If this doesn't violate your personal comfort level, I would love to see a video about how a couple from Australia met and somehow became the owners of the largest private restoration project in France. Hollywood would call it a prequel. It must be a fascinating tale filled with incongruous twists and turns. Also in a more humorous note, I'm wondering if Felicity can remember the last time she spent a whole day without wearing work boots. Love your channel.

Modern day work boots are very comfortable, problem I have is finding them without steel caps.

    • @jeannemara1600
      @jeannemara1600 4 месяца назад +9

Those caps are protection for your feet. Some construction companies require their workers to wear them. Some cities require construction and other workers to do so.

The work of this remarkable young Australian couple is little short of heroic. My wife and I have restored a small Maison de Maitre in northern France, which itself has taken quite a number of years, but watching Pernon be restored , well. It is just amazing.. These fine Australians who expended fortune intelligence care competence and love to such a wonderful result makes these two people, for me, worthy of a national award by the French state for the immensity of their achievement and I hope one day they get just that.
    Superb.

My brain is finding it difficult to comprehend the fact I’m looking at original 18th century wallpaper that was seen by the original owners. It’s just mind blowing! I actually zoomed in to the damage in the middle and with the video being filmed in the highest quality, you are able to see the detail behind which convinces you that it really is that old. Amazing!

Q& A: I have enjoyed immensely seeing the restoration of the beautiful old spaces in this incredible chateau.
Would you consider making a ‘behind the scenes’ video of how you and Tim live and cope with the ‘no shower’ etc situations? Your living quarters, adapting to France, have you made new friends? Hardships etc.

Indeed it does. I live in Canada and my French and Belgian ancestors came here in the mid 1600s. This was long before the era of this beautiful château, but I'm sure I have lots of very distant relatives still living in France and seeing the construction, and the cemetery (from a different video) made me feel emotional to imagine their lives, with all the joys and hardships.

Removing the lead paint, you should wear double headstrap masks. Theres a health risk to ingest lead contaminated dust. Château du Purnon is majestic at the very least. Admirable to take such a mammoth project to save this gorgeous building! 😊

    •  3 месяца назад +14

Thanks for your message. The lead paint being removed in this video is being stripped using a product called SmartStrip. The paint is transformed into a paste that can be removed wearing eye protection and gloves. This is demonstrated in this video which was produced at the chateau with the involvement of a lead paint removal expert: ruclips.net/video/PAfqPMFc3RQ/видео.html

Restoring a pre-revolution French château is a remarkable endeavor, especially when considering the dark history of its original owners, who were truly vile torturers and barbarians. It’s a powerful act to reclaim such a space, turning it from a symbol of oppression into a place of beauty and warmth. Each renovation not only breathes new life into the château but also serves as a reminder that we can learn from the past and create a future that values compassion and inclusivity. By transforming a space once marked by cruelty into one that celebrates art, culture, and community, we can rewrite its legacy and honor the resilience of those who suffered. It’s a fascinating and meaningful journey!

Yesterday my saviour came and installed the hot water service to my home and I now have 200 litres of hot water available to me at the turn of the tap. My grand old lady is only 111 years old, but she has never had one installed in her before. I still have some of the original wiring here to which as you note is very dangerous. The sparkie has been and made everything safe. I applaud you in your endeavours' in bringing your lady back to life. You have lived through so many challenges and you have so many more to go before the end is nye. Living with water damage, leaking roofs, lest not forget the disgusting smell that it creates, the dirt and every other unimaginable, that first shower you have in your home will be better than any fine bottle of Champagne, enjoy and don't forget the nice fluffy robes. I’m American. And have fallen in love with our equivalent of Edwardian Era homes, warm, cozy, rich wood outlined rooms made of different types of wood to create a beautiful effect with all kinds of depth and tones: the Crafsman. The Queen Anne Victorian. But the more I watch of this channel, the more I’m open to living in a grand stone chateau with a different goût du douillet…c’est à dire, à la comfort. Pas pour les papilles gustatives, mais pour l’âme. And how incredible that you’re keeping the original tommets for the requisitioned shower in the original maid’s quarters!

Thank you--hard to appreciate the scope of the progress when in the middle of it--taking the time to honor & respect the original is an incredible feat & hope you enjoy a very long shower & soak in the tub soon in the gorgeous bathroom! And the small laundry near the bathrooms is a great decision for that space & liveability.

You both are doing an absolute magnificent job, Purnon could not have fallen into better hands. I cannot imagine anyone else doing it and so incredibly. My question is... does the French government help fund the restoration? Did you research what funding was available before taking on the purchase of Purnon? Also if a property is so highly historically listed and protected why would they let it fall into such disrepair? Thank you for all you are both doing and sharing your progress with all of us! il y a environ 45000 chateaux, de toutes sortes, classés ou non, mais le gouvernement ne peux aider que les propriétaires qui s' engagent, devis précis...alors la , l' état aide jusqu' à 60% des rénovations, c' est beaucoup...

Merci, merci.

I am astounded by your calm. My 120 yo house in Illinois is not considered historic so I can make handicapped friendly modifications so I can age in place but finding craftsman who don't do more damage at high cost... That's with being citizen and native speakers!! Have been discouraged by so many people who don't care about restoration and preservation... Then there's my passion for sustainable agriculture and the awe of all the land and outbuildings. Just WOW! If I didn't have myasthenia gravis and need to finish my own house I would be pleading to help in grounds and outbuildings as unpaid hobbit, gardener, animal loving fiber artist. If you ever come to Illinois I would love to meet you.

I continue to appreciate being able to watch the whole process of such an important restoration. Your attention to detail, honoring the historical past, and bringing this amazing structure alive for the present and the future. Q&A question for you. It was a joy to see the previous owner and heiress of the family in one of your last videos with the architect. Has she, or any of the other members of the family still living, been able to provide any documentary archival information about life on the estate? Or anyone else who has been able to share any oral history of the estate, and what day-to-day life on the estate was like?? It would be fascinating to learn.

I have a couple questions I dont think you have covered before.
Who owns and maintains the "Grand Allee"? Surely it needs to have work done to keep the trees from growing over it.
How far away is the nearest town?
How far is the nearest material suppliers? "Brico"?
Thank you for allowing me to live vicariously through you as you save a precious piece of heritage. Love your videos! Stood and Cheered as I watched the busts return to the roof! Much love from Canada! - Renee

Question, did you give yourselves a timeline for the renovation and restoration? If so, are you in tune with that and when do you think this property will be considered saved for the future? Thank you for sharing and let us take part of this journey. I love Purnon, she is a gem. Elisabeth from Sweden.
