It's not broken. It's working exactly the way 'they' wanted to work. They are making lots of money. As George Carlin said it's a big club and you and I are not in it.
And one of the biggest things that produces these bad incentives is plurality voting. It leads to a 2 party system because it penalizes people for trying to compete with one of the 2 parties.

@@joshwells4280 The American middle class is shrinking. This trend has been observed over several decades, particularly from 1971 to 2023. The share of Americans living in middle-class households has decreased significantly during this period. In 1971, approximately 61% of Americans were classified as living in middle-class households. By 2023, this figure had fallen to about 51%. This decline indicates that a smaller proportion of the population is now part of what is traditionally considered the middle class.
With term limits once elected the politician will have no reason work for the voters and will work only for the political contributors. Term limits is a terrible idea EXCEPT for the Supreme Court.
@Ponyjon This is a ridiculous take. Without term limits, politicians have a whole career, years and year of working with lobbyists, and corporate interests to enrich themselves under the guise of working for the people. A politicians goal should not be to enrich themselves but to assist in the betterment of their community and government. This is why the post should be temporary, so we do not become subserviant to one persons ideals.
The reason we're so broken is that we've allowed the govenment to ignore all the laws the Constitution had in place to prevent this level of incompetence and corruption. It's not a Left/Right thing.

The health care “system” is broken because it’s not a system, it’s a business. And a business doesn’t get ahead by getting rid of customers. Customers being healthy are customers that aren’t coming back in on a regular basis. In their mind, that’s not care. Care is a continuous process. That’s why curing a customer is bad and “symptom management “ is good. Continuous customers mean continuous profit. Health care will never be fixed.
This is why they want to put everyone on lifelong pharmaceuticals. Imagine being literally dependent for your survival on antidepressants. Drug factory goes CA-CHING
No one is suppressing cures..cures make money . 80 percent of health care cost is driven by lifestyle related illness. America is exceedingly unhealthy by every metric and a majority is our self chosen lifestyle not “big fill in the blank”. We just love blaming “systems “ in this country vs any personal introspection
It absolutely could be fixed if we finally implemented M4A in this country and took the profit incentive away and if more people actually supported and voted for progressives then we would have a much better chance of that.
No one's trying to "control" you. 🤣 But the corporate oligarchy IS trying to squeeze you and take your money. The whole "control" bit that you've misinterpreted is simply corporations telling obvious lies and the average, stupid citizen believing said lies. Nothing to do with control. Everything to do with exploiting and perpetuating stupidity.
Just to make a point: we don't have a chronic disease epidemic because our healthcare system is so expensive. We have a chronic disease epidemic because people eat garbage food, drink sugar water on a daily basis, drink too much, don't exercise enough and spend most of their day sedentary. The chronic diseases come along with our state of being, which has been building since post Kennedy era. You want the best chance to avoid the doctor and everything that goes with it? Eat better, only drink occasionally in moderation and get.. In... Shape. Take responsibility for your own health...
Most of the public isn’t smart enough to educate themselves on proper diet and take the time to do it. It’s easier to grab fast food and junk food and spend loads of time looking at tiktok and garbage tv shows. At lunchtime yesterday while fueling my auto at Maverik I watched a 20 year old girl, rolls of fat all around her torso go into store and come out with large soda and big bag of chips. Lunch.
No, it's true you guys are on average very unhealthy, for a bunch of reasons, but that doesn't excuse the costs of your healthcare system. And also one reason you're unhealthy is that so many of you are poor: poor people eat crap because it's cheaper. That part applies across the rich world - eating fast food, drinking cheap sodas and sitting around watching TV as you get obese are consolations/distractions the poor can afford more easily than eating wholefoods and employing a personal trainer. And you have more and worse poverty: these figures are from 2018 but approximately right still: "the top 1% in Europe take 12% of income (in the US, 20%) while the bottom 50% have 22% (in the US, 10%)" Poverty is bad for your health; income inequality like this is really bad for a nation's health.

Because of, location, location, location. High demand for the price of the land built on, and don't forget property taxes that have to be paid on the land and apartment building while the local government that collects those property taxes would never take less than they can squeeze out of the owner to help keep rents down. And because of @JustMeeZZ comment below, "Because at least one person is willing to pay that."
It's not justify. It's called supply and demand. Also the owner of the property has insane overhead. Remember. When you pay rent you are paying the owners mortgage AND taxes WITH profit.
I have been screaming this for YEARS and nobody listens. Nothing gets fixed because those in power have no reason to fix it - it’s working exactly how they want it to work. They privatize the gains and socialize the losses, all while convincing people it’s poor immigrants that’s causing their problems rather than the rich.
Hypernormalisation-The societal phenomenon in which people recognize that a system-whether economic, political, or otherwise-is failing but continues to act as if it’s functional.
My first date in 1977, took the girl to a sit down dinner in a real restaurant, and two ticket to a movie, plus filled up my dad's VW bug on fumes, with change back from a $20.
How much you could buy with $20 back then isn't relevant. The relevant question is what percentage of your income this $20 bill was. If you were making $100 a week at the time it would have been 20% of your income. And then the question should be whether you can still do all the things you mention on 20% of your weekly income. If yes, then you're better off. If no, you are doing financially worse.
I work at sea. I spend 6-8 months out here. My food is covered, I have my own room, internet, no commute to my job, only bills I pay are car insurance and phone. I make about 10 grand a month after taxes. Now I work extremely hard out here with zero days off. And what to do when our contracts are finished is an ever present thought with all of us out here. I have very different plans with what I do with my hard earned cash than most of the rest of my coworkers. Returning to the United States is not one of them. Even though my life out here is essentially free, I work way too hard to waste what I make out here on bullsh*t in the US that breaks, doesn’t work, poisons me, etc. That seems like a monumental waste of my time and money. I take my hard earned funds to parts of the world where it goes much farther. Like how my grandfathers’ money would have gone in their time. I choose to spend my off time in places where I feel like life rewards me for my hard work rather than burning me every single step I take back on shore. Do I still love America? Yeah, that’s hard to shake. Do I think it’s far too broken to live in anymore? Absolutely. I refuse to do so. I love the folks I work with out here. Amazing people. I feel bad for those who must return.
You forgot to mention taxes where only 20-50% actually get used to benefit Americans. We have enough money to retire in numerous countries, but living in America is draining our finances so we continue to be wage slaves. We would leave but it’s difficult when you have children

Because the 2 party system has a monopoly in this country, virtually any politician seeking office has to pledge allegiance, not to their country, but to their party, without whose support they can never get elected. This is the reason very little ever gets done - because the priorities of those in government are not with the people of this country, but the people of their party, instead. I GUARANTEE you, though they’d never admit it, every single Democrat in Washington would rather see Trump fail, to the detriment of the entire nation, than succeed, if it would increase their chances of reclaiming the White House in the next election. And the Republicans are no better - they would do the exact same thing.
Underrated comment. The 2 party system actually behaves more like a joint monopoly that few seem interested in pointing out. It lends itself to having so many votes not matter in the outcome, while big spending gets more results instead. So the system is corrupt and doesn't incentivise politicians to solve the problems, because they need to dangle them for the next election. Somehow so many still feel that if we just get the right guy (whether that's Trump or defeating Trump) that it ignores that a bad system will produce bad results. Even if you feel a current leader is a magical unicorn fixing everything, all it takes is someone else to undo it. And yet more and more people are sick of having just 2 parties and want more options. Most newer democracies intentionally set up their voting system to encourage a multi party proportional representation. That hadn't been invented when the founders wrote the constitution so they just copied the plurality system the British were using.
Political rivalries have been around since the beginning of our country, but since the 90s, both parties began to understand that weaponizing issues, instead of solving them will get you re-elected.
A local politician (state senate) told us exactly that. He would prefer a more moderate stance per his constituents, but the PARTY says vote with us or no more election funds. He's a Democrat. He lost last year by less than a hundred votes.
@kendallsmith1458 look up a book called The Politics Industry, there's more infuriating examples of this crap. Sometimes local or state politicians who sincerely wanted to work out a deal to avoid a legislative crisis, had to meet in secret for fear of being primaried.
Have enjoyed watching your show for years, but as a Canadian, will be investing my entertainment time on offerings from countries that share our values. Time for Americans to take collective responsibility for the direction you have chosen.

The Dylan song today most evokes for me is "A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall." Oh, what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son? Oh, what’ll you do now, my darling young one? I’m a-goin’ back out ‘fore the rain starts a-fallin’ I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest Where the people are many and their hands are all empty Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison Where the executioner’s face is always well-hidden Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten Where black is the color, where none is the number And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’ But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’ And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

ADHD was definitely around in the 60s and 70s. They just didnt have a name for it and just beat their kids or sent the kids to boarding or military schools. My grandparents told me all about it
Exactly. All for a joke, Bill equates ignorance of a thing or people suffering in silence with it not existing or being a problem, respectively. I’m growing tired of his self-congratulatory schtick, myself.
“Here’s my room where I keep my special plates and and collection of decorative spoons - DON’T TOUCH THEM!!! They are for looking only!” Not a sign of ADHD or autism to be found! 🙄 Simpler times, I guess
When I was in elementary school, sure there were some hyper kids, but we all walked to school, we had a long recess in a big city park, and we had a lot of freedom to go to the library and read whatever interested us, or do crafts or whatever else worked for us. Now my kids are in school and all they do is study the same boring stuff over and over again because the teachers only teach to standardized tests. And there's no recess to speak of and nobody walks to school - even though the school is in a city just like mine was. So sure, ADHD might not be an entirely new condition, but it being a giant problem in school - yes, that's something we created.
Spoiler alert: even a centrist position will be dismissed by both sides because one side will claim it’s socialism and the other will claim it doesn’t go far enough.
That sounds more like America's Center Democrats and Bernie- Left. The GOP position these days is radical right-wing. They have some centrists but they get hamstrug with threats. Republicans used to be able to work with Democrats. They were reduced to a trickle with McCain, Romney, Murkowsky and a few others but they are easily overwhelmed by the Magas, After Reagan they took an ideological turn and defend their Party religiously.
Everyone's always making fun of centrism, but no one ever makes a good argument against it. Like hey, some old ideas are stupid let's get rid of them. But also, some new ideas are really stupid, let's get rid of them.
Because most people are not actually centrist. They still want things to change so are by definition progressive, or they don't want things to change which makes them by definition conservative. Centrism isn't a political position so much as an aggregate result. What you describe is how most people who identify as left-wing tend to think, and how most people are right-wing but who aren't "alt" tend to think. And they are progressives and conservatives, not centrists. People instead use centrism as a form of virtue signaling, describing themselves as centrist to appeal to some sense of rational balance, when no such rationality actually exists. They blindly adhere to the platitude that the truth must lie in the middle, irrespective of how much worse one set of arguments is compared to the other. As if centrism is merely the result of not being an extremist, rather than a really complex and narrowly defined position. THAT is why people make fun of centrism.
Here's one problem: "Centrism" is a lable like conservative or liberal. There are definitions but generelly they're used so wishy washy that it allows everyone to identify with whatever lable feels right to them independent of what the reality looks like. example1) In polls you regularly find massive support for the left wing Bernie Sander's policies, but many people identify as conservative anyway. example 2) You can support a genocide in Palestine, push more war, be anti immigration, anti worker etc and still call yourself a centirst. Frankly it doesnt matter what "you" think centrist ideas are when the reality is different. Let's say polling shows most people support medicare for all and only fringes want something more to the left or right of that. Wouldnt that mean that Medicare for all is the centrist position while the alternatives are potentially extremist fringe positions? OR is centrism somewhere between the Dems and Rep policies? In terms of healthcare that would be a compromise of Obamacare and nothing?
@ This is the simple problem of centrists: you can't be centrist on a single policy. You either want it to change which is progressive, or you don't, which is conservative. You're absolutely on point about the labelling, what people do is "I don't want it to change as much as some progressives, so instead of calling myself progressive, I call myself centrist." It's about tribalism, not realism.
@@Melesniannon yeah, you can absolutelly be a centrist on a single policy, no open borders no closed borders just normal regulated immigration. see, very simple.

Today (in Australia), is the 1st of February. On the 1st of February 1984, so 41 years ago, we got free healthcare in Australia. I’m 50 so I’ve had free healthcare for 40 years of my life. Free healthcare has never seemed so far away and such a ridiculous pipe dream in America than it ever has in my lifetime. We thought Obama might pull it off but it was too little too late and now that’s unraveling faster than your democracy and economy.
I always tell people (regardless of their political views) this when we get a newly elected leader in the USA and they tell me that they are going to fix all our problems. I had to remind them that we were promised a national healthcare system when Obama was in office. Instead we got a broken system that lines up the pockets of the healthcare providers.
Is it "free"? Somebody is paying the bills. Maybe that's why no one can afford a house in Australia. Every country has issues that is caused by their policies.
Of course it’s not free. It’s a National Insurance Scheme. We pay our Medicare levy every year on our tax return. Average 2% of your taxable income. Every taxpayer. In a financial year I may not go to a doctor at all, sometimes when you’re young and fit healthy, it might be years. Some years might be 10 times. Might fall off a waterfall and break my leg. But in those years my money spent I did not get back it paid for someone who did need it. But I show my Medicare card at the Doctors and haven’t paid for a visit for as long as I can remember. If prescriptions are involved sometimes we pay, but I take a photo of the receipt with the Medicare App basically, and it’s back in my account within 3 days. And when I did get my money’s worth someone else didn’t use their Medicare levy that year. Government caps costs too. I saw one person crying to Biden thanking him for reducing his daughter’s monthly insulin costs. I looked up what it would be here and even after Biden reduced it cost by 50%, it was still three times higher than what it costs here. And Trump overturned that deal already anyway. We can afford houses and groceries more than Americans can by the way. Home ownership 70% vs 63% in America. We live longer, have better health. On the World HDI (Human Development Index), we’re 10th America is 20th.
ruclips.net/video/ylsO0VVy29U/видео.htmlsi=CEiDjJLxIWpKmohh From 10 years ago… the 1.5% taxable income Medicare Levy is 2% now on average but otherwise, accurate. Digital access a lot easier now. We have one central App, MyGov. Health, Tax, Social Security, they’re all linked on the one App now.

“Broken” sounds like this all happened because of neglect and incompetence. The systems he mentioned have been painstakingly designed to be exactly what they are today. The labour has been steady and relentless for decades. From telling everyone that their “happiness” has to come before all else (especially having a family or dedicating yourself to that family), they made people selfish and high maintenance and divorce is like the first resort instead of the last and they all justify it by convincing themselves the kids will be better off if the parents are “happy”, which is a moving target they never achieve. Entities have been horning in on the healthcare system to extract a cut between the source and the service to the point that it costs 10x more than it should now. Office workers outnumber medical staff in American hospitals. There are more admin than doctors and nurses combined. And they all make as much or more than nurses and some make much more than doctors. None of them actually add value to the system. They just carve out these little places where they can snatch some of the money before it gets to the point of service. The same thing has happened in education. More office staff than teachers. @@francoisvanwyk5355 the boomer complaint about how no one in the 60s and 70s had problems like divorce or mental health issues is so simplistic. We have a broken food system, HC, etc. If you get cancer, you go to USA if you can afford it. we have the best outcomes on all types of cancer (learned this when my wife got cancer here in TX at only 35 years old). We met people from South America, Middle East, Asia, etc who came to the Start Center (I've heard there are even more foreigners in Houston at MD Anderson which is one you likely have heard of). The problem is the broken incentives in food production, chronic care management, over-medication, etc, etc.
You're right, the truth is that the rest of the world free rides on health technology that the US develops. It would be a mistake to remove the profit motive completely from health care - but we DO need to fix it so there's a functioning market with (as you said) properly aligned incentives.

Term Limits, Lobbying Limits. Without these two things, there is literally no hope.

Americans don't generally listen to basic medical advice.
This is why they want to put everyone on lifelong pharmaceuticals. Imagine being literally dependent for your survival on antidepressants. Drug factory goes CA-CHING

Do you really not get it, Bill?
If everything's always on the brink of destruction, all the time, we are that much easier to control.

Bill does get that. Why do you think he doesn't?
Exactly
No one's trying to "control" you. 🤣 But the corporate oligarchy IS trying to squeeze you and take your money. The whole "control" bit that you've misinterpreted is simply corporations telling obvious lies and the average, stupid citizen believing said lies. Nothing to do with control. Everything to do with exploiting and perpetuating stupidity.
Indeed. It's the endless "crisis of the now."
Victim blaming much? It’s my right to eat a dumpster’s worth of food and receive quality healthcare. Literally shaking right now!! 😂
Lunch.
That's why they hate RFK Jr. for exposing the chronic disease epidemic they help created with their friends in big Pharma.
We have a chronic disease problem not because it's so expensive. We have a chronic disease problem because it's so profitable.

Because of, location, location, location. True back in high school $10 of gas would last a week. You could also afford take out and a weekend out
How much you could buy with $20 back then isn't relevant. The relevant question is what percentage of your income this $20 bill was. If you were making $100 a week at the time it would have been 20% of your income. And then the question should be whether you can still do all the things you mention on 20% of your weekly income. @MARS1111 you must be fun at parties.
Let people enjoy things.
Basically what Kato did to* Caesar in Rome

I remember the word 'hyper' being used for certain kids back in those days.
So sure, ADHD might not be an entirely new condition, but it being a giant problem in school - yes, that's something we created.
Spoiler alert: even a centrist position will be dismissed by both sides because one side will claim it’s socialism and the other will claim it doesn’t go far enough.
Nope. The other side will claim it's fascist...and they are.
Thank you! I thought that when Kennedy was running.
Well, one side thinks men can get pregnant and believes lopping off children's private parts is "medical care"
That sounds more like America's Center Democrats and Bernie- Left.
The GOP position these days is radical right-wing.
They have some centrists but they get hamstrug with threats.
Republicans used to be able to work with Democrats.
They were reduced to a trickle with McCain, Romney, Murkowsky and a few others but they are easily overwhelmed by the Magas,
After Reagan they took an ideological turn and defend their Party religiously.
Is it a centralist position if you’re already framing it from the left?
Mediocre moderates broke this country, it takes someone on the extremes to fix it.
@ This is the simple problem of centrists: you can't be centrist on a single policy. You either want it to change which is progressive, or you don't, which is conservative.

More consultants and middle managers than actual faculty. Costs keep rising while outcomes keep dropping.
None of this is by accident. It’s not “broken”. It’s just inhumane.
That first paragraph is exactly what many in this country don’t see or understand. It’s by design to fail. An Agency created to regulate labor, natural resources, or monopoly and corrupting, it assigned to someone who comes from these same sections their supposed to oversee. Do you think their not going to damage and chip away at these agencies?
