Hi Andrew - this was a great synthesis of the human spirit and mind. I really appreciate your work and the interview; Dr. James summarizes in an objective way the journey of the human soul, it is a great explanation of the soul through the current 2024 lenses of science and society. The practice of the Orthodox Christian religion, the oldest Christian religion, fills in the gaps and missing questions. Both of you are illuminated, but there is a higher step, when you seek the divinity and divinity illuminates you and you get the certainty of life after death and a lot more. @hubermanlab This might be the wisest guest you've ever had on your podcast. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to listen and learn from his wisdom. It's an honor, and it truly showcases the "great side" of the Internet.
"so much richness to take in" is what Andrew said at the end! It's already a lot to take in and let it spill into life, thru' us, as beautifully put by Dr. Hollis
A co-worker once told me, "We all need to be assigned a therapist right out of the womb." To which I would now add, "And that therapist should be Dr. James Hollis." This is one of the most empowering, fulfilling, insightful, & practical conversations I've heard on a podcast. I've immediately looked up his books & lectures. Thank You, Dr. Hollis, for sharing your encompassing understanding & wisdom with us!
Wow, James Hollis knows what it means to live a life. Humility, wisdom and failures. Beautiful conversation. This is what makes internet beautiful. Cheers from Spain.
James Hollis is a straight-up grown @ss Man. Neither puffing nor fawning, neither bullying nor bowing… a Man who has an unapologetic abundance of Self and Life. He gets it, which is so rare and refreshing in today’s world.
Dr. Huberman, your discussions make me think deep. You are a healer. Please don’t ever stop your work. It’s beautiful, thoughtful, selfless and profound. Your words ring in my head many, many hours after I have listened to you. Isn’t that the point of what you do? Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Well said. I’m thankful to have found him and tell everyone I know about the unbelievable value his podcasts offer. He and his guests have helped me understand myself better, and when you know better, you do better.
AH: It's almost as if one needs to really understand their story but then be able to depart from that story. JH: One has to have a larger story than what happened to you. These 2 hours and 40 minutes were eye opening to me. Truly a full picture of things I needed in my life right now, in a structured, empathic way. I will be forever grateful for your work, Dr. H. I can't believe I missed this episode. Thank you
I am in awe. What a wonderful conversation. I will relisten, take notes and action. I truly hope this reaches millions and inspire them to create a better life. ❤
To breeze through an almost 3 hr podcast, and crave more, says something. My biggest takeaway was the idea that something did indeed shift in me when I passed 35, and I am not alone in that internal search. I’m going to download Dr. James Hollis’s book on audible’ “Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life.” It is included in the audible membership, if anyone else is interested. Thanks, Dr. Huberman for another fabulous podcast.
From the moment you began this podcast, I have hoped endlessly that Dr. Hollis would come on. When you divulged that you'd traveled to a guest, I thought, "please be Dr. Hollis". Not sure of why this pairing of you two is so important to me, but here we are! Can you imagine my elation this morning about this episode?! Thank you for this and thank you to infinity to Dr. Hollis. May this be only the first of his appearances with you. Even more, may this episode give his work a wider, larger audience. Our world needs it!
This is one of my favorite episodes thus far… I want to listen again and take good notes as well. Listening was such a gentle reorientation and re-centering experience. I feel called both upward and inward. Thank you so much for introducing us to Dr. Hollis - I’m excited to continue learning from him. Please pass on our gratitude!
Thank you Andrew Huberman for opening up such a valuable conversation. "I'm accountable for what's spilling into the world through me". I'm also working on lightening the burden on my future children by living with as much courage as I can mobilize and as much integrity as I can manage ❤
I’ve listened to thousands of podcasts. This episode is up there with the most impactful and important ones. Brilliant work. Dr Hollis is an amazing intellect
Dear Dr Huberman, I just finished the book “where ever you go, you are there” Jon Kabrt Zinn , thank you for this recommendation! I am grateful for your out put. Your work with this podcast is a source of inspiration. I appreciate you. God bless you.
Did you know Jon Kabot Zinn is not only an prominent medical professor, but also an ordained Roshi by Thich Nhat Haun himself MBSR was a collaboration between them. Young conceived his archetype’s from studying the Buddhist Archetype’s ( Bodhisattva’s)
What a persona! In another recent podcast you quoted Dr. Hollis: "Look inside yourself for something positive every day when you wake up.". It is something I now do every morning. After that, I jog and do cold therapy. Sometimes finding something positive inside of you is extremely difficult if you have suffered from complex trauma, but I do this practice every morning. Thanks a lot.
This is a life changing interview. I am grateful it found me at the right time, when I could "understand" and appreciate the invaluable insights. Thank you Andrew and Dr Hollis.
These kinds of discussions that delve deep into matters of the mind and spirit are way too underrated. The guest doctor talks with such clarity and eloquence about these matters that it really helps the listener contemplate along with. Truly one if the best episodes yet in my opinion. A lot of people are suffering from their vices, weaknesses, misperceptions, unconscious scripts, etc. So many folks feel powerless to their emotions and maladaptations. It's difficult work to undo and unravel it all, especially without access to deeply skilled and caring therapists.
Thank you so much for this! Both Dr. James Hollis and Huberman! I literally cried while listening, and felt life is just so precious! We're only here for a short time, may we all cherish it and live a good life.
I loved how Dr. Huberman managed to conduct the conversation on the interviewee's terms rather than imposing neuroscience on him, giving him time for long answers on complex topics and making the interview relevant to everyone. It's a great episode, thank you.
after listenting to the podcast for 2 years now . i can say that it has completely changed my lifestye and life . (even as a teenager ) . you are a true life saver Dr Huberman .
The main thing is that it is mentally supporting/helping people with info that when applied brings positive change and thats the thing that only matters. Whether pseudoscience or not.
This is the essence: this is the best podcast ever done by Huberman. Amazing, marvellous-listen with an open mouth. I have been watching it five or six times since uploading, and still, a new insight arises. Speechless, literally speechless.
As someone who's read and studied Jung for the last decade, and just in the last year began talking to a Jungian analyst, I am STOKED. It's the best form(that I've found) of self discovery, and helped my life immensely.
how did he help? did you resolve everything instantly? i am 46, i did not see anybody in the world found any meaning at the end of the life, did this guy find any or you?
Wow, I am surprised to see James Hollis on this podcast. It's like a meeting of different worlds. Mr James Hollis is a legend, an elder, and a man of wmbodied wisdom. Thank you, Dr. Hubernan, for laying down a bridge between Wisdom and Science.
A friend recommended your podcast several years ago, and I’ve enjoyed listening to them ever since. But this episode brings you to a new level. And I have had to replay it three times, not because it is hard to understand, but because what has been said is so meaningful! I can’t wait to read Dr. Holiss’ books! Thank you!
"We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life but instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life, daily and hourly... Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it consistently sets for each individual. " ~Viktor E. Frankl
I can’t stop applauding & appreciate you speaking slower as that’s been challenging for me. This man is a treasure & you Dr H. are a gift to humanity for exposing us to all these meaningful individuals and continuous learning!
I've watched this through 3 times now and I think this might be my favorite RUclips video of all time, thank you for bringing James Hollis to my attention Dr. Huberman.
Thanks for this Andrew and team. I've been following Hollis for about 8 years now and his books have been such an immense help, helping me get through a difficult mid life transition in my mid 30s. I'm a therapist myself and draw greatly on his work in so many areas of my practice. I've long hoped he would become more popular, the world really needs his work.
This was amazing. I listened and watched over 2 day to take it in. I wish everyone could watch this. It can benefit us all. Thank you for having Dr. Hollis on and asking the questions. With todays social media and fast content I fear many of younger generations won't take that time. Please take the time!
I only listened to this podcast. I expected this guy to be in his 40's-50's. I am absolute taken back that he is 84!!! What an absolute inspiration this man is.
Thank you, Brother Huberman. Doc Hollis was presented to me via Fr Richard Rohr a few years back while traveling with Odysseus in need of planting my oar. Studying his works through his books and gracious, generous web talks are priceless gifts orchestrated from something far greater than I. Been a pleasure listening to your sensitive and vulnerable insights and questions. All hail Doc Hollis.
I got hit by psychosis and depression at the beginning of my twenties. It took me some time to heal and align to the purpose of my soul. I had to let go of ego's expectations and find my natural flow. Still work to do but existential suffering is now taken care of and I don't question anymore all the meaning when something challenging happens. Summarizing my experience i would say that i had to let go of my mind and use a deeper wisdom based on trust and listening. I suggest that everybody cultivates this side of them in order to be more flexible and ready in the face of lifes hard and unexpected challenges, this offers a healthy coping mechanism and adaptation strategy, that you can apply to anything in life... so it is worth trying. I hope i will start sharing more in the future as i mature this vision .. bye from italy
One of the most enriching podcast topics and experience sharing sessions I've encountered, thank you Andrew and Dr. James for this enlightening discussion. It's something everyone should definitely listen to, taking time to introspect periodically, no matter their current life stage and condition. Moving forward, I will certainly integrate the "Shut Up, Suit Up, Show Up" mantra into my routine after each meditation session.
“Why am I here and in service to what? What was that in service to inside of me. The appointment with your life; do you keep it or do you not keep the appointment? Symptoms…why have they come? What are they asking of me? Does it enlarge me or does it diminish me.” Brilliant! Thank you for bringing this.

Dr Hollis is so eloquent and such a gifted speaker. I wasn't aware of him until today. Thanks for bringing him to my attention Andrew.
Agree, thanks!
pick up his incredible book Living an examined life
Wow, James Hollis knows what it means to live a life.
A grown what? self-reflection is necessary.
Well said.
grown @ss man 🤣🤣
Absolutely 100%
As an @ss man not fully grown, I concur
Sitting here listening to him and in tears from just how much I have to unpack in my own life...I envy those who have therapy sessions with him
yeah this one hit hard bruh
Plus he's very handsome which is an added bonus 😍
AH: It's almost as if one needs to really understand their story but then be able to depart from that story.
JH: One has to have a larger story than what happened to you.
These 2 hours and 40 minutes were eye opening to me. Truly a full picture of things I needed in my life right now, in a structured, empathic way. I will be forever grateful for your work, Dr. H. I can't believe I missed this episode.
Thank you
Whoever reading this, don't give up. Good things are on the way.
Amen bro
Thanks , sometimes we need this message.
Yessir
Thanks, love! XOX!
You don't know that but thanks
Dr. Hollis changed my life. I'm from Puerto Rico, I've never met him, but his books found their way into my world and I was never the same again.
Hola boricua 🫶🏼
@@Tali.Boricua Saludos fellow boricua! :)
Can you recommend which book of his to start with?
My introduction to Dr Hollis… can’t have enough… I am listening again…❤
As all the people here I love James Hollis, and I'm delighted with all the comments, there is a hope 😊
Love how you put your experience into words
Thank you Andrew Huberman for opening up such a valuable conversation. "I'm accountable for what's spilling into the world through me". I'm also working on lightening the burden on my future children by living with as much courage as I can mobilize and as much integrity as I can manage ❤
I have no words. This episode is life changing. Thank you Dr Hollis and Andrew
So happy to know you’re finding value in it! Dr Hollis is incredible.
Did you know Jon Kabot Zinn is not only an prominent medical professor, but also an ordained Roshi by Thich Nhat Haun himself
MBSR was a collaboration between them.
Young conceived his archetype’s

There is knowledge, and there is wisdom, Hollis has wisdom, there is a fantastic difference. Thank you for this interview.
Amazing episode. Dr Hollis is one of the greatest minds in psychology alive.
Thank you Dr. Andrew for what you do! I love listening to your podcast. This conversation is one of my favorite!!❤
He's as old as my Dad. I miss our many heartfelt discussions. Thank you for your wisdom, Dr. Hollis.
🙏
I loved how Dr. Huberman managed to conduct the conversation on the interviewee's terms rather than imposing neuroscience on him, giving him time for long answers on complex topics and making the interview relevant to everyone. It's a great episode, thank you.
That’s how the interview should be conducted. He is there to listen to the man, not the other way around.
after listenting to the podcast for 2 years now . i can say that it has completely changed my lifestye and life . (even as a teenager ) . you are a true life saver Dr Huberman .
More a pseudoscientist
The main thing is that it is mentally supporting/helping people with info that when applied brings positive change and thats the thing that only matters. Whether pseudoscience or not.
You are lucky to have found AH at such a young age🥰
This is the essence: this is the best podcast ever done by Huberman. Amazing, marvellous-listen with an open mouth. I have been watching it five or six times since uploading, and still, a new insight arises. Speechless, literally speechless.
Bro yapping for a good minute and then says "speechless"
As someone who's read and studied Jung for the last decade, and just in the last year began talking to a Jungian analyst, I am STOKED. It's the best form(that I've found) of self discovery, and helped my life immensely.
how did he help? did you resolve everything instantly? i am 46, i did not see anybody in the world found any meaning at the end of the life, did this guy find any or you?
Great episode! I've listened to it 4 times, it is so insightful. Thank you Dr. Hollis and Andrew.
Shut Up. Suit Up. Show Up!
Omg one of the best Huberman podcasts I've ever listened to. Every minute of this conversation is eye opening. Thank you James Hollis, what a gem!
Thank you!
Everyman has a lake of tears and a mountain of anger within him.
I needed to hear that.
"We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life but instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life, daily and hourly... Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it consistently sets for each individual. "
~Viktor E. Frankl
So profound! 62 yr RN. Ego vs despair, been thinking a lot about this and other topics. I will cherish this info and pass it on. Tearful thanks❤
I can’t stop applauding & appreciate you speaking slower as that’s been challenging for me. This man is a treasure & you Dr H. are a gift to humanity for exposing us to all these meaningful individuals and continuous learning!
One of the greatest episode! So simple and so deep. And I realized that it's been a long time I didn't ask myself the right questions. THANK YOU!!!
Best scientific discussion I have ever had the privilege of viewing. Truly life changing. Have never taken this many notes from a podcast before.
I wish the same for the younger generation.
The gospel of St. James Hollis.. he has changed my life
One of the most enriching podcast topics and experience sharing sessions I've encountered, thank you Andrew and Dr.
Does it enlarge me or does it diminish me.”
Brilliant! Thank you for bringing this.
This talk is fantastic! Dr Hollis speaks so eloquently, with such poise and calmness. It's an easy listen despite the complexity of the topics.
Listening to this conversation is definitely a milestone. Thank you Andrew Huberman for giving us the opportunity to expand our life!
As part of the general public, I appreciate your desire & effort to bring zero-cost-to-consumer education about science & science-related tools to us! Many thanks to you & your team for your dedicated work! 🙏

you memorised the adds, and turned it into a poem? perhaps you should consider a career in marketing. seems something your passionate about.
This is one of the most profound conversations I have ever had the previlage of listening to. Its unbeleaveble how little we understand of ourselves and how much we think we know of the other. I will listen to this episode again. Thank you Andrew.
Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself. - RUMI
Dr James Hollis is a treasure, and his books and what he has to say is gold and life changing. Much appreciate this chance to hear him speak. Thank you both, A.H and J.H
Like many other listeners, I found this to be the best Huberman episode ever, and that's saying something. Thank you, James Hollis and Andrew Huberman, for making this happen. It's life-changing.
Thank you...i'm 10 mins in...just the 'You are not what happened to you" has made the outlook on my day so positive. This will be the third time I'll be trying to learn to walk again in my life at the age of 49. ( Run over by a backhoe, broke my back. Then developed Gillian barre syndrome with axonal damage to full quad on life support for a year. Sorry for sob story details ) But had to explain how important it was to "express my gratitude to you both...You help me understand that the amount of effort and 'focus' I'll have to put in, is in no way selfish, as I normally feel that 'effort' should not take away time from putting into my young children...Thank you again (P.S It's not the first time you and your guests have helped me brother) Stay you Andrew Gianni Autralia
Bless you ☮️
Hollis is one of my favourite authors. His books have helped me IMMENSELY! Thank you Mr.Hollis ❤️
One of the best pods I've listened to in a long while, and not just from Huberman, but the podcast world as a whole.
An absolute privilege to be able to listen to such a great discussion!! Very grateful for you both
A Masterclass that I'll be watching over and over again. Just like reading a good book that you reread at different points of life, new profound lessons and truths that will reveal itself when one is ready for it.
I feel so much emotions in me. What an incredible human being Dr. Hollis. It's very rare I comment a video. By the way, I want to deeply greatful to you @ andrew huberman and all your team for the neutrality and rigorous content, provides 0 cost. Each video brings new question, challenge my certainty and question my truth. It's particularly precious in order to take a step back. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart, to bring to humanity, humanity.
What an absolute gift this is, what an absolute gift James Hollis is. He has been such an important guide in my darkest hour and as I move out of my own shadow I feel accompanied by the wisdom of this great man, and Jung's through him.
This is a wonderful discussion . We need to just. keep. living the moment the past is gone and the future does not exist. So enjoy. smelling the roses and loving nature . Watching nature. will relieve pain , heal and nourish the soul. I love Dr James Hollis. super Zen!!
That was the greatest podcast of all time, @Andrew Huberman, and let me mention talking slowly makes you look even more convinced and knowledgeable in what you discuss. Thank you very much for bringing this topic to the scene with such experienced wise expert 🙏🕊️✨
Thank you Andrew for having this wise, compassionate human being at your podcast. It's been an honor to watch you both in this deep and very needed conversation. I'm so grateful, more than words can say!
Wow thank you Dr Huberman for exposing such a great person that can help ALL of us! Wonderful conversation and I’m grateful for us experiencing his influence for our humanity!! Amazing !!!
Hollis is one of the very few of Huberman’s guests who can hold at bay Huberman’s tendency to dominate and interrupt his interviewees with long tangents that pull them off message. Hollis accomplishes this gently and unobtrusively, by spellbinding everyone with his mesmerizing wisdom.
Dr. James Hollis is a true Treasure. What an incredible interview. So many WONDERFUL bits of wisdom within this podcast. Excellent work Dr. Huberman. Thank you !
Impressed by your guest. It is one video I think I come back at from time to time. Thank you for sharing his wisdom.
I am grateful to be able to listen to these amazing podcasts, and yet feel guilty that I live a life of comfort and ease that allows me to contemplate these great topics while other people are struggling to stay alive
Please don’t take it for granted. I was in the same boat until last year when I became one of the >200k tech workers that got laid off. 15 year career over with zero notice. Anything can happen. Wring the most out of your life like it ends tomorrow!
My Father always said "live your life, don't let your life live you". This was an amazing podcast, leaving one a lot to think about.Thank you for sharing.
This was one of the most valuable and impactful podcasts I have heard. Huberman steps back and allows Hollis to share his deep knowledge and profound insights about the psyche, purpose, and the self. There is a wealth of wisdom here that will inform and enrich my life and work as a midlife transition coach. Thank you so very much!
I have not listened to this podcast. But reading all of the responses..I have incredible adversity in my life. A soul survivor of my amazing family. Living with heart failure and going through divorce from someone I thought I knew but who is completely heartless. Life is extremely challenging from all angles. Yet I find a way to live what I call fantastically. I go away to Cornwall frequently on my own and soak in the beauty of the place. Highly recommend. And My hobby is health and wellbeing. My body is my temple. The rewards of that are immeasurable particularly inheriting a dicky heart. I live with great grief and some days I have to just cry it out. But with a satisfying job, good friends. And a very simple humble home life, daily gratification for the blessings in my life. It can be achieved.
Speaking for myself, this is literally one of the best discussions I have heard in the podcast realm.
It is the best conversation, I watched in my life. Truly remarkable! Will watch it over and over again throughout my life. Thank you Dr. James Hollis and Andrew Huberman.
By far, this was the most enlightening conversation on your podcast. The wisdom of James Hollis left me in awe 🙏
It was a pleasure to watch, how Dr. Hollis can articulate almost the same messages as Peterson but without fury, arrogance, disgust, and threats.
and anxious ego......
You can tell he made a mark on huberman (and me) during this one. I can see the struggle, pain, and trauma in his eyes. Hope this therapy session brought you some tranquility. To everyone else struggling, keep your head up and keep on fighting. Thx for the therapy session.
