All three of my Drills were there and one of them stomped it and it shot across the room and plastered the Senior Drill SGT right in the chest. It was so hard not to laugh and somebody did. My time in the Army was the BEST, I say again, the BEST time of my life!!! It was the first time in my young life I had freedom...home life was much stricter than Basic...I was used to getting up early although not at 0400...0600 was my wakeup time at home...I had no trouble with authority whatsoever...my only 'problem' was the physical side of Basic - running and those monkey bars you hadda do before chow, but I did it...like every other swingin' 'richard'...I loved being in Germany I got off base every chance I had...traveled as much as possible, (at the time, I despised beer) even got to the REAL Oktoberfest twice...in '72 & '73...spent A LOT of money at the 'Wall'...I hated coming home in July of '74...found I no longer had anything in common with my peers...tried for 9 years to reenlist but was FINALLY told in '83 that my eyesight..marginal when I enlisted in '71 and which almost kept me out was beyond acceptable limits. To this day Istill wish I had reenlisted...but I saw Armor as a dead end, so I left a d used the G I Bill to get my MA in Secondary Education..my purpose was twofold...reenlist and use the points for a. Advanced degree to advance in rank..if that didn't work out at least I had a degree that would get me a teaching job...for all the good two degrees did me i life I shouldda learned a trade...

My dad told me...just before he died in June of 84...that the army 'RUINED' me...he meant that he no longer controlled me...I was 34 at the time..he'd held that grudge for the years...I'd do it all over again and STAYED in...

The boy hadn't even started yet and already wanted out?😂😂😂drill sergeants are alot different when your serving with them in a permanent duty station. I had 3 former drill sergeants when I was in Korea at Camp Garry Owen, and my new 1st Sgt had been my senior drill sergeant in Fort Knox. Another spec4 and I both recognized him, the first morning we saw him before morning formation. We both walked over and said hi 1st Sgt, we remember you from Ft Knox as our senior Drill Sgt, how are you doing, do you remember us. He looked at both of us and said, yeah I remember both of you, get the hell away from me😂😂😂we said, that's not very nice Sgt Jones, why do you wanna be like that. Then Top said get the hell away from me, and we both turned around and walked away chuckling😂😂😂1976 4/7 Cav Camp Garry Owen 2nd ID💪🇺🇸😏😂😎

Best advice I can give you is to just buy in right at the start. Don't hold back, don't try to assert your individuality, don't think you're too cool or too smart to be there. Jump when you're told to jump, hit the deck quick when you're told to drop. Everyone is going to be all-in before long anyway, so make it easy on yourself and just commit to the program from day one. When you're in your last week, try to make the time to look around and keep some memories.

Always remember, you are never right, you are always fucking something up, and they will always have a reason to yell at you. Getting smoked is not a punishment, its getting your body right, and you should enjoy it. Most of us look back and wish we could go back to those days. Its been 10 years for me. I remember it like it was yesterday. Enjoy it, it'll be over quickly, and then you will be thrust into the bullshit that is the actual army. Its really not fun from that point on.

Stack bunks in to other bunks, block the pathway with a stack of mattresses. Fun times...
