Nah so they issued a "booster offshore divert" command 4 minutes into flight due to unspecified criteria not being met for the catch attempt far before Max-V was reached. Something interesting to note. At 8:04, the booster still acts in the same way it would as if there was a gantry there to catch it. This is on purpose, so that they can still grab the telemetry data as if it's landing on a gantry. I wouldn't even call it a failure, since they're still able to test many of the metrics of a gantry-assisted landing out at sea.

At the moment, I don't think SpaceX's chances for success to land a person either on the moon or on Mars alone is that high. Understandably so, SpaceX is quite efficient in spending. However, so was the Apollo program, surprisingly (since they never even focused on reusability), and this program cost almost twice the amount in current day dollars as the total predicted worth of SpaceX just to get to the Moon. However, I think an increase in funding for SpaceX and many other companies could help NASA out to get our astronauts both to the Moon and Mars. How is America supposed to compete against a country like China if we're burning through obscene amounts of money in foreign wars? We will not be able to do it, even if we have the engineering might to do it.
