Jerry West is a treasure. he holds so much respect, you can tell by how quiet everybody becomes when he talks.
When nobody puts you in the Goat conversation but for the last 30 years or so you are the NBA logo?

His starting 5 was the best because he picked Stockton and Chamberlain. Both statistical monsters. Looked up Magic v Stockton and similar stats except Stockton has 2-3 less TOs a game and creates 1-2 more TOs for his team. Statistically Stockton was better at both ends.
Shaq, Kenny, and Chuck during this draft is a perfect example of what the tnt crew would look like without Ernie. So much chaos and no direction lol

Met Jerry West 10 years ago when he was in vacation in Italy, asked him for a picture and told him that he was my father's favorite player. He brushed it off and said he wasn't even the best player in his team. Then he told me and my brother stories about Elgin Baylor and Wilt for 10 minutes.
I coudn't believe the humbleness and the kindness.
One of the very best players ever, and one of the very best GMs ever. And an even better human being.

Another two stories from the same trip i forgot, he told me he visited the Colosseum every time he visited Italy because Gladiator was one of his favorite movies 🤣
And he told us to enjoy every single win in life, small or big, be proud of everything you accomplish, because he was so obsessed with winning that losing haunted him, he said he was always thinking about his losses and it didn't let him enjoy life fully.

On Wilt: he said that in all his years he had never seen a better athlete than Wilt. He said that he is the strongest player in any era and that no one could match up with him physically. He said that only Bill Russell could get in Wilt's head to take him out of the game.
On Elgin Baylor: he said that Elgin was one of the purest scores ever. He compared him to George Gervin and KD, but that he played with intensity and fire like Kobe. He said that if you disrespected Elgin he would drop 50 on your head (his words).
He said that if you gave Elgin what these players have today (trainers, nutritionists, chefs and shot gurus) he would have scored at least 40 a game.
And then he just left, i had like 50 Kobe questions that i'll never get to ask.
But he is the coolest.
Jerry West - no words can describe this gentleman. His knowledge, insight of the new and the old, and his genuine respect and love for the game.

@@hopegaming867 well he did disrespect several players, for example did say cousy was the snack guy on their team, and just old respect of calling him Jerry instead of Mr.West, did seem to annoy him.
Everything he touches turns to gold. Trace his career in the front office from Los Angeles, to Memphis, to the LA Clippers, to the Golden State Warriors. Aside from the Lakers, every team he went to struggled amidst mediocrity and worse. When he arrived they immediately turned themselves into teams that could go deep in the playoffs and /or contend and win championships. His eye for talent and team assembly is second to none. Probably the greatest all time tbh

Jerry West almost won the contest just by himself. He didn’t even need to consult stats or study hard for it, his sense for talent and team building is just amazing.
Or that he's literally personally seen all eras play. He knows who's best.
He would of won if everyone got one wildcard each so no advantage given as west would of picked the needed bench player. His starting 5 is ridiculous btw.
And thats even after originally wanting to pick all Lakers players, the kobe second overall is otherwise awful.

Jerry West, the logo, is the living bridge across the life of the NBA. He either saw, played with or drafted most of the 75 players on this list. What a treasure.
Watched Mikan as a kid, played against all others 50s and 60s player, most of the 70s and watched all other ones grew up as a GM and most important person in basketball history

I know that essentially this is just a mock draft, but drafting against Jerry West must have been so intimidating. He has played with, played against, or evaluated every single NBA player of the last 60+ years. His knowledge is insane.

George Mikan was the first true superstar in the NBA. He also fundamentally changed the game with his play. His drills are still practiced everywhere to this day. The 50s/60s players really don't get the respect they deserved, they played when the rules for offensive players were very strict and you had to play smart to succeed.
@Tong Zou Yeah, that was ridiculous. I was constantly saying when are they going to pick Barry and Hondo? I was super surprised that Jerry West took Carmelo before either one of them, but I guess he knew people would overlook them late. Both Havlicek and Barry are in my top 25 of all time, btw (especially if you consider Barry's ABA career as well).

i don't like seperating white and black when it comes to ball - if you cold you cold. but in a game dominated by brothas jerry west and larry legend were some baaad dudes. even uncle shay shay names larry bird as his all-time favourite athlete. thats how you know that man got ice in his veins fr. what mr west did as a GM is unbelievable. mans was a visionary and put some of the greatest ball we've ever seen on display in the purple and gold.

Klay is overrated. Look at the numbers. I understand the argument that his ppg is lower due to the teams he played on, but his rebs and asts are pretty low for a Top 75 player of all time. I'm just not sure he's Top 75.

His knowledge of the league is in clear display here and hopefully per his request, in the top 80 players anniversary, they can include those wild cards for each panelist.

Can we all just appreciate Ernie's knowledge of all of the picks? After every pick he's rattling off all their stats and accolades. He probably has notes and maybe they've all been collected for him but the amount of research needed to do the deep dives of every single freaking player and not make a mistake is just outstanding.

You know he acquired Worthy, Divac, Kobe, Shaq, and made other Laker great moves. You might not know that he also made great moves for Memphis later and for the Warriors. Klay was his choice.
He also got them pau gasol! Plus, he helped build my warriors big 3 and helped get kd, AND THEN he said, "I've gotten the Lakers to chips on and off the floor, why not do it with the clippers?" And then he went up and scooped kawhi and Paul George. He also drafted Shai gilgeous Alexander too.

He got BOTH of the Gasol brothers! That’s crazy he simultaneously got the lakers a ring and got Memphis Marc Gasol who became maybe there best players ever. The poetry of that is amazing cuz that’s his former team, he traded brothers for eachother, who are arguably #1,#2 players in franchise history, AND he drafted Kobe and got him another ring without even being in the building still. Now that’s a win-win. We would all love to have a friend or business partner like that

For all you Draymond Green haters, Jerry West paid him the ultimate compliment by saying he would have chosen Draymond as his wild card choice if a wild card was still available.
As a dubs fan, i miss Jerry. Drafting Klay and Draymond, and just his presence in the building were massive in building a culture and a place people want to be. He played arguably the biggest role in turning the team around, i was confused and angry that we let him walk.
