All these musicians are serving soldiers and can be posted anywhere in the world with their regiments. Every regiment has its own band and this was a combined operation. Their ability to march in unison and play an instrument at the same time is amazing. To answer your question this Festival is held every year in the Royal Albert Hall on the evening before the ceremony at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
"1 I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love: the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; the love that never falters, the love that pays the price, the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. 2 And there's another country I've heard of long ago, most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; we may not count her armies, we may not see her King; her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace."
I love this piece and this is probably one of the best renditions I've ever heard. It should be our national anthem. The Festival of Remembrance is of the same high standard each year. It has to be to pay due homage to those who gave all.
Conner - Sir, your respectful comments toward our British way of life is gratefully noted. The Remembrance Service is recognised every year on the 11 day, of the 11 month in recognition of the end of the war.
I Vow To Thee, My Country is a hymn, which gives it a special gravitas. Certainly very patriotic as well. The flags were the ones of the different national branches of The Royal British Legion, (a service/veterans association), carried by ex-service personnel, which is why they marched so well in step. The annual Service of Rememberance is a grand affair every year, held in The Albert Hall, as is The Last Night of The Proms, which was held last night (13/9/24) So glad you enjoyed it 🤗
Thank you for showing this video, and thank you for watching it all the way through without interruption. That is held every year at The Royal Albert Hall in London and to see the whole performance is with out doubt a most spectacular performance. I enjoy it every year, it brings tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat.
If the hairs on your neck don't stand up and you get full on body chills then you're not British. I am incredibly proud and protective over our armed forces. Every man and woman sign their name to a blank cheque we hope never to cash. If you don't back your armed forces you don't deserve them. They're doing a job I haven't got the guts to do. My grandparents survived the London Blitz. My family is military with so many of us been in nearly every branch of it. I hate to see disrespect aimed at them.
The Festival of Remembrance takes place at the Royal Albert Hall every year on the Saturday nearest to 11th November (Armistice Day). It is always very moving.....especially the two minutes silence when thousands of poppies flutter down from the roof of the building. Thank you for being so respectful.
It is just as grand and epic each year, but with variations on the musical and artistic format. This gives me goosebumps, I guess that's unsurprising as I'm British to my marrow, but it's almost something beyond that, something that makes my human soul resonate. That perhaps begins to explain why I have seen Americans and people from countries across the globe be similarly emotionally moved watching videos like this in other YT reactions. My pride and gratitude for my country is immeasurable 🇬🇧❤Pax Britannica
The Festival of Remembrance takes place on the Saturday closest to the 11th November at the Royal Albert Hall. Armistice or Remembrance Services take place all over the UK on Sunday, the following day. We all watched the Service at the Cenotaph with you last year, when poppy wreaths were laid in honour of those who gave their lives for our freedom.
In case you were wondering the people with the blue and yellow flags are from the Royal British Legion which is a veterans organisation much like the American Legion.
I remember that. The first time, there was so much joy seeing a young, open hearted girl get married. To have this played at her funeral, after so much mistreatment, was immensely sad.
The music was also the theme for the inaugural Rugby World Cup (sung by Kiri Te Kanawa). Such a great piece of music. This and Mars are my favourite two.
My husband was in the Royal Navy and when the ship was entering the harbour in Peru he had just found out he had another son just born and he asked the Royal Marines leader of the band ( the ones with the white helmets) to play a Yorkshire song titled On ILkley Moor Ba tat as we are from Yorkshire and I always tell my son that the band played the song for him. The Royal Marine Band is and always was the most superb band.
Have you heard the band of the Royal Marines with the solo girl soldier and the solo boy soldier singing? They are brilliant! Makes me very proud to be a veteran and British
Love this one. Most of the songs performed were learnt in school. Singing them in class assembly. I vow to thee my country & Jerusalem are my favourites. The Christmas ones to I love. In the bleak mid winter is one of my favourites we sung in school. I still remember all the words. I’m almost 56 so you can think that I left school a long time ago x😂😂
@@MrsLynBI think she means that she can remember what happened when she was younger in detail, but ask her what happened yesterday and she can’t remember…😊
The Festival of Remembrance is when we remember those who have died in various wars. That was lovely but when you hear them singing it as well it's even more haunting. If you wonder about the poppies there are videos about those. It's held every year but various in style.
Hi Connor, this was my high school hymn ,sung at all important school occasions, I have always loved it ! I love watching all your videos by the way, you always say it as it is...never change.
I Vow to Thee Thy Country actually has words to it. If you look up I Vow to Thee My Country by the Royal Marines Band Service and The Honley Male Voice Choir you will hear one of the best versions of this remembrance hymn. The festival of Remembrance is to honour all those who fought for their country. On the 11th Day of the 11th Month at 11 am we observe a minutes silence to honour all those who fought and died in WW1 and WW2 and other conflicts to defend our country 😢

Hi Conner, not sure if it would be too long for yourself but I would recommend watching a full Festival of Remembrance there are several here on RUclips.
The Royal Albert Hall is an amazing venue. Not just used for the festival of remembrance or the Proms, but also some of the biggest singers and groups in the world have performed there and the venue has also hosted sports events. Here you have the tri service bands of the Royal Marines, Grenadier Guards and Royal Air Force, each of these bands are different in their styles and sounds but when together amazing.
Traditionally every regiment had its own band, during conflicts these band members became the medics and stretcher bearers helping to evacuate the injured and dying...
All the forces bands are also serving members of their services as well, they aren’t just musicians. Also yes, the festival of remembrance happens every year in November.
Thank you for posting (again). Not sure whether you would be interested in who makes some of the uniforms. A lot of stuff is made on the Row (that would be Savile Row by the way). A lot of work is done geographically there and one person may only sew sleeves - one only cut jackets or bits of jackets. Start at Dege and Skinner (Richard Skinner still runs the shop). You could spend a lot of time researching that street! All the best and thanks for posting
As previously suggested Luke Evans (actor) singing it at the same festival is amazing. I've forgotten which year he sang but I am sure it was later than 2017. Very emotional. The tune is not played every year as each year the service has a different programme. Every year the most emotional part is when the poppies fall to the ground and it is in utter silence on to the heads of the service people on the ground of the Royal Albert Hall (same venue as the Proms) - it represents every serviceman lost in combat.
At my school we used to sing this song both on 11th November at Assembly, and in chapel each time it was reported that an old boy had died in military service.
The words to this music are fantastic. I also get chills and yes this should be our anthem. We used to sing this at our school assembly many years ago.
All the members of the bands and orchestra ARE serving members of the UK military. The flag bearers are members of the Royal British Legion, a veterans charity organisation dedicated to supporting military veterans.
You are a very respectful young man. You have a very kind face, thank you for appreciating our hymn...I love it too. It always gives me the shivers and my eyes fill up every time I hear it....I'm so glad you enjoyed it, it was Diana's favourite hymn x
We sang this in Church here in Australia for the returned soldiers and their families. We have many expats from Britain and it is a lovely way to honour them.
It's an annual event held in the same venue as The Proms - the Royal Albert Hall - every year on the day before Remembrance Sunday (the Sunday closest to November 11th). Organised by the British Legion it commemorates every branch of people who were involved in WW2. It is always this grand - and televised live.
You also need to look at other performances where this hymn is sung so you can hear the words, which are set to this piece of music (a section of "Jupiter" from the Planet Suite by Gustav Holst).
Yes always the same every year thank you for you nice comments God bless you and the United States of America greetings and love to all from the United Kingdom 🙏🌹❤️🙏
Historically, armies would fly a flag or banner so that combatants would defend the flag. The ones paraded belong to the branches, units and regiments of all branches of British Armed Services and will be embroidered with the names of the battles fought by each. Some regiments are hundreds of years old. Our national Day of Remembrance is November 11th annually. The Armistice for the First World war was signed on the 11th month on the 11th day at the eleventh hour: hence the phrase relating to a last minute rescue or reprieve happening 'at the eleventh hour". The Albert Hall ceremony takes place attended by the Royal Family, government ministers, normally the Prime Minister, ex service personnel , their families and the general public can purchase tickets. The monies go to our 'poppy appeal' which helps to support both serving and ex-service staff and their families. The following day, Sunday, we have a wreath laying at The Cenotaph - a memorial to the fallen of all services and nations who have fought for freedom and given their lives in the cause. Such services are replicated across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth at 11a.m. local time. During the First World War there was appalling loss of life in the waterlogged battlefields and trenches of Flanders, southern Belgium. We lost tens of thousands of soldiers. In the Spring the fields were full of red poppy flowers. They became our emblem of Remembrance. The paper flowers are made in their tens of thousands by ex service personnel in workshops run by the British Legion and their are sales of these poppies across the country to every Autumn in aid of Armed Services' British Legion charity. You will see people wearing these in their lapels in the first 11 days of November each year. The services remember civilians, too and people irrespective of faith or nationality.
Also nearly every single town and village has a war memorial, with the names of the dead from the village/town engraved on it. And every year there is a parade and a service.
This was sung at my wedding, I insisted on the full 3 verses. The second vers..e, to my knowledge is never sung,. I can find no video online of all three verses. If Ulster could be free, this should be our national anthem. 1 I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love: the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; the love that never falters, the love that pays the price, the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. 2 I heard my country calling, away across the sea, Across the waste of waters she calls and calls to me; Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on hear head; And round her feet are lying the dying and the dead; I heard the sound of battle, the thunder of her guns, I haste to thee my mother, a son among her sons." 3 And there's another country I've heard of long ago, most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; we may not count her armies, we may not see her King; her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.
It takes place at the Royal Albert Hall in London, as does the 'Proms' (Promenade Concerts) each summer.. All of the bandsmen would be serving military personnel. Many would have seen combat. Very Many Thanks .. those of us who missed this at the time will be highly appreciative of your efforts.. and your comments. It is a very moving presentation.
The music was taken from Holst’s Planets (Jupiter). The lyrics were added later. When I was young, we had to sing this at school every Commonwealth Day, which I think was 24th May.
The Proms are on every August. The Festival of Remembrance was in November. 11am on the 11th November is officially Armistice Day, (1918) when the guns stopped at the end of WW1, commemorated every year with the wearing of Poppies and Services all over the country/Commonwealth, such as the one at the Cenotaph. The special Anniversary festivals are fantastic. 2018 was particularly memorable. And yes, this is the Royal Albert Hall which is also the venue for the Proms.
My late grandfather was in the Royal Fleet Air Arm , he was a very active member of British legion by selling Poppies along with my late Nan for many decades. Sadly my Nan passed away on the same day as the Festival of Remembrance.. my youngest daughter is named after her. Nan was a Nanny by occupation before the Second World War broke out, she left this to return home for helping to run the family shop. By issuing out the various rations on food during these difficult times. This is not for just the past but very much the current military personnel whom have lost their life serving their beloved king and country.
This takes place on the eve of Remembrance Sunday. Another spectacular is the Mountbatten Festival of Music featuring the Royal Marines bands and is available on RUclips
Those in Uniform are all serving Military People, Royal Marines, Army and Royal Air force, yes most are musicians but as Sir Winston Churchill Said "We are Soldiers first, tradesman second" they are all capable of carrying weapons are all trained in combat roles, The folks carrying the standards from various branches of the Royal British Legion, are all Military Veterans, and most in attendance will be either veterans themselves, loved ones of veterans, serving personnel or in someway connected to the military. I Vow to Thee Thy Country is the most beautiful hymn ever written and speaks of our own country but also of one longed fro one full of PEACE. "LEST WE FORGET"
The bands of the Armed Forces are professional musicians but also Soldiers, Royal Marines, Airman who are medics in their war roles. The Royal Navy ( my own service) has volunteer bands coming from all specialities to provide military music for events. The festival of remembrance is always as grand as this was and is yearly event prior to Remembrance Sunday.
Thank you Connor, for being so respectful. So happy you liked part of the Festival of Remembrance, at the Royal Albert hall in November. The Prom's concert starts in July till the Last night of the Prom's in September, also at the Royal Albert hall. ❤🙏
The Royal Albert Hall is used for all sorts of events as well as the Annual Service of Remembrance. And yes, it is always this solemn and formal and is attended by the Senior Royals. You already know about the annual Promenade Concerts (the Proms) which include Jazz and World Music as well as Classical, but I’ve also been to see The Nutcracker on Ice there when the open floor had been frozen over, Prokoviev’s Romeo and Juliet Ballet and the Cirque du Soleil. It’s a fantastic venue. The musicians in this video are all serving members of the armed forces and can be deployed at any time. Their ‘soldiering’ always comes first and the ‘ceremonials’ second. We have instrumental performance exams in the U.K. as set by the Royal Academy of Music (and other Boards) which go from a beginner’s Grade 1 to a very proficient Grade 8 (and beyond, into Degree level). You can get up to Grade 5 on just your playing ability but to go any further you have to pass your Grade 5 Theory exam too. You could stop the Theory exams then if you wanted and concentrate on your playing skill, but the minimum requirement for acceptance into an armed forces band is Grade 6 Theory, so they’re already ahead of the curve. The next big event to feature the military, the Royal Family, and many thousands of military Veterans from all around the world is the Remembrance Sunday parade in Whitehall which will take place this year on 10th November. It always takes place on the second Sunday in November and marks the signing of the Armistice ending the First World War, but it also commemorates those who have died in other conflicts since. In the U.K. at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we stop and remember the fallen in silence for 2 minutes; traffic will stop, shops will not ring up purchases, switchboards play a recorded message, and this will happen all over the country in every town and village that has a War Memorial engraved with the names of its citizens that have died in military service. It’s also known as Poppy Day, but that’s another story. 😊
As the Geneva Convention states, drummers, buglers and bagpipers are combatant soldiers and can carry weapons. Musicians (those playing other instruments) are non-combatants and are, therefore, cross-trained as medics. ---- This is the normal Festival held every year.
This is a service to remember all those British and Commonwealth soldiers that have fallen in war. Originally the 1st and 2nd World Wars but now to include all Wars the UK have been involved in.. It is a yearly event and the ones carrying the flags are veterans, as I think you would call them, representing all the British Legion associations around the UK. British Legions are what we call our clubs for ex servicemen. The event precedes Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day which is the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when the German forces capitulated in WW1.
The first verse of this hymn is about those who sacrifice their lives for their country, but the second is an entirely spiritual (Christian) message, which lifts it above the normal run of patriotic anthems.
We watch the service of remembrance every year it is from the Albert Hall in London it is wonderful, if you get the chance watch it from start to finish you will not be disappointed.
It is a really emotional hymn. Charles and Diana had it at their wedding in St Paul's. It carries real meaning for some Brits, like 'Jerusalem'. Yes, the Festival of Remembrance is held every November and follows the same sort of pattern each time. It focusses on different aspects of the military, but each year is special. 🙂
Jerusalem is my very favourite hymn. As a former church organist, one of the most difficult accompaniments ever - but so satisfying. And did those feet in ancient times . . .
Thank you for listening to it right through without interrupting. Your respect is appreciated.
The Festival of Remembrance is very special and I am so pleased that you appreciated it.

"1 I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love:
the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
the love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
2 And there's another country I've heard of long ago,
most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
we may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace."
Amongst the most poetic verses in the English language
The sentiments in the poem are applicable to all civilised countries - patriotism without envy.

The Royal Albert Hall is a great venue. Little piece of information for you Connor. The Royal engeeners built the Royal Albert Hall.
Regarding the 'Flags' carried by members of the Royal British Legion, they are correctly known as 'STANDARDS'.
This was Princess Diana’s favourite hymn,it was sung at her funeral service.
My very favourite too.
@@pathopewell1814 Ditto.
You also need to look at other performances where this hymn is sung so you can hear the words, which are set to this piece of music (a section of "Jupiter" from the Planet Suite by Gustav Holst).
How absolutely splendid.
Yes always the same every year thank you for you nice comments God bless you and the United States of America greetings and love to all from the United Kingdom 🙏🌹❤️🙏
This and the Last Post always make me cry remembering my papa.
My heart bursts with pride being a true honest Brit, this song always has me standing tall.
This was sung at my wedding, I insisted on the full 3 verses. The second vers..e, to my knowledge is never sung,. I can find no video online of all three verses. If Ulster could be free, this should be our national anthem.
1 I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love:
the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
the love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
2 I heard my country calling, away across the sea,
Across the waste of waters she calls and calls to me;
Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on hear head;
And round her feet are lying the dying and the dead;
I heard the sound of battle, the thunder of her guns,
I haste to thee my mother, a son among her sons."
3 And there's another country I've heard of long ago,
most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
we may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.
Thank you Connor, your videos are great,love from the UK❤🇬🇧
My brother a british marine past out to this music , i find it haunting and special to this country. His name is derick robert sullivan
This was played at my father's funeral earlier this year. He was a former Kingsman and always proud to be so.
Respect from USA.
Connor, the US and American dead lie in Flanders Fields from WWI. They are with the Brave and frightened men who deserved this recognition!
So very very proud watching that ❤ tearful too 😢 🏴
There is a particularly nice version of this starring a small group of Royal Marines. "I Vow To Thee My Country | The Bands of HM Royal Marines"
Got me choked up 😢
Connor, thank you for your respect.
It's a hymn. When it's sung, it's wonderful - very moving. This was the Royal Marines' Band.
As the Geneva Convention states, drummers, buglers and bagpipers are combatant soldiers and can carry weapons. Musicians (those playing other instruments) are non-combatants and are, therefore, cross-trained as medics. ---- This is the normal Festival held every year.
One of the most beautiful songs and Princess Diana’s favorite
Muy emocionante. La pompa inglesa está muy bien representada.😊
Connor.... Thanks for caring 👍👍🙏🙏
The first verse of this hymn is about those who sacrifice their lives for their country, but the second is an entirely spiritual (Christian) message, which lifts it above the normal run of patriotic anthems.
I agree James let’s have this has our national anthem instead of that dirge we do have. I’d stand up for it.
All the musicians are also regular service personnel. Thank you. 🏴🇬🇧
And did those feet in ancient times . . .
