No defender of MP's but their pensions work like any other they will get 1/40, 1/50 or 1/60 of their annual salary for every year of service dependent on their contribution rate. The £150,000 figure is just made up and an MP on a salary of £91,000 at a 1/50th rate of contribution for 30 years employment would be get a nice pension of around £55,000 same as any public sector worker. I am one of them cruel people who thinks means testing the fuel allowance is obviously the right idea. But fail to understand why for the life of me they didn't delay this for a year when the pension increase happens (negating the loss) and giving the time required to at least get a high number of eligible people onto credit. My father who is now passed had a pension of around £30k plus my Mum around £7k and both full state pensions. They gave their allowance to the Trussell Trust for people who really need it. Absolute insanity that a 5th of pensioners are millionaires (assets included which doesn't mean cash rich) get £300 under the current system whilst the poorest group in society families (used to be pensioners pre Blair who lifted pensioners massively) get 0 fuel help. So the policy is not in essence 'cruel', but fair although some will fall through the net. What is cruel is bringing it in so quickly and crudely. On a side note the treasury looked at this under the Tories and it was leaked that they didn't go ahead, not because it was cruel but politically toxic as it's their demographic who would suffer exactly the same as the release of prisoners, when most pensioners are very 'tough on crime' in outlook (an ideology that hasn't worked). Labour must believe that this is the right thing to do, as it certainly ain't popular and think they have calculated, that if things get better in the country it will be forgotten by the time of the next election, a risky move, as certain we will see headlines this winter of some poor old man or woman who has died of hypothermia, images that will stick like Bojo partying whilst the Queen sits alone at her husbands funeral and are not easily forgotten. So after that waffle, I am not against the policy but the disgraceful swift implementation that gives no time for people to adjust, they say admitting mistakes in politics is suicide but most, even those who are ardently anti-Labour would respect the government if they said 'we have listened and will delay this until next year when the triple lock kicks in and we have time to get as many as we can on pension credit'. The other irony is if all eligible claimed pension credit it would wipe out any savings from the removal and could actually cost more.

Labour already knew when they did the calculations that most will not claim it because these poorest pensioners won't know they no longer receive it, or won't be able to access the forms online or get through on the phone due to a lack of civil service staff in their call centres as many of these pensioners are extremely old, infirm, don't use the internet and rely on others to care for them, including their loved ones. It's an absolute shameless raid on some of our most vulnerable people, but Labour need to free up some social housing for those that need it, don't they? I find it frankly astonishing that Labour claimed that paying the Winter Fuel Allowance would crash the economy, yet handing the train drivers a pay increase *larger* than the annual basic state pension *won't* ?? If finances were genuinely so desperate, then foreign aid should be stopped, in order to look after the senior citizens of this nation, because they've both done their bit and paid into the system. The Chinese female theatre group who are receiving a foreign aid payment, haven't paid a penny into the UK's coffers. Any government has a moral duty to look after it's own citizens, sod Chinese theatre groups, or spending £60k of taxpayer's money on private photographers just to make a certain person "look" better. Let her be judged on her actions in government, not her appearance..
Not to mention the billions going to wars abroad. There is plenty of money: labour party just sees pensioners as having outlived their usefulness. That's what's really going on here. All of this doesn’t address the fact that the UK is 15th on the list of pensions paid on the European continent. The UK pension is a miserable 38% of the European average. If the pension was decent the winter fuel payment would not be necessary.
If you get pension credit on savings but you don't get guaranteed pension credit do you get the WFA or not and as for pensions yes we work longer retire later and get a pension lower than the average of most of Europe, and as for the personal allowance of £12,500 it should be by now £20,000.

@@MrHennoGarvie1950s the best economy we've ever seen?? Britain was coming out of a war. 1970s? When people worked to a three day week and had power cuts all the time? The IMF had us over a barrell. Please don't comment unless you know what you are talking about.
@@rb1062 Power cuts are unpleasant, sure. But what would you rather have a power cut, or your own house to call a home?
@@rb1062 Alright mate, if you look at actual facts and data you will know, no matter the issues back then, they are noithing compared to the issues of today. House prices were 2.5-3x average wage, much better than today, the main metric to judge by.
Nandy gets her heating bills paid by the taxpayer.
Cant stand nandy, wigan is like a dump, she is more bothered about building houses, and we know who for, THERE ISNT A BLACK HOLE OR THEY WOULD HAVE FILLED IT INSTEAD OF SPENDING IT ON CARBON
And, what they are giving to all the illegal immigrants!
@@Judith-ii2mj People like Nasty Nandy call them the "deserving poor"
Not good enough, these are proud people. They shouldn't have to ask.
Well done Martin. Someone in the comments has made a very valid comment that" Uk pension is 38% of European average pensions and if the UK pensions were decent in the first place the winter fuel allowance might not be so crucial". People who work hard all their lives, should be able to turn the heating on without worrying that they just can't afford to do so. Also its not pensioners fault that 25% extra charge has been added to our energy bills because of the misguided concept of net zero.
Recently i was in a large Chinese city. The pollution despite all taxis and most motorbikes being electric was very bad.
Unless these types of cities are less wasteful and polluting, Millibands idea of the UK going net zero saving the climate is so delusional it is staggering.
So the extra 25% needs to be more than halved and that would save one months worth of energy in value.
All MP's get a General Election bonus of £30,000. £30,000x650 MP's will cost the British taxpayers £19,500,000 so should help keep MP's warm this winter eh?
"Warm Home Discount Scheme" £150. Why aren't we being told about this?
I suppose it doesn't help the narrative.
Or, nor, the plain GREEED of the privatised power companies....
My mother in law has just been awarded Pension Credit because I made her claim! The questions asked were ridiculous and so so long winded. What she gained in Pension credit (less than £4) she lost in Housing Benefit. In fact she believes she is now receiving.78p a week LESS, just so she could get her Winter Fuel Payment. What a total farce. Shame on labour. We will not forget!
HERE HERE Martin Lewis.
Where where? There their? It's 'hear hear' Darryn.
So giving money to the British film industry is more important than keeping pensioners warm ,just about sums up this government 👎🤡👎
I am incredulous, that was what she felt was more important than talking about winter fuel.
Film industry is one of the easiest tax write offs.
Sounds like it 😡
The pensioners keep themselves warm through their own savings.
@@jimmoynahan9910 They don't last long but pensioners have already paid their dues through National Insurance.
Thick as mince -and running our country ,imagine if the Tories had done this ? Hypocrisy at its highest.
The Tories were going to do it, it was in their manifesto, why they allowed their energy donating friends to constantly raise prices so tax payers gave their shareholders even more dividends for 14 years via the wfa is criminal..
Mice don't live in 💩💩
The Tories did do this!
And much worse!
No, they didn't. Stop lying.@@jamiewilson9280
Suzanna Reid is hysterical as the nodding dog. I think Kirsten Wiig must have used her in one of her sketches😂
How about tax relief for pensioners? Raise the threshold!
This should be implemented immediately!
100%
As a state pensioner with a good occupational pension I would have no objection to rasing the threshold as we dont need the winter fuel payment. This is not perfect but better than what they are now implementing.
@@GS-gu7nz
It would help out those of us who also worked all our lives, paid for a private pension, and now pay tax on it.
It would reduce the numbers of people who need extra help, and without all the paperwork.
Tax relief for pensioners only benefits wealthier pensioners.
Meanwhile, 1000s of migrant men invading England every week. Since 1997, over 12million immigrants have entered Britain. 80% remain dependent on Welfare. Total cost to the taxpayer is close to £500billion.
Yes it's ridiculous
Sickening and extremely sinister
Genuinely interested if there’s a source? I new there was a lot of them but I didn’t realise it was that many or it was such a substantial cost

That’s just not true every study on migration to the uk has shown that on average migrants pay in more than they take out and are a net benefit to the uk
whoever voted labour needs self reflection! What have we done!
I didn't vote labour. my family didn't. And never will vote for them . seen the Blair results and mess he made of this country.
Shame on labour. Disgusting
Dreadful, Dreadful woman, Labour OUT. Who the heck voted for them in the first place.
People that believed their lies.
Jo public.
well more people that voted for the other parties 😂 thats how it works.
Too few to give them a mandate to govern. There should be a lawful criteria regarding percentage of voters to enable this shambles of a PM and his incompetent comrades to dictate to us.
@@n2kosno, that’s not how first past the post works. Or there would be drastically different representation of party MP’s currently sitting .

Is she joking film money. And older people freezing pathetic
Nandy answered the questions, finally a government that don’t dodge the questions.
Grateful RESPECT, as ever, to Martin Lewis. Listen up Lisa!
If you know who these pensioners are ("we're sending them letters and knocking on doors"), why not just give them the payments they are entitled to?
Good point . But labour don't do obvious look at lisa nandy . 🤷🏼♀️

They dropped us in it.
I have not received a letter. I had a text informing me I had one day to sort out any assistance I might be entitled to. Labour lies and cruelty. It’s chilling … excuse the pun.
