I’ve done two overnight train journeys in Thailand. The first was from Bangkok to Surat Thani (on my way to Koh Phangan). I opted for the communal compartment rather than a private cabin, as I was travelling alone and I just seemed an unnecessary expense. It was a great experience, I was chatting with a couple across the aisle, who were from the U.K., like me, talking about our travels. When the staff member came and made our beds up, I thought I might have trouble sleeping with the movement of the train, but I was out like a light and had the best night’s sleep I’d had in ages. Woke up, nice and early, to views of the jungle. The second time was on the same journey you did, although I went from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. 8 had a couple of hours to kill before my train and I don’t like having to rush, so I went to a little cafe next to the station. They had a beautiful little garden, with a pond and some fish, and I relaxed there with some food and several mango smoothies to cool down. Slept just as well as the previous trip, although there was hardly anyone in my compartment, just a couple of people and we were spread out, so no conversation. I much prefer the train to catching a plane. It may take longer, but I’m travelling through the night, so I’m asleep anyway. It was much cheaper than a flight when I went, so it saved me money, plus it’s one less night I have to pay for a hotel. Also, it’s a lot less hassle than boarding a plane, and much more comfortable. To me, it’s like going back to your hotel at night, except the hotel is a train and I get to wake up in a whole new city.
@@WhereNextFamily I've taken flights (more expensive back then @ maybe 3-3500THB) but more often the buses from CM/BK @ around 600THB one way. They turn the aircon onto ultra-chryo mode, presumably to encourage sleep under a supplied blanket. They stop part way so anyone can get off and have a meal, and you get a "breakfast" onboard before you hit the final destination. Really not bad by coach I'd say - never tried the trains though.
Following your conclusion (and I'm not up to date on current prices) unless you're getting a kick from scenery, an all inclusive overinght coach (you don't pay extra for your stop off meal or the "breakfast") is pretty good. Flights are cheap right now, but expect them to reinflate to pre-pandemic prices soon (unless we get another!). Might be useful to know that certainly in Chiangmai, a typical unskilled wage is 10,000THB/month before stoppages - serving coffee, working in a postal dept or killing chickens in a factory, 10,000THB is almost a blanket wage. Agricultural workers get as little as 300THB/day. Average wages in this order are more like 15,000THB/month for Bangkok as you might expect. A pint bottle of Chang beer (lager) is around 60 THB A packet of 20 cigarettes is around 70 THB A cheap meal can be bought for as little as 30 THB Overall, the cost of living in Thailand is 1/5th that of the UK, and it never gets genuinely cold. If you're a puss like me, you'll want aircon so expect electricity bills in the order of
My wife booked us overnight to Vientiane, Laos. The seats were converted to single beds 5 foot long. I am over 6 foot tall, so could not get comfortable. When arrived next morning i had developed kidney failure. I spent the next week in a hotel room to recover. Then we had a very nice vacation in Laos. Then i booked airline tickets to fly back to Bangkok.

When I was young a few decades ago), my mom and aunt took us three kids to CM. We travelled by overnight train from Bkk. It was so much fun. I still remember that on the way back from CM to Bkk we bought some local food from the Varorot Market (sticky rice, local herbal sausage, fried pork, local green chilly paste) and had our dinner on the train. It was so delicious as we were eating good food on a train. It was such a good memory for us children. ❤😊 😊❤
On the next occasion, this train station will undergo changes because Central Mall and King Power are currently bidding to construct a shopping mall in the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station

35 years ago I used to take a train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and Bangkok back to Chiang Mai. It was much more difficult. The train took 14 to 15 hours. Now Thai trains have developed a lot. Not as delayed as before, train journeys are sometimes boring, sometimes spectacular.🇹🇭
We did a 16 hour train journey from trivandrum to Puducherry Southern India, first class was fully booked so we went second class and there were 6 bunk beds in our cabin plus 2 beds opposite the walk way. we had to book online before we went putting in our ages and realised on the train why we had to do it, we thankfully had the two bottom bunks because were not young enough to climb up to the top two haha, scenery was amazing with free chai and meals loved it, thank you for this video as we are thinking of doing this next year xx
Hey Guys - just stumbled across your channel and watched some of your videos, and i must say its so nice watching your family travel videos, because they are authentic, i am annoyed that YT keeps pushing these family videos on me where the families confess to giving their children the true life experience, yet they are waited on hand and foot from luggage being carried for them and staying in hotels with personal butlers and traveling first class, that will not teach their children the real world, only that they can have anything they want, and life is not always like that - but your videos show how a real family can do things and i admire you for taking your daughter on this amazing journey - I am older now and did my travels before the age of youtube and smart phones and travelled all over the world, but then family life got in the way and work etc, my children will be 18 soon and i intend on travelling again to see how things have changed over the last 25 years, i am sure i will need to adapt my travels based on my age now, but i look forward to it and i will be binge watching some of your playlists to get me motivated - Thanks
Thank you for the kind words. We're glad that you enjoyed watching and that you can see we don't airbrush anything. This is our life on the road full time so what you see is exactly what we are doing 🙂 Sometimes we do dream of the day where Malia is 18 and we can travel romantically again 😂 Hope you have a blast 🙌

It was the coldest train ride that I ever endured. It was 62F in my First Class Cabin which I had my leather jacket on and shivering all night long while other areas will be 95F. One can easily get sick from this. Will probably never travel on the train again.
Nice genuine VLOG & great family train travel. Beautiful little daughter at good age travelling with great parents & she will remember this train journey watching jungle by train restaurant window. Train journey is a timeless experience through South Asia. Great family bonding. Enjoy more family travels in South East Asia with your beautiful little daughter. Bon voyage
What a beautiful family. You all have such friendly faces. The room looks to be just slightly larger than a roomette that you would find on an Amtrak train in the US. I don't think I have ever seen a long route train where you can open the windows. This is pretty unique.
Very informative and entertaining video. As visiting Thailand is on my bucket list and a close friend retired to Chang Mai, so coming across your video was perfect! Thank you for the video! We have yet to do an overnight train (we've dont many flights and buses however) but we plan to give this a go when we arrive in August.
It's a huge terminal because of the China Belt & Road initiative where they are sharing the cost with Thailand to built a high speed train from Bejing to Signapore through Thailand. Rail travel will be expanded and will be more common than flying in 5-10 years.
I love this thai train, wish to do again. There is a newest train leave from Bangkok around 18 o'clock and arrive Chiang Mai around 7 o'clock in the morning. Enjoy Thailand!
Thanks for a very informative and well edited video (loved the intro music). I've been to Thailand many times but I never did the train ride. Thanks to your video we'll definitely give it a go when we return.
Traveling by train is always healing my soul. I mostly travel alone so daytime would be better for me. Thank you for coming Thailand. I love and accepted your comments. Hopefully our service will satisfy all the passenger in the future. *Your British accents is very lovely. 🤭
Omg, I took a sleeper train from Palermo Cecily to Munich Germany and I don't think I've ever slept so soundly. It was a great trip. I was ready to rock and roll when we arrived in Germany. If you ever get the chance, take a sleeper train. Obviously you don't taje the train for the money. It's about the experience, photos/scenery.
I first took the First-Class sleeper from Nong Khai to Bangkok with my 'large' family back in 2003. Great experience. We did it again in 2010 and then in 2021 - I live in the Philippines. For me, train trips in Thailand are wonderful. I have done BKK to Isaan, BKK to the South (extendinf to Malaysia) as well as BKK to Ubon, Khorat, Roi Et and Loei Province. It's all fun.
We are staying a month in Pattaya and feel like Chiang Mai might be a great spot to extend it. We also travel full time so checking bags is always a hassle. Train sounds like the way to go!
The station you at in building for the high speed bullet train they are under construction right now,in the future is be new central station for express train ,high speed bullet station and also BTS ,MRT all will be link in 1 station.
it is a beautiful journey, did it some time ago in 2nd class recliner seats from the centre of Bangkok. Can see why they might want to reduce the trains from there as people live very close to the track. What a contrast from Bangkok to Chan Mai!!
Good Coffee and Thailand. 2 words that never belong in the same sentence. hehehe. Every time I go to Thailand I ween myself off coffee a week or 2 before I go so I dont have to deal with Thailands version of coffee. Thanks for the video. I usually fly up to the north but I do love trains and I think I might give this a go. Cheers.
This came up in my feed. Great vlog. As you called it, depends on your agenda. Some of the views you had here were for me priceless, and to a certain extent a main reason why you're heading up north in the first place...the jungle, the hills, the mist. The old Hua Lamphong Station was a sauna yet so much part of the experience. Had a couple mates on separate trips get food poisoning from evening meals, cold beers all good...but there was nothing like the rocking of the train whilst you were trying to get to sleep. Loved it. Yes get stung on train food...sabai, sabai. Wonderful trip down memory lane for an old fella. 😂🙏
The worst part of traveling by train is food. They're 3rd class over all. No matter what class you've been there. Next time, I recommended you trying with KIHA-183 tourist package train. I'm sure that your little Maria gonna love it.
Just found your channel and really enjoyed it. I would probably take the train for the experience and just pack fruit and drinks and nuts for my repast .
Nice honest description of this train trip! Good input! So how much was the private compartment for one person? The monthly rental for that shabby apartment seemed a bit high!
Aircon was absolutely fine 🙂 Toilets were basic, but clean. They have a toilet that is essentially a hole and you can see the track whizzing past under you 😂 but it's clean
The old station Hua Lampong is just 4 km south of the new station and it is still inner-city and not outskirts. Krungthep is a 20 mill City and edge of town is dozens of miles further. Thx for taking train
Hi. I went on a train from Bangkok to Hua hin about 6 years ago. They had a kitchen on the train and served fresh thai food in the cabin or what you call it. Both my thai gf and i thought the food was really good and the price was about 150 baht for one meal. Thanks for a good video, i look some more. Take care.
I have taken the night train 2 or 3 times between Chiang Mai and Bangkok, most recently in 1995.i recognized some of those stations, especially the one in KunTan. We hiked up that mountain and camped on the summit. I remember looking down at night and seeing the train snaking through the valley below. What a beautiful scene.
The train from Mombasa Kenya to Nairobi was magical! We were able to see elephants, zebras, buffalo and more. It is very modern and incredibly on time. it gets into Nairobi at night so you also get a gorgeous sunset on the way in. First class was a bit more spacious but definitely not luxury.
Did you not consider taking the new rolling stock train fully air conditioned. It has tv in 1st class and good showers. The train assistant will get you food or drink on request. As for flying remember you have to travel to the airport and be there well in advance. Be careful allowing your child to hang out the windows. Enjoy Chiang Mai.
Yes the new train number 9 was fully booked unfortunately, so this was our only option. We were very careful with hanging out of the windows, and didn't take our eyes off her (and the surroundings). Thank you 🙏
We took the train in Sri Lanka and it was one of the worst experiences ever haha. Ina was mid-way through her pregnancy and the train was PACKED. We had to sit on our bags, half hanginging out of the door because there was no space on the train 🤣
Lol even studio flats in the UK where I’m staying in the South are going for £1000 per month now due to inflation….. don’t come back!!! Nice video love the train journey 👍🏻
That looks pretty cool, normally I fly to Chaing Mai. We generally visit and then go back to BKK. I've done a few sleeper buses in Vietnam and a sleeper train in Vietnam but the scenery looks really nice.
I have a flight booked from Bangkok to Chian Mai for two adults in April. Seat selection, luggage, food add-ons and taxes add up pretty quickly. Price was $170.

Thanks for watching. To be honest the difference wasn't that much except 10yrs ago we stayed in a more open room shared with other people. This was the first time doing it private. Last time as well the restaurant car turned into a party car at night but apparently that stopped during covid and never took off again. Apart from that the experience was pretty similar I'd say

The expresstrain No.51 Bangkok - Chiangmai is my favorite choice to Chiangmai, The view during Denchai(7:30am) to Changmai(12:30) is very nice 🙂
Thanks for sharing!
Lovely video of your adventure, your family is beautiful, stay safe enjoy your travels - take care
Thank you! You too!
It 's so good for your trip
🙏❤️
It's a huge terminal because of the China Belt & Road initiative where they are sharing the cost with Thailand to built a high speed train from Bejing to Signapore through Thailand. Rail travel will be expanded and will be more common than flying in 5-10 years.
Thanks for the info! I had no idea
Awesome video, I've been wanting to take the night train for a while now!
Thank you. It's definitely worth it at least once 😊
Thanks for the insight. We are planning a trip for 2024...
Glad it was helpful! Have a great trip!
I love this thai train, wish to do again.
There is a newest train leave from Bangkok around 18 o'clock and arrive Chiang Mai around 7 o'clock in the morning.
Enjoy Thailand!
Yes unfortunately that one was fully booked, so we had to get the later one
Nice trip on the train... seeing the jungle from the windows... maximum!
Yes it was! 🙂
Really useful info and insights that help my planning for next years trip - thanks a lot!
You're most welcome 😊
Thanks for a very informative and well edited video (loved the intro music). I've been to Thailand many times but I never did the train ride. Thanks to your video we'll definitely give it a go when we return.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the support ❤️
Very lovely family and informative video - thanks!

We love Thailand 🇹🇭 ❤️ 😍
@@WhereNextFamily Thank you very much for your love.
Traveling by train is always healing my soul. I mostly travel alone so daytime
would be better for me.
Thank you for coming Thailand. I love and
accepted your comments. Hopefully our service will satisfy all the passenger in the future.
*Your British accents is very lovely. 🤭
Yes we love the train as well 😊
Not sure if 13 hours in the day time would be so fun though 🤣
Thank you for the kind words
@@WhereNextFamily Thank you for your replied. I am traveling alone and
never sleep in train. Night time for myself is the thing that I have to avoid. However if they can reduce time to 11 hours would be better for all passengers.
@@WhereNextFamilyit’s 10 hours during the day due to a DMU train instead of a loco hauled train
You are a nice family travelling 'heavy'. It was a pleasure to bump into your blog. Wish you all the best and good safe travels. 👍
Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks for sharing! Yes its true 😊
is also good. thank you sharing wonderful video. Have a nice day
🙏❤️
I first took the First-Class sleeper from Nong Khai to Bangkok with my 'large' family back in 2003. Great experience. We did it again in 2010 and then in 2021 - I live in the Philippines. For me, train trips in Thailand are wonderful. I have done BKK to Isaan, BKK to the South (extendinf to Malaysia) as well as BKK to Ubon, Khorat, Roi Et and Loei Province. It's all fun.
Yes trains are a great way to see a country. I just took an 11hr train in Sri Lanka and it was beautiful 🙏
We are staying a month in Pattaya and feel like Chiang Mai might be a great spot to extend it. We also travel full time so checking bags is always a hassle. Train sounds like the way to go!
Chiang Mai will be a breath of fresh air for sure 🙂
Thanks for sharing your daughter is lovely and cute, enjoy your trip to Chiang Mai.
Thank you so much!
Nice job with the video. Informative. Nice family. Remain safe.
Thank you! Will do!
Looks like a great way to see the countryside in relative comfort.
It really is!
Excellent Video. I may do the same trip in a few months. The video is clear. What type of camera do you use?
Have fun!
We shoot on Sony FX30
The station you at in building for the high speed bullet train they are under construction right now,in the future is be new central station for express train ,high speed bullet station and also BTS ,MRT all will be link in 1 station.
Ah that makes sense. I heard there will also be a mall!
@@WhereNextFamily yes, but the bullet train track is still under construction maybe in about 5-6 years to be finished
Very helpful video! Planning to travel with 5 yrs old kido soon 😊 thank you
Glad you found it useful 😊
Thank you very much for visiting Thailand.❤🙏
Our pleasure! Thank you for the warm welcome 🙂
Zermatt Switzerland. Just breathtaking. Going soon to asia, thanks for the tips
Have fun!
I love that they still have windows that open on that train. I def need to check out Thailand. Cheers from USA 🥂
Yes its an awesome experience. Get in there quickly before health and safety rules come in 😂
it is a beautiful journey, did it some time ago in 2nd class recliner seats from the centre of Bangkok. Can see why they might want to reduce the trains from there as people live very close to the track. What a contrast from Bangkok to Chan Mai!!
Yes, you are right!
Cheers.
Oh man, no way! Thailand has some amazing coffee! Not everyone knows how to make it but there are some amazing coffee shops that make an awesome cup!
I took an overnight bus. Very nice comfortable seats. Had a on coach hostess, water & snacks. Another's way to travel
Very nice! I've heard the busses nowadays are pretty good 👍
Hi man, greets from holland. I really love the night trains in Thailand!!
I always look out for them! 😁✌🏻👍🏻
Welcome to the channel 🙏
Yes they are great fun 😀
Although it take a long time, but you can see a lot of beautiful scenery. Happy to see your family enjoy the trip in Thailand.❤
It really is!
Thanks for the comment 😊
Yes we really enjoyed the trip and the more we think about it the more we would choose train again and again 🙌
Wellcome to Thailand🇹🇭 I like your family❤❤
Thank you 😊 We like you too ❤️
Welome to Thailand ❤ Love your family 👪
Travel by train with friend/family is an good option for chilling bring any book/card game to play with it's really much fun
Very true 👍
The worst part of traveling by train is food. They're 3rd class over all. No matter what class you've been there. Next time, I recommended you trying with KIHA-183 tourist package train. I'm sure that your little Maria gonna love it.
Oh thanks, I'll look into it 😊🙏
Just found your channel and really enjoyed it. I would probably take the train for the experience and just pack fruit and drinks and nuts for my repast .
Welcome aboard! Glad you're enjoying the content.
Yes you've definitely got the right idea!
Always take Timms coffee bags with you when you travel in SEA.
Great idea!
Nice honest description of this train trip! Good input! So how much was the private compartment for one person? The monthly rental for that shabby apartment seemed a bit high!
I think you have to pay for 2 people even if you're alone
Great video! How was the aircon in the cabin? Were the bathroom facilities clean?
Aircon was absolutely fine 🙂
Toilets were basic, but clean.
Yes its a bit of a mission to get to. I heard they are bidding to build ANOTHER mall on the side of it
ขอให้คุณและครอบครัว เดินทางปลอดภัยนะคะ เที่ยวทั่งไทยให้สนุกค่า 👍❤️❤️
Thanks so much ❤️
Take care.
Thanks for sharing!
Brother, you have the most beautiful family a man can imagine!
You are so kind ❤️
I have taken the night train 2 or 3 times between Chiang Mai and Bangkok, most recently in 1995.i recognized some of those stations, especially the one in KunTan. We hiked up that mountain and camped on the summit. I remember looking down at night and seeing the train snaking through the valley below. What a beautiful scene.
That's awesome 🙂
The train from Mombasa Kenya to Nairobi was magical! We were able to see elephants, zebras, buffalo and more. It is very modern and incredibly on time. it gets into Nairobi at night so you also get a gorgeous sunset on the way in. First class was a bit more spacious but definitely not luxury.
Thanks for sharing! We'd love to do this 😊
@@WhereNextFamily I did that train with my daughter when it was the old train. Best journey of my life!
How much was it?
@@CassandraMooree About $30 per person
Did you not consider taking the new rolling stock train fully air conditioned. It has tv in 1st class and good showers. The train assistant will get you food or drink on request. As for flying remember you have to travel to the airport and be there well in advance. Be careful allowing your child to hang out the windows. Enjoy Chiang Mai.
Yes the new train number 9 was fully booked unfortunately, so this was our only option.
We were very careful with hanging out of the windows, and didn't take our eyes off her (and the surroundings).
Thank you 🙏
I've done the Bangkok to CM and had a great time. But the best rail journey I've had was in Sri Lanka, Colombo to Kandy and onto Ellya.
We took the train in Sri Lanka and it was one of the worst experiences ever haha.
Ina was mid-way through her pregnancy and the train was PACKED. We had to sit on our bags, half hanginging out of the door because there was no space on the train 🤣
welcome to Thailand, have a great time and enjoy your trip.
Thanks! 😃
Amazing channel. I really love your videos. 👍🙏
Thank you very much!
Lol even studio flats in the UK where I’m staying in the South are going for £1000 per month now due to inflation….. don’t come back!!! Nice video love the train journey 👍🏻
Don't worry we couldn't afford to come back even if we wanted to 🤣🤣🤣
Really enjoyed this breakdown of travel with the pros and cons as well as a few tips! New Subscriber
Welcome aboard! Thanks for joining us ❤️
That looks pretty cool, normally I fly to Chaing Mai. We generally visit and then go back to BKK. I've done a few sleeper buses in Vietnam and a sleeper train in Vietnam but the scenery looks really nice.
Yes its a very nice journey 😊
hope your channel continues growing...
I hope so too. Thanks for the support 🙏
I have a flight booked from Bangkok to Chian Mai for two adults in April. Seat selection, luggage, food add-ons and taxes add up pretty quickly. Price was $170.
Yes the prices can of course vary but it was true at the time of filming that flights were particularly cheap
Thank you for visiting Thailand
Our pleasure! Thanks for having us 🙏
Many times both ways but not yet from the new station great fun
Thanks it was a lot of fun 😊
Great video! Whats the biggest different from now and 10 years ago, beside the lovely girl u guys have now? I got 4 kids now haha, last time i was in thailand i had 0! i rly want to take them to thailand, so done with all inclusive trips in euirope.
So glad i found this video and your channel, super good vibes and very enjoyable to watch! keep up the good work!
Very informative think I will get the train there and fly back thanks 😂
Have fun!
Thanks Mate. Good breakdown .. if a 5 year old loves it then .................
She definitely did!
Thank you, this was really helpful 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Loved your film thank you. We are going in March, how do you actually book the first class train from the UK in advance?
We used an agent called Bangkok Buddy. First class cabins are very limited so its definitely recommended to book in advance
