No matter how bad what China has been doing in Africa, it's still nothing compared to what France has been doing there since 100 plus years, yet I haven't heard any hypocrit from the mainstream media talking about it.

Trevor, am a Kenyan and I differ slightly with you. Western nations were the major investors in African countries and their terms were always imbalanced and unfair to us. They interfered in our politics, our social values and economic policies, on top of providing expensive loans and trade imbalanced. Although China is not the best option, it is the better option for African countries at the moment. We started being called "the rising giants" in the last decade just after China increased investments. So, if Western nations think they wanna invest here, let them battle the competition with China.

I agree with you. I am European and have to say: If other fully industrialized nations would have had the guts to invest as much as China did, they would have done. I don't want to see African countries being suppressed by yet another colonizing force, but I don't think for a minute that other countries would do anything else. Might actually be worse. I heard there is a global superpower that likes to make things up in order to outright invade.

Nigeria hasn't been able to repay Western loans borrowed since the 70s and 80s which hardly provided physical infrastructures and were mostly purely embezzled while at least we are seeing the direct physical infrastructures being built with the Chinese loans which will surely help improve our economy. The problem is not the Chinese loans but our greedy leaders who agree high loans just to make their own profits from it as they know they cannot fully embezzle the money as they did with the borrowed Western Loans. As an Ethiopian, I believe that Chinese govt negotiates investments with Chinese interests in mind and African governments negotiate with their respective interests in mind. There are potential upsides and downsides to all parties involved and all parties act in their best interests. Calling it new colonialism is infantilizing African countries and treating them as if they have no agency in their decisions.
Also, the US and European investment has been incredibly small in most countries and as many have commented here, European countries are still exploiting certain African directly. So comapirng China to the West is a false equivalency.

And I’m still holding my breath for the West to charge and imprison unscrupulous western private sector precious resource players operating in Africa.
Infrastructure is a key starting point for just about all countries and it’s coming in regardless of the motivation. Hopefully, with that starting point, African countries can get their respective houses in order.

I have watched the tapes that recorded how they started all of it from building a factory in the middle of nothing. They spent years making the factory work and offered thousands of jobs to locals. They spoke French, because Benin was colonized by France since 19 century, and worked with locals. It is a win-win thing.
I don't understand why Chinese companies are always condemned as forced labor or invasion. What Chinese companies do is just the same thing those US companies, like NIKE, APPLE, TESLA keep doing in China for decades. And China only accounts for 25% of the external debt of these African countries, only a select few has a China majority debt. Africa will be the literal and financial fuel for this "4th industrial revolution" we keep hearing about and all the major players have been doing whatever it takes to stay competitive. America has probably been the biggest player in this. Starting wars, funding rebellions, killing those influential individuals who call for financial independence and vertical integration of industry. Once the country has been ravaged beyond repair, armies of corporations come swooping in to pillage resources as they please, while taking all the large contracts for development which are themselves funded (through loans) by the large American banks. Then France takes a turn, then the U.K., then Israel, and on and on and on. The Berlin conference is when the world's most powerful western governments decided Africa would be a necessary sacrifice to achieve greatness and prosperity. Eventually, China got wise and the race was on.

You cannot imagine the amount of corruption going on in the majority of these African countries. They take on all these Chinese infrastructure projects so that they can turn around and tell their fellow countrymen; hey look, we are doing things. But the common person there is unaware of the egregious terms and conditions of those loans. Meanwhile the same African leaders will send their kids to study in Europe and America, go abroad for medical treatments, and vacation overseas also. Heck, some will even fly business class to go watch Barcelona or Chealsea FC play. Meanwhile their stadiums back home are crumbling.
It is up to the African leaders to build their countries from the bottom up, and not turn to shortcuts. This idea that Africa is weak and so must be eternally aided must stop. If Africans cannot stand up for themselves, then no one will.
By the way, just a few decades ago, Chinese people were dying of starvation. But now China is one of the biggest economic powers. Why, because they decided to stand up for themselves. If they didn't, they'd still simply be the world's factory. But China has decided to unabashedly copy western technology and make some of their own. And it is working for them. The lesson here is that Africa can do things for themselves if they set out to do them. Not waiting on the next colonial power. First it was the Europeans, now the Chinese. Who will be next: The Arabs?

Secondly, Africa has had over 60 years of close ties with western nations such as US and and Britain. Yet, we have struggled so long with poverty and infrastructure. China may have a political agenda, but at least we have global-standard railways, roads, electricity, water supply. Western style is simple: KEEP THEM POOR AND DEPENDENT. Chinese is also simple: MAKE THEM WEALTHIER BUT INDEBTED. I'd choose the latter anytime.

When China spent a lot of money, they didn’t really expect to have profits, the main reason is to help African people to get out of poverty , which can maintain the world peace. If there’s anything in return, there would be some political support to China, which makes a better balance of the world super powers and development of all the countries. China knows very well, if you want a place to be wealthy, first you build a road. This episode is such a disappointment, cause you don’t see the significance change for the African people. I am a bit confused to be honest... according to the video, China has provided loans to struggling countries in Africa with as low as zero interests, other countries didn't even bother considering to do the same thing because they think it will be just a waste of money. Would it be better to just not lend the money to Africa and let them be? Not to mention that these money are going to infrastructure projects which will really benefit the country in the long term... As for taking away the assets when a country can't repay the loan, I haven't seen any news reporting any actual case that occurred, but even if it really happened, isn't it a common practice to give the lender your asset in exchange of the unpaid debt? I am just really confused, hope someone with more insight can answer.

Basically, China took an advantage of the African countries’ vulnerability. They knew the countries couldn’t turn down the loans that would improve them, and they also knew the countries wouldn’t be able to repay the loans. So they gave out the loans with the intention of ultimately taking over land and natural resources, not necessarily to help africa. This is evident by the fact that they rather bring Chinese workers to work on projects than hire local Africans for the projects. It’s terrible, their taking an advantage of these African countries that have already been through sm

Ok, here's the best way I can explain it:
You go to a lender for a car loan. You can't find a decent-paying job so you default on your car loan. The lender says, "No problem. If you never shop at 'X' named grocery store again, we will forgive your car loan". Debtor says, "You got it. 'X' grocery store goes out of business, the lender brings in 'Y' grocery store (which they have a financial interest in), & the cost of the debtor's groceries skyrocket which in turn chains him/her to a financial treadmill for life.

When the US Foreign Secretary Rex Tillerson traveled to Africa in 2018 to warn African nations against working with China, he landed in an airport built by China, then he traveled on a road built by China, before he arrived in a hall built by China. And he told the people: “Do not work with China”.
When African countries deal with China, they get tangible assets. Assets like roads, water treatment, railways, communication networks which allow African countries to develop their economies. When Africa countries deal with the West, their public assets need to be privatized before any further talks, otherwise they are dismissed by given a lecture on human rights. After privatization, these assets are controlled by foreign capitalists. And if the country has oil, American capitalists like George Soros would attack the economy, IMF and World Bank would come and give the loan, and Exxon/BP/Shell would take the oil. And if the country has oil and the leaders have big ambitions, e.g. Gaddafi’s pan-African currency and Saddam Hussein’s refusal to use dollar in oil trades, bombs made by Raytheon would be dropped in the countries, the leaders would be killed, then US companies would be moved in to “rebuild” the country, the IMF and World Bank would come and give the loan, and Exxon/BP/Shell would take the oil, and nothing is built.
After China came to Africa, finally the US and friends “cares” about Africa. In 2021 G7 Summit, the US slapped themselves in the face by announcing the “Build Back Better World”(B3W) plan to “compete” with China. One year later, nothing was built. Instead, in the following year, in 2022 G7 Summit, the US announced the “Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment” (PGII), another political mouthpiece to “compete” with China. The fact is the US and France in particular never wanted to see African countries develop, Africa should continue to provide low cost labor to the West."
