It really makes you realize that the original Top Gear public challenges were things that nobody would believe had actually happened. "Yeah, I was driving my train when I passed a car carrying four caravans, one of the caravans burst into flames" It's very similar to "I got stuck in traffic because a stretched limo van got stuck on a corner"
I mean, it's basically all staged for funsies; they were clearly on a disused or heritage line in the first place. You can't just close off a main line for the sake of filming these sorts of stunts. the whole idea is to build the worst contraptions possible and take the piss. They would get canceled if some of their more outrageous stunts weren't planned out, like thr train mashing the carrivan at the end.
to be fair here, they did get into trouble multiple times for some of the stunts they pulled. I think the BBC actually got fined multiple times for some of Top Gears wilder stunts, like the times they actually did sink cars into a sea or the like.
@@EnerKaizer I can't find anything on them getting environmental fines; however they did ultimately get cancelled because they were turned down by insurance. While what they do is 'staged' in a way, they are still stunts, carried out with practical effects and real people. A "real" train uses a solid axle with conical wheels. Because it's a solid axle, the wheels spin at the same RPM, but the conical profile adjusts the wheel diameter on the fly, giving the whole thing dynamic stability on the track. Putting rail wheels on a car isn't the same thing at all. Without a solid axle, the wheels are free to spin at different RPM. The wheel flanges may prevent derailment, but there's no dynamic stability. This is why the vibration is so much worse than a normal train.
You are forgetting a major detail: those trailers had zero suspension, it was just wheels attached to the frame. I'm surprised they made it so far with such a poor design lol
I think the just-a-man and the editor of Rail Express magazine were quite brave. That cut-down caravan was pretty bouncy at speed and if it had derailed I'm not sure those harness installations or those roll bars would have been all that helpful.
Hell, riding third class @ 195yrs ago with the loco throwing cinders and muck back at you , faster than you believed possible without the benefit of actual signals...
@@halalnews The line they are on looks to be disused or herritage; so they likely rented it out for filming. I'd wager since a caravan is very flimsy the heritage railway didn't mind mashing it with a sturdy engine. Alternatively, they used forced perspective to hide a near miss, and used a small ammount explosives or a pull cable out of sight to demo the caravan safely. After that it's just a mater of cleaning it all up.
To the Team or Person behind TopGearClassic, id love a video on the WHOLE car boat history. From the Inception of the Toybota and so on until the race for the record of crossing the Channel in an amphibeous Car. No single scene missing. Thank you
Depends on the rail network; Not every rail network still has a conductor-type position. GO network in Canada for example has a two-man crew on most trains, both of which are engineers. Any non pre-recorded announcement falls to them, and ticket collection is all automated. Conversely I've been on some full service trains that still have stewarts/stewardesses; and they tend to make most announcements, like telling passengers about scenic views coming up, itinerary, etc. While the conductor calls out stops, delays and other information.
I think this channel should upload the segments without any cuts. From how the idea came up, everything that happened until the end, because if you watch the original episode there will be at least twice as much content.
That is kinda half the point of these though. Show you enough to entertain and leaves you wanting more so you will go buy whatever streaming service Top Gear is on or buy the series.
