This is probably the best RUclips video about this moment because of how you explained such a controversial call in such a neutral manner. It helps this young Sabres fan who wasn’t even alive when this happened to get a better understanding of this hockey monstrosity. Nice video!
As a Stars fan who watched this play out live, it drives me crazy when this is explained and the ‘attacking player w/possession addendum’ isn’t discussed. Very well done here indeed!

Except it is wrong. Kicking the puck does not transfer possession. Written rule in the NHL. Hull never had possession of the puck until we shot it in the net. So he was in the crease twice while not having active possession by NHL rules. His foot was in the crease twice before he had possession and finally shot the puck in. The video is great, but the explanation of the rule at the end is inherently false based on the rules at the time. Kicking a puck does not count as possession.
As an avid Stars fan who lived this....a very well-done, even-handed and comprehensive video. I had never seen the video before, of Stars players reacting to the Edmonton goal. One thing I would add. The March 1999 memo clarifying the crease rule was due to an embarrassing play that had been ruled illegal. On the play a player skates in on a breakaway at a sharp angle. He skates directly through the crease with the puck entirely in his control, a fabulous moving pulling the goalie away, opening up a giant yawning open net and slotting it upstairs for a spectacular goal. But....his skate was in the crease when he shot it. The puck was outside. It was absurd to not count this goal, but the rule was clear and offered no interpretation. That's why the league sent the memo out. It was rare to change a rule in the middle of the season but this goal made it's absurdity obvious. Had that goal not occurred Hull's goal is probably disallowed.

The 90s Sabres jersey was one of the best, along with the circa '97-'04 Pittsburgh Panthers football jersey and the mid to late 90s Villanova basketball jersey.
@@ObscuraDeCapra Dallas’ current look is one of the best in the league. What they moved on to after that big star look (too busy for my taste, also reminds me too much of those silly Flying V sweaters) now those were uninspired, rote, awful looking.
I found this channel about a 1/3 of the way through last season and I fell Inlove. Best hockey RUclipsr by FAR. The presentation and knowledge is absolutely top notch.
If I may add some of the story… I was a reporter at the (infamous) 1999 Draft in Boston. On the day of the draft, I found Scotty Bowman (then coach of my Red Wings) just standing alone, so I approached him - and we had about a 20 min one-on-one. He told me that the GMs had a conference call earlier that morning (which I believe was just a few days after ‘the goal’) where it was explained to him and the others on the call that a worker at the Aud opened the gates for the media to come on the ice just 8 seconds after the goal was scored, and that played a big part in why the refs refused to do a review of the goal, and that the league did apologize to the Sabres. Also, evidently Lindy Ruff practically kicked in the refs dressing room door trying to get them to review the goal. One more interesting point: it was widely reported - and is still lore - that Derian Hatcher of that 1999 Stars team was the first American-born captain to lead his team to the Cup. This is only partially true. While in the NHL era, starting in 1917, Hatcher is indeed the first. However, in 1915, the Vancouver Millionaires won the Cup (still the city’s only Cup win) and the team was led by Si Griffis, their Captain who was raised in Rat Portage, Ontario… but he was actually born in Onaga, Kansas, making him the first US-born Captain of a Cup winning team. (FWIW, I wrote to the HHOF about this several times with no response)
sabres fans still haven't recovered from this moment. controversy is unfortunate but man it cements plays like this in a different sort of way. just like how flames fans have never recovered from that 2004 scf game 6 "no goal"
And they shouldn't. I remember watching it live with my friend and we were super entertained... we were like "oh this is crazy! they are going to have to bring the teams back out!"... in my mind there is definitely an asterisk next to that cup. The only time (at least in my lifetime) I think of a Stanley Cup as being stolen.
@@cassiusdhami9215 But that one does not have a conclusive replay. Before you respond google the parallax effect. I think it was in too but the replay is not 100% conclusive.
Think it they disallowed it at 3 am on a dumb rule like the skate in the crease….This is probably one of those plays that would have been controversial either way.
Fun fact for any gamers: Brett Hull's "foot in the crease" goal was scored on the same day that the very first version of Counter-Strike was publicly released.
It's been 25 years. I still remember being in this dingy little dining hall/bar of my friend's church watching the game. I still remember my friend and I shouting "NHL '99!" at the TV whenever Buffalo had a scoring chance because my friend said he just got it on the Playstation right before Buffalo got one of their goals. I still remember my dad and I listening to the game on the radio as we drove back home between OT1 and OT2. I still remember standing in my family living room, pointing to the TV and saying "He was in the crease." as my dad flopped back into his chair. I still remember the confusion in my mind when I flopped into bed about 30 minutes later. I thought I was over it all. Then I remembered.
I get it, but the rule change exempted the goal from being disallowed anyway. They literally got it right and people still act like the league fucked them. I can't understand that. I can understand the Calgary Flames 2004 goal that is nearly impossible to say definitively if it's a goal because of how close it is. That leaves interpretation up to whoever you ask. I personally don't think it's conclusive, but I could see why someone might think it is. With this goal, the rule was changed and Hull had possession the entire time. The league literally got the call correct, regardless of what Ruff or Sabres players think.
That 2004 Flames vs Bolts goal is a good goal because the league had a better viewing angle than the fans and broadcast. Our view a gave us the illusion that it didn't cross the goal line when, in fact, it did. @@adamg7984
The Eagle vs The Dominator, I think it was Scotty Bowman that said the only reason it's called the Stanley Cup is because calling it the "We have a better goalie than you" cup would take to long. That goal divided classrooms, fights would break out at recess and teachers would argue with students for a year or 2 over that one.
Took a visit to the hockey hall of fame earlier this summer. They had a large video board playing a clip from a documentary about the No Goal. Suddenly, a random dude walked past the board and yelled "No goal, you cheaters!". Being from Buffalo, it made my day and stung a little. Thanks for making a great video on the topic!

Sabres fan here, I was 8 years old when this series took place, all I remember is the beginning of game 1. The most heartbreaking Sabres loss in my life is game 7 of the '06 Eastern Conference Finals. My eyes welled up the next morning
Same man about those 06 Sabres. That was the best Sabres team we ever had. Remember Tim Connolly in the playoffs that year before the Sens took him out? Then in the ECF, 4 out of 6 of our starting defense all hurt. Losing Tallinder was so bad because him and Lydman were playing so shut down. Then losing Jay Mckee after that was the worst though. That was our year and we win in 6 if they dont all get hurt in that series.
@@quentincampbell612 Sabres the next year had a better record and went deep into the playoffs as well, but they didnt have the speed and grit like the 06 Sabres. 06 Sabres had a perfect balance of speed, skill, and grit.
Was furious when I watched this live. Was equally ticked off when the very next year, John LeClair shot a goal through the outside of the net against the Sabres in the finals which the NHL didn't notice until ESPN kept showing replays of the shot. By that time, play had resumed so the goal stood.
I watched this game live on TV when I was in high school. I wanted the Stars to win largely because of Modano and Hull, but always though that while "conceptually" the Hull goal was OK, it was still outside of the letter of the law and thus shouldn't have stood. I'm pretty sure I never heard about the NHL memo from earlier that season, even in subsequent years, but after reading it, the league's "halfass" justification doesn't look so bad, anymore. In fact, that little skate-kick to his own stick by Hull does justify "possession" of the puck, and according to the NHL memo, it's a good goal. I know that isn't going to matter to Sabres fans, but I feel like there is finally some clarity about that series now that I've seen the actual wording of the pre-playoffs memo.
Speaking as a Sabres fan, while this was brutal most Sabres fans see the '05-'06 elimination as more painful. The best team in the league that only lost because every defenseman got hurt and they were using numbers 7,8,9 and 10 on the depth chart. The '98-'99 team holds a special place but nothing close to '05-'06.
Hardcore Dallas fan here. As an 11-year old watching this happen live, I'll never forget the moment Brett Hull was interviewed and the reporter told him of the controversy about the gwg. Brett Hull's words, "Well aren't you a joy kill." Never forgot that moment.
Nah, the new foot in the crease is the phantom goalie interference calls when a puck goes in nine seconds after a goalie whacks a skater in the shins with his stick.
lol. Weak, incorrect take. There's nothing wrong with enforcing offside. It's against the rules. Do you wanna just get rid of all video review? Go watch House of Cards or Game of Thrones or some other childish nonsense if you don't care about the integrity of sports.
I relate it more to the "distinct kicking motions" that seem to go 50/50 either way, as they're both more directly related to a goal. Although, when it comes to the nitpickiest of "I think the tag on his jersey is still on the line before the puck" type nitpicking, the foot in the crease is up there.
@@joshuaneal7552lol he's right. When a player has his skate in the o-zone by an inch and is not even involved in the play that's actually the exact same level of nonsense rule!
@@tomblade If you're in ahead of the play, you're in ahead of the play. How do you _actually_ measure offside? How many inches (how many millimeters) is no longer "close enough"? A rule like offside SHOULD not and CANNOT be subjective. The crease rule WAS dumb. Offside is NOT. Are you for getting rid of offside? If so, then your argument is understandable. But if you agree with keeping offside a rule, then you can't be all "close enough" about it. It's no different than "everyone's a winner." A rule is a rule. While the crease rule was dumb, at the time, it should have been enforced as is. However, I've heard the explanation that Hull had control, then stepped out, kept possesion, then stepped back in, and that the league had already sent a memo clarifying that that was within the rules, so it looks like a good goal to me. I've defended Hull on this for a quarter century. If the league was being dishonest to protect itself, then that sucks. If they were being accurate and truthful, then that's good. I just want to see a fair game. In my opinion, winning unfairly is a far worse feeling than losing fairly, as the game itself is bigger than anyone else.
Man I don’t know how you found the footage at 11:23 but that is awesome. I wish the NHL still caught the emotion like this. It’s also rich that the Stars owner wanted to get rid of the rule… and in the end, it won his franchise a cup lol
There was a playoff game from a season prior where PJ Axellson on the Bruins had a game winning goal disallowed due to the foot in the crease rule, and the Bruins would later lose the game. I've been looking for footage of that no-goal for like 20 years.
I’m pulling for Buffalo to have a good year this year. It’s been far too long since this upset and they were such a fun team to watch growing up. I remember I commented something about being disappointed as a Canucks/jets fan, but Sabres fans arguably have it worse lol 😊
Jere Lehtinen is the most underrated player of all time and it's not even close. Scored the first goal of the game on a shot Hasek would stop 999/1000 times, then got the puck on goal for an A on Hulls OT winner. Won multiple Selkes as a winger. Yet you will barely hear him mentioned once, including this video. You wont see him in the highlite pacjage lifting the cup, or doing intervuews after the game etc Lehtinen was the clutch player, and both times Hull scored here, Lehtinen was the name you hear before he scores.
It's so wild that the league didn't make that memo tweaking the rule public... What is the possible rationale to not letting the fans know when any rule has been tweaked, let alone the most controversial rule? There still would have been arguments around whether or not kicking the puck up to the stick should count as 'possession', but it wouldn't have been nearly as controversial as it was if everybody including the announcers had been aware of that memo.
Betman is famous for the private in house rule changes he keeps under his hat for when a controversy happens and suddenly "oh we had a memo about that back in march", he's done this about half a dozen times in his almost 40 years as commissioner. no one really buys it, i mean it sounds good in the press but when the NHL GMs don't know about the rule change is it really a rule change? it's mostly about backdating a memo so you don't have egg on your face.
Great video. Sabres fan are haunted by this moment. Along with when Lucic blasted Ryan Miller (too lazy to fact check it); further destroying the team lol. I’m not a fan of either team in this video but I’d have been pissed if they disallowed the goal. You do an excellent job describing every aspect of what happened in your videos. Providing why moments were significant and going through the rules at the time helps place the viewer in the shoes of that time period.

I was born in Buffalo, and honestly the feeling of hopelessness at the time was palpable. Both the major teams, the Bills and Sabres, got so close to getting over the hump and winning the city a victory in sports. Only to watch the Four Falls with the Bills and then watch the Sabres get back to the finals after 24 years, and lose it thanks to a rule that'd later be changed. Not to mention that a year later began the Flutie Curse. Being a Buffalo fan is pain.

I have wondered about this goal since it happened! Thank you for taking the time to explain about the rule update that, unfortunately, nobody knew about.
Yup, I followed hockey closely this year and never heard anything about it. Nobody heard about it until at least the day after the stanley cup was awarded, maybe two. I think it's revisionist history tbh.
I was at the game with my sister sitting twelve rows behind Belfour. There was absolutely NO explanation to the crowd about what had happened. There were NO replays on the Jumbotron. I saw Lindy come out of the dressing room screaming at the commissioner but Bettman paid him no attention. I thought Lindy was just being a sore loser. But in retrospect the commissioner was wrong not to address this. It wasn't until an hour later when we finally went into the hallway of the arena that we saw "Hockey Hotline" on the televisions with Mike Robitaille and Brian Blessing explaining what had happened. Until then I had no idea that the goal was controversial. The next day was all about the League scrambling to cover up their tracks. Did it change hockey forever??? For me it did. I am never dropping that kind of money on the NHL again - or any professional sport for that matter.
Stars fan here who lived and died through this and every other Stanley Cup run since they moved to Dallas. This was an EXCELLENT breakdown. Quite possibly the best I’ve ever come across. Given how many time the Stars have come up short of hoisting the Cup since, we may be entering curse territory at this point!
This is the first time anyone bringing up this goal being unbiased. What a well written narrative! This is so well written - I seriously love this way of unbiased takes on so interesting hockey moments. Thank you for this - I finally can feel less hurt from this crime against the GOAT goalie Dominik Hašek.
Great video, I remember this like yesterday. The goal shouldn't have counted, however the Stars were the better team and would have likely still prevailed in the series. The Stars were also getting a big "push" by the NHL at the time, who wanted the southern teams to be successful for further expansion.
Okay, I'm about to watch this: but I think you should know that I'm from Dallas, but was stationed in San Diego during this time. California (West Coast) airs live "prime-time" games beginning at 5 or 6 PM. This game got over at 11 PM! I cannot fathom how Central Standard Time (Texans) or ESTers (Buffalo) survived! Also, to any sports fan, we ALL have felt the bitterness of defeat by a lousy call. It sucks. ... I mean, of course, not this time. No way! Stanley Cup Stars, baby!
This goal is controversial the same way global warming is controversial It's really not disputed at all, there's just a small handful of people who still won't shut up about it because they think the "controversy" makes them money
I remember staying up watching that game. The absolute anxiety battling with elation (as a young Stars fan at the time) on whether or not the goal would stay kept me awake until the next night. Glad to have gotten to see the Stars win the Cup, but definitely wish it'd happened without the controversy. Hasek was an absolute beast, and nearly carried that team to a cup.
Most people in the comments seem to be more sympathetic to the Sabres, which is fair enough. However it's a shame that Stars fans have to contend with their only cup being so shrouded by controversy. I hope they get another cup soon
I'm a Stars fan and I live in Buffalo. I love arguing with Sabres fans about this. It just might be the Stars only Stanley Cup in my lifetime. Until the Stars win another one or if they win another one, I can always say they won their only Stanley Cup in my backyard

At the next season's Buffalo home opener, fans began chanting, "NO GOAL! NO GOAL!" before the national anthem was finished! Fans were wearing t-shirts featuring the overhead photo of Hull's skate in the crease.
If the rule was changed to allowing possession to qualify the goal, then it's a good goal regardless of what Buffalo fans or players think. It seems like it legitimately was changed earlier that year, Hull had possession of the puck before his skate was in the crease and he scored with his foot in the crease while he never lost possession. Good goal.
Buffalo likely still loses that Finals, but to credit a goal *which clearly wasn’t* by the rule in place at that time (which I remember all too well) was absolute horse shit. 😠
Yeah. The refs started calling it out of nowhere it seemed. The NHL had a whole offseason to fix it and instead just shrunk the crease a tiny bit. It was an insane time. Then again, the nhl often practices self-sabotage.
Hasek was brilliant. I played goal in ice hockey, but never to any real competitive level. I remember making a few pretty stunning looking saves but many were really just kind of lucky. Hasek made stunning saves all the time. There may have been a few lucky saves for him, but he was all talent and one of the best. A pleasure to watch.
06-07 was their best chance to win the cup but they were decimated by injuries. Now here we are in 2024 and they’re about to miss the playoffs for the 14th season in a row next year
I remember these games very well and while I was routing for the Dallas Stars I had a glimpse of a skate inside the ring. I thought they were gonna have to go back on ice. I went to bed as I was too exhausted. Thanks for clarifying the NHLs ruling. Good shit.
They called back so many goals during the late 90's for putting their pinky toe in the crease. But they let this one go and counted it. Still, to this day, I say: "No Goal!"
False. They called back goals in the early 90s and then adjusted the rule to allow a goal like Hull’s. In fact, the ONLY season in which it was automatically disallowed for being in the crease was 91-92. After much controversy, it was altered via an NHL Memo.
@@ObscuraDeCapra I know the correct time of the decade where they disallowed goals and it was 1996-1999. I remember watching the Montreal Canadiens back then and so many goals were called back.
@@LastLetterisZed702 From the NHL's historical rule change page, which I would link except RUclips is twitchy about links: 1991-92 Video replays employed to assist referees in goal/no goal situations. Size of goal crease increased. Crease changed to semi-circular configuration. Time clock to record tenths of a second in last minute of each period and overtime. Major and game misconduct penalty for checking from behind into boards. Penalties added for crease infringement and unnecessary contact with goaltender. Goal disallowed if puck enters net while a player of the attacking team is standing on the goal crease line, is in the goal crease or places his stick in the goal crease. The next change was in 99-00 1999-2000 Each team to play 25 home and 25 road games using the two-referee system. Crease rule revised to implement a "no harm, no foul, no video review" standard. Teams to play with four skaters and a goaltender in regular-season overtime. If a goal is scored in regular-season overtime, the winner is awarded two points and the loser one point. In no goal is scored in overtime, both teams are awarded one point. And what you utterly failed to understand, because you either don't want to or didn't even bother watching the video, is that possession of the puck nullified this. The person with the puck was allowed to skate into the crease as long as there was no contact with the goalie. The rule clarified that a player does not lose possession if they shoot the puck. In other words, there was only controversy in the minds of butthurt Buffalo fans and people that can't be bothered to do an internet search before posting something.
People can call the rule stupid as much as they want, but it was called against Buffalo all season long including the series against Toronto before that. Dragging out some weird NHL memo about possession doesn’t change the debate. It wasn’t a goal.
Amazing job bud!!!! What a flashback. Back then internet didn't really exist and everyone tuned into the NHL Stanley Cup even if it wasn't your team. That year Buffalo knocked my team out (The Leafs) so Buffalo became our team due to that. Buffalo in my opinion was The team that you didn't want to watch. But it was Hockey Night in Canada so we had no choice lol!
As explained in the video, Hull kicking the puck to himself grants him possession, and thus aligns with the memo the NHL sent out earlier in the season. By the letter of the rules, it's a good goal.

I don't religiously watch hockey videos but this was really good! My next paragraph has some loosely actual things related to the video. The rest is just me talking personal thoughts of a couple of teams. I just dumped all that crap below. So be warned, you might strain your eyes and brains. I get as far as the Blackhawks with it.. Those Stars and Sabres jerseys, man.. In the arguably most fun period of hockey, with the most entertaining goalies. I'm not native to NA so I always picked a team I like based on the players I liked in the NHL. On that period, it was the Sabres because of Hasek. Then after a few-year break of watching the NHL, I started to like the Blackhawks. It was around the time when Kane and Toews started playing. I still root for the Blackhawks, but I enjoy watching the Sabres and Stars. Another big one for me in the '90s was the Avalanche. I love them nowadays as well, they have Rantanen from my home country and has the same last name as I do. And he is gooood. Obviously not the only reason though. Another off topic remark: I hope the Blackhawks dig their way out of the mudpuddle they soaked and stirred, to grow to be a stronger team. There are pieces of a puzzle with lots of unfitting shapes and sizes. I hope they get one sharp boxcutter, which would even out the whole picture and the spaces between. They have the big piece on the center, which they can move around a bit, but the corners, sides and spaces between all that need some serious thought as well as trying, failing and getting better. The failing part preferably being the less frequent repetition of the aforementioned ones for the upcoming years. Lots of rambling about different teams and players, but that concludes my personal experience as an enjoyer of the sport.

Dallas’ current look is one of the best in the league.

If I may add some of the story…
I was a reporter at the (infamous) 1999 Draft in Boston.

I still remember my dad and I listening to the game on the radio as we drove back home between OT1 and OT2. I still remember standing in my family living room, pointing to the TV and saying "He was in the crease." as my dad flopped back into his chair. I thought I was over it all. Then I remembered.
NHL 99 might be my favorite game ever. Eric Lindros (favorite player at the time) on the cover. Ah man take me back!

Buffalo Fans have nightmares of Dallas teams though the 1990's
Hasek challenging that shooter at the bottom of the faceoff circle sums up 90s goaltending right there. Fantastic stuff
It was a perfectly legal goal. Only very stupid people think otherwise.

the new "foot in the crease" is the offside replays.
The reason this was so controversial, is for 8 years, that’s not how it was interpreted or applied.

Green didn't own the Stars at the time. Tom Hicks bought the team in 1995
There was a playoff game from a season prior where PJ Axellson on the Bruins had a game winning goal disallowed due to the foot in the crease rule, and the Bruins would later lose the game. I've been looking for footage of that no-goal for like 20 years.
That footage is on RUclips.

Truly a fan of your videos. What a great story. And so well explained.
Btb hes not under rated here even decades later id see just about any of those 99' jerseys
Your videos are incredible. Great job.

A rule that should have never been. How it stood as long as it did is a complete travesty.
Yeah. The refs started calling it out of nowhere it seemed. The NHL had a whole offseason to fix it and instead just shrunk the crease a tiny bit. It was an insane time. Then again, the nhl often practices self-sabotage.

1999-2000 Each team to play 25 home and 25 road games using the two-referee system.
I still vividly remember watching this game!!!
People can call the rule stupid as much as they want, but it was called against Buffalo all season long including the series against Toronto before that. Dragging out some weird NHL memo about possession doesn’t change the debate. It wasn’t a goal.
It also doesn’t change the fact that the Stanley Cup Champions for 1999 will forever be the Dallas Stars. Let it go man. lol
NO GOAL!!! HULL WAS IN THE DAMN CREASE
GOAL!!!!!!!!!
All these years later and the debate rages on. 😆
As explained in the video, Hull kicking the puck to himself grants him possession, and thus aligns with the memo the NHL sent out earlier in the season. By the letter of the rules, it's a good goal.
@@jsquared1013 Nobody cares about the memo. If a rules adjustment isn't disclosed publicly, then it doesn't count. EVERYONE deserves to know the rules under which the goddamn game is being played. If the NHL had actually done its job and released the memo correctly, then fine, the goal is in line with the change, and it's a good goal. But they didn't do that. You don't get to have a star chamber NHL where they get to make up or change rules and not fucking tell people. They don't get to retroactively say "oh, no, we changed the rule and just didn't bother telling you." The problem isn't the Stars. It's not Hull. It's not even the refs. The problem is Gary Bettman and the other assorted incompetent asshats who run the league and can't even release a message about rules change correctly. Fuck the NHL. No goal.
/not in *any* way a Sabres fan
@@jsquared1013 I didn't see a memo. Nobody saw a memo. Commentators were confused. Nobody knew what the hell was going on because that goal had been called back all season long. Now suddenly there isn't even a review. There isn't even an immediate explanation until the following day. That's because they knew they screwed up and invented a 'private memo' after the fact.
Dude I had no clue about this until you made a video. You explained it very well and the clips were very relevant to the topic.
Great video my friend...very interesting choices by some of the presidents. I will call you out a little bit on your take on Gone With the Wind and The Searchers, both are among the greatest films of all time and incredible in my opinion. And yes you should definitely delve into the John Ford film, there are so many good ones, but may i recommend The Informer and Stagecoach to start off
I don't religiously watch hockey videos but this was really good!
