David Frum my politics and yours could not be farther apart, but I find you understand the Canadian political picture and articulate the situation better than most. Better than any on the TV networks. You are up there with Bob Hepburn. Thank you.
but he's totally wrong about TRUMP and MAGA
He does understand it well but he does interpret it for a conservative viewpoint.
of course, he's Cdn!

Probably but Poly is going to be an as yet inconceivable nightmare.
Nope. Not at all he is going to a great PM and start to get Canada back on it’s feet again. No more phony, smarmy nepo babies for leaders.
Why?

Excellent interview with Frum, as usual. But I'd like to hear his thoughts on Poilievre.
Agreed. I don't know anything about Poilievre's policy stances on anything except the carbon tax. As a Conservative news outlet, I would expect to hear more about the current leader of the Conservative Party and how his ideas measure up, or compare with, the current government's.
I have loved this series of conversations and seek it out with anticipation each two weeks. Thank you both intelligent insights. May your holidays be peaceful and rejuvenating.
Spoken as a good conservative but the prospect of a Conservative government under Pierre Polievre is absolutely frightening. So quit you political b.s.
Thank you both of you. .All the best for 2025
My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crisis, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance.

We hate anyone who has been in power for 3 mandates. Trudeau sr, Mulroney, Chretien, Harper etc. The press turns on them and we get sick of them and we convince ourselves that the new guy will be way better. Then we start all over. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
You are spot on. Now it is the Conjob's turn to disappoint us a la Harper. Trump hates Justin so don't send him to negotiate. Pepe Polywog will fill his diaper when he gets in a room with Trump. We're screwed.
This is the summary actually. People didn't vote Trudeau in because of weed legalization, they just wanted a change. They basically get sick of the status quo no matter what or how successful the government is!
Thanks Pete. As you said we will get fooled again Cheers from Montreal

David, l really enjoyed hearing your thoughts. Wish you a very Happy Holidays. I will work hard to keep my chin up🇨🇦🎄
David Frum lecturing us to not be pessimistic?? Priceless...
Frum always felt like an armchair general to me. All talk, no real experience. Still interesting to listen to sometimes.
As a native born Canadian, for all of my 70 year life most of my contemporaries have considered Canada's essential economy primarily based in resource extraction, industrial processing and the associated manufacturing. The last 9 years of Liberal governance have created a patchwork of economic zones based on reconciliation founded upon popular sentiment. This Quixotic policy has introduced far to much market uncertainty to the essential part of our economy. Without a unified national policy expressing our feasible capacity and interests there will be a lack of genuine representation that serves no one.
Canada's different provinces have always had different economic strengths and weaknesses. That patchwork existed long before Justin Trudeau was even born.
Serves no one?? Canada is serving the thing it was meant to serve ever since confederation, as stated in the pre-amble to the BNA Act.
"And whereas such a Union would conduce to the Welfare of the Provinces and promote the Interests of the British Empire."
That's right; we are a colony of the British Empire.
Great summation David, there is always a way forward. Thanks
Excellent analysis, and with all the seriousness, I appreciate the points oh good humour. Thanks a lot!!

Yes!! Barbara Frum... Thanks so much for mentioning her.
I think that the Conservative party should also go into a leadership race. Poilièvre is not the guy to face our economic and political situation with intelligence. He’s too much of an attention seeker, no substance to him at all.
Poilievre is the right stuff ... if you're a fly.
@ 👍👍👍😂😂😂
Poilievre brings up the Harper (anybody but) vibe with many of us.
He does have substance. But the substance is all sandpaper.
That's a great suggestion, but PP's control over the Con party is too great to allow that to happen.
Thank you for bringing David to us during this tumultuous time in Canadian politics!
Not one word on Poilievre and what he'll bring to the table if he gets elected. Up to now all what we get from that guy is criticism of the Government with wild assumptions and no strategy to look forward to!
You should pay more attention: watch, for example his lengthy interview months ago with Jordan Peterson.
We have Poilievre's record of non achievement & grandstanding under Harper. He seems only to.have got worse...

Great show, Sean, and I'm slightly left of centre, but have listened to and read David Frum for several years. I would love it if you had a more extensive conversation with him, to explore his thoughts on why he feels Canadian's productivity does not reflect work effort put in. I'd love to hear that addressed by key sectors such as agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and even the arts. (And if you've already covered this, could someone please share a link?) Thank you!
advice to pessimistic Canadians re. Trump & his high tariff warnings: it’s a mistake to let crisis thinking replace long term thinking
She may have lost confidence in Justin but only after he told he she was through, and hours before she would have to answer questions about the size of the deficit, which was bound to be painful for her. She never said 'No' to the PM, who is a guy who thinks of families when financial decisions are being made. She's as bad as he is.
I wish more people were cognizant of this. Leaving because of bad policies is one thing. She left one the eve of her being removed from her post. Good riddance.
Frum always looks like he just survived a 2 week tequila bender.
He lost his daughter this year 🙏🏼 be kind
@@tracevicente He was a propagandist for the illegal invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. He advocated for wars that resulted in millions of innocent people being injured and killed. He deserves nothing but scorn.
@@tracevicenteThank you for that reminder. 🙏
The pessimism is being presented with a horrible choice between Trudeau and Pollievre -like out of the frying pan and into the deep fryer...
That's Canada's dilemma. When a Liberal government gets worn out, as is inevitable, the only major alternative is an angry, pseudo populist, pro-oil, anti-environmental Conservative Party. The oil companies supported Trump, and they support Poilievre.
Coal exports to China and India have been growing YoY under Trudeau, as well as the US using CDN ports to export their powder river coal tax-free to Asia. JT is no environmentalist (or a feminist either apparently) The Liberals put on a good show of shell gaming carbon and have some people duped.
It is fast. Grandma here thanks you for your time with me, eat and sleep💙💖💙🥰
I always like Davids thoughts. They are profound and innovative. Also warmhearted guy with great voice. This man needs more coverage. Thx!🎉❤
David Frum, noted Canadian intellectual that doesn't live in Canada. Maybe that gives him a perspective others don't have. Good talk, as usual.
I don't disagree with Freeland's resignation, but I do not agree with her making her resignation letter public. Indeed this was designed to take him down. I do believe Trudeau should step down to stave off the Conservatives getting their way and getting a snap election. The idea of Poilievre being our next Prime Minister worries me greatly. The Liberals need to put forward someone Canadians can see as their next Prime Minister, even if there is the slightest chance a new face could win over Poilievre.
Freeland is making a bid to become Liberal leader.
Build. Increase productivity. Integrate regions better. Let’s do it !
I think that you are too hard on Trudeau regarding Covid spending. At the time, the govt, as you pointed out was spending in good faith. The time was full of insecurity and fear. To his credit, and I don't agree with all of his decisions, Trudeau did a good job communicating and offering support in those angst ridden days. What is going on now is the typical infighting in Liberal party. Eg Martin, Turner. I think that we are looking at this from a Candian perspective. From a US lense, Trump will have other issues before US/ Canada trade. The market and Senate will be the guardrails for trump's policies.
You may recall that, in a French-language interview on La semaine des 4 Julie, Justin Trudeau labeled unvaccinated Canadians as "extremists," "misogynists," and "racists." That was the most arrogant rude statement a PM has ever said about the citizens he is suppose to represent, and he did it in the most cowardly way by saying it on French media. His government fueled fear and insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing policies that we now know-four years later-were dangerous mostly to children. Trudeau had the option to follow Canada's own policies but instead chose to align with the World Health Organization (WHO), an unelected body that no Canadian ever voted for.
Remember that “Covid spending” covers a lot more than just CERB, that also includes payouts to massive businesses that grew during the pandemic, that includes the ArriveCan app, that includes buying millions vaccines that would have to be thrown away. Of course there was a lot of spending that was necessary to keep people afloat but theres no question there was a ton of wasted money during that time.
Sure , increase spending during Covid- all governments did that. But it's 2024 and we don;t need $250 cheques , we need fiscal restraint so that out grandchildren and great grandchildren won't be stuck with paying down the debt.
@@ramprat5812 Yes , the Arrivcan scandal was swept under the rug. I think minister Jean -Yves Duclos is still in cabinet. So much for spending Canadians tax dollars in an irresponsible way. Noone takes the consequences and no one loses their job in this government.
@@suemo613 That is simply false. Trudeau called the freedom whiners holding communities hostage "extremists," "misogynists," and "racists." *Which was accurate.* The vast overwhelming majority of Canadians got vaccinated - which irrefutably saved lives!

Freeland is just a journalist, she should never be a finance minister … she does not have the skill with the job
I was always a fan of J. Trudeau, but it is long past time for him to step down. He is going to poison his legacy.
Too late. He has done that a long time ago.

I long for the days when it was an easy choice to decide which way to vote, whether it was based on the policies outlined, the debate performances or the apparent qualities of the leaders. 🇨🇦
The Poilievre comment of "who are you", is precisely the kind of smarmy, attention seeking remark that makes him so unpalatable. A politician shouting, 'look at me' from the rooftops, is not one to whom I will pay attention.
True. True. And, it's not Canadian style. There was a time in this fair land when the fumes of American Republicanism stood alone against the sun.

pervasive pessimism reflects an inability to think rationally. it reflects a propensity to react emotionally to shouting headlines. it reflects a shallow body of historical and cultural knowledge from which to engage in reasoned discussion. etc. It is tiresome. thank you for this post. I find it reassuring to hear David Frum's reflections.
Good advice in the last few minutes. I sure hope you are right and the right people step up.
The budget deficit target was 40 billion dollars. Of the 62 billion deficit 16 1/2 billion dollars was from a settlement with the indigenous people and 4 1/2 billion was from leftover covid spending and the government chose to apply it to one year. So in fact, the government hit its spending target for the year.
Fantastic!! Always! Can’t wait until the next pod
Always enjoy hearing David Frum - great wisdom
This is a huge issue for Trudeau.
Freeland vs 🤮trump.
Lets go!!
The country is a mess on important Federal files of housing, immigration, and dealing with the US of A to mention some of Canada's problems. Cost of Living as in the rich get richer and the poor remain poor is another major and not new issue. Somebody needs to fix things and get Canada to a better place. JT came in with sunny ways and better days. He migrated to hazy days, free lollipops and empty cupboards. Clearly something failed. Perhaps the entire Parliamentary system is the real issue. People living in glass houses are wasting so much time and energy throwing stones which avoids talking about real issues and bringing forth real solutions. I wish someone could explain to me why rich people get to defer tax and get taxed at 50% on capital gains thus maintaining and increasing wealth while labour has limited methods of gaining wealth via capital gains reduced tax but pays full income tax ( full tax on employment income and not the much smaller capital gains tax ). We need Royal Commissions on Health Care and on Income Tax Reforms. We need Royal Commission on Parliament to reduce the amount of turf wars between parties so that Parliament works for the better good of all ( all of Parliament works for all of Canada ). Can somebody explain how come we cannot train idle Canadians ( idle, not lazy ) for so many of the jobs we attempt to fill with immigration policy? How about a Royal Commission on Training. How about a Royal Commission Federal/Provincial relations?
Start packing your bags, Justin. :)
mr. Frum. talks. in Generic. Terms. and. Says. very. little
I was hoping for more from him, but turned off the interview after about ten minutes. Not much substance there.
From the Canadian perspective, the 25% tariff does increase the cost of our goods for U.S. buyers, but the weaker CAD helps mitigate the effect by keeping prices relatively lower in USD terms. This will make the tariff less punitive compared to a scenario where the CAD is closer to parity with the USD. Effectively then, a non issue.
That this is even a question is how out of touch all your elite media are. We Canadians have been done with Trudeau for a long time. Maybe the question is rather whether her resignation is the last straw to make a pathetically clinging to power leader concede?
I will not vote for any government after 2 terms in office. The politicians tend to get arrogant, complacent, and out of touch with the life of average Canadians. I've experienced this for 75 years and I don't think I'm wrong. I will vote for the Conservatives in the next election. Not because I have foolishly yoked my open mind to any particular ideology or doctrine but because a change is needed. I hope the change will do us good.
Great. Give another job to a friend. Shouldn't this be illegal? Giving a friend/babysitter the second highest job in the country?
a country like Canada can't just rely on finance people & Bay St. executives....we need a balance of blue and white -manufacturing and entrepreneurship
We need to remove trade barriers between provinces.
The best Canadians have always been happy to settled for peace, order and good government.
you are 1000% correct. in previous video Frum likened heavy manufacturing employees to fasr food workers. one career pays $30 an hour the other 12 dolllars an hour.he is wrong.

You touched on the subject of security - people within government feeling free to say what they want to, or contribute in unorthodox ways, or even just to spitball ideas - without fear of security breaches and the possible ramifications. What are Mr. Frum’s thoughts about the Conservative Leader’s refusal to submit to Security Clearance? I am dumbfounded that the party has just pretended that it is not a thing!
If he is to hold the government accountable why would he take the briefing? Let his deputy do that. Or better yet, why doesn’t Trudeau just rat out all the conservatives who are supposed to be beholden to foreign governments. To me, it is red herring and a pathetic attempt by the liberals to try to box in Poilievre and prevent him from criticizing them for their fecklessness regarding foreign interference. I would admit, that it seems ridiculous, now, to give him e briefing when they previously said he had swear to secrecy before he took it. Sounds like it was all a charade from a government that has been a bit of joke for the last couple of years.
@@mithridateseupator3492 It is a pathetic attempt by Polievre to dodge his responsibility as a party leader..he is the red herring. Incredibly lucid and intelligent as usual from David Frum.
Thank you David. We appreciate you coming on. All the best.
I think Mr.Speer and Mr. Frum underestimate the general dislike of Trudeau and the Liberals-polls not withstanding-as they are often inaccurate. I do like the more positive end that Mr. Frum mentions and I am inclined to believe him. But the damage the liberals have done will not go away for a very long time.
Trudeau has not done all this so-called “damage”. He has been a decent pm maligned at every turn. I will never forgive the press or conservatives got their disgusting behaviour.
A very understandable and interesting conversation. Thank you. I have subscribed.
i could listen to these gentlemen every day.
I have deep respect for Mr. Frum and his analysis. He did well to highlight Canada's productivity problems, a longstanding challenge that has festered under Trudeau's watch. Like many Canadians, I have hungered for a centrist or centre-right leadership that would tackle structural impediments to economic growth, productivity and fiscal sustainability, while also advancing essential responses to climate change. Alas, I do not hear such nuanced strategies coming from Pierre Poilievre; instead I hear the barbs and rantings of a MAGA North opportunist. He has skillfully tapped the grievances of Canadians without offering a coherent vision for remediation. This is where I can't agree with Mr. Frum - I do not "take comfort" from the prospect of a looming Poilievre government. When the Canadian Conservative party axed Erin O'Toole and went MAGA-populist they left me without a political home.
So stick with Bank Account Freezer Freeland!! $100 Billion is being shoveled in US economy, from Japanese investor!! Canada??? WHERE AREVTHE INVESTO😮RS??

Not starting to raise interest rates when inflation began to move higher in the second half of '21 was a big BOC mistake. The finance minister telling Canadians that rates would remain at low levels("inflation is transitory")as well only compounded the mistake and left the strong impression of incompetence. And hence here we are, with sharks circling in the water.😅
Tell us when Turdeau will be gone please!

Down voted.
Just listened to these two self important talking heads. Waste of time which I will not repeat. Frum has failed in his attempt to coat tail on his mother's reputation. won't do this again :(((
The primary drivers of inflation post-Covid were not the high levels of government spending needed to keep the economy going through that crisis and by extension people. The causes were the massive turn from people spending money on services to spending on stuff at a time when supply chains were snarled (remember the jammed ports) and factory output curtailed. Add to that the surge in energy prices and the cost of inputs like fertilizers due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and you can account for most of the inflation spike. Countries worldwide saw the same inflationary pressures whether or not their governments undertook massive spending in 2020.
I fell in trust first.
This is just wild as we head into the next 4 years with Trump's agenda, the Canadian Mortgage rates remaining unchanged, and a huge number of these mortgages coming for renewal in 2025. Interest rates remains high for Credit, and projected increases in costs of living next year... this "shaky last leg" feeling is pretty intense.
@nlpchannel Not sure where you are looking but interest is low, inflation is at 1.9%. Prices remain high due to Putin's wars, supply chain failures around the world, climate change in the form of unpredictable weather/large storms....etc.
Thanks guys. Nice to have a one-stop fiscal conservative update. Wish the rest of the factions - deep greens, greenwashers, social conservatives, identity operatives, social democrats, old marxists, libertarians, transnationalists, techno-utopians and so on would meet your standards.
''just let me keep my car and driver for a few more weeks.'''
And that, in one sharp quip, is why Canada has become just a sad, expensive, irrelevant joke.
Trudeau tried a Doug Ford tactic - throw a bunch of cash at the voters and hope like hell.
My guess is that Trudeau must have promised her that he would step aside in her favour- and then reneged. Said he was staying. Leading to this.
Or the event was created to give her distance from his unpopularity so throwing her hat in the ring may be more likely to succed. Kamala seemed to close to Joe.
How was fiscal stimulus - that was one single reason for the economy avoiding the Great Depression 2.0 - a mistake?
Now, was this fiscal stimulus the main reason for inflation? Not according to Bay Street economists or the Bank of Canada.
Oh well, Frum is venturing outside of his area of expertise, and it's obvious.
I completely agree with Frum about the "standard track" and "emergency track" in dealing with American administrations generally and Trump in particular. Small concessions, allies in federal and state positions and keep the retaliation to a minimum. Our instinct in the face of Trump's idiocy is to strike back but as a small, much weaker player we don't have that luxury. In fact, some of the "concessions" - stronger border security, more defence spending, etc. - may actually be good for Canada.
Not only good, critically needed. The so called idiocy may soon come to be viewed as common sense.
The NDP should not have the right to make this country put up with Trudeau, vote now.
Well kids the question is. Pierre gonna fight or a fall in line boot licker to the evil orange pumpkin 🎃 🤔

At about halfway through this interesting conversation, I’m waiting for you two to talk about Poilievre’s position in all this. Ah-ha! No mention of PP the whole way through! Interesting!! I don’t think PP knows what he’s gonna do whereas Trudeau does-and has some control over how it’s gonna go down. Advantage JT!
Unstable governance can’t keep secrets? For the last year, whatever Truedeau’s gonna do remains a secret-we know what he’s probably gonna do, but the timing, granted losing degrees of freedom if one discounts that JT might have had a plan to depart in the least propitious way for PP ever since last year, is not known. And timing is critical if the plan-the likely plan-is to have a Liberal leadership convention and ride the momentum until the Liberals are ready to pull the pin. Advantage Liberals!
The difference between JT proroguing and Harper’s is that Harper left a bill on the table which should have been voted on (which of course his minority was afraid to and so fomented a constitutional crisis by bullying the GG into improperly granting a prorogation) whereas the Liberals do not have a bill on the table so prorogation does not depend on Harper’s outrageous bullying of the Queen’s representative precedent.
