The words of David Smith’s father have stayed with me for years and years, asking if she at least was holding on to the car bumper because no parent would let someone take their kids and leave them without a fight. He was right on the money.

Totally agree! She wasn't bruised either and you would think, even if it was a long shot, that she'd have tried to have forced herself into the car or hold onto it to stop it which would have given her bruises and probably cuts too. She obviously had been in no fight for her kids.

I didn’t know that until Susan Smith. I was in elementary school and this case was always on the news.

I believe when this happened, you were even able to drop babies and very young kids at police stations, hospitals and fire stations - no questions asked. It's utilized more than people believe. A local woman drove to the ER I was working at at the time and simply told the receptionist she didn't want her baby. Given how fresh (just a few hours old) that the baby boy was, we asked the mom if we could check her out to make sure she was alright. You could tell she was in a lot of pain and exhausted. Asked if we could give post birth care instructions and even supplies if she needed them. She didn't want that kind of help and left. No other questions asked.
Baby John Doe was taken to the nursery, totally healthy and did fine. When he was old enough for the state to take custody, he was taken in by them. At least he had a chance at life thanks to his birth mother. I pray he got a wonderful forever home!
Stories like this where a parent kills their own kids...for any reason but especially to spite the other parent or "have a better life" without kids is so sick. Children are not pawns.

Never knew her name. Guessed her approximate age. Don't know where she was from. In David Smith's book he says how what sealed his mind, beyond any doubt, that Susan meant for the kids to drown is when they found the car the emergency lights were still on meaning she could see it when it was sinking in the water and made no attempt to run after it as she wasn't even wet when she ran to the neighbors house. I never believed her "botched suicide" story. If you really wanted to save them, even if you couldn't see the car, you'd at least jump into the water and try as hard as you could to find the car and get them out. So wicked. Even if she didn't want the kids, she didn't have to drown them. They could have stayed with their dad and been perfectly happy.

In his words, which I absolutely love, "You can't take a real mother's kids"without a fight. My kids are teenagers now, but if anyone even thought of doing something when they were babies (and even now - both are on the autism spectrum and my younger son has terminal cancer) You would find chunks of the guy under my fingernails. And those chunks would be the only part of him the police would find. After seeing a talk show that focused on a "mother" who saw her husband molesting her own daughter and walked away, my son asked me what I would do. He asked if I would call the cops. I said "no." We have a justice system, but it is very flawed. The creep would get a fair trial, and the jury would have sympathy because his grandma didn't bake him enough cookies when he was a kid. Susan claimed that she tried to get the car back when she realized that she didn't take Michael and Alex out of the car as it sunk in but the car got away from her. Bullshit.
I do remember at least one person saying that they didn't like the Prosecution implying that Susan could have gotten the car out of the lake on her own. They pointed out that it was DARK when Susan allowed the car to roll into John D Lake and she was alone, so even if she had a change of heart and regretted letting her innocent babies roll helplessly into the lake, no way would she have been able to get the car back in the dark and alone.

I now live in the state this took place, and I still consider this the coldest, most horrible crime that happened here. I’m a mom of a 3-year old, and Michael and Alex would have been close to my age.
I couldn’t imagine how scared Michael and Alex were. Imagine being strapped in your car seat, doors locked, windows closed not being able to get out of the car and then not being able to swim at all, and being in the dark. Basically having every obstacle blocking you with no chance of escape, rescue, or survival. This monster should never be released.

I am so sick of child killers putting the blame on their childhood for their actions. “I was molested, I was abandoned, I was physically abused, I had several step parents, we moved a lot, my parents committed suicide, my parents never loved me, and I didn’t had the greatest childhood.” Susan Smith will officially go on as one of the most hated not only women, but as one of the most hated mothers in the USA along with Casey Anthony. Susan was a heartless, selfish, lying, cheating, narcissistic psychopath. She cheated on David with several men including a wealthy man who doesn’t want to be with her and doesn’t want children. Susan hated being a mother and she hates living in a middle class family. She had a breakdown and she drove her car along with her sons to the lake where they drowned and she puts the blame on a black man. She’s now in prison and I hope that she never gets out when she is eligible for parole in 2024.

Like I said the parole board looks at the nature and seriousness of the crime committed and her behavior the entire time behind bars before making their decisions to grant parole or not to grant parole. Knowing all they know about her time behind bars and her killing a toddler and a baby. They will never ever release her into FREE society. Her one and only way out of prison is if she has a deadly condition and has a few days or a few hours to live while on her death bed. Nothing else. Even that they still might let her die at the women's prison hospital. She's doomed. A serial or mass killer of adults has a better chance of parole than child killers.

This is a heartbreaking case. I understand that being a mother can be hard at times, especially with postpartum/depression. Those are serious illnesses that need to be properly treated. I also understand that a horrible childhood can damage a person, both physically and mentally, especially if there are things left unhandled. However, I'm also aware of the fact that there are plenty of mothers who go through severe depression/postpartum who would never inflict any kind of pain on their child(ren) whatsoever. There are also plenty of people who had seriously horrible childhoods who were able to recover and become happy, prosperous and successful adults.
Also, I can't post this without mentioning the racism in Susan's story. It wasn't random. She told the police the “kidnapper” was a black man because she thought they would be more likely to believe her, implying that a black man would be more likely to commit the crime than anyone else, even though, in reality, it was a white woman. People really need to stop associating crime with people of color. It is highly offensive and unbearably painful.
The truth is that Susan Smith stood there for six minutes, watching her helpless children become submerged in a lake and drown. The fear the children felt must've been unimaginable. I'm sure they were screaming and crying out for Susan and David. To me, there's nothing that justifies forcing your children to go through any part of that.
Lastly, I feel terrible for her family, especially David. He believed her, supported her and stood by her, and then she exposed her lies and confessed that she murdered their babies. I cannot imagine the excruciating pain and betrayal he must have felt.
Overall, Susan Smith received the punishment she deserved, in my opinion, because, like her own attorney said, she will have to think about it and live with it for the rest of her life.
To Michael and Alexander: May they rest peacefully and painlessly in Heaven with God, surrounded by more love and joy than anyone could ever imagine.
    God bless you all.

I'll never understand how she didn't get the death penalty. How was it a "botched suicide attempt" when she intentionally put on the emergency brake to save herself only, but then intentionally took it back off a few seconds later to murder the kids?? Sounds to me like a perfectly executed plan of action to murder the kids and save herself in the process.

So many other options 🤦‍♀️. Her ex would have taken them. Grandparents probably would have taken them. No, she chose to kill them. So sick of these so called parents killing their own because they either want a fresh start or because the person they're interested in doesn't want kids. How about putting your children first? Like a parent is supposed to do. My daughter will always come before me and anybody else. Especially when it comes to her life. These people are not parents. They shouldn't have kids to begin with.

The children always come first before the men as the men come and go while the children love you forever. After all, I am a proud mother of one and a loving grandma of 2. I will never understand Susan Smith who tried to commit suicide and ended up killing her totally innocent boys who loved her and depended on her. Her snobby rich ex boyfriend Tom Findlay did not want her beautiful boys and did not love her, either. If he really loved her, he would have welcomed her boys with open arms. Obviously, Susan was totally unstable and not fit to be a mother. I am sure David would be more than willing to take their boys.

They argued that her life was hard? Okay... I'm missing memory from the age of 8 years old past that time. Literally only a few minor memories. My mother was a opioid addict, and my father was a no show. I treat my two young kids to express their emotions, to talk to myself and their dad. They trust us completely.
Just because you had a rough past, that doesn't define you. Just like the lady said in the video: "any mother who could drown her babies, there ain't nothing to her". And she's beyond correct. Mental health is of essence. But to use your past as an excuse to murder your babies? You're not a mother. You're a monster. The fact that she could get out of prison in two years... It's sickening.

The key word is "was" even while he was "begging" for the safe return of Shannan, Bella and Celeste. In my opinion Court TV reporter Ashleigh Banfield hit the nail on the head when she described Chris as a "lying cheating horror show." While a lot of people believed that Chris should have received the Death Penalty; it was the decision of Shannan's parents Sandra and Frank Rzucek Senior to spare Chris' life via a plea bargain. That and the fact that the court system of Colorado seldom if ever pursued the Death Penalty against criminal defendants.
