I also was VERY into video games throughout that time. Both in arcades and at home, having as many as 5 home consoles at my peak. NBA Jam was a game that I really enjoyed. I absolutely LOVED NBA Hangtime, it was the birth of my nickname where I created my first created character with a basketball head. I used to play TE SO much on my SEGA before then. Such an amazing franchise!
Great video! I was a 90’s kid and the hype of NBA Jam was unbelievable. Just having the ability to play and control your NBA heroes in that real TV format with the advanced graphics for its time was something that was unthinkable until that point. I think that today’s kids are looking for something that represents a more realistic game play.
Yep! People talk about the hype around street fighter 2 and mortal Kombat, and yeah there was a lot of hype around those, but EVERYONE played NBA Jam. Kids, teens, adults, sports fans who didn't normally play games, everyone. It was truly a different beast.
I don't know how you have the talent to produce so many facets of those videos. I'm always in admiration of this kind of creativity. I remember trading NBA Jam for Mario Kart for a week with my best friend as a kid and one day his mom came over and ask for the NBA Jam back and I just said "no" hahaha we laugh about it to this day. What an epic game. My go to were the Supersonics. Awesome video seeing the backstory of this amazing franchise! Keep up the amazing work!

Welcome back wrestling with gaming the history of NBA Jam from Midway I remember playing this so much in the bonus characters you can play as is just great times with my brothers. Hopefully we get to see each other again in a live stream
@WrestlingWithGaming okay look forward to that and really good work on NBA Jam I remember playing this in the arcade at Galpin ghost and renting it playing it with my brothers
Played this before i had to go to school as a kid. Remember calling each other to share codes we read about or figured out on our own. This was awesome to watch!
There are so many Gaming History channels now a days, but I have to tell you that you really stand out to me and I really enjoy your content. The production is great and you can really see the amount of work that goes into the script and the research, etc. Your passion comes through in each and every video. I really appreciate your authentic personality and how youre not playing a character or that you dont ham it up for the camera like so many others do. I have been a fan of yours for years and look forward to each new video. Keep up the great work man!
Awesome job. Your videos are always top notch. Jam is one of my favorite arcade games. I’m still hoping for the NFL Blitz video to be coming eventually.
Thanks for hitting ALL the corners. I am always disappointed in other videos but it feels like you covered every inspiration and legacy game after the classics exactly as I remember them. I'm surprised that it really WASN'T a follow-up to Arch Rivals but keenly remember feeling at the time that it was the next evolution of High Impact football. :) You earned a sub.
Thanks a lot. I almost included a section on NBA jam knock-offs like Barkley: Shut Up and Jam, but I felt like it was just diluting the video. I might do a smaller separate video on the knock-offs at some point though.
This game is a pop culture icon, especially when they released it for Sega and Nintendo. My brother’s neighbor has one of those arcade games in his basement. Haven’t been a video gamer since 1995 or 96. But this is definitely an arcade game I’d love to have. And 30-31 years later my brother still has our Genesis cartridge of NBA Jam.
Awesome video, you've put such a huuuuuuge booomschakalaka amount of work in it, and we can see it! Thank you for this high quality, and the nice shirt ;-)
Growing up in Chicago and seeing Midway put out machines before anywhere else was something else. I'll never forget at around age 8 at Just Games on Harlem Avenue a 20-something year old came in and plopped a quarter on the MK II screen I was at. He would eventually perform a Fatality on me, revert it to a Babality, back into fighter form.. and then into another Babality before exploding the baby into a Fatality. As the only witness to that, none of my friends at the time believed me.
That was probably my friend Eddie Ferrier. He was one of the game testers for the MK series. We used to always go to Dennis Place for Games on Cumberland and Lawrence. That was the first permanent test site for MK 1. We also played a lot of Street Fighter there too along with the test pinballs. Pinball is my main jam still till this day. I’ve been competing now in tournaments for 30 plus years, started at age 17. I became friends with all the Bally/Williams/Midway guys playing in the first Chicago PAPA pinball league at Diversions arcade.
Another masterpiece! Thanks so much for these wonderful videos! I had heard they made a special cabinet for Jordan with him in it but never saw actual footage until now!
you are BACK !!!!!!!!!!!! every time you post a video it feels like its my birthday ! . Your videos are absolutely FIRST CLASS ! . Wishing you a million more subs !!
I grew up with arcades in the 80s. In the 90s there was an NBA Jam arcade game at the student union in college. I got addicted to that game. Love love loved it.
Worse, ONE guy got a million 😬. But to be fair, it grossed a billion dollars in quarters for arcade operators, not directly to midway. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the royalty amounts for the rest of the people that worked on it outside of the bonus for finishing the game early.
as a kid in 93,just after the wall in east germany fell, this game was heaven back than. played the SNES version and i love it to this day. a classic for sure.
Uh, sir, I need my video game retrospectives to be given to me by a nerd. You look like you can get laid, and clearly know your way around a weight room. Therefore, I shall take any info provided in this video with a grain of salt.
💀 😂 I assure you, my collection of CD-i consoles and games basically counteracts any perceived lack of nerdiness or ability to get laid you may have perceived. I mean, did you see the Star Trek stuff on my shelves in the lower right hand corner? 😬 This comment legit cracked me up. I'm going to leave it pinned for a bit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Live long and prosper 🖖🏻
This was a great video, bro. Good job!! Arcade is such a staple of our childhood and these videos do well to transport us back while educating us on unknown data points that only thorough research would uncover. You, sir, are justifying the internet’s good qualities;)
Another banger of a video! 10/10 production values as always. We still have NBA Jam on both Genesis/Mega Drive and SNES, an absolute classic whether you cared about the sport or not.
One of my friends growing up was an only-child rich kid whose house everyone hung out at and of course had a PS1 from day 1 & NBA Jam. He prided himself on major life accomplishments such as being able to drink 2 liters of water in one shot & running head first into a support column so his glasses would fly across the room. But he was especially proud of his athletic prowess in NBA Jam. This was also the time when And1 clothing was out & pretty big, so he'd shout "AND WHAT!?!" when he scored.... because as illustrated above, he was a little off. He even looked & sounded like the cab driver from the MTV commercials.
When this game came out, I had a Sega Genesis and there was a gaming competition that Blockbuster held. I was the kid who won in my Long Beach neighborhood BB. I went on to play against the other winning kids from different parts of the state at Knot's Berry Farms. I lost in the 2nd round. It was because I played the computer most of the time instead of real people. NBA Jam was so much fun, because even if you played a lot of basketball, which I did, it was like living your wildest fantasies you couldn't do on the real court. Thanks for the info.
This game was f-ing amazing! When it finally released on SNES, the real battles began. It had the best cheat code: high archer everything. Absolute perfection.
Thanks so much! I had a great time revisiting the game and its history myself while making it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I appreciate it.
High Digitized (Not sure how to spell it) graphics are burned into my mind when I used to walk into Tilt. The loud noises, flashes, real people in games were something new that I never saw before due to the NES days. Take me back!!! lol
Loved the arcade version of NBA Jams. I remember the first time I ever played it at AstroWorld in the mid-late ‘90’s. However, my all time favorite basketball game of that era was NBA Give and Go for the SNES! It was 5v5 and a bit more realistic with different camera angles and alley hoops, ball fakes, trick passes, and a variety of intense dunks! Nick Van Exel was unstoppable from behind the arc and Stockton and Malone were invincible with the play that gave the game its name! Although there was no Jordan, it still hit hard af when a group of around 6 or 8 of us from school would get together with some sticky green sustenance and run tournaments with 3 minute quarters… Ah, tha memories!!!
Thanks a lot! But there's no team, I (Yahel) do everything. The writing, research, 3d stuff, editing, hosting, and catering. But dude, it coming off like there's a team is a huge compliment. Sincerely thank you.
Yooo Dennis place for games... Northside Chicago! Wow such a random shout but awesome to see 👌 I went as a kid to a birthday party there where we could just push a button and play all the games without coins and it was literally heaven for me 🤩
Still a masterpiece! This, mortal kombat and street fighter II were the reason I had to build myself a game cabinet in my adulthood! Still love playing these titles today!
NBA jam, hangtime and blitz have a special place in my basement. I think I just enjoy looking at the cabinets and having flashbacks from 30 years ago more than playing them today.
I've always loved NBA JAM, to this day it's a go to arcade machine for me to play if I see it. The gameplay is almost like a fighting game, it's that satisfying.
The 90's was the best era for arcade and home gaming. We had the battle of the two big console giants Sega and Nintendo along with the music at the time. Boy what a time to be alive, sorely missed.
I really enjoyed this and super pumped you had Tim Kitzrow in this video. I definitely have fond memories of playing NBA Jam TE on SNES, NBA Hangtime on SNES and NBA on NBC on N64. I miss these games. On Fire Edition was actually not bad
My mother used to run an arcade in Box Hill Australia called Timezone. And the advantage of not having to pay for these games and everyone else did just made me unbeatable. I also knew every machine and its cheats like how to unlock the pace car on the Indycar machine and how to get to secret menus ect. I remember when NBA Jam came out in consoles i just wasnt as good as i was on a machine. So finally my mates caught up
I just realized that all 3 players on Inside the NBA are in this game... I played it so many times, but for got about Kenny "The Jet" Smith being in the game!
Despite not actually ever playing it, I've seen quite a few documentaries about NBA Jam here on YT. They all mostly cover the same stuff, I was worried this was gonna be another rehash of basically the same things, but yours actually stood on its own and went over a lot of things that weren't covered in those. Really awesome. Wasn't much of a football guy, but I used to play a ton of NFL Blitz though ("I brought the hurt on you boy!" lives in my head rent-free). Cool to see that it shares a common thread with Jam. Maybe I oughta play it some time. Great work my dude. Love that you're back in action.
Just saw a good buddy of mine from school days way back when, we hadn't seen eachother in over 20 years- and the one game we jumped on within an hour or so was none other than NBA Jam! 🤘 Truly a timeless classic! ❤
First time I played the franchise was NBA Jam TE on PS1, around 1998 and loved it. Was so fun. I dont think I ever saw the Acclaim arcade release of JAM until watching this video, but graphically I like the Midway ones more.
Nobody, and I mean nobody, does video game documentaries better than Wrestling With Gaming. I know these videos must take you forever to make, but thank you so much for making them. I absolutely love this game and I'm pretty sure I wore out my copy of NBA Hang-Time on N64. Excellent video 11/10! ❤
You're too kind, thank you! These do take a long time to make but I've got a few ideas to change up my workflow to get them out a little sooner. I'd love to get up to two a month next year.
I grew up with Will. This was major for us and there was a code you could enter to get him as a player on the arcade game and kill folks. He passed away 2 years ago...rip Wil.Great video.
NBA Jam was *THE* game that made me fell in love with Sports Video Games. I bought both the Super NES and SEGA Genesis ports and even the later Tournament Edition for the PS-X. 👍
1993: New Orleans, LA: I'll never forget when I first went into the corner store and saw NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat , and GLITCH Street Fighter: Championship Edition (You can throw fireballs in the air). NBA Jam was AMAAAAAZING.
Last month I found a complete copy of NBA Jam 's version on Mega Drive (that was the Genesis for we europeans, sorry american people) for just 3€. I grabbed it INSTANTLY! It's always a pleasure seeing you back in action, mate!!
Welcome back I am so glad you are okay from Milton! I got lucky and fortunate here in Palm Harbor. It was a lot of stress for all us in Tampa Bay NBA Jam is one of my all time favorites!
Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it! I'm just trying to make videos I'd find interesting myself and I've really been enjoying learning 3D modeling and animation the last few years. Thanks again, comments like these make the time and effort worth it!
@ it’s my pleasure. It’s people like you who are the lifeblood of what makes RUclips so special. You should consider adding a donate button on here! Or do you have a Patreon? Keep up the amazing work!
@nicolaselhani I have a Patreon but I don't think I enabled the option to donate on specific videos. I'll look into that. And thanks again!
I love this channel. It always hits so hard and the effort involved is obvious with the 3D production values. Seeing GameSack and MVG commenting speaks volumes.
Thanks a lot! It's always nice to get some love from creators as good those two.
So well done in peeling back the layers of our nostalgic onions with photos, footage, facts, and insights!
Another banger! Your editing and presentation keeps getting better and better. Great stuff!
I'm trying! Thanks so much!
I loved this game on Sega. “HE’S ON FIRE” 😂 such great memories. Another amazing video man
Thanks! The game still holds up today too imo
A small arcade went out of business and my dad bought MIDWAY NBA Jam for $60. Me and my brother put about 5000 hours into that machine.
$60 at the time wasn't cheap, mate...
@ The original NBA Jam arcade cabinet, released by Midway in 1993, was priced between $3,000 and $4,000.
I have never played it, but i will certainly download it and have a play. It looks quite good. I have only been playing video games since about 2017, despite being 54, so i have some catching up to do.
Late 80s to early 2000s were the golden age of gaming. You don't see nearly as much risk or creativity these days.
Just like musicians. They recycle beats and rhythms.
Golden age of life 😂
So happy to see you back! Your gaming videos are a hidden gem on RUclips. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Just in case RUclips didn't put them on your feed, I've got 3 other videos I've recently put out in the last few months. Should have another one out in November
Welcome back wrestling with gaming the history of NBA Jam from Midway I remember playing this so much in the bonus characters you can play as is just great times with my brothers. Hopefully we get to see each other again in a live stream
Absolutely. In fact, I'll probably stream this weekend.
Taking my brother and nephew to Chicago next weekend to see the Midway arcade history museum exhibit. Should be amazing!
Ah, that's great! I know a guy that worked on it and it's amazing.
@@WrestlingWithGaming just left and got in to Galloping Ghost. Really nice exhibit.
That’s really kind of you to say. I truly appreciate the support! Thanks!
Awesome job. Your videos are always top notch.
Jam is one of my favorite arcade games. I’m still hoping for the NFL Blitz video to be coming eventually.
I do love Blitz so I might cover it some day. Probably won't be for a while if I do
Thank you for your amazing work. This is so epic for my generation ❤
i probably put a few thousand hours into NBA Jam T.E. on SNES back in the day. loved that game and wish I still had it.
Same, but Sega Genesis
Thanks for hitting ALL the corners. I am always disappointed in other videos but it feels like you covered every inspiration and legacy game after the classics exactly as I remember them. I'm surprised that it really WASN'T a follow-up to Arch Rivals but keenly remember feeling at the time that it was the next evolution of High Impact football. :) You earned a sub.
Thanks a lot. I almost included a section on NBA jam knock-offs like Barkley: Shut Up and Jam, but I felt like it was just diluting the video. I might do a smaller separate video on the knock-offs at some point though.
This is one of three sports games I actually enjoyed lol
Awesome video man :D
Me too! I'd say this and Blitz are the two that I liked the most. Probably cause they're so ridiculous yet fun and I don't really watch actual sports.
I know your videos not getting so many views these days but appreciate your content. keeps getting better
Appreciate you watching and the kind words!
Awesome video, you've put such a huuuuuuge booomschakalaka amount of work in it, and we can see it! Thank you for this high quality, and the nice shirt ;-)
Thank you so much, j appreciate it. Hard to go wrong with blackcraft cult!
Your are easily one of the most interesting personalities on RUclips. Great presentation, great research and amazing 3d animations!
Thanks so much!
first sports game I LIKED. The arcade feel even brought in non NBA fans.
100% Jam and Blitz were games anyone could get into.
NBA jam was so fun!they really need to make another one for the newer gen.
Another masterpiece! Thanks so much for these wonderful videos! I had heard they made a special cabinet for Jordan with him in it but never saw actual footage until now!
This guy's... ON FIRE! Is it the shoes yahel?
Actually, it's the CD-i collection 🥴
I remember playing this in high school (96-97) and couldn’t get enough of it!
you are BACK !!!!!!!!!!!! every time you post a video it feels like its my birthday ! . Your videos are absolutely FIRST CLASS ! . Wishing you a million more subs !!
Thanks! I would've had this one out a couple of weeks ago but Hurricane Milton threw a snag in those plans.
@@WrestlingWithGaming I hope you are alright and nothing major happened
Amazing work, sir. This is my first video of yours, and I was taken aback at your attention to detail, especially the graphics. Great job!
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.
Still the best NBA game. Never to be bested imo.
I had a TON of fun playing Street. But yes, this and TE are untouchable.
I was coming to write this exact thing.... 😆 had the most fun and still to this day. Have the most fun of all basketball games with NBA JAM
I grew up with arcades in the 80s. In the 90s there was an NBA Jam arcade game at the student union in college. I got addicted to that game. Love love loved it.
The game rakes in one billion and people responsible for the work get just one million. The industry hasn't changed.
Worse, ONE guy got a million 😬. But to be fair, it grossed a billion dollars in quarters for arcade operators, not directly to midway. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the royalty amounts for the rest of the people that worked on it outside of the bonus for finishing the game early.
Would you cry about becoming a millionaire?
as a kid in 93,just after the wall in east germany fell, this game was heaven back than. played the SNES version and i love it to this day. a classic for sure.
This comment legit cracked me up. I'm going to leave it pinned for a bit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Live long and prosper 🖖🏻
That reply earned a subscription. 😂
😂😂😂😂
Don’t judge a nerd by his cover
😂😂😂😂😂🤓🤓🤓🤓💯💯💯
NBA Street and the sequels were some of my favorite games ever which I feel are a direct result of NBA Jam being made so thank you NBA Jam!
This was a great video, bro. Good job!! Arcade is such a staple of our childhood and these videos do well to transport us back while educating us on unknown data points that only thorough research would uncover. You, sir, are justifying the internet’s good qualities;)
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Some of these NBA jam games I really didn't know about. Ty for the trip down memory lane
One of my favorite games growing up! Loved this game. NBA Street and NFL street were also fun.
Dude, you are killing it.. This is the best retro gaming retrospective channel on RUclips right now. Amazing graphics!
Thanks! Comments like this make the effort worth it.
@@WrestlingWithGaming You need to make more content. Your attention to research and detail is top notch. Looking forward to new videos.
Another banger of a video! 10/10 production values as always.
We still have NBA Jam on both Genesis/Mega Drive and SNES, an absolute classic whether you cared about the sport or not.
Thanks. And yeah,, it's one of those games anyone can play and "get" right away and have fun with
One of my friends growing up was an only-child rich kid whose house everyone hung out at and of course had a PS1 from day 1 & NBA Jam.
I wasn't even a basketball fan, and I loved going to the arcade, getting blazed, and then playing this. Bonus is there was an MK cabinet next to it.
I remember having to wait in line at the arcade to get a chance to play NBA Jam, and also MK2. 80’s and early 90’s were some great times.
Omg! This is making me smile so much. So many precious memories. I feel like a kid again right now.
It was a great time to grow up if you loved arcade games. The golden age.
That was a fun video to watch. It really took me back to my youth, and your detail paid great homage to a legendary game.
Although there was no Jordan, it still hit hard af when a group of around 6 or 8 of us from school would get together with some sticky green sustenance and run tournaments with 3 minute quarters…
Ah, tha memories!!!
Visually! this is one of the most impressive things ive ever seen! Kudos to the animator but also the entire team! AMAZING CONTENT!
Amazing work as always. Im always in love with your creative transitions.
Thanks Ian. All inspired by Trip Hawkins, of course.
@WrestlingWithGaming as is tradition
Definitely my most favorite video game of all time. I was the perfect age when it was big and I'm still obsessed with it.
The 90's was the best era for arcade and home gaming. We had the battle of the two big console giants Sega and Nintendo along with the music at the time. Boy what a time to be alive, sorely missed.
this game ate all my coins day in , day out...and loved it! pistons and isiah thomas ! great video man!
So finally my mates caught up
Login as ‘WIL’, the Air Morris hidden character was absolute fire!! IYKYK
I just realized that all 3 players on Inside the NBA are in this game... I played it so many times, but for got about Kenny "The Jet" Smith being in the game!
These were all in the arcades when I was 14/15…good times!
He’s on fire! 🔥
Thanks! I probably should've flat out mentioned that NFL blitz was another Mark turmell game
Just saw a good buddy of mine from school days way back when, we hadn't seen eachother in over 20 years- and the one game we jumped on within an hour or so was none other than NBA Jam! 🤘 Truly a timeless classic! ❤
Yeah, it really still holds up well. Tons of fun playing against other people to this day.
NBA Jam was my favorite basketball game in the 90s. Last NBA player to retire that was on the NBA Jam roster was Jason Kidd.
What a great documentary, the memories were flowin! 🏀
Thanks for watching, glad to hear it brought back some good memories!
That last second shot always missing from the Bulls on the Pistons is the funniest thing ever LOL
Last month I found a complete copy of NBA Jam 's version on Mega Drive (that was the Genesis for we europeans, sorry american people) for just 3€.
I grabbed it INSTANTLY! It's always a pleasure seeing you back in action, mate!!
Played that version a lot at my friend's house. Got a lot of good memories with it myself!
Welcome back I am so glad you are okay from Milton! I got lucky and fortunate here in Palm Harbor. It was a lot of stress for all us in Tampa Bay
NBA Jam is one of my all time favorites! I remember it being one of my first true arcade experiences with my older brother at Aladdin's Castle in Countryside mall and Celebration Station!
Thanks! Glad to hear you were ok. Thankfully I didn't have any major damage but a ton of debris cleanup. Hopefully we're done with hurricanes for the year.
