Hold preserves center of gravity so you don't topple forward or backward while Slow Pulls gives you an advantage since you're moving backwards but risks toppling backwards since the center of gravity moves as the body moves(Humans walk on two legs without tails) making them unstable. Furthermore, tug of war is a game of strength and stamina; Slow pulls makes you exert energy more than Hold.

Everyone is glazing over this but the team holding is anchoring their weight down to make their line heavier with each pull the other team does. They’re not only synchronized as a team but they’re synchronized with the other team. If you look at the team that is slowly moving back look at their lead, he doesn’t move an inch because they can’t. Eventually a couple of them fatigue and lose balance signaling for the team holding to pull while their link is weak

Height order (preferably, but not absolute), good strength at the front, heaviest at the back to Anchor, preferably with the rope in a double-lock knot around their chest and/or waist to prevent drift. Combination of hold and coordinated slow pulls, switching back to holding if needed, only doing a full walking pull once the lead puller calls it. Keep the line straight, and always be an arm-length from the puller in front, you should all be able to just put your hand on the puller in fronts shoulder. Too much gap allows for sway which ruins the balance, too close and you lose your leverage and power.

i wonder if quick release then grab and pull could break the hold strategy. quick release should make the hold team lose their balance for a bit giving you the chance to pull back while they pick up their bearings. sounds plausible on paper but i wonder if it will be effective during an actual match.

The best way to win is to inflict as much friction toward the center as possible. If the other side is pulling, the team must not lift their feet off the ground and try to dig into the floor. If one person lifts their foot too early, it could cost that side the victory. Once you start pulling, if you are allowed to, you can (it’s not necessary) turn around and push. If you’re pushing, exploit your arm muscles and pull the rope as far toward your side as possible. Holding the rope out all the way the whole time is not the best idea if you really want to win.

The best strategy is slow and heavy pulls, with breaks in between pulls. Participants should be split evenly, holding the rope from the left and right. You pull, stabilise, and pull again. It wears down your opponents the fastest without wearing out your team
