We did make a mistake here, Paul Skenes did not invent the splinker however he did discover it on his own by mistake. Jhoan Duran was the first to throw it until Skenes came up with a similar pitch. Both pitches have very similar qualities Duran's being slightly faster with a little less movement (closer to a sinker) and Skenes' being the opposite (closer to a splitter).

He modeled it after Duran. Every guy who follows pitching closely knew about the splinker almost a full year before skenes threw it

Duran is also the all-time leader in 4SFB velo and splitter velo since PITCHf/x began tracking in '07 and over multiple seasons too. Let's tame our expectations with Skenes and his power. We've seen Strasburg, Syndergaard, deGrom, Snell, Sale, Severino, Eovaldi, etc. all ebb and flow with regards to performance and velo. Can't forget the adrenaline factor with someone so green to the atmosphere.

The most exciting thing about paul skenes for me is that his mechanics are SO good compared to a lot of the injured fireballers we've seen in the last 5-ish years. It's Verlander-esque, and I know he had TJ, but it took him a helluva lotta pitches to get that injury.

Paul left the AF Academy prior to the start of his Jr year due to the obligation to serve in the Air Force post graduation and once he knew he had a great chance of being drafted he knew he had to leave. Pretty impressive. Hope Pirates win a championship with him. I love their stadium and their fans deserve a championship. They have a number of years to build a team around him. We've seen this story before. Throwing consistently 100+ mph isn't good for anyone's arm. He's not superman. I thought what they said about Strasburg was BS and he'd be fine. Break all the records he wants, but it's going to shorten his MLB career. Hope his arm doesn't wear out by 2030. He'll then become a free agent and get his payday. For being an analytics guy, it would be nice if you took the opposite approach and used stats to show what could be concerning about Skenes. For example, he is having to throw a lot of pitches to get through 5 innings. One could argue that there are a lot of pitchers that can do this but add value by throwing 6+ innings of low ERA, low pitch count outings. Also, there are 20 or so pitchers with sub 3.0 ERAs. This guy is not Strasburg, at least not yet. Strasburg gave up 5 HRs in 12 starts his rookie year...Skenes has given up 4 in 5.

Who here wants to bet on the amount of time Paul Skenes remains healthy? I'm betting he tears his ligaments within 1-2 years of this.
There was a reason that the old pitchers from the 1990's and before chose NOT to throw 98 MPH or more. Oh, they had the ability, but they knew better. PROOF: In 1920 or so, an "over the hill" Walter Johnson threw into an army shell speed contraption at 84 MPH. The speed was taken and averaged 55+ feet from the release point, so his speed measured today by radar would be closer to 94 MPH. This was in a 3 piece suit on flat ground in dress shoes --- SIDE ARMED!!!! You put that man on a mound in a game, and he's touching 100.
The reason the old guys, with the rare exceptional freak like Bob Feller , Sandy Koufax, and Nolan Ryan, did not go all out, is the damage and risk of injury to the throwing arm ligaments.
Even if this guy Skenes throws 160 innings or less each year, the risk to his tendons with the 100+ mph heat will be the same as it was for Shohei Ohtani and Yu Darvish. Ohtani is on his 2nd or 3rd arm operation and can't pitch.... and he was throwing it 102 also.
Ohtani's ligaments only stood up to 3 years of this, and less than 500 IP consecutive, after arm operations.
To get away with throwing that hard often, you must be either a tall freak like Randy Johnson at 6-10, or have massively flexible and iron-strong joints. I wish the guy the best, but I don't see this lasting long.

I hope I'm wrong, but it looks like his arm does most of the work in pitching, so I'd guess he's headed for an early Tommy John.
