As he's coming to the goal area, one of his teammates makes a diagonal right-to-left screen sprint across the area and drags one of the centerbacks with him, who thinks he might get the pass. When I saw the lineup of Arg, I was relieved. Scaloni knew Croatia was a midfield powerhouse, and to counter it the only way is to overload the midfield so the supply to attack gets cut. Also even after 2 goal lead they kept attacking. This shows mature management from Scaloni.

Croatia had 61% possession of the ball but Argentina won 3-0. As a longtime Barça & Lionel Messi fan, i don't care how they get it done as long as they win the final I'll be ecstatic. Lionel Messi was already the G.O.A.T. but winning the FIFA WC would be the icing on the cake of his career. Vamos Albiceleste🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Having more procession doesn't mean they played better. Argentina played for a counter attack 80% of the time. They scored two of their goals by doing it.
It was 100% a penalty. That’s a foul anywhere else on the pitch, and therefore a penalty. Perfection from Messi too. Also why does that graphic at 21:10 leave out the Finalissima, in which Messi got two assists?
Argentina will not going to lose, after they went through 4 years ago. The whole needs to get behind Argentina to suceed. And Messi is a smart worker, why would he run at his age ? He save his energy when he needed.
It was a relief to see that Scaloni learned from his mistakes from the last two matches - playing park the bus after a two goal lead. He did gave me a start when he substituted Lisandro in and I thought here we go once more for the heart attack but they kept their offence going and that meant that the game was going to be finished in a clean manner.
It LOOKED easy. What it actually was, is a thorough shutting down of Croatia's play. They simply had no way through. To put this down to Messi's enduring brilliance or Alvarez's luck is to not understand team work.
Take it with a grain of salt. People in the UK understand a lot about the game they gave us, but nothing about the midfield. They actually think it has borders..
Crotia had no way through on anyone. They don't know how to create opportunities that result in shots on goal. Pass allmday and possess all day, but if you don't shhot on goal , you lose.
Croatian here...still not sure if that was penalty which practically turned the game...but that doesn't justify the fact we had no shots on the target for full 70 minutes. That alone doesn't qualify us to advance to the final and so, I must congratulate Argentina. And Messi...I hope he wins the cup, but wether he succeeds in that or not it won't change my mind that he's the best footballer I have ever seen...by far.
What’s Frank on about? That was a clear penalty, yes the goalkeeper wasn’t intentionally trying to make contact with Alvarez, but that’s football. He prevented a goal scoring opportunity, which Alvarez could’ve scored if he wasn’t tackled.
Well they never realise the fact that coratia did not look good because Argentina did not allow them to do so!!.. Some defensive work was at the top level as well. And then the magic as usual from the magic man.!!
Good point! Ppl don’t seem to understand that Argentina works so well as a team in the midfield and defence area. They really crowd the dangerous areas at the back at crucial times which nullifies the risk.
The only reason we’re talking about if it’s a penalty is because it’s Argentina and people just don’t want Messi to lift all the trophies at the World Cup. Right now he’s in contention for the golden boot, the golden ball, and the World Cup trophy itself. That’s a clear penalty, it doesn’t matter if it was “intentional.” If I slide tackle and try to clear the ball but miss it and hit the opponent, it’s a penalty. Why are we subjecting ourselves to this?
He will, I dreamt last week we beat France in the finals 2-1 and won the World Cup,I woke up saying to myself and was wondering if it was a vision, it will happen, I believe it will
Yea when Argentina won the game against Netherlands and I saw the blue and white celebrating I had dejavue of them winning the cup. I agree they are winning. Plus they haven’t even used Dimaria yet and I’m pretty sure lautaro has his confidence back after getting the winning penalty against Netherlands. France only have mbappe and a mediocre giroud
Exactly! Steve also gave the same example. Imagine the same situation happening outside the Box. It’s a clear foul. I think the only reason that foul raised doubts about its legitimacy was because it was a poor finishing touch by Alvarez. One gets carried away when u consider it. And that’s the reason some pundits find it hard to accept it as a foul.
Messi is a master at counting strides, Stevie! That is why he is able to pass that way, with or without looking. That is not a stroke of luck! That is masterful!
Messi holding his hamstring and walking around is mind games 😂😂, if you follow his around aimlessly after a minute or two on the field it would be ridiculous so often times the defenders forget about him and then Messi moment the next , The Goat

Penalty for me without question. And a yellow card as well. Good call from ref. Ref could have easily gave a handball for the Croatian defender cheekingly sticking his arm out even though he doesn't actually stick his arm out to block the ball. That was one of the most suttle things I've seen a player do and yet know what he was doing when his arm ever so slightly went towards the ball. I wouldn't have had a problem with a handball being called their
@@asnark7115 there was no play made for the ball by the keeper. Just because the goalkeeper had a spot doesn’t give him the excuse of clashing the player when there is a % chance that the ball is on target and the player can still take the shot. Totally a penalty.

Lol you know nothing about football if you think that's a penalty. Sometimes the players who run into gk like that get a yellow cause it could also be a foul for gk since he was there first
You obviously didn't watch the game. Alvarez flicked it to much on the side and then ran into Livakovic not to mention that one of the Croatian defenders is already running behind Livakovic and would have gotten to the ball before Alvarez. So definitely not a penalty.
@@stansmith5610 Name another example of a keeper taking out a defender point blank on the 8 without touching the ball, and the ref didn't call a PK. That's what you are missing. The keeper has to actually touch the ball for it to go in the keeper's favor. There. I spoke to you as anybody would speak to a pet or a small child. Don't say we didn't try to politely help you with your confusion.
It was a penalty. The keeper wanted to block Alvarez to avoid being dribbled. You can tell by looking at the second goal, the keeper didn't seek contact.
The keeper moved forward to block the shot, and I repeat, SHOT from Alvarez, making all parts his body big, upper and lower. And when Alvarez mishits it, he moves toward the ball after it's going to be played by Croatian defenders and hits the keeper. Its not a pen for me, but the more important bit is that it's in no way clear cut, and VAR should've been involved.
It was a clear penalty in any league. It was a clean 3 - 0. The difference in this game was that Argentina read Croatia game mode. Argentina allowed Croatia possess the ball in the midfield ( see Croatia ball possession it was far more than Argentina ) but Argentina put a great defense and took advantage of its stickers.
There is a big difference between how Messi fanboys and Argentine football fans are viewing this world cup campaign. The whole Argentine side deserves credit. Messi obviously stands out but the defence, midfield and strikers all have done so well and shown so much resilience. And no team can progress deep in a knockout tournament without some luck. Argentina have had that as well.
Coratia looked unmotivated after the ref didn't give them the corner before the pk and then gifted argentina the pk. That's when they realized the ref wasn't gonna let argentina loose
That might change going into the 2nd half of season, haaland is big and the thing that will allow Alvarez to succeed at city is he plays really similar to aguero, I’m not too worried about him tbh, he’ll show his talent whenever he gets the chance
I was actually watching the analysis from former referee. No way that's a penalty. This ref Orsato is 20m behind the ball at the moment and from his perspective it looks like a penalty because he is way behind in line with Alvarez and Livakovic. He should be at that moment from the side watching the action then he would se what Shaka and Frank are explaining. Alvarez flicked the ball to the side and ran into Livakovic. So if anything it should be foul from Alvarez. What nobody is talking about ref had a Achilles surgery and was actually slow to position himself in every critical situation. Not to mention that he didn't see that it should be a corner for Croatia prior to the play that translated into a dubious penalty. What I don't understand why VAR didn't signal him to at least watch the situation in slow motion. Then he would have whole different perspective. But we saw on this tournament even with VAR still getting the wrong decision. For example Scezny penalty. I think it's ludicrous what the refs are calling on this tournament and this was the defining moment that changed the whole momentum of the game in Argentina favor. Why do we have all this technology in football today if we don't use it properly. Ludicrous
@@messiisapig2478 how are they helped boy.Only one that wasn’t a penalty and that’s vs Poland. Argentina made it to the final by playing their hearts out and beating team by team. Everyone crying “rigged” but I guess Saudi Arabia and Netherlands were “rigged” games lmao. Argentina suffered this World Cup if it was rigged they would be breezing and beating everyone 5-0
The best thing Argentina did in this game is they didn't sit back after getting the goal advantage. They kept pressing higher up the pitch and which prevented croatia firing crosses into the box.
Messi have brought many of us joy . Young and Old,even those who hate him he give them something to talk about. We All know that he is special and is truly deserve something special for all that he have given us . from the bottom of my heart I just want to say thank you Messi.
Well, when Messi is in the team and scores a spectacular goal, spotlight shifts to him but that Alvarez goal was equally good. Yes that first ricochet was lucky but the second one i felt was due to his quick feet and splendid movement in the box from molena which created the required space. Often players of Argentina don't get the due credit in this tournament the way they have maximised the current Messi version.
Yeah, clear pen - this is a ridiculous debate. If you freeze frame it, Alvarez was close to the GK, and the GK's legs were shoulder-width. The GK stuck his right leg WAY out, which is exactly what Alvarez collided with as he was trying to run around him and make a play on the ball. If the GK didn't stick his leg out or if Alvarez collided directly into the GK's body, it's not a pen, because he roughly held his position. Also had Alvarez blazed a shot with no possibility of making a play on the ball, it's not a pen. I've seen tons of silly pens where the defender sticks his leg out a bit trying to get the ball, and the attacking player drags his leg to get some contact. A lot of times, although inside the box, they are VERY unlikely to score from the position they were in. Yet, there's never any debate about those pens. Here the GK stuck his leg WAY out at the last minute, there was no way for Alvarez to avoid it, and Alvarez had an excellent chance at a goal if he got around the GK clean.
Messi is too unpredictable right now. He has been more active 2nd half of matches , probably conserving energy due to his age and he knows he can do more damage to a fatigued opponent
Wrong. Alvarez wouldn't score because he flicked the ball to much on the side and Croatian defender was already behind Livakovic and would have close on the ball before Alvarez got to it
@@markomeker7789 There's a chance Alvarez wouldn't have recovered it, there's a chance he would have, there's a chance the defender would have bottled it like Croatia's defenders kept getting beaten all night long. Since the keeper swept his legs, though, you can only guess. The only thing wrong with that call is that there didn't have to be a yellow.
Poor journalism, they only talk about Messi because it's what sells. They try to diminish any other aspects of Argentina's game. They forgot to mention that the defense has been strong throughout the tournament. Both left and right backs positions have been quite instrumental to the team's game. The same applies to the three CBs. Alvarez had ran what Messi doesn't throughout the entire tournament, same as McAlister and Enzo, who weren't starters before the tournament started. De Paul has gone from bad to solid, and it's after Messi, the other leader that keeps the team together. Emi Martinez had outstanding performances, especially during penalties shootouts.
Totally agree on AR's solid defence - they really took it to heart from the Saudi and Netherland games and did not lossen up even they were ahead. Great game from a great team.
Tbh they haven’t been tested, although I say that the few times they have been they were brilliant aside from the Netherlands brace. The attacks they’ve face so far is not a world class attack that’s why
what are you talking about. It’s just common sense they have a good defense but everytime they were tested like Saudi Arabia match and Netherlands they conceded. Croatia hardly even tried taking a shot even when they were in position to and same as Poland the rare times they got in a position to shoot. I didn’t say their defense is bad I just said they haven’t faced a true attack all tournament that doesn’t even imply they’d fail when they do 🤦🏽♂️ it’s just a fact
@@limaims6290 They will never be satisfied because they are bitter fangirls, don't waste your time. Because Argentina is getting all the calls and yet they are crying about the refs all the time. How De Paul and Paredes have gotten away with so many fouls without any yellow card is ridiculous.
Man Alvarez is so underrated, its not just about his goals or his finishing abilities. But his positioning is so good. He is always in the good position.
its sad to see grown men call Messi’s incredible passing as just pure luck. First against, netherlands. Now, against croatia….Messi’s been doing it all tournament, the players havent been converting those opportunities efficiently
I think Croatia started making more and more mistakes because they were deflated as their game plan was probably to either go 1-0 or go 0-0 the entire 90 and then go from there because Argentina would then be very frustrated. Going down 1-0 from a penalty due to a foul on your keeper, the player who was keeping you in all the knockout matches, was probably the worst way to concede.
Messi and the team need to win the world cup to prove to Europe that Latin American teams too can compete with Europe.I don't like it when Mbappe underestimate Latin American teams but who knows, let's prove it on the pitch I know they have better team.
It really feels like there's a bias against Latin American/African teams, rather than giving credit to teams beating European giants there's this emphasis on the mistakes of European teams rather than on the merit of the Non-European teams. As if to say, teams like Belgium/Germany can only lose if they mess up rather than the reality that they are actually outmatched by teams that are better. This game was an absolute masterclass by Argentina, amazing control by Alvarez at full speed to score the second goal, first goal was obviously a penalty, almost can't believe it's being debated. And then Messi's genius for the 3rd. And yet the focus is on Croatia shortcomings and whether it was a penalty.

Well, when Messi is in the team and scores a spectacular goal, spotlight shifts to him but that Alvarez goal was equally good. Often players of Argentina don't get the due credit in this tournament the way they have maximised the current Messi version.
Stevie is spot on with his analysis of the penalty. Lol, why is it being questioned.
