@scottykilmer One factor you didn't calculate in...the ridiculous sticker price on Toyotas deflates the maintenance cost as a percentage of the sticker price.
As an example, I compared the the Corolla and Civic, and their maintenance costs were actually similar. The sticker price on Toyotas sort of makes this a bogus comparison. It should just be maintenance costs...dollar for dollar.

My 15 y/o Honda Accord only needed a tension pulley in all that time. Beyond that, the only cost was maintenance. I respect your opinion Scotty, but the way you care for the car has a lot to do with how long a car will last. I know you love Toyota products, but they aren't made in heaven!

I bought my Honda Civic Sport brand new in 2019. Basically it was the last full size 2.0L V-tech (no turbo) , 6-speed before Honda put golf-cart motors with turbos in every car and eliminated the manuals (except for the SI). Glad I bought my car when I did. I've had zero issues with it.

Other than that, the only money I've spent is on the front struts. $350 total to do both. I've kept it clean every two weeks with a car wash also. Oh, two sets of tires. One came with the car, the other I'm getting ready to replace now.

I never had any issue maintain and repair cost compared to Volvo GL, GLEm (made in Sweden) Oldsmobile Delta 88 that brought new but drained me with insurance and repair and maintenance. My sister brought and leased Lexas ES 350, SUV and she had no problem finding buyer after the lease expired.

Ah, the poor RX-8's misunderstood Dorito engine. Most of the problems with the RX-8 are really owner-induced, simply because people don't know two things about them:
    1. They don't behave and wear quite like piston engines.
    2. More so than most cars - they have to be driven to keep working. Wankel engines are 100% use it or lose it, and have the best longevity with blasting cobwebs (or really, carbon) out of them by wringing them out regularly.
They're not really high-maintenance so much as they have different needs from more conventional engines. Understand them, and they'll last about as long as any other engine. But if you don't - well, you're one of the people who've had to have a new Dorito put in every 60,000 miles, because it's jammed full of carbon buildup.
For my money, it's one of Mazda's finest cars, right up there with the Miata. It just got an unfairly bad rap for leaking oil and burning through engines - which wasn't really the fault of the design. Just poor education on how to maintain them, even to Mazda dealers.

One of the factors in my wanting this particular SUV was the cost to maintain and the residual value. The frame had a little rust on it but after a power wash I could see it was superficial rust. Hello sir / Scott
This is John Chan the fisherman. I'm retiring from my law enforcement career at 55 yr old.
At this time, my wife and I own 6 Toyota...2007 tundra 5.7 liter has 197K miles on it. She pulls my 22 ft Boston whaler with 175HP Suzuki every summer with ease, 2007 RX350 with 62K miles, 2009 Toyota yaris with 168K miles, 2013 RX350 with 121K miles, 2018 NX300 with 72K miles, and a 2022 GR86 with 6K miles on it.
I convinced my wife to stick to Toyota because of the cheap to maintain and long lasting vehicles.
Although I had owned many different brands of cars in the past. Just to name a few used to own evoX, C-7, WRX, mustang RTR and California special...ect.
So far very happy with our Toyota. I changed my engine oil every 5000 miles.

You should use total dollar cost(absolute values) instead of % cost(relative values) in comparing real maintenance costs. At 10 % maintenance for a $35000 car that is $3500 for total maintenance. If you pay $ 70000 for a car with 7% maintenance, you are paying $ 4900. The difference is $1400 So the real maintenance cost is in favor of the cheaper car with it higher %. That means a total cost of $38500 vs $ 74900. But if you can afford a $70000 car, then maintenance cost is of no concern compared to someone who can't....PS. Scotty's advice saved me a few thousand dollars in repairing(maintaining) my car.....SO a BIG Thanks to you Scotty.

After 50 years of driving my own vehicles I will only buy Toyota or Lexus. When I was young, it was Chrysler (mostly due to acquisition costs) and later it was GM. I still own an older, V8 GM truck and I'm quite happy with it. However my next truck will be a Toyota. I experienced the GM intake manifold gasket engine failures with the 3800 and the 3400 and that turned me off. I owned a 4.6 Crown Vic that was quite good too, but it rusted off the road.

Should I do a fluid chang or ride it smooth and easy in first gear to hopefully get a few years out of it. The fluid doesn't look terrible but also not great. Not black or anything but light pink mixed with dark mixed in.

These percent maintenance costs don't mean jack. They will be naturally lower for higher priced brands/models. This is why Toyota models with the highest MSRPs have the lowest percentage maintenance costs. The same goes for Lexus. It costs about the same to change oil and other maintenance stuff labor wise across different models.

I've owned Euro and American cars, and one of the American cars I've owned was Jaguar with the American badge slapped on it. Neither of the American cars needed major maintenance. My Euro cars never needed any major maintenance. Maybe it was the model years or maybe I just got lucky. I can say this for sure, today's cars (iPhones on wheels) whether Japanese, Euro, Italian, or American will all cost a boat load to fix due to all the unnecessary electronics they have now.
