Imagine having your fountain pen custom made by an old pen maker in Japan, that's some serious swag. A lot of high quality pens are "hand made" to a degree but this man actually made the pen from raw materials. That's metal
I liked the way his rotary machine and all his tools looked well oiled, cleaned, and sharpened. I have a lot of respect for someone who takes good care of his tools.
Yesterday I watched a video of how a company makes their fountain pens, fairly high tech and a lot of machinery. Mostly automated - it was impressive. Tonight I was recommended this video and it's art. Amazing and captivating work.
No crap background music, no chit chat, just the noise of craftsmen at work, the sound of the lathe and the squeak of the thread. Lovely and mesmerising.
As a fountain pen aficionado, I have to say it was joy to watch a master at his best create a pen which will last until its passed down to ones grandson.
As a craftsman that just had to let go a job precision honing 40-foot cylinders, this really hit me in the feels. Some of us even hold our heartbeat, when we need that next level of focus. ;)

Beautiful pen. I want it. I still write by hand in cursive. I still use the pen my 7th grade english teacher required we learn with. I'll be 60 soon. I have 12 fountain pens, and I'm sorry to say, none of any real quality. I still love how they write.
have had a bit to do with pens , worked in a pen shop(in the 80s) that sold pens from $1 to $6000 some of the pens i preferred were steel nib but there were a few gold nibs that were so smooth. I still buy pens but i might test out ten or more nibs before i buy a pen . a cheap pen with a great nib beats an expensive pen with a average nib .
@Peter Brooke So going by your comment it's all in the nib? I have to ask how can a pen cost $6000??? Were they made of gold and encrusted with precious gems?
@@rabbitphobia There are pens gilded with powdered gold and a painted scene done by hand with many layers, fitted not just to work, but to be smooth and pleasing even when unscrewing the barrel to change the ink. And yes, nib made with 14K gold, polished to perfection, and iridium point ground just so by master nibmeisters. Those are more art than they are pen, and if they are used as pens it's probably going to be on billion dollar contracts or international treaties. You can still get excellent quality pens for 100 or less that will last a lifetime, and utilitarian ones for 20-30 that will give decades of service though they may not look or feel quite as nice. Even a 'cheap' 2 or 3 dollar one, with a bit of work on the nib, will feel and look on the page miles ahead of the best ballpoints.

I have to comment volumes on this video. The document has the magic of craftsmanship and the age of wisdom in it. This is the future and the past at the same time. It's about skill, love, commitment and joy. He gained precision and exactness as a form of peace. This is about contemplation. How can this be more religious and spiritual when his aura is all around his workplace, the way he operates his machines and how happy he feels doing it. THIS, only this, is the grail that RUclips achieved. It's a great step for man kind in every sense. We found ourselves again through our guilds, talents and technology. It's Japan in the purest form. @Usty It not the younger generation. It is the socialist system of education. It managed to sever the tie between wise and young and waste years with useless paperwork.
