Top things I wish people would know about Tourette: 1 - It's extremely difficult to control it (and you can only do so for some time), so it's not a a matter of will, 2 - you don't have curse to have it, 3 - it's a neurological problem and not a psycological one. So you don't get it because you have problems in life.
Coprolalia, could be additional when it comes to Tourettes 10-20% of the people with Tourettes have it. Coprolalia basically means a reparative use of obscene language. as a symptom of mental illness or organic brain disease. And “ You dont have to curse to have it “ doesn’t necessarily make sense either... so.
When you're a teenager, Tourettes Syndrome is much worse. I have Tourettes Syndrome and deal with it on a daily basis and as a teenager, it's so much worse. It starts to calm down once you've reached full adulthood after puberty which is what I've heard. I'm very surprised she's able to keep it in most of time especially since she's only seventeen. Regardless, I'm very proud that she's dealing with it so well.
I have Tourette's, and if anything, it's gotten worse as I've become an adult. I'm 22 now and it seems worse now than it was when I was a teenager. A lot of factors can contribute to ticing more or less, so its hard to say since Tourette's is SO different person to person.
Thank you Billie for being so open about Tourette’s. It definitely isn’t easy to deal with, but I feel so much better knowing someone who I look up to deals with it too ❤️
My little brother who is now 31, has lived with tourettes syndrome since he was first grade when he was diagnosed. Its inspiring to hear famous people come out with their struggles. It shows us that they aren't perfect and that we all have issues we struggle with
I'm glad Billie opened up about her Tourette's, it's really cool. My brother has Tourette's and it's been a big challenge in his life, so it's really inspiring to see what she has accomplished in spite of TS and at the same time she is raising awareness! Lots of people still don't know or understand what Tourette's is.
its like that little intimate moment that the producers of this channel should have kept a TV moment for the watches and not upload it to youtube. shame on the ellen channel for NOT listening to their guest. its not awareness on this platform its broadcasting
Most of the comments are saying that, when Billie says “your eyes are so beautiful”, it’s a tic, but IT’S NOT A TIC. She doesn’t have verbal tics or something about her voice or stuff like that, she has tics about her face and her. She said that because she is just kind and one of the cutest person in the world.
She does have verbal tics to be diagnosed with Tourette’s you have to have 2 motor tics and one verbal tic. In one interview she say that she has this tic where she would hum that she wish doesn’t become a tic. She just hides her verbal tics.
@@cartierkoo5974 she never said she did, she does have verbal tics if you look at the doc on Apple TV and also in a interview she said that she was scared because she noticed that she was doing a humming tic.
So glad people are talking about this. I have tourettes syndrome and the first thing people say when I tell them is: ‘Oh, so you like, curse?’. There needs to be more awareness
Your Name™ - The girl Ellen is interviewing is apparently the ‘new name’ in pop music- Billie Ellish..she was suddenly popping up in interviews.. I don’t follow pop so had to look her up.
Do you have any vocal tics? If not, then you likely just have tic disorder. TS is categorized by the presence of both motor and vocal tics. My son has TS and his tics range from throat clearing, humming, squealing etc and stuff like eye rolls, neck cracking, nose scrunching and various other movements.
Dana Say I think one needs at least one vocal tic to be considered having the syndrome, but the motor tics are usually more prevalent and severe. (I’ve been diagnosed since 7 (soon 34 now))
This makes me feel so good. I have loved Billie for so long, and when I found out she had tourettes, I was so surprised because I have tourettes. Knowing I'm not the only person who has it! She makes me feel inspired! I love u Billie!!!!
**this was copied from a medical site (i think) to help others understand billie's condition(s), or if you have tourettes syndrome, you could find some answers to your questions* tourette's syndrome is a condition that causes a person to make involuntary sounds and movements called tics. it usually starts during childhood, but the tics and other symptoms usually improve after several years and sometimes go away completely. there's no cure for tourette's syndrome, but treatment can help manage symptoms. people with tourette's syndrome may also have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or learning difficulties. symptoms of tourette's tics are the main symptom of tourette's syndrome. they usually appear in childhood between the age of 5 and 9. people with tourette's syndrome might have both physical and vocal tics. examples of physical tics: blinking eye rolling grimacing shoulder shrugging jerking of the head or other limbs jumping twirling touching objects and other people examples of vocal tics: grunting throat clearing whistling coughing tongue clicking animal sounds saying random words and phrases repeating a sound, word or phrase swearing swearing is rare and affects only about 1 in 10 people with tourette's syndrome. tics aren't usually harmful to a person's overall health, but physical tics, such as jerking of the head, can be painful. tics can be worse on some days than others. they may be worse during periods of: stress anxiety tiredness people with tourette's syndrome can have behavioural problems, such as: antisocial behaviour flying into sudden rages inappropriate behaviour children with tourette's syndrome may be at risk of bullying because their tics might single them out. premonitory sensations most people with tourette's syndrome experience a strong urge before a tic, which has been compared to the feeling you get before needing to itch or sneeze. these feelings are known as premonitory sensations. premonitory sensations are only relieved after the tic has been carried out. examples of premonitory sensations include: a burning feeling in the eyes before blinking a dry or sore throat before grunting an itchy joint or muscle before jerking controlling tics some people can control their tics for a short while in certain social situations, like in a classroom. It requires concentration, but gets easier with practise. controlling tics can be tiring. a person may have a sudden release of tics after a day trying to control them, like after returning home from school. tics may be less noticeable during activities involving a high level of concentration, such as reading an interesting book or playing sports. when to get medical advice you should contact your GP if you or your child start having tics. many children have tics for several months before growing out of them, so a tic doesn't necessarily mean your child has tourette's syndrome. diagnosing tourette's there's no single test for tourette's syndrome. tests and scans, such as an MRI, may be used to rule out other conditions. you can be diagnosed with tourette's syndrome if you've had several tics for at least a year. getting a firm diagnosis can help you and others understand your problems better, and help you access the right kind of treatment and support. to get a diagnosis, your GP may refer you to different specialists, such as a neurologist (a brain and nervous system specialist). treating tourette's there's no cure for tourette's syndrome and most children with tics don't need treatment for them. in some cases, treatment may be recommended to help you control your tics. treatment, usually available on the NHS, can involve: behavioural therapy medication behavioural therapy behavioural therapy is usually provided by a psychologist or a specially trained therapist. two types of behavioural therapy have been shown to reduce tics. habit reversal training this approach involves working out the feelings that trigger tics. the next stage is to find an alternative, less noticeable way of relieving the urge to tic. exposure with response prevention (ERP) this method trains you to better control your urge to tic. techniques are used to recreate the urge to tic to train you to tolerate the feeling, without doing the tic, until the urge passes. medication some people's tics are helped with medicines, but this is usually only recommended if the tics are more severe or affecting daily activities. medicines for tourette's syndrome can have side effects and they won't work for everyone. causes of tourette's the cause of tourette's syndrome is unknown. It's thought to be linked to a part of the brain that helps regulate body movements. for unknown reasons, boys are more likely to be affected by tourette's syndrome than girls.
Yesss I've had to live with similar motor tics my entire life and to hear someone so clearly and bodly come out and say it like "yeah and?" is so powerful. I've been ridiculed my entire life (even by family before my diagnosis) and it's led into my adult life manifesting in ways I'd never have imagined. Billie if you're out there reading RUclips comments I wanted to say THANK YOU for being unapologetically yourself!

1 - It's extremely difficult to control it (and you can only do so for some time), so it's not a a matter of will,
2 - you don't have curse to have it,
3 - it's a neurological problem and not a psycological one. So you don't get it because you have problems in life.
Coprolalia, could be additional when it comes to Tourettes 10-20% of the people with Tourettes have it. Coprolalia basically means a reparative use of obscene language. as a symptom of mental illness or organic brain disease. And “ You dont have to curse to have it “ doesn’t necessarily make sense either... so.
I have Tourettes and here is my experience:
You can control it but you need training and therapy

When you're a teenager, Tourettes Syndrome is much worse. I have Tourettes Syndrome and deal with it on a daily basis and as a teenager, it's so much worse. It starts to calm down once you've reached full adulthood after puberty which is what I've heard. I'm very surprised she's able to keep it in most of time especially since she's only seventeen. Regardless, I'm very proud that she's dealing with it so well.
It does calm down quite a bit after puberty. My son has Tourette's.
I have Tourette's, and if anything, it's gotten worse as I've become an adult. I'm 22 now and it seems worse now than it was when I was a teenager. A lot of factors can contribute to ticing more or less, so its hard to say since Tourette's is SO different person to person.
I don’t technically have Tourette’s I’ve got a chronic motor tic disorder (so pretty similar) and as I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten worse.
Everleade same here. Except, I’m almost 40.
Hers are only physical tics like muscle movements not verbal ones. And she can control them

I have a form of tourettes (motor ticks) and seeing someone I admire speaking so openly about it gives me hope.
(I’ve been diagnosed since 7 (soon 34 now))
She only has physical tics like muscle movements, not verbal ones
This makes me feel so good. I have loved Billie for so long, and when I found out she had tourettes, I was so surprised because I have tourettes. Knowing I'm not the only person who has it! She makes me feel inspired! I love u Billie!!!!
one thing i love about billie is that she always appreciate other people's which melts my heart.she is a really nice person and a good Human being ❤❤❤
**this was copied from a medical site (i think) to help others understand billie's condition(s), or if you have tourettes syndrome, you could find some answers to your questions*
tourette's syndrome is a condition that causes a person to make involuntary sounds and movements called tics.
it usually starts during childhood, but the tics and other symptoms usually improve after several years and sometimes go away completely.
there's no cure for tourette's syndrome, but treatment can help manage symptoms.
people with tourette's syndrome may also have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or learning difficulties.
symptoms of tourette's
tics are the main symptom of tourette's syndrome. they usually appear in childhood between the age of 5 and 9.
people with tourette's syndrome might have both physical and vocal tics.
examples of physical tics:
blinking
eye rolling
grimacing
shoulder shrugging
jerking of the head or other limbs
jumping
twirling
touching objects and other people
examples of vocal tics:
grunting
throat clearing
whistling
coughing
tongue clicking
animal sounds
saying random words and phrases
repeating a sound, word or phrase
swearing
swearing is rare and affects only about 1 in 10 people with tourette's syndrome.
tics aren't usually harmful to a person's overall health, but physical tics, such as jerking of the head, can be painful.
tics can be worse on some days than others.
they may be worse during periods of:
stress
anxiety
tiredness
people with tourette's syndrome can have behavioural problems, such as:
antisocial behaviour
flying into sudden rages
inappropriate behaviour
children with tourette's syndrome may be at risk of bullying because their tics might single them out.
premonitory sensations
most people with tourette's syndrome experience a strong urge before a tic, which has been compared to the feeling you get before needing to itch or sneeze.
these feelings are known as premonitory sensations. premonitory sensations are only relieved after the tic has been carried out.
examples of premonitory sensations include:
a burning feeling in the eyes before blinking
a dry or sore throat before grunting
an itchy joint or muscle before jerking
controlling tics
some people can control their tics for a short while in certain social situations, like in a classroom. It requires concentration, but gets easier with practise.
controlling tics can be tiring. a person may have a sudden release of tics after a day trying to control them, like after returning home from school.
tics may be less noticeable during activities involving a high level of concentration, such as reading an interesting book or playing sports.
when to get medical advice
you should contact your GP if you or your child start having tics.
many children have tics for several months before growing out of them, so a tic doesn't necessarily mean your child has tourette's syndrome.
diagnosing tourette's
there's no single test for tourette's syndrome. tests and scans, such as an MRI, may be used to rule out other conditions.
you can be diagnosed with tourette's syndrome if you've had several tics for at least a year.
getting a firm diagnosis can help you and others understand your problems better, and help you access the right kind of treatment and support.
to get a diagnosis, your GP may refer you to different specialists, such as a neurologist (a brain and nervous system specialist).
treating tourette's
there's no cure for tourette's syndrome and most children with tics don't need treatment for them.
in some cases, treatment may be recommended to help you control your tics.
treatment, usually available on the NHS, can involve:
behavioural therapy
medication
behavioural therapy
behavioural therapy is usually provided by a psychologist or a specially trained therapist.
two types of behavioural therapy have been shown to reduce tics.
habit reversal training
this approach involves working out the feelings that trigger tics. the next stage is to find an alternative, less noticeable way of relieving the urge to tic.
exposure with response prevention (ERP)
this method trains you to better control your urge to tic. techniques are used to recreate the urge to tic to train you to tolerate the feeling, without doing the tic, until the urge passes.
medication
some people's tics are helped with medicines, but this is usually only recommended if the tics are more severe or affecting daily activities.
medicines for tourette's syndrome can have side effects and they won't work for everyone.
causes of tourette's
the cause of tourette's syndrome is unknown. It's thought to be linked to a part of the brain that helps regulate body movements.
for unknown reasons, boys are more likely to be affected by tourette's syndrome than girls.
Thanks for this!
Thank u for this information!
