It was always the rule of thumb for me in Thailand - Sealed drinks only, Registered Hotel drinks only (not motel not hostel). Young kids just trying to have fun, and it ended up in disaster due to lack of judgement. The education to people going overseas needs to be stricter in places where alcohol regulations aren’t as strong as they are here in Australia.

Methanol is the result of home brews and the fermentation process as a result: what I am saying is people home brew to save money, but have no control over the methanol content from fermentation. Very silly and sad situation
Rule No.1 when traveling overseas is to be sensible about alcohol consumption, avoidance is advised as you typically won't be covered by travel insurance if anything happens to you and you were under the influence of alcohol Second, utilise Smartraveller and similar sources to familiarise yourself with the dangers in the foreign country you are traveling to. Apply common sense and take precautions .
I worked at the hostel behind the bar 5 years ago. The spirits behind the bar tasted like pure gasoline, I always told everyone not to drink any spirits from there. The owner was an incredibly money hungry and rude man. So incredibly sad to see this happen 😢
Perhaps a little research might educate the ignoramus commenters. Thailand has made remarkable progress in reducing poverty from 58 percent in 1990 to 6.8 percent in 2020 driven by high growth rates and structural transformation. This is unrelated to binge drinking, it is **methanol poisoning**. If it was merely an isolated incident of one person drinking too much then it wouldn't be a news story, this is a series of illnesses and deaths localised to a very small area with a specific cause.

Women are targeted all the time for free nights on the town. Clubs have been doing this for a very long time, it’s not that different to the prostitution model used in illegal operations. In Las Vegas I watched groups of women being encouraged through the head of the line, to which men would bribe bouncers the women’s protection from who is about to harass them to get in the door, so cashed up men with means get predatory access to women made felt special by the method of capture.
