EV in China in 2023. It was the 2nd best selling EV in China in Aug 2024.
Actually it was the third.
For adjusting air con temp, there’s the 3-finger swipe. And if I’m not mistaken, you can use voice control for total touch-less control. One would think that a professional car reviewer would have done their homework on these things, instead of just lazily repeating this old criticism.
So impressive - I'd love to see it in Austria in mid of January.
Maybe more expensive in other service and insurance fields? Such as distribution network, I don't know, just guessing.

@@GamezGuru1 Common sense?
Same here, the new Scenic is incredible! I tried this BYD. A cheap interior, very bad in my opinion 🤷🏻♂️ Tesla is just a show off car. Well overrated.
Even compared to BYD's cheapest model Seagull, the interior of the Scenic is too simple.

My guess is; he is from India where byd sold 9 units there.
Like Model Y or Model 3? Lol
Dolphin, Sealion. Vs name like XJ, i-pace... With brand name of a cat (Jaguar). Or random numbers with letters? I mean...This is fine
The same BYD Sealion EV 7 only costs 22,000 pounds in China, tax included. Just saying, purchasing power parity
It's likely to start at under 30,000 pounds in Australia. Hooray for free trade agreements! This may well be my next car.
Can you list the things you were not impressed with. It would be great to add some detail!
@@rupeQ2129 Sure! The ride is soft as said in the video, but the braking combined with the softness of the suspension can lead to a feeling that you are not in control, it kind of dives too much. The paint quality is poor, possibly only single stage which makes sense at the price point, but the blemishes after a few weeks are unacceptable, may get the car wrapped to simply help.
My boss has the Seal, its very stylish and comfortable to be in. Very high quality I must say.
Probably worth mentioning that when you do use the brake pedal to slow down it does so mostly by using regen
I think the need to be about £5k cheaper or cheaper leasing than a model y to do well in the uk
it is much cheaper than Tesla in China, targeting family suv market, don't know how will it pricing in Europe.
Also worth mentioning that you can leave LFP at 100% charge - that adds about 10-20% to the real world range in use.
