Dr Smart 007 That 1990 Final was the most shameful game Germany ever played. Everyone on that team deliberately went for the theatrics against Argentina when they didn’t have to. Never would you have seen players like Klinsmann, Völler, Augenthaler, Köhler (the last two being 6’3 or taller) dropping to the floor like flies from the slightest touch of an Argie player. Guess that was their way of frustrating Maradona & co seeing as though they were set out to be as negating as possible themselves.
Maradona played the tournament with an injured ankle n still took the team to the final. In the final match Argentine had 5 players suspended in the Germans took advantage n scored a penalty. The funny thing is despite argentina missing first team players in the final, the Germans still couldn't score from the open play. Argentina under Maradona was a team to reckon with.
So what? A goal is a goal. Argentina played brutal didn' t made anything to win the game. And they made it in the final because of two penalty shootouts
Goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea's signature game for Argentina. Already with 3 clean sheets (1 of them against Brazil!) and a penalty shootout win against Yugoslavia, Goycochea does the near impossible: beats a superior host nation team in the penalty shootout, knocking Italy out of the tournament. Clearly the best Argentina keeper until Dibu Martinez (who also had 3 clean sheets and 2 shootout wins, including the championship match)

Argentina won the 1990 World Cup. I understand they lost the final but a team with Maradona, Ruggeri, Pumpidp Olarticoechea and Burruchaga playing hurt or getting injured, Cannigia, Batista and Giusti penalized for yellow cards and Monzon and Giusti being sent off, and loose to the team that have steamrolled over everyone else by a fake penalty towards the end of the game, testifies to the greatness of the team.
I'm glad to finally see the penalties. I came home from school to remember Argentina scoring and my grandmother cheering.I had enough memory back then to know that Italy and keeper Zengha had not conceded before .Rest in Peace to the man who set up Canniggia's goal Maradona
Very painful memory for me. I was a kid and I was crazy about the Azzurri who had the best Azzurri side I have seen. I never though that Italy will go out in this game, especially when they were leading the first half. They were so strong and did not concede any goal in the previous games meeting weak Argentinian side that had organized defence plus the best player in the world Maradona, who I loved, and Canigia. This game marked the start of the penalty shoot-out curse for the Azzurri that continued for 3 World Cups in a row! Italy deserved to win this World Cup with little problems, or at least being in the final. However Maradona played his best game of the tournament on his Napoli Stadium and the Azzurri were out in a painful tragedy. This was more painful to me than loosing the final of 1994 by penalties to Brazil, because Italy had stronger side. I remember the match very well. Me and my family were with hands and shoulders for Argentina. I haven't watched too many matches with so much emotions like this one. I think that Argentina had to lost the final match because the italian mafia and some in the FIFA wanted to take revenge on Maradona and Argentina. Great Argentina with the great Diego.
I saw this game when I was like 16 yrs old :) Its been long time. It was amazing. It was one of those games where Italians came into Semis with lots of swag and they knew they will win it all. But they didn't knew what Argentina can do. They didn't capitalize on the opportunities and finally Italians came under pressure in penalty shootout. This game is classic where it shows if you don't respect those 90 mins and opportunities it goes against you. But amazing saves by both the goal-keepers.
RIP Diego. You must not forget that in the 1990 World Cup final, Maradona's ankle by then was already turned into a kind of potato. And on top of that, in the final match, the best striker Argentina had in that World Cup, Caniggia, couldn't play. And three very important midfielders could not play either: Olarticoechea, Giusti and Batista, all of them world champions of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. The three of them were the backbone of the Argentine midfield and could not play the final game due to being suspended like Caniggia. To add insult to injury, at halftime in the final match against Germany, Argentina had to replace "big-headed" Ruggeri, who was one of the best central defenders in the entire history of Argentine football along with Daniel Alberto Passarella. Ruggeri had also been world champion at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Therefore, Argentina played the entire second half without its best defender, without its three main midfielders, without its main forward, with Maradona at 40%, and several minutes with one less player as Mexican referee Codesal showed the red card to Argentine defender Monzón. With all this, Germany could only win that final match thanks to an extremely controversial penalty that the referee Codesal gave to Germany a few minutes from the end.
Really one of the best Fifa matches. I often see this match in my leisure hours in a relaxed mood. I saw this with my parents while I was a student. Now I am middle aged and still I like enjoying it.
This was technically the best Italian team. Look at the line up. They would have beaten Germany if they beat Argentina here. I think Italy lost the mind game to Maradona. He said something crazy in press conference prior to the game and I think it affected the Italians mind. Diego explained when he's about to take his penalty, Zenga tried to put preasure by saying "I know you" , but Diego responded "I know you better" Also, after scoring the opening goal, Italy seems to reluctant to attack in number. This was mindset of every team in this tournament. Defence seems to be the ultimate priority. Argentina certainly played their best football in this tournament in this particular game.
Italy were always like that. in 90s and in 2000s. lol. after taking the lead they just protected it. and Argentina were passive until they conceded one goal. only after that they started to attack. Italians weren't particularily great at that WC. they were rather lucky in some games and lackluster.
If you are gonna a tell a story, at least make an effort Before the match, Maradona pleaded with Napoli fans to show up in support of Argentina instead of the madrepatria... For this, Maradona drew immediate ire and ridicule in the Italian press and was branded a madman for contemplating let alone asking that Italians betray the Azzurri. But guess what? Come match day, a considerable number of Napoli fans showed up in Argentine shirts and throughout that legendary slugfest cheered Maradona and the men he led, devastating Azzurri's morale. So powerful was the bind of Maradona's spel!!! Of course, one should not forget the sociopolitical context of 1990 Italy and the "subtle" divide between the southern and northern regions.
One thing that isn't talked about but nicola berti was suspended for this game and he was needed. At this time he was a force of nature, incredible acceleration and covered ground like a horse. we lacked punch in the middle of the park. Giannini was already on the downturn of his career at the tender age of 26. Stefano Eranio should have been selected by Vicini as well for the squad. I also always considered Zenga to be a very overrated keeper and we'd have done better with Pagliuca starting here. Also thought Lombardo was worth a call up.
I wish I could see this match in full but can't find it anywhere. Two great footballing nations in a WC SF.. host's VS holders Maradona the greatest ever on the same pitch as the then up n coming world super star Roberto Baggio who broke the transfer fee at 8M from Fiorentina to Juventus. Maradona had nerves of steel when all of Italy including Naples who adored him for 6 years before this game all hoping and hating him and Argentina yet his winning penalty was pure class. RIP El D10S.
Caniggia wasn't even in the Final Match of the World Cup and you see here how he can make a difference if you let him . Wished he were in the Final and we could see a different outcome
This game Show that football not played by skills only .when your team face the hosted nation which great team and led 1/0 and you still draw your team and push teammates in every space on field until your team scored and won at the end you have to have strong mentality and personality so thats why Maradona was seperated from others 🌺🌺🌺🌺
Un partidazo! El Italia de 1990 era uno de los mejor equipo de la historia Italiana. Zenga ha echo el error para grabar la pelota y hemos perdido. En esa partida Baresi fue espectacular
I remember some of this from 30 years ago and the book All Played Out. Argentina were made out to be the bad guys with their dirty gritty football. But thanks for these highlights as I believe I heard that this was their best performance in the tournament and the highlights bear this out. They didn’t defend for 120 mins and they deserved to win this as much as Italy. If they could’ve put a similar performance in against the Germans we’d have had a decent final.
They did play negative throughout the tournament. It wasn't Argentina from 1986. Soviet Union outplayed them, then Brazil outplayed them, Yugoslavia were better but lost on pens. Argies basically relied on pen shootouts in knock out rounds. Overall, from how they played whole tournament they'd have been the worst winner of WC.
But then again this "bad team" had the toughest road to World Cup final ever. Even officially. The beat superb Brazil, the great Yugoslavia team, maybe the most talented Italy ever. Penalties or not, this team was mentally very strong and they just refused to lose. It was some kind of "pigheadness" fueled by Maradona. It wasn't pretty but it was a warrior team.
Thank you Fifatv! I want to watch the Extended highlights of other games from Argentina (against Yugoslavia) and Italy (against Uruguay) for the 1990 World Cup
If Caniggia played the final then Argentina would have been champions . Plus Argentina had other 2 players missing too . The penalty in the final was dubious and a dive from Voller . Unlucky Argentina . Honest assessment from German supporter .
The penalty that Germany received in the final was not a foul. However, they should have received at least 2 other clear penalties in that game. Also Germany should have scored 2-3 goals in that game from open play as well. It still sucks that the winning goal was scored from that pen
Very few people take note of the fact that 1990 tournament was the fifth consecutive World Cup in which these two teams met, quite a rare occurrence. It means they locked horns in over one third of all World Cup competitions by that time. In 3 occasions, either team ended up as the champions, and once as the runner-up. Three of those encounters between these two giants of football took place in the preliminary group stage, including strangely enough, 1986 World Cup where they played as the winners of the two previous World Cups. Another interesting fact is that neither team could take advantage of playing as the host nation. Italy won in Argentina in 1978 and was defeated at home in 1990.
Vos jugas con las "armas" q tenes Argentina aprovecho bien las suyas ademas Italia q era local no fue superior a Argentina ni cuando tubo 11 contra 10...
Italy had strong National Team in the 90s and the eliminations in 90, 94 and 98 was by penalty shootouts...in this particular game, Argentina did deserve to win because they played better (Italians has still not forgiven the coach for not letting Baggio play from the start) and if they did not have to play without 6 regular players (including Olarticoechea and Caniggia) in the final then they would have most probably won the final - in which they were denied a penalty (foul on Basualdo) and were the given one to Germany was not a penalty (Völler dives)!
@@TRaceR743 Probably but surely there are no WC-Finals won based on theatrically dives to obtain penalties like 2 times Germany that win 2 WC by cheating in this manner (1974 Holzenbein & 1990 Völler).
@@Casini1 From my point of view Italy did not play better...Italy had problems in the midfield as Ancelotti didn't recover and therefore the left defender De Agostini played half-back which was not his position and Vialli was catastrophic that game (also Giannini and Maldini didnt play well & Schillaci has stood offside almost 20 times ) while Baggio were sitting on the bench. Maradona and Caniggia that continuously exchanged their positions while Italian defenders maintain the respective position, have put them in serious difficulty by not making them understand anything. I would say that Bilardo won tactically over Vicini!
@@EVOZORE Bilardo won against Vicini tactically, but Argentina had less occasions than Italy, and made many many fouls. Goicoetchea was the man of the match.
16 years later (i.e. On this day in 2006), Italy defeated host nation (Germany) 2-0 via extra time by scoring two goals in the last minutes at Signal Iduna Park to avoid penalties and won the World Cup.
1:40 Most obvious offside goal in a World Cup semi-final. 1:42 The San Paolo explodes, yet the pretended debate of Neapolitans not supporting Italy enough is still alive today. 5:33 Giannini clearly commits a foul against Basualdo; Vautrot ignores it (just as he did during the 1.000.000 minutes he was a referi AGAINST Argentina in that Cup, even after Maradona and Caniggia were savagely beaten against Cameroon) and that allows Argentina to score crystal clear. Vautrot cannot do anything. 6:17 Debatable foul against Caniggia between Baresi and Baggio. 9:17 State of the art TV coverage for the time (14 cameras) and a ghost hits Baggio. 9:49 Strange cut. Nobody will ever understand why Giusti receives a red card. Not only Giusti is out of this match but out of the final. Other 3 things we might never know: Why did this game lasted 140 minutes? Why do we keep hearing how Argentina unfairly defeated Italy under such conditions adding that played far better than Italy? Why did the Italians consider as of today that being fairly defeated justified whistling Argentina's national anthem? Football moves in a mysterious ways...
I was watching this game when I was 18 years old, In Indonesia we saw on tv at late night a, luckly at that time was holiday school .
Who is the very powerful team

In this match, it was definitely Italy....Baggio, Maldini, Baresi etc

Football is my most favourite game,l love it very very very much,
03:01 world number 1 footballer
I wish I could see this match in full but can't find it anywhere. Two great footballing nations in a WC SF.. host's VS holders Maradona the greatest ever on the same pitch as the then up n coming world super star Roberto Baggio who broke the transfer fee at 8M from Fiorentina to Juventus. Maradona had nerves of steel when all of Italy including Naples who adored him for 6 years before this game all hoping and hating him and Argentina yet his winning penalty was pure class. RIP El D10S.
Roberto baggio...the legend❤️❤️
Oh, the match before 10 years when I was born. Love Argentine foolball from Bangladesh.🙂

Wow, Bangladesh almost love Argentina as much as we do! Saludos!
Caniggia wasn't even in the Final Match of the World Cup and you see here how he can make a difference if you let him . Wished he were in the Final and we could see a different outcome
I think Argentina were robbed
This game
Show that football not played by skills only .when your team face the hosted nation which great team and led 1/0 and you still draw your team and push teammates in every space on field until your team scored and won at the end you have to have strong mentality and personality so thats why Maradona was seperated from others 🌺🌺🌺🌺
The real football legend on planet earth is Maradona ,.The one- man team - Maradona . We will never see a player like Maradona ever , RIP champ.

It was a n incredible game for Diego RIP LEGEND
Besides Maradona they had best goal keeper , Maradona was a classic player
no me canso de ver este partido.
Deserved win for Argentina, Schilacci was in off-side on the goal
Nah, Argentina played poorly the entire tournament. Italy deserved the win, even if Schilacci was offiside.
@@Frserthegreenengine They had a great defence and a great goalkeeper.
I have seen this match when they played, first now I can see that it is clear offside, incredible no one has noticed it or talking about it woow
10:25 Maradona surrounded by almost the entire team and still makes the play
And they only showed half of it, when they start showing it he had already dribbled past 2 Italians.
8:32 Roberto Baggio already showing so much as a sub, he was going to be the tragic hero in 94
Argentina has a great goalkeeper on that day.🇦🇷🇦🇷
Notti magiche inseguendo un goal
sotto il cielo di un'estate italiana!!!
Diego the magician will ever be remembered
The greatest player ever born ..
Maradona ..
Magical
Love the video game style graphics!
yes❤️
Paolo Rossi germany would’ve won easily vs Argentina if vueller could score the crosses Brehme was serving
Four-Three
But then again this "bad team" had the toughest road to World Cup final ever.
Maradona...i miss you.1960-2020
Argentina❤❤
Rest in Peace our Hero Maradona 🙏🙏🌼🌼
Thank you Fifatv! I want to watch the Extended highlights of other games from Argentina (against Yugoslavia) and Italy (against Uruguay) for the 1990 World Cup
The people of Naples were correct! Support Italy
If Caniggia played the final then Argentina would have been champions . Plus Argentina had
other 2 players missing too . The penalty in the final was dubious and a dive from Voller . Unlucky
Argentina . Honest assessment from German supporter .
It was the most disgraceful final in the history of the game due to that dishonest penalty decision
@Alex Kanyima
Interesting facts I haven't read anywhere. Just wanted to share these facts with other viewers.
You are mistaken. Argentina WON on home soil in 1978.
I love that creative attacking play from Argentina!
Vos jugas con las "armas" q tenes Argentina aprovecho bien las suyas ademas Italia q era local no fue superior a Argentina ni cuando tubo 11 contra 10...
RIP LEGEND 🙌 🙏 😢
Italy had strong National Team in the 90s and the eliminations in 90, 94 and 98 was by penalty shootouts...in this particular game, Argentina did deserve to win because they played better (Italians has still not forgiven the coach for not letting Baggio play from the start) and if they did not have to play without 6 regular players (including Olarticoechea and Caniggia) in the final then they would have most probably won the final - in which they were denied a penalty (foul on Basualdo) and were the given one to Germany was not a penalty (Völler dives)!
I can give you a handfull of "what if" examples about the Italian national team aswell.
in this match Italy played better. Much more occasions. Argentina did many fouls and marked the gol on a goalkeeper error.
Those argentinian of that time really had balls enough👍
enough balls.
Vamos Argentina 🇦🇷🏆
R.I.P Legend.
10:23 magic ❤
Made in Argentina 🇦🇷
Maradona special 😍
16 years later (i.e. On this day in 2006), Italy defeated host nation (Germany) 2-0 via extra time by scoring two goals in the last minutes at Signal Iduna Park to avoid penalties and won the World Cup.
France not Germany
Nice semi final match of world Cup 🏆⚽🏆⚽🏆⚽
That Maradona's shot out of nowhere was pure magic.
Other 3 things we might never know:
Why did this game lasted 140 minutes?
Why do we keep hearing how Argentina unfairly defeated Italy under such conditions adding that played far better than Italy?
Why did the Italians consider as of today that being fairly defeated justified whistling Argentina's national anthem?
Football moves in a mysterious ways...
Mardona baresi baggio wow so many legends
Cry for Diego Armando
the truth is we all left him
in a prison
he was distanced
we gave him nothing
He gave us heaven

@Mario Alberto q
Maradona was skillfull, courgeous and brave player.
I was watching this game when I was 18 years old, In Indonesia we saw on tv at late night a, luckly at that time was holiday school . I did not think my favorite team Argentina and Maradona can countinue world cup until Final because their start the game terrible. But in this semifinal I saw Argentina play very relax.
Nothing can lift the morale of a Nation more than winning the WC in the greatest sport known to mankind in the world.
I still remember this match.I love youall.
This is the first time I hear commentators say "World number 1" to a football player.
RIP Maestro 🇦🇷
Word no 1. But most expensive is r baggio. He mentioned. Some thing miss matching?
What an engaging spelbinding match.
Nowadays rules and regulations, technology were ruined the prettiness of football.
