37 litres of brutality (against "just" 27 for the Merlin). RJ Mitchell who led the Spitfire design team always said, "if it looks right, it probably is right." The Spit, still looks right - even with an engine 1.37 bigger than ever intended.
I love all these warbirds... the hurricane,spitfire,p51 mustang.... and many more. because the machines and the heroes behind the stick saved all our collective asses. if any allied veteran read this: thank you for your service.
What is such a pity is the enormous numbers of Spitfire planes that were scrapped after the war! Today, a Spitfire is worth a fortune, but cost another just to keep them flying. They are such beautiful aircraft. I am very lucky to live in the flight path area of Spitfires that fly from what was RAF Duxford, the sound of the engines in the air is a total giveaway to the Spitfire aircraft flying around doing aerobatics - simply wonderful. Frankly, they bring tears of delight to my eyes every time I see one. We owe so very much to those wonderful pilots who sacrificed so very much. A very big thank you to all the engineers that keep these wonderful machines flying for all of us to appreciate what was the most beautiful RAF aircraft.
Beautiful aircraft, 100% functionally superb, and far better than any other plane of the time. Certainly one of the most meaningful engineering masterpieces of the 20th century, and a beauty to watch in flight.
Goose bumps that sound is like a symphony and what a plane its like stepping back in time and the reason we are free today in part is due to this plane and the amazing brave men and women that flew them.

Canadians , Ozzies , Kiwis , South Africans , Yanks, Czechs , Poles , ......................AND many other nationalities to a greater or lesser extent flew with the Brits. Kudos to them all .That is why we are free democracies today. No praise is too great .
I love the Spitfires. They have always been my fantasy plane to fly. I only get to fly them in combat flight simulators, but it is better than not at all.
German and British Aircraft are so damm beautiful, lets you really imagine the technological race for air superiority. Either improve or lose the war. Marvellous machines
I think you have omitted the P51 Mustang. Surely the greatest piston engine fighter of the second world war. Mind you, only great after we put a Merlin power plant in.
@@azynkron Wrong, when the Spitfire arrived, it freed up the Hurricanes to attack the bombers whilst the Spit took on the 190's. With out the Spit, England would have been bombed into submission. And I know because my Grandfather fought in WW2 and my Grandmother raised my mother in London during the blitz.
@@BatMan-oe2gh well that's true but the hurricane is often the underdog when it comes to the battle of Britain and the overall air war in ww2. It shot down more enemy aircraft than the spitfire. I'm not saying that it's better than the spitfire (because it is isn't) but one should also give credit to the good old hurricane. Without either one the battle of Britain would have been lost.
When something looks good and sounds good, then you know it's going to be good. She is like a greyhound with wings. She stands as a testament to a courageous island nation that would never surrender in the face of tyranny. Greetings from America to our English brothers and sisters. May we always stand united for justice and liberty.
For me the Spitfire is the most beautiful aircraft ever to take flight. I must admit though as good as this sounds, the Merlin is better. I'm lucky enough to be under one of the regular flight paths for the BBMF and get to hear them on a regular basis. Even after hearing them so many times I still get goosebumps when they fly over.

There's a Griffon Spit based at east Midlands Airport near where I live and its sound is unmistakable even when far away and you first hear it. I have to stop whatever I am doing and scan the sky for it, cant bear to miss it.
Born in England and living in Canada for about 40 years I remember on remembrance day each year as a kid in the 70's watching Spitfires, Lancaster and Hurricanes doing formation fly overs on the different bases where my dad was stationed in the RAF as well as actual war vets coming into the school's to raise money with the poppy drives. It always brought a sense of pride seeing the planes that saved Britain during the darkest days and the vets who many wore the visible battle scars of war and were cheered as true heroes to look up to not the manufactured heroes today. Having read some of the comments below my personal belief is that if Hitler had not attacked Russia and lost over a million battle hardened troops and equipment things might be very different today. Actually if Hitler listened to his Generals the world would be very different but that is what makes history. Germany had a peace treaty with Russia and got oil, steel and other goods from them until Germany launched operation Barbarossa where they sent over 3 million personnel from the Axis which I believe even today was the biggest invasion force ever assembled. As much money as countries spend today on there militaries WW2 was the last war where an empire or major country could be dethroned and parceled out because today major countries don't directly fight they use proxies who they supply which feeds the war machine and its industries.
Hitler's entire strategy was always to invade the USSR for expansion of the german population, to defeat communism and to take over the resources, especially oil. He also cleaned out the socialists/communists in France and the low lands, leaving a small force for rear guard action. Taking back germany's colonies was a distant goal as well.
Very distinctive, just like the Merlin, can always tell a Spitfire without seeing it. Saw one flying over the White Cliffs a couple of weeks ago, swooping into the clouds and diving back and I didn't have my camera.
I wouldn't call the Merlin's sound sweet. It had a very distinctive exhaust note courtesy of an unusual firing order which caused early issues with the engine. I love the lazy ragged roll it gets from the rear, most classically during flybys. The Griffon has a more normal firing order and to me sounds much like all the other V12 aircraft engines in the sky. After the war, the Shackletons were Griffin powered and the crews weren't so happy about it and described it as emitting a really annoying high pitched whine ( 4 engined piston aircraft, hard to synchronize all the engines so you are going to get beating but the whine was a whole other thing) unlike the Merlin powered Lincolns and Lancasters. Trouble is, I read about the whine a while ago and now can't remember where, so I can't confirm my unreliable memory. Bob
I was born long after the second world war but whenever I hear the sound of Merlin engines in the sky, it always makes my heart race and gives me a huge feeling of an excited and profound sense of exuberance.............maybe I was once in a previous life, connected in some way to the wonderful spitfire!......
I always smurk to myself seeing these older guys flying these vintage planes when in reality, the pilots who flew them were under 25. Great plane. Love that deep throaty sound.
The older guys who are flying them are probably the same once 25 yo guys who flew them way back when!! You'll never get better than an "old" Spitty pilot.
Hats Off to the Camera Guy,, it's all out war keeping a ship in view that long and steady. But what a Ship. I've restored several WWII aircraft, but not one of these. Last one restored and flew, 1943 Staggerwing Biplane. Cheers

The two most beautiful aircraft ever made. The Spitfire and the Super Constellation.
A masterclass from pilot cameraman and Shutteworth commentator.
By far the far the most beautiful plane ever built
I like its "ugly" cousin.
This is the most beautiful airplane of the history.
I also used headphones for the best effect. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up😨 GLORIOUS TUNE !!
I love this particular spitfire variant. Just a beautiful plane.
37 litres of brutality (against "just" 27 for the Merlin).
RJ Mitchell who led the Spitfire design team always said, "if it looks right, it probably is right." The Spit, still looks right - even with an engine 1.37 bigger than ever intended.
I also love the Griffon pitch.
I love all these warbirds... the hurricane,spitfire,p51 mustang.... and many more. because the machines and the heroes behind the stick saved all our collective asses. if any allied veteran read this: thank you for your service.
In my opinion one of the most beautiful machines ever created
I agree
I hope,we always stand united together we are unbeatable
One of the greatest sounds in the history of Aviation, pure genius
Absolutely stunning in full-screen mode.
You gotta have a pair.....God bless the people that had to do this
Beautiful Spitfire, a hero among heroes.
Delano Freeberg Just perfect, in every way :-)
Almost as perfect as DH-98 ;-)
Goose bumps that sound is like a symphony and what a plane its like stepping back in time and the reason we are free today in part is due to this plane and the amazing brave men and women that flew them.
This is my favorite WW2 fighter followed by the P51 Mustang gives me chills to think about the impact this plane had on the war.
Actually the mk XVIII missed the war. It was made in 1946, but took some action in the conflicts following the WW2.
Spitfire with the Merlin had impact, the Griffon not so much, kept home after the Battle of Britain.
@@mrunning10 Kept home after the Battle of Britain? LOL. Pick up a history book.
What a beautiful design to be able to upgrade and produce to such a high level. Congratulations to the designers, manufacturers, owner and maintainers.
A great plane for sure flown by some brave Brits to keep us safe. Thumbs up from New Zealand.
Canadians , Ozzies , Kiwis , South Africans , Yanks, Czechs , Poles , ......................AND many other nationalities to a greater or lesser extent flew with the Brits. Kudos to them all .That is why we are free democracies today. No praise is too great .
Three of the top ten aces in the Battle of Britain were ANZACS
Peter Williamson The first RAF ace of WWII was a New Zealander........Cobber Kain.
ANZACS are Soldiers.
@@robhicklin2139 Two from New Zealand and one from Australia, five including the top 3 were British.
What a sound! What a machine! I got to sit in one once when it stayed overnight in our hangar. What a thrill just to sit in that legendary aircraft.
Wind-Noise with a Griffon in the background... Beautiful video, notwithstanding.
No doubt about it. The Spitfire is the most beautiful aircraft in the world!
When I see and hear these videos, my mind soars free no matter where I am and I often get the chills. Keep up the good work !
Thank you! :)
Q: "What did you do today?" A: "Oh not much. I just the Spitfire up for a quick spin..." Imagine being able to say that!
Spine tingling, I cannot begin to imagine how all these men who built this must have felt. What a remarkable plane this is
The war birds of this era are so iconic, to see them flying is amazing.
I love the Spitfires. They have always been my fantasy plane to fly. I only get to fly them in combat flight simulators, but it is better than not at all.
A real beauty together with its famous counterparts; The Zeke series, Fw190 and the F4U Corsair
German and British Aircraft are so damm beautiful, lets you really imagine the technological race for air superiority. Either improve or lose the war. Marvellous machines
Battle of Britain was won by the Hurricane, not the Spitfire.
I think you have omitted the P51 Mustang. Surely the greatest piston engine fighter of the second world war. Mind you, only great after we put a Merlin power plant in.
@@belmontbug exactly the heart of the p51 englands finest
Without either one the battle of Britain would have been lost.
god bless the British minds, love from America :)
Always liked the roar of the merlin, but its great to see a giffon doing its thing, a very nice piece of flying.
WOW!
I love watching this stuff . GOD BLESS all of you who made this possible.
Since I was 7 until today at 61 Spitfire will always intrigued me. The most beautiful fighter plane designed and the heroes that help won WW2.
Next on my 1/48 scale build list I thinks M I and M IX I thinks.
When something looks good and sounds good, then you know it's going to be good. She is like a greyhound with wings. My late, great grandfather worked on servicing and repairing these flying works of art for Vader and the like and so I have a family based love and respect for what they are and what they helped achieve.
A throwback to the days when our Ancestors deserved to be called GREAT
That's the most beautiful varient of the already insanely beautiful spitfire
It's like beauty on steroids
I m really crazy about old planes. The sound they make are music 👍
What a beauty!
That sleek profile - and the meaty Griffon engine, nearly bursting out of its casings!
You do not have to be British to love the beauty and symbolism of freedom embodied by the iconic Spitfire. Was she the best fighter of the war? Who cares! She stands as a testament to a courageous island nation that would never surrender in the face of tyranny. Greetings from America to our English brothers and sisters. May we always stand united for justice and liberty.
And that's why I loved the P-51's every year at the Reno Air Races! That sound at throttle up was shear piston power.
Not just ANY aircraft ... THE aircraft! Brings back childhood memories of Duxford in the 70's ...
Why does this bring a tear to my eye 😢
For me the Spitfire is the most beautiful aircraft ever to take flight. I must admit though as good as this sounds, the Merlin is better. I'm lucky enough to be under one of the regular flight paths for the BBMF and get to hear them on a regular basis. Even after hearing them so many times I still get goosebumps when they fly over.
Whats ur address l will be over next ☀️🌞🌝 Just as long as the UK orders ONE with my mate upstairs.
Australians ❤ our summers beaches. As 4 the Spitfire being in ❤ with them since my dad took us 2 the drive inn in 1972 l think it was ? 2 👀👀 the Battle of Britain.
As much money as countries spend today on there militaries WW2 was the last war where an empire or major country could be dethroned and parceled out because today major countries don't directly fight they use proxies who they supply which feeds the war machine and its industries.
mack Man : Very true
Hitler's entire strategy was always to invade the USSR for expansion of the german population, to defeat communism and to take over the resources, especially oil. He also cleaned out the socialists/communists in France and the low lands, leaving a small force for rear guard action. Taking back germany's colonies was a distant goal as well.
Eine wirklich Wahnsinnig elegante Maschine. Irrer Sound und ein fantastisches Flugbild
The most beautiful airplane Everton built.
Sagenhaft...auf dem Boden sieht sie aus wie ein tiefergelegter Sportwagen. Wunderschön.
Fr 😮😮😅
Very distinctive, just like the Merlin, can always tell a Spitfire without seeing it. Saw one flying over the White Cliffs a couple of weeks ago, swooping into the clouds and diving back and I didn't have my camera.
Must be one of the most beautiful machines we've ever built!
The Griffon always sounds more brutal than the sweet Merlin.
yep---Brutal was ok in War, not now though, M-E-R-L-I-N. every time.
To each their own. If I were sparring with 190's 'though, I might want the power of the RR Griffon.
its a very angry sound
it had a different cylinder firing order to the merlin. that why it sounds so different, more rough.
Bob
Nice bass sound, smooth running and 5 point prop.
What a beautiful aircraft!👍
I was born long after the second world war but whenever I hear the sound of Merlin engines in the sky, it always makes my heart race and gives me a huge feeling of an excited and profound sense of exuberance.............maybe I was once in a previous life, connected in some way to the wonderful spitfire!......
I always smurk to myself seeing these older guys flying these vintage planes when in reality, the pilots who flew them were under 25. Great plane. Love that deep throaty sound.
Dave Dennis 25, or mostly quite a bit younger ....
and your point is ?
They sure tore up a bunch of them.
The older guys who are flying them are probably the same once 25 yo guys who flew them way back when!! You'll never get better than an "old" Spitty pilot.
Hats Off to the Camera Guy,,
it's all out war keeping a ship
in view that long and steady.
But what a Ship.
I've restored several WWII aircraft,
but not one of these.
Last one restored and flew,
1943 Staggerwing Biplane.
Cheers
Thank you for your your comment! :)
Piękny w locie i na ziemi. Szacunek dla właściciela . Cudowny . Gratulacje
This brought a tear to my eye. Truly wonderful.
Beautiful machine. I imagined it flying over the POWs behind the fence telling them “you will be freed”!
