We did make a mistake here, Paul Skenes did not invent the splinker however he did discover it on his own by mistake. Jhoan Duran was the first to throw it until Skenes came up with a similar pitch. Both pitches have very similar qualities Duran's being slightly faster with a little less movement (closer to a sinker) and Skenes' being the opposite (closer to a splitter).

We've seen Strasburg, Syndergaard, deGrom, Snell, Sale, Severino, Eovaldi, etc. all ebb and flow with regards to performance and velo. Can't forget the adrenaline factor with someone so green to the atmosphere.
The most exciting thing about paul skenes for me is that his mechanics are SO good compared to a lot of the injured fireballers we've seen in the last 5-ish years. It's Verlander-esque, and I know he had TJ, but it took him a helluva lotta pitches to get that injury.
The arm side running version is almost like a 95mph screwball. Terrifying. If he can add some bite to his regular breaking ball he will be the most complete pitcher I've ever seen.
Paul left the AF Academy prior to the start of his Jr year due to the obligation to serve in the Air Force post graduation and once he knew he had a great chance of being drafted he knew he had to leave. The Air Force will generally allow members to go play professional sports but, if need be can call you back and Paul, understandably didn’t want that to happen. He’s also said he would like to serve at some point in his life.

94 with movement Is more dangerous than 100 straight. his fastball and splitter seem to both move . but you got to command it. Maddux made a career throwing 87 with movement and command
Hes had excellent command and his splinker gets like 15+ inches of drop every damn time. If he can avoid injury i think hell be alright. Edit: vertical drop, not counting the horizontal run it usuall has.
He has the mechanics of a young Nolan Ryan. Only difference this young man has control and an arsenal of different pitches. If he stays healthy he's going to be something to see. Good luck young man. ❤️⚾⚡🔥⚾
Will you please do some more nerdy/analytical baseball stats as you did in your Kyle Schwarber video? I’m a big fan of baseball, stats, and how things have changed regarding numbers. Especially OBP equaling runs
Nolan Ryan was said to have thrown 108 mph. The way they calculated speed velocity years was different than today and if Ryan was clocked using today's calculations he would be able to throw 108 mph. Bob Feller was another guy many years before Ryan and threw an astounding 104 mph ⚾⚡🔥❤️
It makes sense. Recovery is better now than it ever has been, and if you have a deep enough bullpen, why not make frequent substitutions so that all your pitchers can throw their hardest? With the relievers we see today, most starters really only have to last 50 pitches.
Mine started at 23 by 25 I was done. The pitch angle he throws it is the same angle slot I had with a power curve I threw directly at the batter. Untouchable pitch. Froze every batter that scene it. Rocket arms belong in the bullpen. To prevent injuries down the road.
For being an analytics guy, it would be nice if you took the opposite approach and used stats to show what could be concerning about Skenes. For example, he is having to throw a lot of pitches to get through 5 innings. One could argue that there are a lot of pitchers that can do this but add value by throwing 6+ innings of low ERA, low pitch count outings. Also, there are 20 or so pitchers with sub 3.0 ERAs. This guy is not Strasburg, at least not yet. Strasburg gave up 5 HRs in 12 starts his rookie year...Skenes has given up 4 in 5.

This was in a 3 piece suit on flat ground in dress shoes --- SIDE ARMED!!!! You put that man on a mound in a game, and he's touching 100. The reason the old guys, with the rare exceptional freak like Bob Feller , Sandy Koufax, and Nolan Ryan, did not go all out, is the damage and risk of injury to the throwing arm ligaments. Even if this guy Skenes throws 160 innings or less each year, the risk to his tendons with the 100+ mph heat will be the same as it was for Shohei Ohtani and Yu Darvish.
