What's really amazing about Wemby's block is that he does not try to do flash block which sends the ball to either opp or crowed. His blocks are either coming directly to him (by snatching) or toward his teammates. Smart BBIQ and efficiency.

@@JaydosCommentshe makes sure that when he blocks the ball he can generate offense off of it and keep possession of the ball instead of knocking it into the stand because the opposing team will still get the ball again if that happens.
His mother (former BB player and actual coach) decided he would play soccer as a goalkeeper when he was younger so he reads the ball trajectory very well and both arms are fast and accurate. It helps a lot now : he makes a lot of blocks and most of it aren't given back to the other team, whether he keeps the rock or deflects it towards a teammate. If you make 5 blocks but the other team have 4 second possibilities, it's useless. The number is important, the quality is even better.

As a diehard Spurs fan for over 2 decades it's weird seeing the league recognize one of our players. I'm used to them lurking in the standings and all media keeping quiet about them or barely mentioning them in the national spotlight.
Now we have Wemby and a new team that won't be denied recognition its gonna take some getting used to but as I've been saying all my life:

the more Victor plays the more he seems to realize he doesn't really need to jump to block most shots and by standing his ground he can recover much faster, foul less and control the blocked shot.

Look at how smart he is.. he always makes sure that the ball still on the court and in his teammates's hands when he blocks someone That's crazy !! He also is way less jumpy, getting more active hands and understands way better the game.. He is gonna get better and better and I truly hope he'll be the next DPOY ! It looks like he's adapting to the high-arching shots players started taking to get around Wemby's height. He's playing very smart and getting better at the game fast

And this is like half of his defensive plays. The other half is the fact that players would stop shooting when he's around and would kick the ball out to the perimeter.

He was the best, most impactful defensive player in the league from the first minute of his first game in the league. The voters just didn't know what to make of him...

A lot of wemby blocks is when he's not even at the rim. Cause when he's at the rim players don't even attempt a layup.
That’s a good point. It seems that it would create lack of confidence within 8 feet of the rim. Unless someone can create like Kyrie or can just body him out of the way, it would be difficult to want to attempt a shot near the basket.

While his size definitely gives him a big advantage he still has to read plays, quick on his feet and get physical.
And much much better than other 7ft5" players that have passed on the league with any success, as you told it's all in how good he use his body

the hip flexibility is incredible. Elastic strength coupled with insane length makes him a nightmare on a BB court, nobody comes even remotely close.
And it is only the top of the iceberg, there is so many action that were modified just by his presence on the court...trying to avoid a block...

2023-2025 DPOY... They gave it to Gobert in '24 because his team played better team defense and the Spurs were a bottom 2 defensive team w/o Wemby on the court.
I thought it was a Defensive PLAYER of the Year award... not Defensive TEAM of the Year award. Gobert aint even CLOSE to Wemby defensively. Not just blocked shots, altered or just shots that weren't even taken because the person Wemby was guarding just passed it.

This is why I say KD is the best ROLE player of all time. His role is scoring. But he has never reached his defensive potential ever. Look at Wemby using his height to easily get blocks or defer the other players. KD could easily do it but we let him slide.
