    I have worked on various waste oil heaters over the years and this is a good design with only a few changes I would make.
    The first is the open drip feed of the fuel oil will have a gas backflow. You can use a pressure feed via an aircompressor and have a sealed feed.
    The second is the addition of water/steam injection. The addition of steam provides the extra oxygen to break apart the long chain oil components more readily and helps keep the burner chamber clean. This is done in many coal/coke fired furnaces and the chemistry works here too.
    Thank you for this instructional video. Ignore the ignorant comments. Well done.

      @@targetdreamer257 When I was a kid 50 years ago we had the simplest version of an old oil burner possible but it was very effective, the secret is to get it as hot as possible so the fumes coming of the old oil ignite, ours consisted of a stack of fire bricks with a copper dish set inside them, above it was an oil drum with a tap (valve) on it, you had to heat the copper dish until it was red hot with a propane burner then open the tap to drip the oil onto the red hot dish getting the flow right was the most important aspect off getting it to work right, to little oil and it would just vaporise, to much would cool the dish down and it would smoke.

      @@targetdreamer257 Fuel plus air and fire. Oil is just a longer chain hydrocarbon so it burns like any other hydrocarbon. The fan forces extra air into the chamber to burn the oil at a higher temperature, higher temperature reduces the amount of fuel that's wasted. I agree that adding steam in smart for multiple reasons, one, water has a very high heat capacity and it is a much better thermal conductor than just regular air. Adding water to the system will definitely help keep the unit clean and help warm up a room faster.

    Very cool, the Buick Dealership
    I worked at used a waste oil
    heater to warm the shop in the
    winter, all of the used oil and gasoline from oil and fuel filter
    changes went into a 100 gallon tank thru the spring and summer and was full by winter!! At the start of winter we would clean the burner and light it, with the 10 overhead doors being opened thru the day to bring cars in and out of the shop it was a cheap way to heat!!!

      I worked for a towing company/scrap yard and they used a waste oil furnace for the shop. It worked quite well. It did have some problems occasionally. I went in on a Saturday to find the whole shop filled with smoke cause the heat exchanger cracked. It was missing paint off the side of the furnace housing because it got oil with too much gasoline in it one time and it got extremely hot.

Yes waste oil heating water costs extremely low and to make one directly is not worth much money and waste oil is something that is almost available right? Yes when done correctly it has a very high temperature of up to 700 degrees Celsius and there is no black smoke so when it enters the air when the temperature is high when it is chemically it will burn completely creating a blue flame like gas Thank you for giving us positive words do you have any suggestions for us to do better Please let us know We will improve the product further to contribute to bringing more value and benefits to audiences around the world Thank you

    Thank you so much for making this video. This is the first one that I actually saw and understood how you made it. All the other ones require you to have 15 different pieces and when it comes to the burner itself most RUclipsrs would say I don't need to show you how to build this there's enough videos out there to show you that.
    I can tell you for a fact that this was the easiest way I ever saw someone do this and understood it. On my own I don't have the capability of thinking of how to design something. I have always been able to do things as long as there's directions for the parts in front of me to do it. On my own over 40 years ago I decided to start fixing my own car. Bought a repair manual for that car as they say the rest is history. Never became a professional mechanic I just enjoy it and helping family and friends when they need it done.

    What inspires me is HOW the film is structured:
    Each construction phase is...
    ...exactly without words, but with fantastically expressive images.
    ... with all the necessary measurements for the work step
    ... It was shown exactly HOW measurements were taken to avoid measuring errors.
    ... Each step was shown so precisely that it was self-explanatory. A real alternative to the exaggerated ‘babble’ that is common on some channels here
    ... Anyone with a basic knowledge of metalworking and basic welding skills will have assembled one of these on a rainy afternoon.
    ... Apart from a few minor details, which are perhaps handled differently in different countries, the individual work steps were carried out in an almost school-like manner, perhaps for a school project at a vocational school somewhere in the world?
    All that's missing now is a technical sketch!!!

I love the idea of adding a technical sketch, and I’ll definitely consider that for future videos! It would be great to make the process even clearer for those who want to dive deeper. The smell was bad when I used old diesel so I mixed the diesel with camphor oil, A 4 to 1 mix of camphor/diesel seemed to overcome the bad oil smell. I thought I would try it with a bit of 10/30 oil but had none available so I went out to the driveway and drained the car planning to use only a bit then replace it after my tests. Half an hour later my wife called from downtown saying something was wrong with the car. I think I will just play ignorant on this one and say nothing.

    I seldom see any concern expressed about the heavy metal contamination in waste oil when burned. There is a great centerfugal oil extraction method that removes some of it but the only way I can imagine to be really sure is to "crack" it all over again and of course that takes quite a bit of heat too. How can you win?

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  3 дня назад +3

      You raise an important concern regarding the heavy metal contamination in waste oil. When burning waste oil, especially from automotive or industrial sources, it can contain a variety of harmful contaminants, including heavy metals (like lead, cadmium, and chromium), as well as other toxic byproducts that may be released into the air when burned.
      While centrifugal oil extraction can help remove some contaminants by separating out solid particles and some heavier impurities, it doesn't fully address the issue of hazardous metals that may still be present in the oil. To fully eliminate these contaminants, you would need a more complex process, such as "cracking" or refining the oil back to a purer state, which would require significant heat and specialized equipment. This process, however, is energy-intensive and costly, which could make it impractical for most DIY or home heating systems.
      To reduce the risks of burning waste oil, here are some possible solutions:
      Filtration: Advanced filtration systems could help remove larger contaminants, but they won't fully eliminate heavy metals or some of the finer impurities. Multi-stage filtration, combining mechanical, chemical, and carbon filters, can improve oil purity, but the risk of heavy metals remains.
      Exhaust Scrubbing: Installing a scrubber or an afterburner system in the exhaust could help trap or neutralize harmful emissions, including particulate matter and toxic fumes. This would help reduce the impact of burning contaminated oil on air quality.
      Pre-Treatment of the Oil: If you plan to burn waste oil regularly, you could look into oil refining or cracking methods that break down the contaminants before combustion. This might involve heating the oil in controlled conditions, but again, it would require a lot of energy and specialized equipment.
      Monitoring and Testing: Periodically testing the oil for contaminant levels (especially heavy metals) could help you understand its quality and whether it's safe to burn. You could also monitor the emissions to ensure they stay within safe levels.
      In summary, while it is possible to burn waste oil, doing so safely requires a multi-step approach to reduce contamination. The best way to win is to balance efficiency, safety, and environmental impact. Using clean or filtered oil, or even considering alternative fuels, could be an effective compromise for home heating systems.

    • @rustylugnut755
      @rustylugnut755 3 дня назад +1

      @@lmtnThe combustion of used motor vehicle oils does entail the problem of heavy metals. Many heavy metals can be filtered out via fiber filtration and centrifuge equipment as I have at my shop. On the exhaust end, you can use the tendency of heavy metals to form sulfides to create a reactive filter - but this is outside the capability of a home shop. A cooling tower with soot traps might be more feasible if visibility is not an issue.

    I built a variation that used no power. Basically I had 4" exhaust pipe with a heater box in the middle. At the bottom I had 1/4" pipe wrapped a few inches from the bottom. Fuel was supplied through this pipe from a tank above regulated by a valve. At the bottom was a catcher basin made with a 5" or 6" section of exhaust pipe. Dripping a bit of fuel in the catcher and lighting it would heat the 1/4" tube wrapped around the 4" pipe. This would create a "steam" jet aimed in the center of the 4" pipe creating an updraft. The box above had baffles inside to direct the heat to it shell. The exhaust out the top of the box could come out the side giving you a hot plate. All the fumes were outside and it was smokeless. The box would get red hot and heat us out of the room. Enclosing the box with an outer box you could vent the air where you want, with or without a fan. I designed this after looking at smudge pots people near me were using. They were very smokey and unregulated. I think mine used far less fuel for the same heat.

    on first glance I think I prefer the design of the common diesel heaters sold on the likes of amazon (the red plastic case rectangular ones for $90 sold for RVs) purely because of the safety features built in and the fact that the combusted output is not being vented into the room, just air that has been heated by convection from the heater chamber walls, but i'm open to being persuaded that the burn is "clean enough" in this setup to not introduce particulates that would not be healthy. How is the hot air coming from the furnace and the air vents kept clean? There doesn't appear to be any filtration? Is this safe to use in a home purely based on the idea of extrem temperature combustion theory or is it really just a good quick and dirty solution for heating your workshop with good ventilation?

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  12 часов назад

      You raise valid points! Diesel heaters like the ones you mentioned have built-in safety features and vent combustion gases outside. In contrast, this setup relies on high-temperature combustion for cleaner burning, but proper ventilation is essential. It’s safer for workshops, but caution is needed when using it in a home without proper filtration and air management.

    I totally agree with a post further down. It’s consuming oxygen and the fumes it’s producing. This should only be used in a well ventilated area or outside. The flame 🔥 color is correct for an oil / waste oil burner. I had a commercial build waste oil furnace in my garage. I loved it basically free heat other than the tiny bit of electricity ⚡️ for the fan and tiny pump for the oil. It was 60,000 BTUs on a continuous run no thermostat. Go out start it , have breakfast and then the garage would be starting to warm up. I did a lot of driving and a lot of oil changes, so it worked out perfectly. The furnace would burn 1/2 gallons per hour or roughly 2.7 liters.

    • @Absaalookemensch
      @Absaalookemensch 3 дня назад +2

      That's a minimum of 250 gallons per winter. That would be over 20 oil changes on a semi engine. It would take several semis annual oil changes to supply one such heater.

      Yes, thank you for watching our video and leaving a comment. I don't understand what you mean, but a stove like this burns at a temperature of about 400 degrees Celsius, then 1 liter of waste oil will last about 4 to 5 hours. If it's good at 700 degrees Celsius, then 1 liter of oil will burn within two hours, which is what you usually do. Wish you a happy weekend. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below. Thank you.
