- The advent of the jet era presented a new set of problems to the designers and manufacturers of naval aircraft. As jets needed longer runways, engineers were forced to outfit carriers with complicated and expensive systems for assisted take-off and landing. Even in the late 1950s, contemporary aircraft catapults still left much to be desired - and that’s why major powers of the world started developing VTOL tech - or aircraft with vertical take-off and landing capabilities. Two countries that achieved exceptional results in that race were the UK and the USSR, and so War Thunder features the aircraft of the Harrier family (available in the British and the American tech trees), and the Yak-38 (found in the Soviet tech tree). Today we’re going to talk about the ways you can unlock the full potential of those unique aircraft!

Harriers overheat at 100% engine thrust. Both Yak's are basically flying bricks, that yes can get to Mach 1 speed in arcade, but simply stay there with transition effect still on your screen, therefore constantly blocking your vision. Few things Gaijin forgot to mention.

There's no law saying that throttle MUST BE at 100% at all times. The 90% spot works just fine. Just pretend 90% is 100%. And 100% is actually 110%.
Yak-38 was capable only of transonic flight in reality so its correct in the game and uncorrect in the video :D
The Harrier engine overheating is an issue in the hover, not forward flight. The aircraft has an internal tank of demineralised water for cooling in the hover.
Its actually correct for the Harriers to overheat, 100% throttle and WEP were reserved for S/VTOL and emergency situations. Cruise would be under %100
The AV8 in 10.0 US ground RB is some of the most fun you can have with Zuni's, get in, dump the 16 into 3-4 ez kills, get to the nearest heli pad to re-arm and right back into the action in less than 30 seconds.

I swear yak 38 was a test to add the mig 25. Crazy acceleration, great missiles, turns like a brick. Clearly gaijin decided it was a bad idea. (I bought yak 38 and it is still close to the worst jet I have played)

Its probably the jet i got the most kills in, i have 2 gun pods plus the one under the aircraft and 2 R60s i can take down atleast 2 aircraft each match
Used the 4 SRAAMs on the GR.1 to counter all-aspect missiles found on the A-10s and the SU-25 as well as radar guided missiles, the latter being a bit more tricky. It feels awesome!😎
Indeed, same goes for the Hunter F.6 - using SRAAMs as hard-kill protection is so stupidly hilarious

I just love how the AI yak 38´s are crashing into the ground one by one after a ground attack run.

@@planeya3776 Fun Fact: As unbelieveably as it sound, americas stole the vtol design from yak 141 and applied it to F35 (not any hate towars americans, commies stole a lot of their designs too)
@@planeya3776 so what? A good portion of tech tree vehicles are experimental, and most of the premium planes on the USA tree for example are experimentals and prototypes (note the X or Y in the name, like the tank XM-1 GM/Chrysler.)

Flying harriers is some of the most fun I've had in this game. Great plane with a great gimmick.

Ahh the Harrier :) one of my favourite British planes! What it lacks in speed and manoeuvrability, it makes up for in firepower

Hmm... once on Seversk-13 I landed my GR.3 on the top of the roof of that school building (B cap in domination) and captured it. There were only 3 of my team (with me) and 5 enemy players left, so it was an already a lost game. I turned off the engine after landing to be silent, and it was so funny to watch how 4 MBTs running circles around that building, trying to figure out why they can't capture that last point.

I suppose the harrier GR.1 part must have been recorded back in 2020, as the GR.1 is no longer as lethal as it used to be, because of two infamous ground-attack aircraft
Ridiculous to me that the SRAAM was ever included on the Harrier. It never entered service with the RAF or RN. The RAF GR1 and GR3 were close support aircraft so they only rarely carried Sidewinders, payload usually being a mix of 68mm SNEB rockets, 540lb or 1000lb bombs or BL755 Cluster Bombs. God knows what that GR3 is doing in an early 2000s all black Royal Navy training finish.
Harriers are my all time favourite jet plane. The Gr. 1 was my favourite Christmas present!!
The Mirage III V would have been one of the fastest VTOLs if it was in the game
Are we ever going to see some of the newer generation VTOLs? Example: Yak-141 (for Russia), and AV-8B Harrier II (for USA and Italy)
Unfortunately yak-141 i dont think was finished i mean it flew but there was something wrong with the vtol i think

I mean the Yak-141 doesn’t exist, the actual aircraft is called the Yak-41, with the designation “Yak-141” being made up by Soviet authorities in order to register the aircraft with the FAI and for presentation at the Paris Air Show.
Then, of course, after the deal with Lockheed Martin, the Yak-41 was renamed to the Yak-141, further complicating the aircraft’s actual name.

Got some great VTOL moves in dogfights in the early times when these planes just got in the game.
Fun fact: the AV-8B, though based on the British Harrier, was a redesign developed by the USA. The British later got the Harrier 2

I was playing with the GR.1 when an enemy tried to intercept me as I was heading for the bombing bases and I pulled up hard using VTOL and managed to out turn him, get a missile off and kill him

A lot of times after I dumped all my munitions instead of flying back to base I would instead go a cap points in my Harrier
Good to see WT geting new content. sadly most players wont be able to reach that tier. I will keep playing arma and other open sandbox games rather than grinding for hours for a virtual vehicle

US, Lockheed Martin , & F-35 : We're waiting for rank 9 to come in
Lockheed are such dicks. 1991 soviet union collapses Yak, looking for replacement funding, partners with Lockheed, who then learn of the Yak-41 supersonic VTOL under development. 1992: partnership ended by Lockheed who announces the XF-35 project that just happens to be built arround the exact same powertrain as the Yak-41, but has nothing to do with it I swear, see, we spent 3 decades making it stealth, clearly not ripped off.
Wasn’t the F35Bs stovl and vtol systems developed by BAE and rolls Royce tho?
@@jamiegrant6204 Yakovlev designed (or helped design) part of the VTOL mechanism of the F-35, but other than that, the plane is pretty much pure American.
@@AUsernameWeShallMarchToKiev and I think the vtol is still different to what the Russians used. Like the f35 uses a engine powered fan for lift and the yak uses direct engine exhaust for loft
One time I was falling after having a rocket explode near me and vectored the engines to stop me right above the ocean

You fogot to mention that the Harrier Gr.7 can carry AIM-9M AAMs
So many incorrect points in this video. The harrier was designed to fly from FARPs and avoid relying on the operation of airfields as they're easy targets. Also the GR.7 was not definitive, that goes to the GR.9
Oh ya, SRAAMS that can be easily countered. Did you guys forget to mention going up against planes with all aspect missiles at all in the same BR? No, of course not.
Love the harrier, Love it in sim.. Thankyou for the less potent AAA I'm back flying my harriers. One quibble.. The lack of IFF in top tier makes it unplayable as a fighter

When I test fly the premium harriers they just do a backflip when I got vtol

I can still clap in the FGR2 but it's getting more difficult as the amount of players with gen4 grows. We needed the ADV now and not in the next patch.

You shouldn't really call the yak 38 VTOL more VSTOL. It had worse stability than harrier 1 and so they rarely used it for VTOL.

Considering the yak-38 can't use thrust vectoring in flight and that aircraft carriers are rarely present in games and almost never used when they are the Yak-38's VTOL is pretty pointless
They should add a yak-141 which is exceptionally better than the harrier and 3x better than it’s predecessor yak-38
I remember how I was trying to dogfight some one in my yak 38 it was a f100d and it was a dumb idea and he hit my tail controls and instead of ditching the aircraft I used vtol to save myself when the f100 saw that he came back to kill me but missed somehow and I used my gun to kill him when he was turning. After I used vtol to go to base.

Hey there gaijin there is a issue with the ztz 99a and that is that it is missing a ZM87 jamming system it can blind gunners and jam anti tank missile. I won't go into detail I believe you guys can research yourselves but I really hope you can add it
how do you know gaijin intentionaly favour usa only? they increased harrier gr.3 br to 10.0 while the exact same plane (they even said it in this video) the av-8 stays at 9.7

The AV-8 Family was built for ground attack while the Harriers were designed for multirole engagements, therefore the Harriers are a slight bit lighter and more maneuverable, but I agree, they should be at the same BR since the differences are so minimal (I am a harrier enjoyer myself)
I killed a mig 21 about a mountain ago in the American harrier using thrust vectoring
It could be fun to have a mach 2 vtol aircraft with magic missiles (Mirage 3 V)
Im still trying to find a source that says that was ever armed, so its kinda hard to add a completely unarmed aircraft. Just because it *can* carry something, doesn't mean it ever historically did...
