Inherited my dad’s Gen 3 G17.. a great gun. He was a 30yr retired MGYSGT (USMC) and that was the gun he kept in his nightstand until he passed at the good age of 87. Boy, do I miss him. First time gun owner and I purchased my first gun last week and picking it up Tuesday! I am so excited for this new hobby and can’t wait to learn more. G17 is the one I went with and glad to hear good things about it 🙌🏽
I think you made a great choice. A lot of people go for smaller framed handguns because the larger ones can seem intimidating. What a lot of new gun owners don’t get is that those smaller ones are snappier due to the shorter barrel and shorter grip leaving you with very little to grasp on to. Good luck with your new gun and new found hobby. My first recommendation to any person just getting started is to learn to field strip it, clean it and oil it. Learn how things work internally as this will translate to knowledge at the range should any malfunctions pop up. Secondly, seek training and never stop (regardless of the frequency). Even if it’s every 6 months, learn something new from someone else and put it into practice. Thirdly, spread the word. Get other friends and family involved in the hobby. I believe that it has something to do with polymer on polymer vs polymer on steel. Due to the polymer grip used on Glocks, I could see premature wearing on the grip if steel mags were used. And then obviously they started steel lining them to keep the polymer mags from bulging/cracking.
I would recommend the 17 or the 19 as a beginner gun as they are both good size frames. A lot of people gravitate towards the smaller guns thinking they are tiny and don’t recoil much or just because they are small they must be easier to handle, both are untrue if you did not know.
