This reminds me of the Sino-British trade before 1840. Britain couldn't win over China in silk, porcelain and tea, so it started dumping drugs on China. When China started to ban drugs, the British used cannons to force China to buy their products. So Westerners are very experienced in fair trade.

Yeah, which is why they are pretty much now doing the same and dumping drugs on the US (in case you didn't know, Chinese companies are the ones supplying drug cartels with the raw ingredients for the opioid epidemic in the US). This was even before the trade tensions started.
The only difference is that China doesn't need guns to keep the drugs going to the US. The failure of the US government is doing it by themselves.

    • @benhatcher2603
      @benhatcher2603 6 месяцев назад +36

The objection is more philosophical. It is the parents of the now C and D students objecting to the kind of system, cram classes, singular focus, etc. that have allowed them to earn those A's. They believed in the value of being well rounded and are finding out that being well rounded means that you'll never be as good at any one thing as someone who devotes all of their time to just that one thing. To torture another analogy, the west has largely tried to create decathletes and China has ordered their population into 10 groups who will focus on one event each. The west doesn't believe in doing things that way.

That said, paper money is also not worth anything unless people ascribe value to it. There is actually zero need to "tax" people of paper currency, yet most governments use taxation in order to make the people believe the currency has value, and to distract people from the fact most western governments are funded via inflation. When you have a nation where such deception is not possible, paper currency rapidly loses 99.9% of it's value, like people paying for goods with billion dollar bills their government even printing $100 trillion banknotes (yes a single bill worth $100 trillion). And you've probably heard of the Weimar Republic where Germans were using wheelbarrows to bring millions of worthless reichmarks to stores just to buy food.

Step 2: Cut costs by using cheaper materials and ingredients, cut employee wages and compensation, and refuse to innovate or do R&D so you can maximize shareholder value
Step 3: Outsource any remaining American jobs to the developing world and hire immigrants to work for less
Step 4: Act bewildered and wonder why line no go up when you gut your business operations and destroy the buying power of the American consumer at the expense of shareholder value
Step 5: Cry for more subsidies, tariffs, and regulations when China (or any competitor) surpasses the value offered by shoddy American products and services
Step 6: Lobby to weaponize the US dollar when other countries refuse to be exploited
Step 7: Watch American industry wither and die and the economy implode

The biggest overcapacity is US DOLLAR!

    • @SocratesOnline
      @SocratesOnline 6 месяцев назад +24

The dollar is used because you can buy almost anything using dollars, no matter where the product has been produced. Most countries are happy using dollars because some other country producing stuff will accept those dollars because yet another country will sell something in dollars that the producing country needs. So if a country A wants to buy machine tools in Germany, if he has the dollars required, the German firm will accept those dollars. Dollars are held by most countries in the world in large quantities because the US accepts dollars to be held in large quantities in foreign countries. It gives power and leverage to foreign countries. That isvthe cost of dollars to be reserve currency.
When countries hold lots of dollars they can buy anything they want in the USA, including political leverage, companies etc.
If China wanted the Yuan to be a reserve currency like the dollar, it would allow yuans to be available in large quantities in foreign countries. But that would allow countries outside China to buy chinese products, companies and political leverage in China at any time. There is no inflation in China, so the Yuan held by outsiders keeps its purchasing power. So being a reserve currency is not what China may want.
So overcapacity is not a thing in currencies.

Remember that China has more population (1.4 billion) than the US (330 million) and all of Europe (742 million) combined.
The 'Global North' population (developed countries such as US, EU, JPN, SK, etc all combined) is about 1.6 billion, similar to china's 1.4 billion. How do you expect China not to be competitive when they are the most aggressive learners and hardworking culture in the world.
The Global North is only 25% of the world population but controls almost 80% of the world's wealth. The US tries to keep it this way and keep the Global South poor. They dont want the Global South(which includes China) to have control of High Value added industries because it will shift the global wealth and the US will lose their superiority.
I think in a capitalistic society and merit based system, its fair that China with their 1.4 billion extremely hardworking population and culture, its inevitable that they will be able to produce more value against the Global North.
Especially when China is a united country whereas the Global North is comprised of all different countries, each competing with each other to some extent.
Me being an Indonesian support that China who wants win-win cooperation and help drive the economy of us in the Global South, rather than the West who has historically seen us as only as a consumer for their overpriced goods, keeping us dependant, whilst allowing us to only be involved in low value added industry and keeping us at the bottom of the global value chain.
An example of this is how the West has tried to force Indonesia to sell our raw nickel (low value added industry), whereas China has proposed to invest in us and building the nickel processing factories(high value added industry) in Indonesia which will create jobs and also create high value added nickel products.
The world is not a zero sum game and the West should realize this, if we work together as humans, we will all be the winners. For example, if every country in the world worked together to create a big network of solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy solution, there would be free energy for everyone and we would not have wars on this anymore. People can even have universal basic income and they are free to live like house cats, not needing to worry about food and shelter, and just enjoy life.
If they are bored, people can explore hobbies, explore space, explore art, explore entertainment, etc.

      Answering:
That is exactly what I was thinking. I explain in other comments. Europe has had lazy neoliberal thinking for say about 40 years. Before that after the war Europe and Japan had a more directed economy. In Europe in the 70s they started to « liberate » capital, which went to China and other developing countries with the effect of weakening labor in the West and having private companies not invest in innovation athome but building factories in China and the developing wold. Finance became important redistributing money to the rich and freezing and reducing salaries in the West dismantling the welfare state.

If China has been able to catch up and eventually surpass the US and EU , in several domaines this means that its model of production and the philosophy behind it is good and effective. So instead of smearing China for its success and taking sanctions to slow China progress it is advisable that the western powers review and readjust their model of production to avoid being outcompeted by China in other areas all the more considering their huge financial power. In my view cooperating with China in technology and R& D will be beneficial for the advancement of human kind. However the big question is whether the west is humble enough to accept that.

The “China overcapacity” accusation may look like an economic discussion, but the truth is, the accusation is built on false logic and ignores more than 200 years of the basic concept of comparative advantage in Western economics. All countries produce and export products of their comparative advantage and this is the nature of international trade. If a country should be accused of overcapacity and asked to cut capacity whenever it produces more than its domestic demand, then what would countries trade with? If exporting 12 percent of Chinese-made EVs is called overcapacity, then what about Germany, Japan and the US who export 80, 50 and 25 percent respectively of their automobiles? Wouldn’t that be considered more serious overcapacity? Let’s not forget that according to the statistics of the International Energy Agency, to realize carbon neutrality, the world will need 45 million NEVs by 2030, 4.5 times that of the demand of 2022. When the global capacity is still far below the market demand, how could there be “overcapacity”?
The US knows full well that this “overcapacity” allegation is against economic common sense and industry facts, yet still labels China with it. The US claim of “China overcapacity” is not a market-driven conclusion, but a crafted narrative to manipulate perception and politicize trade. The real purpose is to hold back China’s high-quality development and deprive China of its legitimate right to development.

The main issue is likely that much of the richer world has become complacent and they expect to remain rich easily.
But a lot of it has depended on easy access to resources or cheap labor in the rest of the world. And as the rest of the world advances, it becomes less easy to maintain the advantage that their ancestors worked hard to create.

Overproduction from China is true but their quality tied along with the price. If you can afford, will you buy a china made car or european car? If you are rich, do you buy a private jet from the west or from china? When your country buys defends weapon, do they buy from china or from US or the west? Overproduction from china cos they go for mass volume at low profit but the west goes the other way around. I still believe quality products from the west are million times better than china. Finally, all the raw ingredients come from china will end 1 day. Their earth will be digged empty.

Nobody's blaming the mirror. China is the world’s largest producer of automobiles, electronics, ships, rare earth minerals, solar panels, wind turbines, electrical transformers, fiber optic cables, aluminum, coal, steel, high-speed train infrastructure, hydroelectric infrastructure, seaport infrastructure, airport infrastructure, nuclear power plants, coal power plants, concrete, cotton, glass, paper, plumbing, wiring, pharmaceutical ingredients, shoes, etc. China also maintains the world’s largest trade surplus and forex reserves. A reasonable observer would look at these metrics and conclude that China is a developed country. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), however, fights to maintain the country's official “developing country” status. This status allows them to engage in protectionism without repercussions. Things would be a lot different if import restrictions were eliminated, intellectual property rights were protected, and the Renminbi were to be properly valued by market forces. If China wants to export their way out of the financial mess that the CCP got them into, they are going to have to play by the same rules as everyone else or face reciprocal barriers to foreign markets.

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck...Maybe the CCP and its communist sycophants aren't aware of the OP's "Chinese proverb." In any case, they can either play by the rules and reap the rewards of free trade or they can maintain their overcapacity and force their fellow DEVELOPED country trading partners to respond accordingly

One can always put tariffs on their export. But when those is over 25% it gets ridiculous!
Too much tariffs and one has a protected shop which never will be able to compete. Butter to find something you can compete in, and let people enjoy the lower prices without inflation.
But when you put sanctions on them, you aren't only breaking the trade rules. You are starting a war!
